The usual routes are to deposit outside cash, have the broker apply eligible cash already in the account against the debit, or sell selected positions and direct the proceeds to the loan. Which route works, how quickly it posts, and whether it satisfies a margin call depend on your brokerage agreement and account status.
First determine the exact debit, accrued interest and any active call. Then ask the broker how deposits, sale proceeds and cash balances are credited. If a margin call is open, contact the firm immediately: it may sell securities without waiting for your permission, choose which positions to sell and change its maintenance requirements.

What a margin balance is
A margin debit is money borrowed from a brokerage firm to buy or hold securities. The securities and other assets in the margin account secure that borrowing, and interest accrues under the terms of your margin agreement. The balance is not the same as the market value of your holdings: a falling portfolio can reduce your equity while the borrowed principal and accrued interest remain.

A cash payment reduces the amount financed once the firm credits it. Selling a portion of the account can also reduce the loan while leaving other investments in place. Neither action, however, guarantees that an active margin call is satisfied until the broker confirms the account is current.

The agreement controls repayment responsibility, collateral, interest calculations, liquidation rights and account procedures. Broker practices differ, so a general maintenance-margin percentage, a date shown in an electronic notice or a payment initiated from your bank is not proof that the account is safe or the debit has been reduced.
Step 1: Establish the exact balance and whether a call is active
Before choosing a payment method, review the account’s current debit balance and the information the broker uses to determine whether you are meeting its requirements. Record the figures and the time they were displayed because market movements and interest can change them.
Check these account fields
- Margin debit or loan principal.
- Accrued interest and the date through which it was calculated.
- Available cash, including whether it is shown in a separate cash balance or swept elsewhere.
- Maintenance excess, buying power or equivalent equity figures used by the firm.
- Any margin call, deficiency, house requirement or deadline shown in the account.
- Pending deposits, withdrawals, trades and transfers that could change the figures.
Ask for a written payoff or call figure
Call or message the brokerage and ask for the amount required to bring the account current as of a stated date. Ask whether the figure includes accrued interest, whether interest continues during processing, and whether the amount changes if the market moves. If a call exists, ask for the precise amount required, the accepted payment method, the crediting deadline and whether a deposit is credited for margin purposes immediately, after a hold or only after settlement.

Do not calculate the required payment from a generic maintenance-margin percentage. Firms can impose higher “house” requirements, and those requirements can vary by security, concentration, volatility or account type. FINRA says firms may change house maintenance requirements, so an account that met a prior threshold may later show a deficiency.
Route 1: Deposit outside cash
An external cash deposit is the most direct way to reduce a margin debit without changing the portfolio. Once the broker credits the funds according to its procedures, the financed amount should fall by the credited amount, subject to any interest, fees or other debits that post first.
Confirm the payment method and timing
- Ask the broker which funding methods it accepts for a margin account, such as an electronic bank transfer, wire or check, and whether a particular method receives same-day credit.
- Ask whether incoming funds are subject to a hold and whether held funds count toward a margin call.
- Initiate the payment using the broker’s own instructions, including the correct account and reference information.
- Save the confirmation number and time of submission.
- After the broker’s stated processing window, verify the debit, accrued interest and maintenance figures in the account and obtain confirmation from customer service if the call remains.
A transfer that has merely been requested is not the same as cash credited to the margin account. Do not assume that a weekend, bank holiday or pending status has stopped interest or prevented liquidation.

Ask whether existing cash is netted automatically
Some broker-dealers offset cash held in a related cash balance against a margin loan; others do not. The SEC’s investor guidance explains that this policy is not universal and that the difference can affect interest expense. Ask specifically whether cash in your account is automatically netted, whether you must request the offset, what cash categories qualify and when the netting occurs.
An automatic cash sweep, a money-market position or an unsettled sale may be treated differently from immediately available cash. Only the broker can tell you which balances reduce your debit and when. If cash is not netted, moving it between subaccounts may not change the loan until the firm processes the request.
Route 2: Sell a deliberate portion of the portfolio
If available cash is insufficient, you can generally sell selected securities and apply the proceeds to the margin debit. This preserves the positions you keep, but it changes your investment exposure and can create a taxable gain or loss. Ask the broker how sale proceeds are applied and whether the proceeds count before or after trade settlement.
Choose what to sell using a written plan
List the amount of debt reduction needed, then evaluate candidate positions against the following factors:
- Call requirement: If a call is active, ask the firm how much equity or cash it requires and whether a sale of the chosen security receives any special margin treatment.
- Concentration and risk: Reducing an unusually large or volatile position may lower account risk, while selling a diversified holding may have a different effect on the portfolio.
- Investment objective: Keep positions that are central to your long-term plan only if doing so remains consistent with the lower leverage you need.
- Tax lots: Compare each lot’s cost basis, unrealized gain or loss and holding period. Your broker may allow specific-lot identification, but you must follow its instructions before the trade executes.
- Liquidity: A thinly traded security can produce a different price than expected. A market order can execute at a price that moves while the order is open.
- Debt reduction: Estimate net proceeds after commissions or other charges, then ask the broker whether that amount will reduce principal or first cover accrued interest and other debits.
Do not assume that selling a fixed dollar amount will satisfy a call. The security price can move between the sale and the broker’s crediting point, and the firm may require additional equity. Obtain the required amount from the broker before placing the order.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteExecute and verify the sale
- Confirm the security, quantity, order type and intended tax lot, if your broker supports lot selection.
- Place the order and note the execution price and time.
- Ask when the broker treats the proceeds as available to reduce the debit and whether settlement rules apply.
- Check whether the proceeds first pay accrued interest, fees or another account balance.
- After posting, verify the new debit, interest and maintenance figures with the broker.
If the broker has already declared a deficiency and begun exercising its rights, you may lose control over the selection. A customer-directed sale does not prevent the firm from liquidating other positions if the account remains below requirements.

Compare the available routes
| Route | How the debit falls | Crediting speed | Interest effect | Portfolio impact | Tax considerations | Can it satisfy a call? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Deposit outside cash | By the amount the broker credits, less any amounts applied to interest or other debits. | Depends on funding method, holds and the firm’s margin-crediting rules. | Lower principal generally means less future interest, but interest may accrue until posting. | No investment position is sold. | No sale gain or loss is created by the deposit itself. | Potentially, if credited in time and sufficient; obtain confirmation. |
| Automatic or requested cash netting | Only eligible cash that the firm offsets against the debit reduces the financed amount. | Policy and processing time vary by broker and account. | Can reduce interest when the cash is actually netted; not all firms net. | No security sale, but the cash may no longer be available for other uses. | No securities transaction from the netting itself. | Only if the broker counts the netted amount toward the call. |
| Selective sale | Net proceeds credited to the account reduce the debit or related charges. | Depends on execution, settlement and the broker’s posting process. | Lower principal after posting can reduce future interest. | Reduces or eliminates chosen positions and changes allocation. | May realize a gain or loss; result depends on lot, basis, holding period and individual facts. | Possibly, but a sale amount cannot be assumed to cure the deficiency. |
There is no universal best route. Available cash, the size and urgency of the call, the broker’s procedures, your desired exposure and your tax position determine the practical choice.
If a margin call or deficiency is active
Treat an active call as an immediate account problem, not as a routine bill. FINRA’s investor guidance says, “If you receive a margin call, act promptly to satisfy the margin call.” It also explains that a firm can sell securities without contacting you, choose which securities to sell and raise its house maintenance requirements.
What the broker may do
- Liquidate one or more positions without waiting for your approval.
- Select the securities to sell; you may not be able to choose the lots or assets.
- Sell even after communicating a date by which you hoped to meet the call.
- Require more equity than the standard regulatory maintenance level.
- Continue liquidation if the account remains deficient after a partial payment or sale.
FINRA also states that investors are not entitled to an extension on a margin call. A notice period is therefore not a promise that the firm will wait until the stated date. Contact the firm immediately, ask what amount and payment type will be accepted, and request confirmation when the call is released. Do not rely on a market rebound to solve the deficiency.
Questions to ask during the call
- What is the exact deficiency right now, including interest and fees?
- What amount must be credited, and by what time, for the call to be considered met?
- Will a bank transfer, wire, check, sale proceeds or cash netting count?
- When will each payment or sale be credited for margin purposes?
- Has liquidation begun, and if so, which restrictions apply to my orders?
- Will the firm reassess the account after the payment, and could a higher house requirement create another call?
Make sure the payment actually reduces principal
Posting conventions can make the account look different from your expectation. A deposit may first cover accrued interest or another debit. Sale proceeds may remain unsettled. Cash may sit in a related balance that the firm does not net automatically. Interest may continue until a specified processing or settlement point.
Ask the broker to explain, in your account’s terms:
- Whether interest is calculated daily, monthly or under another schedule, and the date used for the calculation.
- Whether the rate is fixed, variable or tiered and where the current rate appears in the agreement or statement.
- How deposits, sale proceeds and cash balances are applied among principal, interest and fees.
- Whether a payment must be received or merely initiated by a call deadline.
- When an updated debit and maintenance figure will be available.
Recheck the account after the stated posting time. If the debit has not changed as promised, stop making assumptions and ask customer service for a transaction-level explanation.

Transferring the account does not erase the loan
Moving securities to another brokerage is not a substitute for repayment. The SEC’s Investor Bulletin says, “Many firms will not allow you to transfer any securities out of a margin account if the account has an outstanding margin loan.” Policies differ, so ask the current firm before starting an Automated Customer Account Transfer or another transfer request.
Recommended Free Tools
The broker may require the debit to be paid, may restrict which assets can move or may require another arrangement under the margin agreement. A transfer request that is rejected or delayed does not stop interest, and it does not prevent the current firm from enforcing its margin rights. Obtain written instructions about any required payoff and the timing of asset movement.
Removing margin privileges
You can ask whether the firm will convert the account to cash-only status or remove margin privileges after the debit is resolved. Approval and procedure are account-specific. Such a change can prevent future borrowing if the broker accepts it, but it does not pay off an existing margin balance. Get confirmation that the debit is zero before treating a conversion as complete.
Tax issues before selling
Selling securities can produce a taxable capital gain or loss. The result depends on the specific lot’s basis, holding period, sale price and your overall tax circumstances. A sale made to reduce debt is still a sale for tax purposes; the purpose of the proceeds does not by itself remove the tax consequences.
Margin interest has its own rules. IRS Publication 550 (2025) states: “If you are a cash method taxpayer, you can deduct interest on margin accounts to buy taxable securities as investment interest in the year you paid it.” That statement is limited. It does not promise a deduction for every margin borrower: the use of the loan proceeds, the type of investment, the year paid and the publication’s limitations all matter.

A practical decision sequence
Use this sequence when the account is not already under forced liquidation:
- Measure the problem. Record the debit, accrued interest, available cash, maintenance excess and any call or deficiency.
- Call the broker. Request the exact amount and deadline, accepted payment methods, crediting rules and current house requirements.
- Use immediately available cash first if appropriate. Confirm whether cash is automatically netted or whether you must request an offset.
- Calculate the remaining gap. Include interest that may accrue while a payment or sale is processing.
- Review candidate positions. Consider debt reduction, concentration, investment purpose, liquidity and tax lots.
- Ask for pre-trade confirmation. Have the firm tell you whether the planned sale amount is expected to meet the call after settlement and posting.
- Execute the selected payment or sale. Keep confirmations and do not assume a pending transaction is credited.
- Verify the result. Check the updated debit, interest and maintenance figures and obtain confirmation that any call is released.
- Document the arrangement. Save the margin agreement, statements, payment records and broker messages for your financial and tax records.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming all cash offsets the loan
Separate cash balances may not be netted automatically. Ask what qualifies and when the offset occurs.
Waiting for prices to recover
A broker can liquidate during a call, and there is no guaranteed extension. Contact the firm immediately instead of relying on a rebound.
Selling a round dollar amount without checking the call
Prices, interest and house requirements can change the required amount. Get the broker’s figure and posting rules first.
Ignoring settlement and posting time
An executed sale or initiated transfer may not yet reduce the debit. Confirm when the proceeds are credited for margin purposes.
Choosing lots without considering taxes
Two lots of the same security can have very different basis and holding periods. Review lot-level information and seek tax advice when the amount is material.
Trying to transfer securities to escape the debt
Many firms restrict transfers while a margin loan is outstanding. Ask the current firm about payoff and transfer conditions before submitting paperwork.
Information to have ready when contacting the broker
- Account number and the time of your latest statement.
- Current debit, accrued interest and available cash as displayed.
- Any call, deficiency or house-requirement notice.
- Proposed deposit amount and funding method.
- Positions and estimated quantities you might sell.
- Cost basis and holding-period information for those lots.
- Your questions about netting, posting, settlement, interest and transfer restrictions.
The broker’s margin agreement and customer-service team are the authoritative sources for your account’s payoff amount, interest rate, payment method, crediting time and liquidation rights. Keep their answers with your statements, and recheck the account after every payment or sale.
Bottom line
Reduce a margin balance by adding credited cash, confirming whether existing cash is netted, or selling only the positions needed to lower the debit. Selling part of the portfolio can preserve the rest, but it may trigger taxes and may not cure a call by itself. An active call requires immediate contact with the brokerage because the firm can liquidate without waiting, choose what to sell and change its requirements. Confirm the posting and updated debit before assuming the loan is reduced or closed.
