The most reliable way to reduce OLED flicker is to use the display control made for your exact phone model. Look in Accessibility and Display settings for a control explicitly called Display Pulse Smoothing (PWM), Anti-flicker mode, DC dimming or an equivalent sensitive-eyes option. These controls are not universal: the menu path, supported models, brightness behavior and regional availability depend on the phone and its software.
Turn the relevant option on, then test the phone at the brightness level where you notice flicker. A manufacturer describes a possible viewing benefit, not a guaranteed personal result. If the change produces an unwanted low-brightness, color or performance trade-off, turn it off again. A Reading or Night mode can alter color without necessarily changing OLED pulse behavior.

Why an OLED phone can appear to flicker
Many OLED displays regulate brightness with pulse-width modulation (PWM). Instead of continuously reducing the light output of each pixel, the display rapidly alternates between brighter and darker states. At a normal viewing distance this can look steady, but some people notice the modulation, particularly at lower brightness levels or when moving their eyes across the screen.

Flicker sensitivity is personal. A display setting may make your viewing experience more comfortable, but the available manufacturer documentation does not establish that every headache, eye-strain episode or other symptom has one specific cause. Treat the settings as comfort controls, not as a diagnosis or medical treatment.
First, identify the exact phone and software
Before following an online menu path, record the phone’s manufacturer, full model name, software version and purchase region. Similar names can hide different panels and controls. A setting may be present on a Pro model but absent on the standard model, or appear only after a particular software update or in a particular country.
- Open the phone’s About phone screen and note the model designation and operating-system version.
- Check Settings search for the words flicker, PWM, pulse, DC dimming, anti-flicker, sensitive eyes and brightness.
- Use the support page for that exact model and region. Do not substitute instructions for a similarly named phone.
- Install an official system update if one is offered, then check the display menus again. Do not assume an update will add a flicker control; availability is model-specific.
Use this settings-first procedure
- Reproduce the problem. Set the phone to the brightness level and app background where you normally notice the flicker. Keep that condition consistent while testing.
- Search Accessibility. Open Settings > Accessibility and inspect display, vision or motion options. Look for an explicitly named PWM, pulse-smoothing or sensitive-eyes feature.
- Search Display. Open Settings > Display or Display & brightness. Check for Anti-flicker, DC dimming or a similarly explicit control.
- Change one setting. Enable only the documented flicker-related option, leave other display settings unchanged, and view the same content for several minutes.
- Test across brightness levels. Check the level at which the flicker was visible, plus a somewhat higher and lower level. Some phones switch dimming methods as brightness changes.
- Keep or revert based on the result. If the screen is more comfortable and the trade-off is acceptable, leave the option enabled. If not, restore the previous setting and try a different brightness level or mode.
Do not install a generic “flicker fixer” app expecting it to change panel-level PWM. An app can draw an overlay or adjust software brightness, but the documented controls below are the manufacturer mechanisms that address dimming behavior on the specified models.

iPhone: Display Pulse Smoothing (PWM)
On supported iPhone models, Apple documents the path Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Display Pulse Smoothing (PWM). Apple explains that iPhone brightness uses PWM and that dimming can make the display appear to flicker to some people. The control is intended to create a smoother dimming experience at low brightness. See Apple’s current guide: Customize onscreen motion on iPhone.
Enable the option while the phone is at the brightness level that causes trouble, then compare the same screen with it disabled. Apple specifically warns: “Disabling PWM may affect low brightness display performance under certain conditions.” That warning means you should judge the actual result on your phone rather than assuming that the smoothest-looking setting is always preferable.

Pixel 10 Pro models: sensitive-eyes brightness
Google documents Settings > Accessibility > Adjust brightness for sensitive eyes for the Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL and Pixel 10 Pro Fold. Its Pixel Help page says the option may help the viewing experience for users sensitive to OLED display emission frequency: Manage screen & display settings on a Pixel phone.

The wording matters. “May help” describes a possible benefit, not a promise that flicker will disappear or that symptoms will resolve. Turn it on, test at your usual brightness and compare it with the option off. Google presents the feature as a customization choice and does not frame it as medical advice.
Do not generalize this menu path to every Pixel phone. The documented models are the Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL and Pixel 10 Pro Fold. If you have another Pixel model, search its Accessibility and Display settings and consult the support material for that exact device.

Enable Anti-flicker mode and compare the phone at the brightness levels where you notice the issue. Because DC dimming and PWM can be used differently across brightness ranges, check more than one level rather than testing only at the slider position you normally use.

This path is specific to Xiaomi’s documented Xiaomi 14 guidance. A different Xiaomi or Redmi model may have another name, a different location or no equivalent switch. Do not treat the existence of this option as evidence that every OLED phone supports global DC dimming.
POCO X7 Pro: understand the brightness-dependent behavior
Xiaomi’s support page for the POCO X7 Pro states that the phone uses DC dimming at high brightness and PWM dimming at low brightness. It specifies 1920 Hz PWM for this model and suggests Settings > Display & brightness > Reading mode as an eye-protection adjustment: Why does the POCO X7 Pro not support global DC dimming and Anti-flicker mode?.
The important distinction is that the page does not say Reading mode disables PWM. Reading mode can alter the screen’s color appearance and may be more comfortable for some users, but it should not be described as a proven PWM off switch. Test it at the brightness where you see flicker, and turn it off if the color change is distracting or does not improve your experience.
The 1920 Hz figure belongs to Xiaomi’s POCO X7 Pro support description. It must not be copied to other POCO, Xiaomi or Android phones without model-specific evidence.

Xiaomi 14T: why one brightness setting may not work everywhere
Xiaomi describes the Xiaomi 14T as using DC dimming at high brightness and high-frequency PWM at low brightness. Its global support explanation is available at What are the dimming methods of the Xiaomi 14T’s screen?.
This is a useful example of why testing only one slider position can be misleading. If flicker is most noticeable in the lower range, moving slightly higher may change the dimming method, while moving lower may return to PWM behavior. The manufacturer description does not establish that every user will see the same effect, so use your own phone and the brightness range that matters to you.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do when your phone has no named flicker control
Some phones expose no switch labelled PWM, anti-flicker or DC dimming. In that case, use a controlled comparison rather than guessing which generic display mode will help.
Try a different brightness range
First, move the brightness gradually upward from the level where you notice flicker and compare the screen. OLED phones can change dimming behavior as brightness changes, so a small adjustment may alter the pattern. If a higher level is uncomfortable for other reasons, return to the lowest level that feels acceptable rather than forcing a particular setting.
Separate dimming controls from color controls
Reading mode, Night Light, eye-comfort mode and color-temperature filters change the appearance of white and other colors. Unless the phone maker explicitly says that a particular mode changes PWM or dimming hardware behavior, treat it as a color adjustment only. It may improve subjective comfort, but it does not prove that the underlying modulation has been removed.

Check the official model documentation
Search the manufacturer’s support site using the exact model number and your region. Look for terms such as “flickering issues,” “dimming methods,” “PWM,” “DC dimming” and “sensitive eyes.” A support article can clarify whether the phone deliberately switches between methods or whether a feature is restricted to a particular edition.
Keep the comparison repeatable
Use the same brightness, app, text size and room lighting when comparing settings. Change one variable at a time and note whether the improvement remains when you scroll, read dark text on a light background and view moving content. This will not measure PWM frequency, but it prevents a change in room lighting or content from being mistaken for a setting effect.
Camera stripes are not the same as visible flicker to a person
An OLED screen can show dark bands, ripples or stripes in a camera viewfinder or photograph. Huawei explains that PWM alternates bright and dark periods, and a camera can capture those periods out of sync with its shutter or scan timing. The resulting pattern is a camera-capture artifact, not proof that the panel is defective and not a diagnosis of what a viewer will experience.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →When photographing a screen, Huawei suggests setting the display to maximum brightness or using a screenshot to capture the content instead: Ripples or stripes appear on the viewfinder or photo when I take a photo of a screen.
A screenshot records the rendered image rather than the physical timing of the display. If the screenshot looks normal but the camera preview contains bands, that difference is consistent with capture timing. If the phone shows persistent lines to your eyes, visible damage, abnormal color patches or other hardware symptoms, document the problem and use the manufacturer’s support or warranty process rather than relying on a camera test.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Using a universal Android path: Android manufacturers rename and relocate display controls. Follow the exact model’s instructions.
- Assuming every anti-flicker label means the same thing: One phone may use DC dimming, another may smooth PWM, and another may offer only a color filter.
- Calling Reading mode a PWM fix: The POCO X7 Pro documentation recommends Reading mode as an eye-protection adjustment but does not say it disables PWM.
- Testing only at maximum brightness: Flicker behavior can change at low brightness, which is where many users notice it.
- Treating a camera pattern as a defect: Camera timing can create stripes even when the display is operating as designed.
- Assuming a higher frequency guarantees comfort: A frequency figure applies to the specified model and does not predict every person’s response.
- Expecting software to change hardware behavior: An overlay or color filter is not equivalent to a manufacturer-documented dimming control.
When a replacement phone becomes a reasonable question
Consider replacement only after you have identified the exact model, tested its documented controls and decided what trade-offs you can accept. A useful comparison requires more than a marketing phrase such as “flicker-free.” Check the exact panel’s measured dimming behavior across brightness levels, whether a user control is available, how that control affects color or low-brightness performance, which regional edition you would receive and how long the manufacturer is expected to support the software.
No particular replacement phone can be recommended from the documented information here. The evidence establishes model-specific controls and behavior, not a ranked list of alternatives. If you shop later, ask the seller or manufacturer for model-specific information and verify that the regional model number matches the one tested or documented.

Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Have you recorded the exact model, software version and region?
- Did you search both Accessibility and Display settings for an explicitly named PWM, pulse-smoothing, anti-flicker, DC-dimming or sensitive-eyes option?
- Did you test the setting at the brightness where flicker occurs, plus nearby brightness levels?
- Did you distinguish a color filter or Reading mode from a documented dimming change?
- Did you check for low-brightness performance or color trade-offs after enabling the control?
- Are you interpreting camera stripes as a capture artifact unless the phone itself shows a persistent display fault?
- If nothing helps, have you documented the behavior for the manufacturer’s support team before considering a different phone?
