What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
To reduce OLED burn-in, vary what stays on screen, use the lowest comfortable brightness, enable your display’s pixel-shift and logo-dimming protections, avoid leaving paused or static images active, and let the manufacturer’s own maintenance cycle finish when it runs. These steps lower cumulative risk; they cannot guarantee that permanent burn-in will never occur.
A faint ghost can also be temporary image retention rather than permanent panel wear. Treat the symptom differently: give the display varied content and normal use first, then follow maintenance instructions written for the exact model. Do not assume that every visible remnant needs a replacement panel or that a refresh cycle can reverse permanent wear.

Burn-in and temporary image retention are not the same
OLED pixels emit their own light. When the same bright elements are driven repeatedly, different parts of the panel age at different rates. A faint version of an earlier image can then remain visible while new content is shown. Google’s Pixel Phone Help describes the risk this way: “But when the same image stays on your screen for a long time at a high brightness, it can affect the colors or cause burn-in.”

Temporary image retention is a different, short-lived effect. RTINGS says it can appear briefly after pixels display an image in the same positions, is extremely rare on modern televisions and does not cause long-term damage. A ghost that disappears after varied content and ordinary use is therefore not proof of permanent burn-in.
| Symptom | What it usually means | First response |
|---|---|---|
| Faint outline that fades during varied video or after the display rests | Temporary image retention is possible | Use mixed content at a normal setting and observe; do not repeatedly force manual refresh cycles |
| Same mark remains in the same location across different inputs and days | Persistent image retention or burn-in is more likely | Run only the exact model’s recommended maintenance process, then contact manufacturer support if it remains |
| Uneven color or brightness without a recognizable shape | Could be panel uniformity, settings, source content or wear | Check another input and a plain test image, then use model-specific support guidance |
No visual check can establish the cause with certainty. Record the model number, purchase region, hours or usage pattern if known, and photographs of the symptom before contacting support.
What increases OLED burn-in risk
Long, repeated exposure to the same bright elements
Risk rises when a static region is both bright and present for long periods. RTINGS’ testing identifies duration, brightness and the colors of static regions as relevant factors. A small white logo at the same corner every day can matter more than a full-screen movie that changes scene by scene, even if the movie looks brighter for brief moments.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUneven workloads
OLED panels are stressed unevenly when only a strip, corner or set of icons remains fixed. News channels with persistent banners, sports score bars, desktop menus, browser chrome and games with unchanging health bars are common uneven workloads. A varied mix of films, photographs, games and changing interfaces gives more pixels time away from the same pattern.
High output and heat
Higher light output generally increases cumulative pixel stress. Lowering brightness when comfortable is a sensible risk-reduction measure, especially for static-heavy work. It is not a quantified promise of a particular extra lifespan: RTINGS notes that its longevity testing did not isolate exactly how many additional hours a lower brightness setting would provide.
Settings and habits that reduce cumulative risk
1. Keep brightness appropriate to the room
Use the lowest level that remains easy to read. For a dark room, a very high SDR setting is usually unnecessary. If you need intense brightness for occasional HDR highlights, avoid leaving that mode active on a fixed desktop, menu or channel for hours. Automatic brightness or energy-saving modes can help where they do not interfere with your work, but the exact names and behavior differ by display.
2. Vary the content and the layout
- Switch between full-screen video, changing applications and different games rather than leaving one interface open all day.
- Hide or auto-hide a persistent operating-system taskbar when practical.
- Move windows, change wallpapers and use a dark interface for static-heavy desktop sessions if it remains usable.
- Do not leave a paused game, streaming menu, channel guide or video-conferencing screen active while away.
Variation does not make a panel immune. It simply reduces the time that any one group of pixels receives the same load.

3. Set a short display-off timer
Configure the computer, streaming device or television to turn the panel off after a period of inactivity. A display-off timer is more reliable than remembering to pause a video or switch inputs. It also prevents an unattended static desktop from running through the night.
4. Turn on pixel shift
Pixel shift, sometimes called screen shift, moves the image by a small amount so fixed elements do not continually use exactly the same subpixels. Samsung’s OLED monitor guidance includes Pixel Shift; its television guidance uses the same protection under the TV’s OLED care settings. Look for a similarly named option in your model’s picture, panel-care or OLED-care menu. The shift may be subtle and can crop a few edge pixels; that is normal.
5. Enable logo dimming
Logo-dimming features detect persistent bright marks and reduce their output. Samsung calls these options Adjust Logo Brightness on some monitors and Auto Logo Brightness on televisions. A dimmed logo can look less vivid than surrounding content, which is an intentional trade-off for reducing stress on that region.
6. Maintain ventilation
Keep vents clear and do not install the display in a way that traps heat. Acer lists normal ventilation among its monitor care recommendations. Ventilation is not a guarantee against burn-in, but it avoids adding unnecessary thermal stress and prevents the display from reducing brightness or shutting down for protection.

Built-in refresh and optimization: use the correct cycle
OLED displays perform maintenance in different ways. Names such as Pixel Refresh, Panel Refresh, Screen Optimization and Compensation Cycle are not interchangeable across manufacturers or even across models.
Automatic maintenance
Many displays perform a shorter compensation or optimization process after the screen is turned off. Samsung’s US monitor guidance says its Screen Optimization function detects the OLED screen’s state, becomes automatically enabled after four or more cumulative hours of screen time and waits until the monitor is turned off. This statement applies to Samsung monitors that provide that function; it is not a rule for every OLED product.

Long manual refreshes
Some models offer a longer Pixel Refresh process. Samsung notes that monitor Pixel Refresh is unavailable on some models and can take more than an hour. Philips’ Pixel Refresh and Special Care document dated June 3, 2025 applies specifically to the 34M2C8600 monitor. These examples show why a cycle borrowed from another brand’s instructions is unsafe: timing, trigger conditions and even availability vary.
- Open the display’s settings and find the panel-care, OLED-care or maintenance section.
- Read the on-screen warning and the exact model manual before starting a manual cycle.
- Connect power as the manual requires. Some maintenance runs only after the display enters standby or is turned off.
- Start the cycle when you will not need the display for the stated duration.
- Do not unplug, turn on, press buttons or interrupt the process unless the manual explicitly permits it.
- When the display returns, use varied content and observe whether the symptom changes.
Do not run a long refresh on a schedule copied from a forum or another model. Excessive manual cycles are unnecessary, and interruption can prevent the intended maintenance from completing. If the display starts its own short optimization after shutdown, leave it connected to power long enough to finish.

What to do when a ghost image appears
Step 1: Check whether the content itself is responsible
Change to a different input and display moving, varied material. A channel logo or game HUD can appear to persist simply because the same source remains selected. If the mark fades during ordinary mixed use, temporary retention is plausible.
Step 2: Give the panel normal time
Continue ordinary use at a comfortable brightness rather than staring at a static test screen. RTINGS reports that temporary retention can clear and does not cause long-term damage. There is no universal clearing time because it depends on the panel, the displayed pattern and the preceding workload.
Step 3: Run only the exact model’s recommended maintenance
If the manufacturer directs you to use a refresh or optimization process, follow that instruction once and let it complete. A refresh can address compensation or temporary non-uniformity; it should not be advertised as a cure for permanent differential wear.
Step 4: Document and escalate a persistent mark
If the shape remains across inputs and after the documented maintenance process, photograph it against a neutral image and contact the manufacturer or authorized service channel. Include the model, serial or purchase information requested in your region, firmware version if available, usage pattern and the steps already completed. Samsung’s TV and monitor support guidance directs users to contact support when the problem continues after troubleshooting.

Prevention for OLED monitors used as computers
Computer desktops often contain the exact fixed regions that create uneven workloads. Combine the protections instead of relying on one setting.
- Enable taskbar auto-hide and set the operating system to turn the display off quickly when idle.
- Use a changing wallpaper or a dark, low-contrast desktop for long work sessions.
- Move a browser or productivity window periodically if it remains open all day.
- Use pixel shift and logo dimming where available.
- Lower brightness for text and office applications, increasing it only when the room or task requires it.
- Keep the monitor’s vents unobstructed and leave it connected to power after shutdown if the manual requires standby maintenance.
A monitor that displays spreadsheets, code or a taskbar for many fixed hours daily has a different risk profile from one used mostly for changing video. If static use is unavoidable, compare displays by their documented protections and warranty terms before purchase.
Prevention for OLED televisions
Televisions used for changing films and mixed programming generally present fewer repeated static patterns than a desktop, but channel logos, sports score bars and news tickers can still accumulate exposure. Use the TV’s OLED-care options, avoid leaving a paused menu on screen, and turn the set off rather than leaving a static source active for long absences.
Sports and news viewing deserve particular attention because their graphics stay in one position for an entire program. Varying sources and avoiding maximum brightness for every session reduce cumulative load without requiring you to avoid those programs altogether.
What long-term testing actually shows
RTINGS’ 2017 OLED real-content test
RTINGS reported visible uniformity issues on sets used for static-heavy Football/FIFA and news conditions after extended operation. Its varied-content sets did not show equivalent normal-content concerns at the reported checkpoints. The test ran for more than 9,000 operating hours and included CNN at standard and maximum brightness. RTINGS states that the workload does not represent every mixed-use household, so the hours are test hours, not a normal-use life estimate.
Comparison with 2020–2023 televisions
In a later analysis, RTINGS reported that tested 2020–2023 televisions did not consistently show less permanent image retention than a 2017 LG C7 at a 10,500-hour CNN checkpoint. The comparison used each set’s maximum SDR brightness rather than equal luminance, so it does not measure intrinsic durability at matched output. RTINGS also says its longevity test did not include 2024–2026 models.
Best Value
| Reported figure | What it describes | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| More than 9,000 hours | RTINGS’ 2017 OLED real-life test duration, with findings updated through 2020 | A guaranteed household lifespan |
| 10,500-hour CNN checkpoint | Comparison point reported for the 2020–2023 and 2017 sets under maximum-brightness conditions | Equal-luminance panel durability |
| 28% brighter sustained 10% SDR window | Average 2023 OLED versus average 2017 OLED in RTINGS’ 2026 review dataset | A 28% reduction in burn-in risk |
| 52% brighter sustained full-screen SDR | Average 2023 OLED versus average 2017 OLED in the same dataset | A 52% improvement in longevity |
Newer panels can be brighter without being proven burn-in-proof. Brightness comparisons and longevity results answer different questions, and a controlled test cannot reproduce every family’s mix of games, news, desktop work and standby behavior.
Choosing an OLED when your use is unusually static
If your primary workload contains fixed bright content for many hours, evaluate the display before buying rather than assuming software will solve the problem.

| Maintenance behavior | Does the manual explain when optimization runs, how long it takes and whether the display must remain connected to power? |
| Brightness needs | Can you work comfortably at a moderate output instead of running maximum brightness continuously? |
| Warranty language | Does the written warranty in your country address burn-in, exclusions, proof of use or a required care procedure? |
RTINGS’ testing indicates that viewers who display the same static content for long periods should consider the risk, while varied-content viewers were less likely to encounter equivalent problems in its test conditions. That is a workload distinction, not a promise about any specific model.
Warranty and repair considerations
Burn-in coverage is model-, country- and sometimes partner-specific. Do not infer coverage from a retailer listing or from another region’s policy.
- Acer’s US statement describes three-year burn-in coverage for its covered OLED monitors. Confirm that your exact model and purchase region qualify.
- Samsung support recommends contacting the company when the issue persists after its troubleshooting steps; support will determine the applicable service path.
- Philips’ cited care document applies to the 34M2C8600 and ties coverage or care expectations to following its instructions. It should not be generalized to every Philips display.
Keep the invoice, serial number, photographs and a written record of the symptom. Ask support whether the mark is classified as temporary retention, panel uniformity, image sticking or burn-in, and request the relevant warranty clause in writing. A replacement OLED panel is a model-specific repair component, not a general prevention purchase.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling every ghost image burn-in: temporary retention can clear and is extremely rare on modern TVs according to RTINGS.
- Running refresh cycles constantly: use the cycle and interval specified for the exact model, not a schedule copied from another product.
- Interrupting maintenance: a long process may take more than an hour; start it only when the display can remain undisturbed.
- Assuming a screen protector or cleaning product helps: the documented prevention methods are usage variation, brightness control, built-in protections, maintenance and support.
- Treating a laboratory hour count as a lifespan: controlled workloads and brightness levels do not represent every home or office.
- Assuming newer and brighter means burn-in-proof: RTINGS’ brightness comparisons do not establish a proportional reduction in image-retention risk.
- Ignoring regional warranty limits: verify the exact model, country, date and required care steps before relying on coverage.
A practical routine
- Set brightness to the lowest comfortable level for the room and task.
- Enable pixel or screen shift and logo dimming in the OLED-care menu.
- Configure a short idle power-off timer and auto-hide fixed desktop elements.
- Vary applications, channels, games and wallpapers instead of leaving one bright layout fixed.
- Turn the display off when you leave for an extended period; leave it connected to power if the manual requires standby maintenance.
- When a ghost appears, switch to varied content, observe it during normal use and run only the documented model-specific process.
- If it persists, photograph the symptom and contact manufacturer support with your model and usage details.
