Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →To reduce OBS GPU usage, first check whether OBS is actually missing frames, then reduce competing GPU work, simplify your scenes and sources, and lower output resolution or frame rate only if needed. OBS uses the GPU to render and composite scenes; switching to a hardware encoder can help with encoding work, but it does not remove that rendering load. There is no universal GPU percentage that a nonstop stream should target.
Find out whether GPU use is the problem
High GPU utilization by itself does not prove that your stream is failing. In OBS, check the Stats panel for rendering lag and encoding lag, and note whether a game or another GPU-heavy application is running at the same time. Rendering/compositing and encoding are separate workloads, so identify which counter is increasing before changing settings.
The exact bottleneck depends on your operating system, GPU, OBS log, encoder, scene and sources. Without those details, no particular setting or GPU upgrade can be guaranteed to help.
Reduce competing GPU work first
Run OBS as administrator on Windows
- Close OBS.
- Right-click the OBS shortcut and choose Run as administrator.
- Reopen the Stats panel and check whether rendering lag improves during a representative stream test.
OBS recommends this as an initial Windows troubleshooting step because it can allow Windows to reserve GPU capacity for OBS. It is not a general performance guarantee.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Free capacity from other applications
- Close programs you know are using the GPU, such as a second game or GPU-intensive creative application.
- If you are gaming while streaming, cap the game frame rate at your monitor’s refresh rate or enable V-Sync.
- If the game still competes with OBS, lower its graphics quality and check the OBS counters again.
These steps reduce competing work without changing the stream’s output target.
Simplify scenes and sources
Every active scene has work to render and composite. Review the scene used for the stream and remove sources that are not needed for that program. Reduce expensive sources where practical, and use lower-resolution capture or media when the full source resolution is unnecessary.

- Look for large browser or media sources. OBS notes that a source covering the full canvas can still consume resources even when much of it is empty.
- Keep separate scene collections for distinct show formats or stream uses rather than accumulating every source in one setup.
- Do not assume that every hidden source behaves identically across OBS versions or that removing one source will produce a predictable percentage reduction.
Lower OBS output demands if lag remains
In OBS, open Settings → Video and test a lower output resolution, frame rate, or both. Change one value at a time and observe the Stats panel. OBS specifically suggests trying 30 fps when 60 fps is not working. A lower base canvas is more disruptive because sources may need repositioning; reserve that change for systems that remain severely short on GPU resources.

| Output | AV1 or H.265 | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube-recommended live-streaming bitrates, not universal minimums or GPU targets. YouTube’s live guidance specifies RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1, up to 60 fps, CBR, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Confirm that your upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate.

Choose an encoder without confusing it with rendering
When supported by your hardware, OBS generally recommends hardware encoding because a specialized component can handle encoding efficiently and take work away from the CPU. Available encoders and their quality depend on the hardware and platform. OBS documents NVENC and AMD AMF support on Windows and Linux, and Apple VideoToolbox with platform-specific limits.
Hardware encoding does not eliminate the GPU work of rendering and compositing scenes. If OBS is reporting rendering lag, changing the encoder alone may not solve the problem. Nor does hardware encoding guarantee lower total GPU utilization in every configuration. Check current OBS and hardware support before selecting a specific encoder; avoid treating advanced encoder presets as universal GPU optimizations.

Test HAGS only as a Windows troubleshooting step
If OBS performance problems or hardware-encoder failures persist on Windows 10 or 11, test turning off Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS), then restart the computer and compare results. OBS presents this as a conditional troubleshooting step, not a setting everyone should enable or disable.
Follow the current OBS HAGS troubleshooting guidance for the relevant Windows settings path.
Validate changes before leaving a stream unattended
- Make one change at a time so you can tell what affected performance.
- Test with movement and audio similar to the actual program; a static scene may not reveal the same workload.
- Watch OBS rendering and encoding lag counters, then check YouTube stream health and any messages.
- Repeat the test after meaningful changes to scenes, sources, OBS, drivers, encoder settings or the operating system.
YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event. The cited guidance does not establish a universal soak-test duration or guarantee uninterrupted operation.

If the goal is a continuous YouTube channel rather than keeping an OBS computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a live camera. Nothing has to stay on at home, and the stream continues from the cloud with your computer off. Every slot streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60 fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is YouTube-only. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
