Start with the installation, not the compressor. A window air conditioner that rattles or makes the wall hum is often transferring vibration through a loose bracket, uneven sill, hard contact point, or improvised support. Turn the unit off, verify that the window frame and support are sound, fasten the unit with a properly rated bracket or rail, add compatible neoprene isolation pads, seal sash and perimeter gaps, and clean the filter. If the compressor itself remains objectionably loud, a variable-speed, U-shaped, or saddle-style replacement can reduce the noise path because more of the compressor sits outside the room.
Do not treat one noise figure as a guarantee. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) reports that window units can produce interior noise levels as high as 62 dB, but that is not a prediction for every model, room, or installation. Installation quality can change what you hear substantially.

Identify what kind of noise you have
Listen to the unit while it starts, runs, and shuts down. The timing and location of the sound usually point to the part that needs attention.
| What you hear or feel | Most likely path | First inspection |
|---|---|---|
| Rattle or buzz that follows compressor cycles | Loose stand, bracket, side curtain, cabinet panel, sash contact, or fastener | Check the support hardware, window contact points, side panels, and cabinet screws with the unit switched off. |
| Low-frequency hum felt through the sill or wall | Structure-borne vibration passing through hard or unstable contact points | Look for missing, crushed, or badly positioned isolation material and for a bracket that is not rigidly attached. |
| Air hiss or whistle | Air leaking through sash, side-panel, sill, head, or perimeter gaps | Inspect the weatherstripping and gasket around the installed unit without blocking drainage or required airflow. |
| Noise that recently became worse | Dusty filter, shifted installation, loose hardware, or a frame or stand that has moved | Clean and reinstall the filter, then check level, fasteners, and the condition of the window frame. |
Noise can have more than one path. A loose panel may rattle while the same unit also sends compressor vibration into the sill. Correct the mechanical support first, then deal with air leaks and maintenance.

Make the installation safe before making it quiet
A quieter unit is not a successful result if it can shift or fall. Follow the air-conditioner manual and applicable local building rules. The New York City Department of Buildings advises supporting a window unit from underneath or with firmly fastened angles, rails, or brackets. It also says the unit should remain in place when the window is opened, shims must be independently fastened, and leveling objects must be secured against vibration.
Inspect the window frame
- Check the sill, jambs, sash, and surrounding trim for rot, cracks, looseness, or movement.
- Confirm that the frame can carry the unit and the support hardware without crushing or pulling away from the building.
- Stop if the frame is deteriorated. Repair the structure or obtain qualified help before reinstalling the air conditioner.
Remove improvised supports
Loose wood, bricks, books, cans, scraps of gypsum board, and similar objects can shift as the compressor starts and stops. They create both a safety hazard and a direct vibration path. Replace them with a support bracket, rail, or angle that is rated for the unit and fastened to the building as directed by the manufacturer and local rules.
Check the support hardware
With the unit off and safely supported, look for missing screws, elongated holes, bent metal, or a stand that can move by hand. Tighten or replace hardware according to the installation instructions. A bracket that is merely touching the wall is not the same as one that is structurally fastened.
Step-by-step procedure to reduce rattling and vibration
- Switch off and unplug the unit. Do not work around the cabinet, stand, sash, or filter while the fan or compressor can start. If the unit is unstable, do not remove its support until it has been made safe.
- Map the noise. From inside the room, note whether the sound comes from the cabinet, the side curtains, the sash, the sill, or the wall. Outside, check whether the bracket or rear of the unit moves when the compressor runs. Do not put your hands near the fan or reach behind an energized unit.
- Verify the frame and load path. Confirm that the sill and surrounding frame are sound and that the unit is supported from underneath or by firmly fastened angles, rails, or brackets. The support should carry the load without relying on loose objects.
- Fasten shims and leveling pieces. If shims are needed to establish the correct position, secure them independently so compressor vibration cannot walk them out. Do not use a loose stack of materials as a permanent leveler.
- Install isolation at the actual contact points. Place compatible open-cell neoprene pads where the unit or support bears on the sill, bracket, rail, or other approved contact surface. FHWA recommends pads at least 1/2 inch (1.27 cm) thick and preferably 1 inch (2.54 cm) thick for window units. Use the thickness and shape only when they fit the unit and do not compromise stability, drainage, or the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Recheck position and level. The unit must sit in the orientation specified by its manual. A pad should isolate vibration, not allow the cabinet to rock, block a drain, or change the intended tilt. After placing the unit, make sure the bracket and window sash still hold it securely.
- Seal the sash and perimeter. Add compatible weatherstripping or gasket around the sash, sill or head, side curtains, and other perimeter gaps. ENERGY STAR lists vinyl-clad foam, EPDM cellular rubber, and silicone rubber as examples that can resist air and water infiltration and ultraviolet degradation. Follow the manual for the exact locations and keep drainage paths, service access, and required ventilation clear.
- Stop panel and hardware rattles. Tighten loose side curtains, cabinet fasteners, and approved mounting hardware. Do not permanently seal a service panel or an opening needed for airflow. Replace damaged panels or fasteners rather than wedging in loose material.
- Clean and reinstall the filter. LG’s support guidance dated October 21, 2023 identifies a dusty filter as a possible reason for louder noise. Clean the filter and reinstall it exactly as the manual directs; a filter that is missing, wet, distorted, or fitted incorrectly can create a new airflow problem.
- Run a controlled test. Restore power and listen through a complete start-up and cooling cycle. Check from inside and outside without touching moving parts. If the rattle has stopped but a low hum remains in the wall or sill, inspect the isolation and support path again. If the noise is unchanged, the compressor or fan may be the dominant source.
- Inspect periodically. Recheck the unit’s position, fasteners, pads, seals, and frame condition at intervals and after any event that could move the window or bracket. A pad can compress and a gasket can wear; neither should be allowed to turn a secure installation into a loose one.
Use the right isolation material
Rubber or neoprene helps when vibration is crossing from the air conditioner into the sill, bracket, or wall. It works by interrupting the hard contact that carries mechanical energy into the building. The material must be placed at a real load-bearing interface and must remain stable under the unit’s weight.

FHWA’s thickness guidance
FHWA recommends open-cell neoprene pads at least 1/2 inch (1.27 cm) thick and preferably 1 inch (2.54 cm) thick under window air conditioners. The same guidance calls for neoprene gasketing around the perimeter. These are recommendations for an installation approach, not a guaranteed decibel reduction for a particular consumer pad.
How to choose placement
- Use pads under approved support contact points, such as the sill interface or a support bracket, rather than placing a soft block where it can let the unit slide.
- Keep pads out of condensate drainage paths and away from openings that the manual requires for ventilation or service.
- Do not use a pad to compensate for a weak frame, an undersized bracket, or a badly positioned unit.
- Replace material that is torn, permanently crushed, soaked, or no longer holding the unit firmly.
Seal air leaks without trapping water or heat
Air leakage creates hiss and whistle, allows outdoor noise into the room, and can make loose curtains or trim vibrate. Seal the gaps that the installation leaves around the sash, sill or head, side curtains, and perimeter, using a material compatible with the unit and window.
ENERGY STAR identifies vinyl-clad foam, EPDM cellular rubber, and silicone rubber as examples of weatherstripping or gasket materials for room air conditioners. These materials are intended to resist air and water infiltration and ultraviolet degradation. Measure the gap before choosing thickness: an over-compressed seal can distort the sash, while an undersized seal will not close the path.

Do not caulk over drainage holes, block the unit’s condensate route, cover a required air opening, or permanently close a panel that must be removed for cleaning and service. If the manual specifies a particular gasket or sealing location, follow that instruction instead of substituting a generic product.

Quiet the common causes of rattling
Loose side curtains and cabinet panels
Side curtains can buzz when their frame is not tight against the window jamb. Cabinet panels can resonate when a screw has loosened. With power disconnected, press each accessible panel lightly to locate movement and tighten only the fasteners intended by the manufacturer. A panel that is cracked or missing its fastener needs replacement, not a wad of paper or another loose spacer.
Uneven installation
An uneven unit can load one corner of the sill or stand and make the motor or compressor vibration more noticeable. LG’s October 21, 2023 guidance specifically connects noise with an uneven installation and with a loosely secured iron angle or stand. Correct the support and level according to the manual; do not simply force the cabinet into a new angle with loose objects.
Compressed or missing isolation
If the unit is secure but the wall or sill hums, inspect the pad or gasket at each contact point. A hard metal-to-metal or cabinet-to-sill interface can transmit vibration efficiently. Replace failed material with compatible neoprene or rubber isolation that still leaves the load path stable.

A dirty filter restricts airflow and can make the unit sound louder. Clean it on the schedule and by the method in the manual, then make sure it is fully seated. Also keep the air inlet and outlet clear of curtains, furniture, and objects that can flutter or vibrate against the cabinet.

Maintenance cannot correct a loose bracket or a failing compressor. Treat it as one branch of the diagnosis: clean the filter, confirm the installation is level and secure, and then listen again. If the sound is a new grinding, scraping, electrical buzz, or repeated hard start, stop using the unit and arrange qualified service rather than opening sealed refrigeration components.
Bracket, pad, gasket, or replacement: choose by noise mechanism
| Option | Noise path addressed | When it makes sense | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Support bracket, rail, or angle | Movement and vibration caused by an unstable load path | The unit shifts, the stand is loose, or the window alone is carrying a questionable load. | It must be structurally fastened and rated for the unit; it does not replace a sound frame. |
| Open-cell neoprene isolation pads | Structure-borne vibration at support contact points | The installation is secure but the sill, bracket, or wall carries a low hum. | FHWA recommends at least 1/2 inch and preferably 1 inch; thickness must fit the installation and preserve stability and drainage. |
| Perimeter neoprene gasket or compatible weatherstripping | Air leakage, whistling, and rattling at sash, sill, head, side curtains, and perimeter | There are visible gaps or a hiss that changes when the sash is pressed. | Do not block drainage, ventilation, or service access. |
| Filter cleaning and correct refitting | Airflow noise associated with a dusty or incorrectly installed filter | Noise has increased and the filter is visibly dirty or not seated correctly. | It cannot fix a loose stand, damaged fan, or compressor problem. |
| Variable-speed compressor unit | Compressor source noise and cycling behavior | Support, isolation, sealing, and maintenance are correct but the compressor remains too loud. | Confirm fit, support, drainage, efficiency, serviceability, and the manufacturer’s noise information; quiet operation is not guaranteed for every model. |
| U-shaped or saddle-style unit | Direct transmission of compressor noise into the room | You can replace the unit and want the compressor positioned outside the room. | Window dimensions, support requirements, installation rules, and outdoor exposure still matter. |
When replacing the unit is the better answer
Installation changes are the first choice when the noise comes from rattling hardware, a vibrating sill, or leaking gaps. Replacement becomes more reasonable when the support is secure, the pads and seals are correctly installed, the filter is clean, and the remaining sound is clearly the compressor or fan itself.
ENERGY STAR notes that variable-speed compressor technology can cool quietly. It also identifies U-shaped and saddle-style room air conditioners as designs that provide greater noise reduction because the compressor is outside the room. Those designs can also preserve more of the window opening, but they still require a compatible opening, stable support, correct drainage, and an installation that follows the product manual.
Compare a replacement by more than a marketing word such as “quiet.” Check the published noise information for the exact model, the window and sill dimensions, bracket or rail requirements, condensate handling, efficiency, warranty and service access, and whether the compressor placement changes how the load is supported. A quieter compressor cannot compensate for a weak frame or an unstable installation.

How to make a window AC less disruptive at night
Nighttime complaints are often the same mechanical problems heard in a quieter room. Start with the support and contact points rather than adding a blanket or other material over the cabinet. A cover can obstruct airflow, trap heat, or block service access.
- Run the identification test during a normal cooling cycle and note whether the sound is a rattle, hum, or hiss.
- Secure the bracket, rail, shims, and side curtains; remove every loose improvised support.
- Install the recommended isolation pads and perimeter gasket where the unit contacts the building and window.
- Clean and seat the filter, and keep curtains and furniture away from the air inlet and outlet.
- Use the unit’s own fan, sleep, timer, or low-speed settings only as described in its manual. These settings change operation; they do not repair a vibrating installation.
- If the remaining noise is a steady compressor source rather than a contact rattle, evaluate a variable-speed, U-shaped, or saddle-style replacement.
Stop and get help when the risk is structural
- The frame, sill, or surrounding wall is rotten, cracked, pulling away, or unable to hold fasteners.
- The unit moves when the window opens, when the compressor starts, or when the bracket is touched.
- A support is bent, undersized, corroded, or attached only to trim, siding, or another nonstructural surface.
- Water is entering the wall, pooling indoors, or being diverted by a pad or seal.
- The unit makes grinding, scraping, burning, or electrical sounds after installation checks.
- You cannot follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions or local building requirements safely.
For a physical HVAC installation, a qualified installer or building professional can verify the load path, frame condition, drainage, and electrical safety. Do not trade a few decibels of noise for a falling unit or hidden water damage.
What result to expect
A secure bracket, correctly fastened shims, stable isolation pads, sealed gaps, and a clean filter address the most common installation-related noise paths. They do not promise a universal percentage or decibel reduction: the result depends on the air conditioner, the building structure, the contact points, and the quality of the installation. FHWA’s 62 dB figure is an upper example reported for interior noise from window units, not a guaranteed level for your room.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf the unit remains loud after those checks, the evidence points away from a simple rattle fix and toward the design or condition of the compressor and fan. At that point, compare a properly supported replacement—especially a variable-speed, U-shaped, or saddle-style design—rather than continuing to add loose material around a sound source.
