Start with the TV’s motion setting: open Picture or Picture Settings, find Motionflow (Sony), TruMotion (LG), or a similarly named control, and switch it to Off. If that looks too jerky, leave it enabled at the lowest Smoothness or De-Judder level you find comfortable. A film-oriented mode such as Filmmaker Mode can also reduce processing, but menus and behavior vary by model and software version.

Motion smoothing is optional video processing. It creates additional in-between frames to make movement look more fluid; it is not a property of the movie itself. The steps below show how to reduce that effect without accidentally changing separate blur-reduction or film-cadence controls.

What motion smoothing changes

Televisions analyze consecutive frames and generate intermediate frames so objects appear to move more continuously. Sony describes Motionflow as increasing the number of displayed video frames, while LG describes TruMotion as optimizing fast-moving pictures. This interpolation can make sports and live video look exceptionally fluid, but it can also make a 24-frames-per-second film appear unnaturally smooth or “video-like.”

The processing can introduce halos, warped edges, duplicated objects or sudden changes around fast movement and scene transitions. Those artifacts do not necessarily indicate a damaged panel. They are often a consequence of the selected algorithm and strength.

Manufacturers use different labels and scales. “Soap opera effect” is a common description of the appearance, not a universal menu name. Look for the brand’s own control rather than assuming every set has a switch with that wording.

The fastest way to reduce it

  1. Pause on a familiar scene. Use a movie scene with a slow camera pan, a person walking across the frame and a fast action shot. Familiar material makes small changes easier to see.
  2. Open Picture settings. Press the remote’s Settings, Menu or gear button, then choose Picture, Picture Settings or Advanced Picture Settings.
  3. Find the motion section. Search for Motion, Clarity, Advanced Settings, Motionflow, TruMotion, Smoothness, De-Judder or a similar term.
  4. Compare the current setting with Off. Watch the same scene for several seconds after each change. Switching the feature off is the clearest way to identify whether interpolation is causing the unnatural look.
  5. If Off is too uneven, use the minimum manual level. Choose Custom or User when available, then lower Smoothness or De-Judder. Avoid copying a number from another brand: the scales are not standardized.
  6. Check both film and fast movement. Revisit the movie scene, then a sports or action scene. Keep the least processing that remains comfortable for the content you actually watch.

Change one control at a time. Clearness, De-Blur, black-frame insertion and film-cadence processing can alter motion for different reasons, so changing all of them together makes the result difficult to diagnose.

Motion controls are not interchangeable

A TV may place several options under “motion,” but they do different jobs. Sony’s support information distinguishes Motionflow Smoothness from Clearness and from CineMotion. LG manuals likewise separate TruMotion modes from De-Judder and De-Blur adjustments.

Control type What it changes What to try for a more natural film picture What it does not guarantee
Frame interpolation (Smoothness, Motionflow, TruMotion) Creates intermediate frames to make movement appear more fluid. Set Off, or use the lowest Smoothness/De-Judder value that looks comfortable. It does not repair a source that was mastered with poor motion or compression.
Blur reduction (Clearness, De-Blur) Uses a separate process to make moving details appear sharper; implementation varies by model. Leave it unchanged while testing interpolation, then adjust separately if needed. It is not equivalent to turning interpolation off.
Film-cadence processing (CineMotion, Film Mode, Real Cinema) Detects and handles film-originated cadence, including movies shot at 24 frames per second. Use the mode recommended for film content by your TV, and evaluate it independently of Smoothness. It is not simply another Smoothness slider.
Picture mode (Filmmaker, Cinema and similar) Applies a group of picture defaults, potentially including motion and sharpening choices. Use it as a starting point, then inspect the individual motion control. A mode name alone does not prove that every processing feature is disabled on every model.

The exact options and their interaction depend on the TV’s model, region and software. A “Cinema” label is not a promise that all motion processing is off.

Sony TVs: Motionflow, Smoothness and CineMotion

Sony’s support documentation says Motionflow increases the number of video frames shown to produce smoother movement. On supported models, selecting Custom exposes separate Smoothness and Clearness controls; selecting Off disables Motionflow. Sony also describes CineMotion as a film-content setting for material such as 24-frames-per-second movies. Some regions call that option Film Mode. Availability and labels differ by model and software version. See Sony’s general Android TV instructions at Sony’s picture-settings guide and the model-specific example at Sony’s OLED Android TV support page.

A practical Sony sequence

  1. Open Settings, then Display & Sound or Picture, depending on the interface.
  2. Choose the picture mode you normally use and open the advanced picture or motion options.
  3. Set Motionflow to Off. Watch the same film shot again.
  4. If Off produces more judder than you prefer, choose Custom and lower Smoothness. Leave Clearness as a separate experiment rather than treating it as another Smoothness control.
  5. Test CineMotion (or Film Mode where that name appears) independently. Its purpose is film-cadence handling, not adding the same kind of interpolation as Motionflow.

Some Sony televisions adjust Motionflow automatically and do not expose a manual control. In that case, check the support page for the exact model and current software before assuming the set is malfunctioning.

When Sony shows noise or distortions

Sony’s troubleshooting guidance for noise during fast scenes or scene transitions recommends trying a different Motionflow mode, then using Custom with a lower Smoothness value, and finally turning Motionflow Off if the noise remains. Follow that order while replaying the same troublesome shot. The advice applies to the processing behavior described in Sony’s support article, which was modified on July 6, 2026; individual menus may still differ by model. The troubleshooting page is Sony’s fast-scene noise guide.

LG TVs: TruMotion and De-Judder

LG uses the name TruMotion. LG’s example for 2022 webOS 22 places it at Settings → All Settings → Picture → Advanced Settings → Clarity → TruMotion. That support article, dated July 17, 2026, lists cinematic, natural and smooth choices in its example. Other LG software and models can show a different route or a different set of choices.

An LG manual documents Off, Smooth, Clear and User modes. In User mode, De-Judder and De-Blur are separate adjustments. Use Off first; if you want a small amount of interpolation, choose User and reduce De-Judder rather than raising every clarity control. The manual is available as a PDF at LG’s picture-options and TruMotion manual.

A practical LG sequence

  1. Press the gear button and select All Settings.
  2. Open Picture, then Advanced Settings, Clarity and TruMotion on interfaces that follow the webOS 22 example.
  3. Set TruMotion to Off and replay the film scene.
  4. If you prefer some smoothing, select User where available and lower De-Judder. Adjust De-Blur only after you have evaluated interpolation on its own.
  5. Recheck a fast sports or action sequence. A setting that looks natural for a panning movie shot may feel less comfortable for live sport, and vice versa.

If the listed path is missing, use the TV’s settings search for “TruMotion” or “Clarity,” then consult the support page for the exact model. LG’s labels and available modes are not identical across all webOS generations.

Use a film-oriented picture mode carefully

Filmmaker Mode can be a convenient starting point on supported televisions. LG says that motion smoothing and image sharpening, while useful for much sports and television programming, can make feature films look too smooth and overly processed. LG’s Filmmaker Mode release describes the mode as supporting the presentation intended for film content; read the release at LG’s Filmmaker Mode announcement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mode behavior remains model-dependent. After selecting Filmmaker Mode, open the motion menu and verify the actual TruMotion or Motionflow state. Some televisions expose fewer controls in a protected mode; others permit adjustments. Do not assume that choosing a mode labeled Cinema, Movie or Filmmaker automatically disables every algorithm.

Sony’s CineMotion is a different concept: it is intended to reproduce film content, including 24-fps movies, by handling cadence. It should be evaluated separately from Motionflow Smoothness. Turning CineMotion off is not a substitute for lowering interpolation, and lowering interpolation does not necessarily change cadence handling.

Choose settings by what you watch

Movies and scripted television

Start with interpolation Off. If camera pans look too uneven, add only a small amount of Smoothness or De-Judder. Watch faces, fine textures and objects crossing the frame; these reveal generated-frame errors more reliably than a static shot.

Sports and live broadcasts

Some viewers prefer more smoothing for sports because the ball and players move quickly. There is no universal quality rule that says sports must use the same setting as films. Increase Smoothness only until motion feels comfortable, then check for halos, tearing or distorted backgrounds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Video games

Game picture modes and latency settings can change which processing options are available. If the TV hides Motionflow or TruMotion in a game mode, that is a model-specific behavior; use the TV’s manual rather than forcing a movie-mode setting onto the game input.

Mixed viewing

If several people use the television for different content, save separate picture modes or input-specific settings when the TV supports them. A low-interpolation movie mode and a more fluid sports mode avoid repeatedly changing one global preference.

How to judge whether the picture is more natural

  1. Use identical source material. Stream or play the same scene before and after each change.
  2. Check a slow pan. Look for a film-like cadence without added “video” smoothness.
  3. Check a person walking across a detailed background. Watch for halos, bending lines or a second outline around the subject.
  4. Check a rapid transition. Scene cuts and camera whips can expose processing noise.
  5. Check a dark scene. Some clarity or black-frame processes can alter brightness or flicker independently of interpolation.
  6. Give your eyes a short reset. The smoother image can seem preferable for a minute simply because it is different. Compare again after watching several minutes of the same program.

Use the lowest amount of processing that you find comfortable for each type of content. “Natural” is a viewing preference, not a single number shared by all televisions.

Troubleshooting branches

The motion option is missing

  • Confirm that you are editing the active input and picture mode; some sets store settings separately by input.
  • Look under Picture, Advanced Picture Settings, Clarity or Motion rather than only the top-level Picture menu.
  • Search the exact model’s support page. Sony notes that some sets adjust Motionflow automatically and do not provide an adjustable menu.
  • Check whether a protected mode or game mode limits controls. Switch temporarily to a standard picture mode to identify which options the TV exposes, then decide whether that mode suits your content.

Turning smoothing off makes motion look too juddery

  • Try the lowest available Smoothness or De-Judder value instead of returning to a high preset.
  • Keep film-cadence processing separate. CineMotion, Film Mode or Real Cinema may affect cadence without adding the same interpolation effect.
  • Compare several scenes. A single difficult pan may be a property of the source rather than a setting problem.

Artifacts remain after lowering Smoothness

  • Set interpolation to Off and replay the shot. If the artifact disappears, the motion algorithm was the likely cause.
  • Check Clearness or De-Blur separately; these can introduce a different appearance even with interpolation disabled.
  • Try another source or app. Compression, frame-rate conversion or the broadcaster’s processing can create artifacts that the TV cannot remove.
  • If distortion appears with every source and every picture mode, document the behavior and contact the manufacturer for model-specific support instead of assuming a panel failure.

The TV keeps changing the look

Automatic picture or motion modes can react to the input or content. Disable automatic mode switching only if your model provides that option and you want a fixed presentation. Otherwise, note which input and mode produced the change; support instructions are model-specific.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Searching for one universal “soap opera” toggle: use Motionflow, TruMotion or the label your TV actually provides.
  • Disabling every motion-related feature at once: interpolation, blur reduction and cadence handling are separate. Test them individually.
  • Copying another brand’s numeric setting: Smoothness and De-Judder scales are not standardized.
  • Assuming every Filmmaker or Cinema mode is identical: verify the individual controls on your model.
  • Diagnosing hardware failure from appearance alone: begin with reversible picture-setting changes, test more than one source and consult model-specific support if the issue persists.
  • Buying an accessory to perform the change: the TV’s built-in menu and supplied remote are sufficient; no calibration disc, streaming box or repair tool is required for these adjustments.

When a model-specific manual is necessary

Use the manufacturer’s exact support page when the TV has no visible motion menu, changes settings automatically, or uses terminology not covered here. Sony’s general Motionflow information is available at Sony’s Motionflow technology overview. The pages linked above demonstrate why model and software details matter: one LG route is explicitly for webOS 22, while Sony offers different paths for different Android TV models.

Record the model number, software version, input, picture mode and the exact scene that shows the problem before contacting support. That information lets the manufacturer distinguish interpolation artifacts from source, cadence or input-specific behavior.

Bottom line

For a less processed movie picture, turn Motionflow, TruMotion or the equivalent interpolation control Off, then add only as much Smoothness or De-Judder as your eyes need. Keep Clearness/De-Blur and CineMotion or Film Mode as separate experiments, and verify the result on both a film scene and fast movement. The best setting is model- and content-dependent, but every change is reversible through the TV’s own picture menu.
