How to Reduce Motion Sickness While Watching Immersive Video on Apple Vision Pro

The safest response to motion sickness on Apple Vision Pro is to stop as soon as symptoms appear, then restart only with shorter sessions, less immersive content, a stable upright posture and less visual motion. Turn the Digital Crown to reveal more of your room, make the video window smaller or farther away, and enable Settings > Accessibility > Motion > Reduce Motion. If nearby app content is the trigger, compare Stabilize Nearby Content with the setting on and off. On visionOS 26 or later, Detect High Motion can pause immersive video or reduce immersion.

These measures may reduce discomfort but cannot guarantee that symptoms will not occur. Individual responses differ, and Apple’s guidance is safety advice rather than a clinical treatment or controlled comparison of settings.

Stop immediately when symptoms begin

Apple’s instruction is direct: “Stop using Apple Vision Pro if you feel unwell or experience symptoms of motion sickness.” Read the complete guidance in Apple Support’s motion-sickness article, published July 14, 2026.

Possible symptoms include dizziness or disorientation, nausea, difficulty concentrating or reduced awareness, an upset stomach, increased salivation, headache, fatigue and sweating. Symptoms are not always immediate; depending on the situation, they may take up to 30 minutes to start. Feeling fine during a clip therefore does not prove that the same session length will remain comfortable.

Recover before doing anything safety-sensitive

Remove the headset, sit or stand somewhere stable and wait until you are fully reoriented. Do not drive, operate equipment, climb, exercise or perform another task requiring balance, coordination or sustained attention until you have recovered. Apple’s safety information advises consulting a physician if symptoms persist. Severe, unusual or recurrent symptoms also deserve medical advice rather than repeated self-testing.

Do not assume every unpleasant sensation is motion sickness

Blur, eye strain, a poor fit, headache, an inner-ear problem or another health issue can feel different from motion sickness. Do not use these instructions to diagnose yourself. If discomfort continues when you are not watching moving content, stop using the device and ask a health professional for guidance.

A quick response sequence

  1. Pause or stop the video immediately.
  2. Remove Vision Pro and orient yourself in a stable, familiar space.
  3. Wait until symptoms have completely subsided before driving or doing any task that depends on balance, coordination or focused attention.
  4. For a later attempt, shorten the session and lower immersion before changing anything else.
  5. If symptoms return, stop again instead of trying to finish the clip.

Why immersive video can feel uncomfortable

Two demands commonly overlap:

  • Visual motion: the scene, camera or objects appear to move, including movement at the edge of your view.
  • Head and neck motion: you move or turn your head while the virtual scene changes around you, or you keep looking toward content placed off to one side.

Apple’s accessibility guidance notes that immersive interfaces, animation and interaction can have greater potential for motion sickness and visual or ergonomic discomfort. It recommends gentle camera and video movement, lower animation speed and intensity, particularly for peripheral animation, and interface elements that remain within the field of view. Those are design recommendations, not a diagnosis or a promise that any particular setting will work for you. See Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines for accessibility.

In practical terms, a rapidly moving camera, objects crossing the sides of your view, or a need to keep turning toward windows can all add visual or physical demand. The useful distinction is whether the discomfort follows the video itself, the surrounding app layout, or the act of moving your head. You can then test a targeted change instead of changing every setting at once.

Prepare a lower-motion viewing session

Make the first changes before pressing play. The goal is to remove avoidable motion and give yourself an easy way to stop.

  1. Sit upright in a stable chair. Keep your head as upright as practical and avoid watching while walking, riding in a vehicle or moving around. Place the viewing area in front of you so you do not need repeated, large head turns.
  2. Begin with ordinary or lightly immersive video. Choose a fixed viewpoint, gentle camera movement and limited peripheral action while you are adjusting. Avoid a clip marked as high motion until you know how you respond.
  3. Use a short first session. Apple’s safety guide gives 20 or 30 minutes as an example starting length while adjusting gradually; it is not a universal safe limit. Stop earlier if you notice any warning sign, and take a break before symptoms build.
  4. Keep the room and route clear. You should be able to remove the headset and move safely without stepping over furniture or cables. This does not prevent motion sickness, but it reduces the risk of an accident if you suddenly feel disoriented.
  5. Plan a stop point. Do not continue simply to finish a video. Save your place and remove the headset at the first sign of discomfort.
  6. Change one major variable at a time. If you make the session shorter, reduce immersion, change the window position and switch content simultaneously, you will not know which change helped. Test one adjustment during a brief, repeatable session.

Understand high-motion labels

Apple identifies some apps and Apple Immersive Media with a high-motion label. Customer-captured Spatial Video can also contain high-motion scenes even when the subject matter seems familiar. Treat the label as a warning to choose a shorter test or postpone the clip while acclimating, not as a guarantee that every unlabeled video will be comfortable.

A familiar event can still be visually intense: fast camera movement, rapid turns, action near the edges of the frame or a scene that repeatedly changes direction may be demanding. Start with the gentlest available material and reserve labeled high-motion content for a later, very brief experiment, if you choose to try it at all.

Reduce the amount of visual motion

Reveal more of the real room with the Digital Crown

While wearing Vision Pro, turn the Digital Crown so more of your surroundings become visible. Lower immersion makes the virtual scene less dominant and can provide a stronger visual reference for stability. You can turn the crown back gradually, but stop if symptoms return.

This is an immediate viewing change rather than a content edit. It can be useful when a scene feels too enveloping, when you first notice disorientation, or when you are testing whether immersion itself is the dominant trigger. Keep the crown at the less-immersive position for the rest of that short trial rather than repeatedly moving it back and forth.

Make the video window smaller or farther away

Apple advises reducing a window’s size or increasing its distance when visual motion is uncomfortable. A smaller field of moving imagery occupies less of your view; a farther window can reduce how strongly the scene dominates your vision. Apply one change at a time so you can tell which arrangement feels better.

Position the window where you can watch without repeatedly looking to the side or tilting your neck. If reducing size helps but moving the window farther away does not, keep the arrangement that feels more stable. Neither change removes motion encoded in the video, so pair it with lower-motion content when necessary.

Turn on Reduce Motion

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Accessibility.
  3. Tap Motion.
  4. Turn on Reduce Motion.

This system setting reduces motion in supported visionOS interface effects. It does not remove movement that is part of the video itself, so continue to choose gentler content and use the Digital Crown when needed. If menus and transitions are the main problem, this is a logical first system-level test; if a racing camera or rapidly moving scene is the problem, change the viewing setup as well.

Test Stabilize Nearby Content when apps in your space are the trigger

Some people feel discomfort not from the movie itself but from app windows or other content positioned in the surrounding space. In visionOS 2.1 and later, Apple provides Stabilize Nearby Content in the current support instructions.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Awareness & Safety.
  3. Choose Stabilize Nearby Content.
  4. Use the setting for a session, then compare it with the setting off during another short session.

Apple says the change can take up to 30 seconds to apply fully. Give it that time before deciding whether the result is different. The safety guide may use the wording “Stabilize Near Content”; follow the exact label shown by your installed visionOS version. This option is a testable adjustment, not a proven prevention method, so keep the session short while comparing it.

  • 2+ HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — Charge less, play longer and stay in the action with an improved battery that keeps up. *Based on the graphic performance of the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 platform vs the Meta Quest 2 platform.

Evaluate the option only when you are feeling well. If you toggle it after symptoms have already started, the discomfort can obscure the result. Keep nearby windows in front of you during both trials so placement, rather than the setting, is not the changing factor.

Use Detect High Motion on visionOS 26 or later

Apple’s safety guide documents Detect High Motion for visionOS 26 and later. It can detect high motion and either pause an immersive video or reduce immersion. You choose the response and a sensitivity level.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Awareness & Safety.
  3. Select Detect High Motion.
  4. Choose whether Vision Pro should pause videos or reduce immersion when high motion is detected.
  5. Select the sensitivity that suits your tolerance.

Pausing is the more interruptive response: playback stops so you can reorient or leave the session. Reducing immersion keeps the video from filling your view while allowing it to continue. Choose the response that makes it easiest for you to stop safely. The sensitivity choice is personal; start conservatively rather than treating it as a way to make intense content harmless.

The feature is an additional aid. It may not identify every scene that causes discomfort, and it does not make high-motion content risk-free. Continue to stop manually when you feel unwell.

Build tolerance gradually instead of pushing through

Acclimation should be incremental. A practical pattern is to change only one major variable at a time: content intensity, immersion, window size, session length or a system setting. If a session causes symptoms, return to the last arrangement that felt comfortable rather than trying to “train through” the reaction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Stage What to do What to watch for
First tests Sit upright, use low-motion content, keep immersion reduced and watch for a short period. Early dizziness, stomach upset, headache, sweating or difficulty concentrating.
Comfortable short sessions Repeat the same setup on separate occasions and take breaks before discomfort appears. Delayed symptoms later in the session or after removing the headset.
One change at a time Gradually increase immersion or try a more active clip, but do not change several settings together. Whether the new content or setting consistently brings symptoms back.
High-motion experiments Use a brief test only after gentler viewing is comfortable; enable Detect High Motion on supported software. Any warning sign. Stop rather than extending the test.

Breaks are part of the plan, not evidence that you failed. Because symptoms can be delayed by up to 30 minutes, leave enough time between experiments to notice how you feel before increasing intensity. A comfortable short session on one day is not proof that a longer session or a different clip will be comfortable.

Match the adjustment to the likely trigger

What seems to trigger discomfort First change Other adjustment to test
The scene fills your view with fast camera or object movement. Choose lower-motion content and turn the Digital Crown to reduce immersion. Make the window smaller or farther away; use Detect High Motion on visionOS 26 or later.
Moving app windows or content around you feel unstable. Try Stabilize Nearby Content on visionOS 2.1 or later. Compare it off, allow up to 30 seconds after each toggle, and reposition windows in front of you.
Interface transitions or system animations are uncomfortable. Turn on Settings > Accessibility > Motion > Reduce Motion. Reduce window dominance and use a shorter session.
Looking to the side requires repeated head turns. Arrange apps and video directly in front of you and keep your head upright. Sit upright and remove peripheral windows that invite unnecessary scanning.
Symptoms begin even with gentle content. Stop, remove Vision Pro and recover fully. Seek medical advice if symptoms persist, recur or seem unrelated to viewing motion.

No official source cited here provides a head-to-head measurement showing that one adjustment works better than another. Choose the smallest change that removes the apparent trigger, and keep a note of the content and settings that preceded symptoms. Record whether the trigger was immersive video, a surrounding window, head movement or an interface transition; this can make a later, cautious comparison more informative.

What to do if a setting does not help

Reduce Motion changes menus but not the movie

Reduce Motion affects supported interface effects. If the camera movement inside the video remains the problem, use lower-motion content, a smaller or more distant window and less immersion. A system animation setting cannot rewrite motion recorded in a video.

Stabilize Nearby Content feels worse

Turn it off and compare during a separate short session. Apple specifically recommends trying the setting both on and off when nearby content causes discomfort. Wait up to 30 seconds after changing it, and do not evaluate it while you are already symptomatic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Detect High Motion interrupts viewing

Pausing or reducing immersion is the feature’s intended response. You can choose the other response or adjust sensitivity in its settings, but do not disable the aid merely to continue a scene that is making you ill. Stop manually if symptoms appear.

You cannot identify the trigger

Return to the simplest arrangement: seated, upright, low-motion content, reduced immersion, a small or distant window and a short session. Reintroduce only one variable at a time. If discomfort still occurs, stop using Vision Pro and discuss it with a clinician.

The symptom appears after you remove the headset

Delayed onset is possible, so do not assume that removing the headset means you can immediately resume normal activities. Sit somewhere stable, wait until you are fully reoriented and monitor whether symptoms subside. Do not drive or perform a safety-sensitive task while dizzy, nauseated, unusually tired or unable to concentrate.

Health conditions and professional advice

Apple’s safety information names migraine headaches, eye or vision conditions, inner-ear conditions and psychological conditions as examples that may be aggravated by Vision Pro use. This is a reason to consult a medical provider before experimenting with immersive content if one of these conditions applies to you; it is not a claim that every person with such a condition will react the same way.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Get medical advice when symptoms persist after stopping, are severe or unusual, repeatedly return despite conservative viewing, or occur outside headset use. Do not take medication or buy an accessory as a substitute for stopping and recovering; the guidance above does not establish a product or treatment that reliably prevents motion sickness.

Key points to remember

  • Stop at the first symptom and wait until fully reoriented before driving or doing tasks requiring balance, coordination or safety attention.
  • Start with short, low-motion sessions; Apple’s 20- or 30-minute example is not a guaranteed limit.
  • Keep your head upright, sit upright and place content in front of you.
  • Reduce immersion with the Digital Crown, then reduce window size or move the window farther away.
  • Use Reduce Motion for supported interface effects.
  • For nearby app content, compare Stabilize Nearby Content on and off in visionOS 2.1 or later and allow up to 30 seconds for changes.
  • On visionOS 26 or later, configure Detect High Motion to pause video or reduce immersion.
  • High-motion labels are warnings, not guarantees; customer-captured Spatial Video can also contain intense movement.
  • Symptoms may be delayed by up to 30 minutes, so increase exposure cautiously.
  • No setting, session length or purchased accessory is established as a guaranteed prevention method.

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly should I stop if I feel motion sickness in Vision Pro?

Stop as soon as you feel unwell or notice symptoms. Remove the headset and wait until you are fully reoriented before driving, exercising, climbing or doing any task requiring balance, coordination or sustained attention.

Can I prevent motion sickness by turning on Reduce Motion?

Reduce Motion can reduce supported visionOS interface effects, but it does not remove movement recorded in a video. Pair it with shorter sessions, lower-motion content, reduced immersion and a smaller or more distant window.

What does the Digital Crown do for motion sickness?

Turning the Digital Crown to show more of the real room reduces immersion and gives you a stronger visual reference for stability. Turn it gradually and stop if discomfort returns.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should Stabilize Nearby Content be on or off?

Apple recommends comparing it both ways when nearby app content is uncomfortable. In visionOS 2.1 or later, allow up to 30 seconds after each change before evaluating it, and compare during separate short sessions.

What is Detect High Motion?

On visionOS 26 or later, Detect High Motion can respond to detected high motion by pausing an immersive video or reducing immersion. You can select a response and sensitivity, but the feature is not a guarantee against symptoms.

How long should my first Vision Pro session be?

Apple’s safety guide gives 20 or 30 minutes as an example starting length while adjusting gradually. It is not a universal safe limit: stop sooner if symptoms begin, and remember that onset can be delayed by up to 30 minutes.

Does a high-motion label mean an unlabeled video is safe?

No. The label warns that some apps and Apple Immersive Media may contain high motion, while customer-captured Spatial Video can also have intense scenes. An unlabeled video may still make you uncomfortable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I talk to a doctor?

Seek medical advice if symptoms persist after stopping, are severe or unusual, repeatedly return despite conservative viewing, or occur outside headset use. Apple also advises people with migraine, eye or vision, inner-ear or psychological conditions to consult a medical provider because those conditions may be aggravated.

The Bottom Line

Stop at the first sign of discomfort. After you recover, retry only with a shorter session, gentler content, an upright posture, less immersion and less dominant window placement. Use Reduce Motion for interface effects, compare Stabilize Nearby Content when surrounding apps are the trigger, and configure Detect High Motion on visionOS 26 or later. These steps can minimize risk, but no setting guarantees that immersive video will be comfortable.
