If fast camera movement makes you dizzy or nauseated, begin with the game’s Accessibility, Camera, Display or Comfort menu. Turn down or disable camera shake, head or weapon bob, motion blur, speed lines and automatic camera movement. Then lower look sensitivity or camera speed, test another perspective or follow distance, and adjust field of view in small steps. In virtual reality, also change locomotion, movement speed, turning and tunnel-vision options.
Change one setting at a time, test briefly, and stop as soon as symptoms worsen. These controls can reduce visual discomfort, but they are not a guaranteed treatment and there is no universally best combination.

Why fast movement in a game can make you feel sick
Motion sickness can occur when your eyes see movement that your balance system and body do not detect. In a game, the camera may rush forward, sway, bob or rotate while you remain physically still. Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 117 describes this visual-versus-physical mismatch and notes that “General screen and camera movements can also pose barriers by eliciting motion sickness during play.”
The same mismatch can be intensified by motion blur, a shaking horizon, weapon sway, speed lines, automatic camera recentering or a rapidly changing field of view. Virtual-reality games add another source of conflict: the display moves with the simulated world while your body is stationary. The CDC Yellow Book 2026 lists virtual reality and simulators among situations that can provoke motion sickness and discusses general measures such as seeing a horizon and avoiding visually demanding tasks. That is broad motion-sickness guidance, not a clinical trial of a particular game setting.

Use this five-minute setup before playing
- Open the comfort-related menus. Look under Accessibility, Camera, Display, Video, Controls or VR Comfort. Menu names and locations differ by title, platform and version.
- Disable or minimize visual movement effects. Start with camera shake, head bob, weapon bob or sway, motion blur and speed lines. If a control has Low, Reduced or Off choices, begin with the least movement.
- Slow camera input. Lower horizontal and vertical look sensitivity or camera speed. If the game automatically centers the view, turn that behavior off when possible.
- Test a different viewpoint. Try first person versus third person, or increase the camera-follow distance if the game provides it.
- Make a short test run. Walk, turn and perform the movement that normally causes trouble for a few minutes. Keep the change only if it feels better; otherwise restore it and test the next option.
Changing one control at a time tells you what actually helps. Changing every option together can leave you unsure which setting to keep and can make the game feel unnecessarily slow or visually limited.
Camera and visual settings to try
| Setting | What to try first | Why it may help | Trade-off to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Camera shake | Set to Low or Off | Removes artificial jolts during impacts, sprinting or explosions. | Hits and movement may feel less dramatic. |
| Head or camera bob | Set to Low or Off | Stops the horizon and viewpoint from rising and falling with each step. | Walking can look less natural. |
| Weapon sway | Reduce or disable | Keeps the held item from sliding across the screen while you move. | Some aiming or animation cues may be less apparent. |
| Motion blur | Off, or the lowest strength | Preserves a sharper image during quick turns and travel. | Fast movement can look harsher or less cinematic. |
| Speed lines and screen effects | Off or reduced | Removes extra streaks, flashes and overlays that imply acceleration. | You may lose a visual indication of sprinting or a special ability. |
| Automatic camera movement | Disable auto-centering, follow sway or scripted camera motion when offered | Leaves rotation under your control instead of adding movement you did not request. | You may need to center the view yourself. |
| Look sensitivity or camera speed | Lower horizontal and vertical values | Slows rotation and makes small input errors less abrupt. | Turning and checking behind you take longer. |
Some titles combine several effects under names such as Screen Effects, Camera Effects, Immersion or Cinematic Motion. Read the description for each toggle rather than assuming that a single “motion” switch controls everything.
Camera shake and bob
Shake is usually event-based: recoil, damage, explosions or landing. Bob is usually continuous, tied to walking or sprinting. If one is tolerable and the other is not, adjust them separately. In a game with only one combined slider, reduce it enough to keep the horizon stable.
Blur, sway and speed lines
Blur can hide visual detail precisely when the scene is moving fastest. Weapon sway keeps a large object moving near the center of your vision, while speed lines add peripheral motion. Disable these effects before changing more fundamental controls such as field of view.
Control how quickly the camera moves
Lowering look sensitivity does not reduce the character’s walking speed; it reduces how rapidly the view responds to the stick or mouse. If a game has a separate Camera Speed, Rotation Speed, Turn Acceleration or Sprint Camera setting, reduce those as well. Keep horizontal and vertical values independent if one direction is more troublesome.
Acceleration can be more uncomfortable than a steady turn. When available, choose a constant or linear response instead of an acceleration curve, and turn off camera auto-centering. A camera that snaps back after you stop moving can create an unexpected second rotation.
For mouse controls, make small changes to in-game sensitivity rather than relying only on operating-system pointer speed. For a controller, lower both look sensitivity and any aiming or vehicle-camera sensitivity that uses the same view. Test ordinary walking, sprinting and rapid 180-degree turns separately; one setting may feel fine during exploration but too slow during combat.

Try another perspective or camera distance
First person versus third person
First person places the simulated movement directly at the center of your vision. Third person can provide a visible character and a more distant reference, which some players find easier to tolerate. Others feel worse when a character moves across the screen while the camera follows. Test both perspectives in the same area and at the same movement speed; comfort is individual.
Camera-follow distance
A closer third-person camera fills more of your peripheral vision with rapidly changing scenery. If the game offers a follow-distance slider, move the camera back in small increments. PlayStation’s comfort guidance for The Last of Us Part II identifies camera-follow distance as an available option; that example does not establish a best distance for every game.
Adjust field of view gradually
Field of view (FOV) controls how much of the game world is visible at once. A wider view shows more of the surroundings, while a narrower view shows less. Either direction can feel better depending on the game, display and player. Xbox accessibility guidance discusses tuning FOV to viewing conditions and notes that lower angles can reduce a “fishbowl” appearance in some situations, but it does not establish one universally comfortable value.

- Change it by a small amount rather than jumping to an extreme.
- Walk, turn and sprint for a few minutes.
- Keep the change only if the image feels steadier and your symptoms do not increase.
A very wide FOV may make objects at the edges appear to move quickly or stretch. A very narrow FOV may make turning feel claustrophobic and can increase the apparent rotation needed to look around. The comfortable point is the one that gives you a stable horizon and enough peripheral information without making the scene feel distorted.
Virtual-reality comfort controls
VR requires additional choices because the display occupies your view and simulated movement may not match your body’s motion. Meta’s developer documentation identifies movement method, movement speed, turn style and optional tunnel vision as comfort choices. These are personalization controls, not a recipe that works for everyone.
Locomotion method
If smooth movement causes symptoms, try teleportation, dash movement or another discrete method when the title supports it. If you prefer continuous movement, begin at a slower speed and increase it only after several comfortable sessions.
Turn style
Snap turning rotates the view in fixed increments; smooth turning rotates continuously. Test both. Snap turning can reduce continuous visual rotation, while some players prefer smooth turning for precision. Use the smallest snap angle that feels comfortable if the game provides several choices.

A vignette narrows the visible image during movement, reducing peripheral motion. Increase it when symptoms appear and reduce it later only if you remain comfortable. It can hide part of the scene, so treat it as a comfort aid rather than a visual-quality setting.

Compare alternatives systematically
When a game offers several camera modes, compare them on the same route instead of judging from a menu preview. Check how much the camera moves during walking, sprinting, impacts and scripted events; whether automatic movement can be disabled; how finely you can set camera speed and sensitivity; which FOV values are available; and whether first- or third-person views change your comfort. In VR, add locomotion method and turn style to the comparison. Choose the option that leaves you comfortable while preserving enough visibility and control to play. None of these choices is ranked as best for everyone.
Write down the values that work. Some games store settings per save or profile, while others use one global configuration. After an update, a platform change or a new controller, check the menus again because labels and defaults can change. Screenshots or a short note make it easier to restore a comfortable setup.
A practical way to find your combination
Use a repeatable test instead of changing settings at random:
Recommended Free Tools
- Choose a safe area with a clear horizon and no combat or scripted camera sequence.
- Start with camera shake, bob, blur, sway and speed lines minimized.
- Perform the same route at walking speed, then repeat while turning and sprinting.
- Record a simple comfort rating from 0 (no symptoms) to 10 (severe symptoms) immediately after each short test.
- Change one variable, return to the same route and compare the result.
- Stop the test if symptoms rise. Do not continue to collect data while feeling ill.
Once you find a tolerable baseline, restore only the effects you value, one at a time. For example, you might keep a little weapon sway while leaving camera shake and motion blur off. Save the configuration in a per-game profile if the platform supports profiles.
No purchase is required
The comfort controls above are software settings. The authoritative accessibility and motion-sickness guidance does not establish that buying a particular headset, controller, monitor or other product prevents symptoms. Do not treat a hardware purchase as a substitute for changing the camera, pausing or stopping. If the title offers too little control and repeatedly makes you ill, choosing another game is a valid solution.
What to do when symptoms begin
Pause or stop the game as soon as you notice dizziness, nausea, headache, sweating or disorientation. Remove the headset if you are in VR and sit somewhere stable. The reviewed game-accessibility sources do not test a specific recovery routine. General NHS motion-sickness advice for travel suggests getting fresh air and looking at a fixed point; use that only as general context, not as proven treatment for game symptoms.
Do not resume until you feel normal. If symptoms are severe, persist after stopping, recur frequently, or concern you for another reason, seek qualified medical advice. A game setting should not be used to explain away ongoing dizziness or other unexplained symptoms.
Troubleshoot common situations
“Turning is the problem, but walking is fine.”
Lower horizontal look sensitivity, disable smooth camera acceleration and test snap turning if available. Keep vertical sensitivity unchanged if looking up and down is comfortable.

“Sprint and vehicles trigger symptoms.”
Turn off sprint camera sway, shake and speed lines first. Reduce camera-follow movement and vehicle FOV changes if those controls exist. Test ordinary walking separately so you do not make every movement unnecessarily slow.
“Third person did not help.”
Move the follow camera farther back, reduce its automatic orbit or return to first person with bob and blur disabled. A perspective change alone is not guaranteed to help.
“The game has almost no comfort options.”
Use the controls that are present: lower look sensitivity, reduce display effects, choose a less aggressive FOV and take shorter sessions with breaks. If the title forces a camera effect or movement sequence that reliably makes you ill, stopping that game is a reasonable choice.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors“The settings reset after an update.”
Recheck Accessibility, Camera and Display menus after a patch or platform change. Save screenshots or notes of your preferred values so you can restore them quickly.
Limits of these recommendations
Menus, labels and available controls vary by game, platform and version. The sources support offering control over camera movement, perspective, FOV and VR locomotion, but they do not rank settings universally or provide a percentage reduction in symptoms. A change that helps one player can make another feel worse.
There is also no evidence here that buying a particular headset, controller, monitor or other product prevents game-related motion sickness. Treat the controls as adjustable comfort options, not a guaranteed cure. The safest rule is simple: if a setting or movement makes symptoms worse, undo it and stop playing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which setting should I change first for motion sickness in a game?
Start by turning camera shake, head or weapon bob, motion blur and speed lines to Low or Off. Then lower camera speed or look sensitivity and test briefly.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I use a wider or narrower field of view?
There is no universal best direction or value. Change FOV in small steps, test the same movement, and keep the setting that feels steadier without increasing symptoms.
Best Value
Can third-person view prevent motion sickness?
It may help some players, while others prefer first person. Compare both in the same area and also test the third-person follow distance and automatic camera movement.
What VR settings are worth trying?
Look for movement method, movement speed, turn style and tunnel vision or vignette controls. Try a less continuous movement method or slower speed, and compare snap with smooth turning.
What should I do when I start feeling sick?
Pause or stop immediately, remove a VR headset, and wait until you feel normal. General travel advice such as fresh air or looking at a fixed point may provide context, but it is not proven game-specific treatment.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Do I need to buy a special monitor, controller or headset?
No purchase is established as a solution by the cited guidance. Begin with the game’s comfort settings, and stop using a title that reliably makes you ill.
Why do I feel sick only while sprinting or driving?
Sprint and vehicle cameras often add sway, shake, speed lines or FOV changes. Disable those effects first and test ordinary walking separately.
What if a game has almost no accessibility options?
Use whatever controls exist, such as lower sensitivity, reduced display effects or a less aggressive FOV. Take shorter sessions with breaks, and stop playing if the forced camera movement remains intolerable.
The Bottom Line
Start with the least disruptive changes: disable shake, bob, blur and speed lines, slow camera input, then test perspective, follow distance and FOV one at a time. VR players should also compare locomotion and turn styles. Stop as soon as symptoms worsen; these are personal comfort adjustments, not a guaranteed cure.
