The most reliable way to reduce moisture absorption is to treat the composite as a system: make the fiber surface more compatible with epoxy, remove voids and other ingress paths during processing, select a suitable matrix and architecture, and validate the finished part under its real temperature and humidity exposure. Alkali, silane, and acetylation treatments can help, but none is universally optimal; excessive treatment can weaken the fiber and leave you with a less durable composite.
Why natural-fiber epoxy composites absorb moisture
Plant fibers contain cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin and other constituents with hydrophilic chemical groups. These groups attract and bind water. When the fiber is embedded in epoxy, moisture can still enter through the fiber itself, through an imperfect fiber–matrix interface, or through pores and cracks in the laminate.

Water uptake usually appears first as mass gain. The fibers can swell, changing thickness and in-plane dimensions. At longer exposure times, absorbed water may plasticize the matrix, weaken interfacial bonding and accelerate debonding. The result can be lower stiffness, strength, impact resistance or fatigue life, as well as dimensional instability.

The magnitude and timing of the change depend on fiber species and chemistry, fiber volume fraction, orientation, laminate geometry, epoxy formulation and cure, void content, temperature, humidity history and whether the part sees liquid water, condensation, salt water or repeated wet–dry cycles. A diffusion curve measured during the first hours or days is therefore not a complete service-life prediction.

Start with a baseline instead of guessing at a treatment
Before changing the fiber chemistry, document how the current composite behaves. Use specimens made from the same fiber batch, fiber fraction, layup, epoxy, cure schedule and geometry. At minimum, record:
- Dry mass and thickness (or other relevant dimensions).
- Fiber type, surface condition, fiber fraction and orientation.
- Epoxy resin, hardener ratio and cure history.
- Void or visible-defect observations and specimen conditioning history.
- Exposure medium, temperature, relative humidity or immersion condition, and duration.
- Tensile, flexural, impact or fatigue results before and after conditioning.
Without a matched untreated control, a lower water-uptake number can be caused by a change in fiber content, cure or specimen geometry rather than by the proposed treatment.
What actually reduces moisture ingress
Improve fiber–epoxy compatibility
An interface that wets poorly or contains gaps gives water a relatively easy path into the laminate. Better chemical interaction and better physical wetting can reduce that pathway and improve load transfer. Surface treatments are therefore useful candidates, but the correct chemistry depends on the fiber surface, the functional group on the coupling agent and the epoxy system.

| Alkali treatment | Can remove some surface constituents and expose a surface that interacts more effectively with the matrix. | Excessive concentration, time or rinsing errors can damage the fiber and reduce its strength. A recipe proven for one plant fiber is not automatically suitable for another. | Water uptake, swelling, single-fiber or bundle strength, interface quality and retained laminate strength. |
| Silane coupling treatment | Can create a more compatible chemical bridge between the fiber surface and epoxy when the silane chemistry is matched correctly. | Performance depends on surface preparation, silane functional group, concentration, hydrolysis and drying. Over-treatment can alter fiber strength or make impregnation more difficult. | Fiber strength, mass gain, dimensional swelling and laminate properties. |
The 2026 review Moisture-induced swelling in natural fiber-reinforced composites: A critical review of chemical treatments, hybrid strategies, and environmental durability summarizes the central trade-off this way: “Chemical treatments such as alkali, silane, and acetylation reduce water absorption but may compromise fiber strength if overapplied.” That warning should shape the experiment: optimize retained composite performance, not merely the smallest mass increase.

Control wetting, drying and voids during manufacture
A treated fiber can still produce a moisture-sensitive laminate if it is damp before lay-up, poorly wetted by epoxy or trapped in a void-rich region. Use a controlled, repeatable drying and storage procedure appropriate to the fiber and resin, then minimize the time that dried fiber is exposed to humid air before impregnation.
Inspect representative cross-sections for dry spots, resin-rich pockets, cracks and delaminations. Keep the fiber architecture and resin content consistent between comparison groups. Vacuum assistance, pressure and cure schedules may reduce defects, but the appropriate settings depend on the specific fiber, fabric and epoxy; there is no evidence here for one universal vacuum level, drying temperature or cure cycle.
Do not assume that a lower-viscosity resin or a more aggressive consolidation cycle is automatically better. Excessive handling can disturb alignment, while an unsuitable cure can leave residual stresses or under-cured matrix that changes later water uptake.
Use architecture and matrix selection as moisture controls
Fiber fraction and exposed surfaces
Increasing the amount of hydrophilic fiber generally increases the number of sites that can interact with water, but the relationship is not a simple universal line. Fiber packing, orientation, surface area and void content also change. Compare formulations at a known fiber fraction and report that fraction with every absorption result.

Hybridization
Hybridizing the natural fiber with a more hydrophobic reinforcement is one design lever identified in the recent review. A hybrid can reduce the proportion of moisture-sensitive reinforcement or improve dimensional stability, but it changes stiffness, strength, density, cost, sustainability and manufacturing behavior. Evaluate the complete laminate rather than judging the hybrid only by its dry tensile strength.
Matrix polarity and formulation
The matrix is another moisture-resistance variable. A less polar matrix may limit water affinity, while a particular epoxy formulation may provide better wetting or cure than another. Matrix selection must be balanced against viscosity, cure temperature, toughness, adhesion and the process used to impregnate the fiber. A matrix change is a new composite system and requires its own conditioning data.
Geometry and edge protection
Thin sections, cut edges, holes and end faces expose more fiber and interface per unit volume than a thick, sealed surface. If the part will be machined or trimmed after cure, include those finished edges in the exposure test. A coating or seal may be useful for a specific application, but its effectiveness must be measured on the actual geometry and after any expected abrasion or thermal cycling.
Match the mitigation to the exposure environment
A short immersion test answers a different question from long-term outdoor humidity exposure. Define the service environment before selecting a treatment:

- Humid air: use controlled relative humidity and temperature, and include wet–dry cycling if the part will not remain at equilibrium.
- Fresh-water contact: record water temperature, immersion duration and whether the water is renewed.
- Salt or contaminated water: test the actual medium or a justified surrogate; dissolved salts can change transport and interfacial damage.
- Temperature cycling: include the thermal range because expansion, contraction and matrix plasticization can interact with moisture.
- Fatigue service: measure fatigue retention after conditioning rather than inferring it from one tensile result.
Use the same conditioning history for every candidate. Reporting only a final mass obscures whether one material absorbs quickly and plateaus while another absorbs slowly but continues rising.
A practical validation procedure
- Define the comparison. Choose an untreated control and one treatment variable at a time where practical: for example, untreated fiber versus one alkali condition, or untreated fiber versus one silane condition.
- Make matched specimens. Keep fiber batch, fiber fraction, orientation, epoxy, cure and dimensions constant. Prepare enough replicates to show scatter rather than relying on one coupon.
- Condition and dry the starting specimens. Bring all groups to the same starting state, then measure dry mass and thickness with a documented balance and dimensional procedure.
- Expose the coupons. Record medium, temperature, humidity or immersion, duration and whether the medium is changed. Measure at multiple intervals if the goal is to understand uptake kinetics.
- Measure mass and dimensions together. Remove surface liquid consistently, weigh promptly, and measure thickness or other critical dimensions using the same locations and force.
- Calculate uptake and swelling. Water absorption can be expressed as
(m_wet − m_dry) / m_dry × 100. Report thickness swelling as the percentage change from the dry thickness. State the measurement time and conditioning protocol beside each value. - Test retained properties. After conditioning, measure the mechanical properties relevant to the part: tensile, flexural, impact, interlaminar or fatigue performance. Compare both absolute values and percentage retention.
- Inspect the failure mode. Look for fiber pull-out, interfacial debonding, matrix cracking, delamination and edge damage. A low mass gain with severe interface failure is not a successful design.
- Repeat the most promising condition. Confirm that the apparent improvement survives a second batch or a longer exposure before scaling the process.
Hamid et al. used a specific protocol in a 2019 epoxy/silica study: specimens were measured before and after 24 hours of deionized-water immersion, and water absorption and thickness swelling were calculated from the changes. That method is a useful example of paired measurements, not a prescribed long-term qualification method for natural-fiber epoxy composites.

Short, material-specific results should not be converted into a general performance promise. In the Hamid et al. study, epoxy composites containing nano-amorphous silica showed 0.08% to 0.09% water absorption, while composites containing nano-crystalline silica showed 0.08% to 0.11% under that study’s 24-hour deionized-water immersion protocol. The authors identified a 10% nano-amorphous silica concentration as giving the optimum overall properties for their epoxy/silica specimens. Those figures do not predict the absorption of a natural-fiber epoxy laminate.
A 2025 review, Effects of Moisture Absorption on the Mechanical and Fatigue Properties of Natural Fiber Composites: A Review, reports tensile-strength reductions of up to 40% and elastic-modulus reductions of 20–30% across the literature it surveyed. These are broad review-level maxima or ranges, not expected losses for every fiber, epoxy or exposure condition. The correct question for a design is how much of the relevant property your own conditioned specimens retain.

The 2026 review synthesized more than 120 peer-reviewed articles published from 2015 through 2025. Its breadth supports treating fiber chemistry, interface, hybridization and environment as connected design variables, but it does not produce one treatment concentration or cure schedule that applies to every composite.
Recognize common failure modes
| Observed problem | Likely contributors | Next diagnostic step |
|---|---|---|
| High mass gain and visible swelling | Hydrophilic fiber constituents, high fiber fraction, exposed edges or an open interface. | Compare a polished cross-section, edge-sealed specimen and untreated control; measure thickness change as well as mass. |
| Low mass gain but large strength loss | Matrix plasticization, interfacial debonding, cure damage or fiber weakening from over-treatment. | Examine fracture surfaces and test treated fibers or bundles separately from the laminate. |
| Large scatter between coupons | Variable fiber moisture, resin-rich areas, voids, orientation or inconsistent dimensions. | Audit weighing, drying, lay-up and section quality; reject comparisons with uncontrolled geometry. |
| Initial improvement that disappears at longer times | A surface treatment slows early ingress but does not prevent later diffusion, swelling or interface degradation. | Extend conditioning and report the full uptake curve rather than only the first reading. |
| Improved moisture result with unacceptable manufacturing cost or handling | Complex chemical preparation, hazardous handling, long drying or poor process reproducibility. | Include process time, chemical use, worker controls and batch-to-batch variation in the decision. |
A decision framework for selecting a mitigation
- Identify the dominant failure risk. If the part swells, prioritize dimensional data. If it loses fatigue life, prioritize conditioned fatigue testing. If defects dominate, improve impregnation before changing chemistry.
- Choose the least disruptive variable first. Standardize drying, wetting and consolidation before adding a chemical treatment; otherwise process defects can mask the treatment effect.
- Screen one surface treatment family. Select alkali, silane or acetylation based on the fiber and epoxy chemistry, then measure fiber strength and interface quality as well as water uptake.
- Compare architecture and matrix options. If the surface route is insufficient, evaluate fiber fraction, hybrid reinforcement or a different matrix formulation against the same exposure protocol.
- Rank by retained performance and practicality. A candidate should meet moisture, dimensional, mechanical, safety, cost and reproducibility requirements simultaneously.
- Verify the final manufactured part. Coupon results do not automatically represent joints, drilled holes, edges, thick sections or production-scale variability.
What cannot be specified without your material details
No evidence establishes one universally best treatment, exact chemical concentration, drying schedule or cure recipe for an unspecified natural fiber and epoxy. A defensible specification requires at least the fiber species and form, fiber fraction, epoxy and hardener, fabrication route, target dimensions, temperature and humidity range, liquid exposure and required mechanical retention.
When those details are known, publish every result with its conditioning history. “Water absorption” without temperature, medium, duration, specimen geometry and calculation method is not a transferable material property.

Reduce moisture absorption by combining compatible fiber chemistry with a sound laminate process. Screen alkali, silane and acetylation treatments carefully; prevent damp fiber and voids; consider hybrid reinforcement or matrix polarity when the application justifies the trade-offs; and validate the finished composite under its real exposure. The winning formulation is the one that limits uptake and swelling while retaining the mechanical performance and manufacturing consistency the part requires.
