On iPhone, use Low Data Mode; on Android, use Data Saver. Both restrict background activity, but neither guarantees that every mobile-data transfer will stop. Check your carrier’s billing-cycle meter as well as the phone’s counter, because the two totals may reset on different dates.
Start by finding what is using your 5G data
Do not begin by switching network modes at random. A phone can consume a large allowance through cloud photo uploads, video autoplay, app updates, social-media feeds, backups or hotspot use even when the 5G icon itself is not the problem. Diagnosis tells you which control will make a difference.

Compare the phone counter with the carrier’s billing total
Your phone’s usage screen is useful for ranking apps by consumption. Your carrier account is usually the better reference for the amount that counts toward the current bill. Compare both and check their reset dates. If the device counter started on the first of the month but the carrier cycle began on the 18th, their totals will not match until you align the periods.

- Record the carrier cycle start and end dates, or the date on which the allowance renews.
- Set the phone’s usage-cycle reset date to that same day when the operating system allows it.
- Use the carrier total for remaining allowance decisions and the phone list for identifying high-use apps.
- Remember that roaming, tethering and multi-SIM lines may be reported separately by the carrier.
Find high-use apps on iPhone
Open Settings > Cellular (called Mobile Data in some regions). Scroll through the app list to see each app’s cellular usage for the selected period. Turn off the switch beside an app if it should never use cellular data; it can still work over Wi-Fi. The same page includes System Services. iPhone shows those services for information, but does not provide a switch for individually blocking each system service.

If the iPhone total differs from the carrier’s current-period amount, contact the carrier for the most accurate billing-cycle figure. The handset counter remains valuable for relative comparisons: an app using far more than the others is the first place to investigate.
Find high-use apps on Android
On a Pixel-style Android interface, open Settings > Network & Internet > Internet > your provider settings > App data usage. You can inspect the period total and individual apps. Samsung, Motorola and other manufacturers may place the same information under Connections, SIMs, Mobile network or Data usage. If the path is different, search Settings for data usage or billing cycle.
Look for patterns rather than a single alarming number. A video app that is high only after a long commute suggests playback quality or downloads. A photo app that rises overnight suggests cloud backup. A messaging app that uses a small but continuous amount may be syncing normally, while a sudden spike can indicate media auto-downloads.
Turn on Low Data Mode on an iPhone
Apple says Low Data Mode is available with iOS 13 and later. For the cellular plan, open Settings > Mobile Data (or Cellular) > Mobile Data Options > Data Mode > Low Data Mode. Menu labels can vary by provider. With Dual SIM, choose the particular number or plan before changing its setting.
There is also a Low Data Mode setting for individual Wi-Fi networks. That is separate from the cellular control. If your goal is to reduce 5G usage, make sure you are changing the mobile-data plan rather than only the Wi-Fi network currently connected.
What iPhone Low Data Mode changes
Low Data Mode restricts network activity when apps are not actively in use. It turns off Background App Refresh, reduces streaming quality, disables automatic downloads and backups, and pauses some updates such as iCloud Photos. Apple documents several app-level effects:

These are Apple’s documented behaviors for its apps and services. Third-party apps can respond differently, so check an app’s own cellular, download and playback settings rather than assuming that Low Data Mode changes every app in the same way.

Low Data Mode is a broad control. For a narrower result, return to Settings > Cellular/Mobile Data and leave cellular access enabled only for apps that need it away from Wi-Fi. A navigation app, work authenticator or messaging service may need access while you are out. Turning cellular access off for an app prevents its mobile connection entirely; it will not receive or sync new content until Wi-Fi is available.
Use the app’s settings to reduce quality or disable automatic media downloads where available. This avoids blocking the app altogether while limiting the largest transfers.
Turn on Data Saver on Android
On Pixel-style phones, open Settings > Network & Internet > Data Saver and switch it on. Android’s consumer guidance describes Data Saver as available from Android 7.0 and later, while the platform documentation refers to Android 7.0 (API level 24) and higher. Exact labels and nesting differ by manufacturer, Android release and carrier. Search Settings for Data Saver if the path is not visible.
On a metered mobile network, Android’s Data Saver blocks background data and signals apps to use less data in the foreground where possible. It does not stop every transmission: an app in active use can still communicate, and some services may still send necessary traffic.
Keep time-sensitive apps working
To exempt an app, open Settings > Network & Internet > Data Saver > Unrestricted data and allow the app you trust to use mobile data in the background. Use this sparingly. Exempting a video, social or cloud-storage app can restore the same background consumption that Data Saver was meant to reduce.

Notifications and synchronization are the trade-off. If you disable an app’s background data rather than exempting it, that app may not notify you or sync until you open it. Motorola’s support guidance gives this warning for its phones; the practical consequence is similar on other Android devices. Keep messaging, security and other genuinely time-sensitive services unrestricted if delayed alerts would cause a problem.
Set an Android warning or limit when supported
Some Android phones can warn you at a chosen amount or stop mobile data at a limit. On the moto g55 5G, for example, the documented path is Settings > Network & internet > SIMs & mobile network > SIM > Data warning & limit. Other manufacturers use different menus. Set the usage-cycle reset date to the carrier’s renewal date before relying on the warning.
A limit is a safety net, not a substitute for diagnosis. If Android turns data off at the limit, navigation, messages, authentication and other services that depend on cellular access can fail until you restore data or reach Wi-Fi. Choose a warning below the hard limit so you have time to investigate.
Control the apps that continue using data
System data-saving modes reduce background work, but the biggest transfers often come from settings inside individual apps. Review these categories after enabling Low Data Mode or Data Saver.
Video and music streaming
Video resolution is usually the largest controllable streaming variable. In each video app, choose a mobile-data quality such as standard or data saver, disable autoplay, and reserve high-resolution downloads for Wi-Fi. Carrier guidance from CelcomDigi, updated 18 February 2025, recommends lowering video resolution and disabling automatic background activity; the exact labels and choices depend on the app.
Music apps commonly separate streaming quality from download quality. Select a lower cellular streaming quality and download albums or playlists while connected to Wi-Fi. Podcasts can also download episodes automatically, so change their cellular-download setting or use a Wi-Fi-only option.

Social feeds and short-form video
Autoplay can start video before you intentionally choose it. Turn autoplay off or select a lower-quality mobile setting in each social app. Also review automatic media downloads in chats and groups. A busy group can repeatedly download photos, videos and animated files even when you rarely open the conversation.

Photos, cloud drives and backups
Photo libraries and cloud drives can upload large files in the background. Set backups and synchronization to Wi-Fi only where the service allows it. Low Data Mode can pause iCloud updates and backups, but other cloud apps have their own controls. Check whether a “use mobile data” or “cellular uploads” switch is enabled and whether the app is allowed to run in the background.
App and operating-system updates
Automatic updates are convenient but can consume data in bursts. Keep them Wi-Fi-only when the option exists. On iPhone, Low Data Mode disables automatic App Store updates and downloads. On Android, Data Saver limits background activity, but the Play Store and manufacturer update tools may expose separate mobile-data settings.
Maps, messaging and work apps
Download offline maps over Wi-Fi if you travel through areas with weak coverage. In messaging apps, disable automatic cellular downloads for large attachments while leaving small text messages available. Collaboration, mail and calendar apps may need background access for timely alerts; reduce attachment previews or sync frequency instead of blocking them if those notifications matter.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does switching from 5G to LTE save data?
Not automatically. The amount of data is determined mainly by the content and app behavior: a high-resolution video is still a large transfer whether the radio connection is 5G or LTE. The documented settings control performance and permitted quality, not a guaranteed reduction in bytes for identical content.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesOn supported iPhone 12 and later models with a 5G plan, Settings > Mobile Data/Cellular > Mobile Data Options > Voice & Data includes 5G Auto. In that mode, iPhone uses LTE when 5G does not provide noticeably better performance and returns to 5G when it does. Selecting LTE turns 5G off. These choices can affect speed, latency, battery use and how quickly an app loads content, but the available guidance does not establish a data-saving quantity for choosing LTE.

On supported iPhones, Allow More Data on 5G permits higher-quality video and FaceTime HD. If conserving an allowance is the priority, do not select that higher-quality policy unless you accept its potential usage. The setting is a quality choice, not proof that 5G itself consumes more bytes.
iPhone and Android controls compared
| Question | iPhone | Android |
|---|---|---|
| Primary system control | Low Data Mode under the cellular plan’s Data Mode menu. | Data Saver under Network & Internet; menu names vary by manufacturer. |
| Background behavior | Restricts inactive network use, turns off Background App Refresh and pauses selected downloads, backups and updates. | Blocks background data on a metered network and asks foreground apps to use less data where possible. |
| App exceptions | Allow or block cellular access per app from Cellular/Mobile Data. | Use Data Saver’s Unrestricted data list for necessary background access. |
| Usage diagnosis | Cellular/Mobile Data page lists app usage and System Services. | App data usage lists app details; the location varies by device maker. |
| Cycle controls | Use the carrier account for the authoritative current-period amount; the device counter helps rank apps. | Many phones offer a cycle date plus warning or limit; align it with the carrier renewal date. |
| Main trade-offs | Delayed backups, lower media quality, fewer automatic downloads and less frequent updates. | Delayed notifications or sync for apps without background access, plus possible interruption at a hard limit. |
A practical 15-minute setup sequence
- Check the carrier period. Note the allowance, current total and renewal date in the carrier app or account.
- Align the phone counter. Set the device cycle reset date to the same day when the option is available.
- Identify the top three apps. Use iPhone Cellular/Mobile Data or Android App data usage and record what each app was doing.
- Enable the system saver. Turn on Low Data Mode for the cellular plan on iPhone or Data Saver on Android.
- Protect essentials. Keep only navigation, messaging, security and other time-sensitive apps available for necessary background access.
- Change media behavior. Disable video autoplay, lower cellular streaming quality and make downloads Wi-Fi-only.
- Review cloud transfers. Set photo, drive and backup uploads to Wi-Fi-only where possible.
- Configure an early warning. On Android devices that support it, set a warning below the carrier limit and verify the cycle date.
- Recheck after several days. Compare the same app list and the carrier period, looking for a new source rather than assuming the first change solved everything.
When the controls do not appear to work
The carrier total is higher than the phone total
First check the dates and whether another SIM, eSIM, roaming line or hotspot device is included in the carrier total. The carrier may also classify usage differently from the handset. Use the carrier’s figure for the allowance and ask its support team to explain an unexplained current-period difference.
An app still uses data with Data Saver or Low Data Mode enabled
Open the app while cellular service is active; foreground use is not fully blocked by either mode. Then inspect the app’s own download, autoplay, backup and quality controls. If the app must never use cellular data on iPhone, turn off its Cellular/Mobile Data permission. On Android, remove it from Unrestricted data and, if the phone offers the control, disable its background data.
Notifications arrive late
Check whether background data was disabled or the app was excluded from unrestricted access. Restore background permission for the affected messaging, authentication or work app, then reduce data use in that app’s media and sync settings instead of blocking its essential connection.
Backups or photos are stuck
Low Data Mode intentionally pauses some iCloud updates and backups. Connect to trusted Wi-Fi and allow the service time to finish. If another cloud app is affected, open its settings and check whether cellular uploads were disabled; do not assume that turning off the system saver alone will resume a paused queue.
The phone menu differs from these steps
Operating-system versions, manufacturers, carriers, regions and SIM configurations change labels and nesting. Search Settings for Data Saver, Low Data Mode, data usage or billing cycle. On iPhone, verify that you are editing the cellular plan rather than a Wi-Fi network; on Android, select the correct SIM before changing a warning or limit.
What results you should expect
These controls reduce opportunities for background transfers and high-quality media, but the documented sources do not provide a measured number of megabytes or a percentage saved. Your result depends on which apps were consuming data, how often you stream, whether backups were pending, the quality you select and which exceptions you allow.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The durable approach is a loop: measure against the carrier cycle, change the highest-use behavior, preserve access for essential apps, and check the next period. Treat 5G Auto or LTE as a performance and quality decision, not as a guaranteed data-reduction switch.
