The fastest way to shrink a Mac screen recording is to export a separate copy from QuickTime Player at a lower resolution, then choose Smaller File Size (HEVC) when everyone who receives the file and every service used to share it supports HEVC. Use Greater Compatibility (H.264) when playback on older, mixed, or unknown devices matters more. Choose 1080p when small interface text must remain readable, 720p for ordinary demonstrations, and 480p only when the smallest practical file is the priority.
Always keep the original recording. Play the exported copy at 100% magnification before sending it so you can catch blurred text, cursor artifacts, missing audio, or a codec problem while the original is still available.

Choose the right reduction before exporting
Screen recordings become smaller mainly when you reduce the number of pixels, the amount of video data encoded per second, or both. Resolution changes affect text and interface detail most visibly. Codec choice changes how efficiently those pixels are stored and whether the recipient can decode the file. For a quick native export, QuickTime Player gives you fixed resolution and codec choices. For finer control over bitrate and quality, Apple Compressor provides additional settings.

| Situation | Recommended export | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Detailed software interface, code, or small labels | 1080p; HEVC if supported, otherwise H.264 | Retains the most detail available in the documented QuickTime presets while still reducing a larger source. |
| Normal app demonstration or presentation | 720p; H.264 for broad playback or HEVC for a smaller compatible file | 1280×720 is usually enough for larger controls and headings. |
| Very small attachment or upload is the overriding concern | 480p; H.264 or HEVC according to playback support | 640×480 minimizes dimensions, but fine interface text can become difficult to read. |
| Recipients, devices, or platforms are unknown | H.264 using Greater Compatibility | H.264 is the safer interchange choice when you cannot confirm HEVC support. |
| HDR capture is unnecessary | SDR with H.264 in Screenshot on supported systems | On supported Macs running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, SDR/H.264 favors compatibility over HDR capture. |
These choices are not guarantees of a particular percentage reduction. Apple’s published documentation describes the presets and controls but does not provide one general before-and-after file-size figure for Mac screen recordings. Your recording’s duration, motion, audio, source resolution, and bitrate all affect the result.

Export a smaller copy in QuickTime Player
QuickTime’s native export is the simplest approach when you do not need to specify an exact bitrate. It creates a new file, so the original can remain untouched.
1. Open the recording
- Open the screen-recording file in QuickTime Player.
- Scrub through the recording and confirm that the picture, cursor movement, and audio are present before you create another copy.
2. Open the export controls
- Choose File > Export As from the menu bar.
- Select the output resolution that matches the material you need to show: 1080p, 720p, or 480p.
Apple documents the maximum dimensions for these choices as follows:
- 1080p: up to 1920×1080 pixels.
- 720p: up to 1280×720 pixels.
- 480p: up to 640×480 pixels.
If the original was recorded at 4K, selecting 1080p is a substantial pixel reduction while preserving a readable desktop layout. If the source was already 1080p, selecting 720p or 480p is the way to reduce dimensions further, with a corresponding loss of fine detail.
3. Select the codec when the menu is available
For 4K or 1080p exports, open the format menu and choose one of Apple’s labeled options:

- Smaller File Size: HEVC, also called H.265. Choose this when the recipients and destination service support HEVC and a smaller file is the priority.
- Greater Compatibility: H.264. Choose this when the file must play on a wider range of devices, operating systems, or services.
The format menu may not expose both codec labels for every lower-resolution path. Do not assume that a 720p or 480p export has the same codec controls as a 1080p or 4K export; use the options QuickTime actually presents.
4. Name and save the new file
- Give the export a different name or save it in a separate folder so the original is easy to identify.
- Wait for the export to finish before closing QuickTime or ejecting the storage containing the source.
- Check the resulting file’s size in Finder before uploading or attaching it.
5. Inspect before sharing
- Open the exported copy in QuickTime Player.
- View important frames at 100% scale, not only in a small preview window.
- Read the smallest text, follow the cursor, and listen for any audio that matters.
- If the result is too soft, repeat the export at the next higher resolution or use a higher-quality Compressor setting.
How resolution affects readable text
1080p for dense interfaces
Use 1080p when the recording contains code, spreadsheets, browser tabs, menus, or controls that occupy only a small part of the screen. The documented ceiling is 1920×1080. Downscaling a 4K capture to this size can reduce the file while retaining more legible detail than a 720p export. It cannot preserve every pixel from the original, so inspect the smallest labels you expect viewers to read.
720p for ordinary demonstrations
720p is limited to 1280×720. It is a practical middle ground for demonstrations centered on large buttons, a single application window, or presentation-style content. If your recording shows a full desktop with several small panes, the reduction may make those panes difficult to read. In that case, stay at 1080p and reduce the codec bitrate instead, or crop the source before recording next time.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute480p when size outranks detail
480p is limited to 640×480. It creates the smallest of QuickTime’s documented resolution presets, but it can make small interface text and thin cursor outlines hard to distinguish. Use it for content where viewers mainly need to see a broad action rather than read exact labels. Do not use it for code reviews, settings walkthroughs, or error messages unless you have confirmed that the text remains readable.

Why lowering resolution is not always the best first move
A smaller frame can remove the detail a recipient needs even when the file is still larger than desired. If 1080p text is already borderline, moving to 720p may solve the size problem by making the recording unusable. In that situation, keep 1080p and use HEVC, or move to Compressor to reduce bitrate with a controlled quality check.
HEVC versus H.264: deciding between size and compatibility
HEVC (H.265)
QuickTime labels HEVC Smaller File Size. It is the size-oriented choice when the destination and recipients support it. HEVC can store the same visual content more efficiently than H.264 in many workflows, but the actual reduction depends on the source and encoding settings. Apple does not publish a universal percentage reduction for screen recordings, so treat the label as a relative choice rather than a promised number.
Compatibility is the qualification that matters. A recipient’s player, operating system, browser, or upload service may not decode HEVC. If a viewer reports that the file will not open or play, create an H.264 copy rather than asking the viewer to change software.
H.264
QuickTime labels H.264 Greater Compatibility. Choose it for mixed-device distribution, older playback environments, or any delivery workflow whose codec support you cannot verify. H.264 may produce a larger file than HEVC at comparable visual quality, but successful playback is often more important than the last size reduction.

A practical codec rule
- Known HEVC-capable recipients and service: export HEVC first.
- Unknown or mixed playback environment: export H.264 first.
- Need both a small archive and a broadly playable copy: keep the original, make an HEVC sharing copy, and make an H.264 fallback only when needed.
Keep the two exports clearly named so you do not accidentally send the compatibility copy when the smaller HEVC file was intended, or vice versa.

On supported Macs running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Apple documents Screenshot capture options of SDR with H.264 or HDR with HEVC. This choice applies at capture time, before QuickTime export.
Choose SDR/H.264 for ordinary sharing
SDR with H.264 is the compatibility-oriented path when the recording does not need high-dynamic-range brightness or color. It avoids adding an HDR requirement to a file that may be viewed on displays or services with inconsistent HDR handling.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Choose HDR/HEVC only when HDR is part of the message
HDR with HEVC is appropriate when preserving HDR appearance is important and the intended playback chain supports it. If your demonstration is a normal application workflow, HDR usually does not add information the viewer needs; SDR/H.264 is simpler for broad distribution. Regardless of the capture mode, inspect the final export on a normal display and confirm that text and cursor contrast remain clear.
Best Value
Use Apple Compressor when QuickTime presets are not enough
QuickTime is intentionally simple. If you need to target a size limit, tune quality more carefully, or create a delivery-specific file, Apple Compressor exposes controls that QuickTime’s fixed presets do not.
Controls that matter
- Codec: select the encoding format appropriate for the destination.
- Average bitrate: reducing it generally reduces the amount of data per second, but too low a value produces visible blockiness and smeared text.
- Quality: adjust the quality target while watching detailed interface areas for artifacts.
- Keyframe interval: controls how often complete reference frames are inserted. Changing it can affect seeking and compression behavior; use a delivery preset unless you have a specific reason to tune it.
- Delivery-oriented presets: Compressor’s guide includes a Social Platforms bitrate option intended to create a smaller upload file.
A cautious Compressor workflow
- Import the original recording into Compressor.
- Choose a preset that matches the destination, then set the codec and output dimensions.
- Lower the average bitrate in a small step rather than making an extreme change immediately.
- Submit a short test section or a complete test export, depending on the controls available in your Compressor version.
- Open the result at 100% and inspect text edges, cursor movement, gradients, and any fast scrolling.
- Increase bitrate or quality if letters break up, thin lines shimmer, or motion leaves block-shaped artifacts.
- Save the accepted export as a separate file and retain the original.
There is no responsible universal bitrate setting for every Mac screen recording. A static settings window may tolerate more compression than fast scrolling through a code editor. Let the hardest-to-read scene determine the lowest acceptable setting.
Fix common sharing problems
The file is still too large
- Export a 4K source at 1080p, or a 1080p source at 720p, then check text before going lower.
- For a supported destination, switch from H.264 to HEVC using QuickTime’s Smaller File Size option.
- Use Compressor to reduce average bitrate gradually and test the most detailed scenes.
- Shorten unnecessary pauses or retakes in an editor before encoding the final copy; do not overwrite the original recording.
The recipient cannot play the file
- Confirm whether the file was exported as HEVC.
- Open the original or another copy in QuickTime Player.
- Choose File > Export As, select the needed resolution, and choose Greater Compatibility (H.264).
- Send the H.264 copy and keep the HEVC file for recipients or services that support it.
Text looks blurry
- Move from 480p to 720p or from 720p to 1080p.
- Keep the resolution and raise quality or bitrate in Compressor.
- Check the export at 100%; a small preview can make a readable file look worse than it is, while a scaled-down preview can hide artifacts.
HDR appearance is wrong
If an HDR/HEVC recording looks inconsistent on the destination, create an SDR/H.264 capture or export path for the audience that does not require HDR. Use HDR only when the viewing chain is known to support it and HDR contributes meaningfully to the demonstration.
Quick Recap
A repeatable pre-sharing checklist
- Keep the untouched original in its source resolution and codec.
- Decide whether text legibility or minimum size is the higher priority.
- Choose 1080p, 720p, or 480p using the documented maximum dimensions.
- Choose HEVC for a smaller file when support is confirmed; choose H.264 for broader compatibility.
- Use SDR/H.264 rather than HDR/HEVC when HDR is unnecessary and compatibility is the goal.
- If the QuickTime presets cannot meet the target, use Compressor’s codec, average bitrate, quality, keyframe, or Social Platforms controls.
- Open the exported copy, watch the entire recording, and inspect critical frames at 100%.
- Verify the file size and confirm that the recipient or upload service accepts the codec.
- Share the verified copy, not the original.
