You can make a tactile keyboard substantially quieter without removing its bump. First identify whether the sound comes from switch impact, a rattling large key, or resonance from the case. On a compatible hot-swap board, replacing the switches with silent tactile models is usually the most direct fix. If the board is not replaceable, a complete keyboard with factory-installed silent tactile switches and internal damping avoids modification.

“Silent” is relative: the available product information describes reduced noise, not guaranteed inaudibility in every room, desk, keycap set, or typing style. The right solution is the one that addresses your dominant noise source while preserving the force, travel, and bump you prefer.

Find out where the noise is coming from

Listen to one key at a time, then to the whole board. Different sounds point to different components, so changing switches will not necessarily cure a rattling space bar or a hollow case.

What you hear Likely source What to investigate
A sharp click or thud at the end of a press Switch bottom-out The stem striking the lower housing or a hard surface at the end of travel
A tap as the key returns Switch top-out The stem contacting the upper housing on release
Rattle on Space, Enter, Shift or Backspace Large-key stabilizer, keycap or balance bar Stabilizer lubrication, cushioning and keycap contact
Hollow, echoing or booming character across many keys Case resonance and sound transmission Foam, silicone or other internal damping layers

GATERON identifies bottom-out and top-out as two principal switch-noise sources. Its explanation is mechanical: “Bottom-out sound” occurs when the stem hits the housing at the end of the press, while “top-out sound” occurs when the returning stem taps the top housing. A tactile bump is a separate property. As GATERON puts it, “Tactile feedback tells your fingers ‘the key has actuated.’” Damping those impacts can therefore reduce sound without eliminating the tactile event.

Hot-swap mechanical keyboard with replaceable MX-style switches Install silent tactile switches Socket type, pin count and mounting must match
Non-hot-swap keyboard or no desire to open the board Buy a complete keyboard with factory-installed silent tactile switches Layout and regional availability vary
Noise mainly from Space, Enter or Shift Address stabilizers, keycap contact and balance-bar noise A switch swap may leave the main rattle unchanged
Noise is hollow or resonant everywhere Look for a board with documented foam or silicone damping One layer will not eliminate every vibration

Do not select a switch solely because a listing uses the word “silent.” Confirm that it is tactile, that its mounting matches your PCB, and that its force and travel suit your hands. Manufacturer decibel figures are not directly comparable unless the brands use the same test method.

Use silent tactile switches on a compatible hot-swap board

What silent tactile switches change

A silent tactile switch uses cushioning or other damping features to control the impact of the stem and housing while retaining a tactile event. The bump may feel softer, sharper, earlier or less pronounced than the switch it replaces; “tactile” does not describe one universal sensation. Your keycaps, plate, stabilizers and typing force also affect the final sound.

GATERON KS-6 Aliaz specifications

GATERON’s KS-6 Aliaz guide describes the switch as a 5-pin, PCB-mount, MX-style silent tactile switch. The stated specifications are:

Specification Manufacturer value How to interpret it
Pre-travel 2.0 ± 0.6 mm The point before the key reaches its actuation event; tolerance means individual switches can vary
Maximum total travel 4.0 mm The full rated downward travel, not a promise that every board feels identical
Operating-force options 60, 70, 80 or 100 gf, each ±15 gf Choose a range that fits your preferred resistance; the figure is not a complete description of tactile force
Mounting 5-pin PCB mount Your PCB and socket must accept the two electrical pins plus the three plastic locating pins
Switch style MX-style tactile The stem and housing must fit your keycaps and plate arrangement

These are product specifications, not a guarantee of how the switch will feel to a particular typist. If you want a pronounced bump or very light operation, try a sample or a small set before converting an entire board when possible.

Check compatibility before ordering

  1. Confirm that the keyboard is hot-swappable. A soldered PCB requires desoldering and soldering; a switch puller alone cannot make it replaceable.
  2. Identify the socket and mounting format. KS-6 Aliaz is 5-pin PCB mount. A board that accepts only 3-pin switches may require removing the locating pins, and doing so can affect warranty or alignment.
  3. Check MX-style support and plate clearance. The switch stem must fit your keycaps, and the plate must not interfere with the housing.
  4. Verify layout-specific keys. Standard letter keys are usually straightforward, but unusual stabilizer positions, split layouts and nonstandard sizes can need different keycaps or board-specific parts.
  5. Confirm current availability and return terms. Product versions, regional stock and compatibility notes can change.

Do not infer complete compatibility from the phrase “MX-style.” The cited KS-6 Aliaz description establishes 5-pin PCB mounting, but your keyboard still has to provide compatible sockets, plate clearance and keycap fit.

Install switches without damaging the board

  1. Unplug the keyboard and remove the keycaps from the switches you will replace. Keep the keycaps arranged so their positions are easy to restore.
  2. Use a switch puller made for hot-swap boards. Squeeze the switch-release tabs and pull vertically; do not lever against the PCB or twist the socket.
  3. Compare a replacement switch with the removed one. Align the metal pins and plastic locating pins with the socket holes before pressing.
  4. Press straight down until the switch is fully seated in the plate and PCB. If it stops partway, remove it and inspect for a bent pin rather than applying more force.
  5. Reconnect the keyboard and test every replaced key in a keyboard tester. A key that does not register commonly has a bent pin or an incompletely seated switch.
  6. Listen again at normal typing speed. If the remaining noise is concentrated on large keys or sounds hollow, investigate stabilizers and case construction instead of replacing more switches.

Opening a keyboard can affect its warranty, and a soldered board requires a different procedure. Follow the keyboard maker’s service guidance for your exact model.

Buy a complete keyboard when modification is impractical

A factory-built board can combine silent tactile switches with stabilizer treatment and internal damping that would otherwise require several separate modifications. Compare the entire construction, not only the switch name.

Fix large-key rattle separately

Space, Enter, Shift and Backspace use stabilizers or balance bars so their long keycaps move evenly. Logitech’s explanation of silent keyboard design identifies keycap geometry, damping material and balance-bar contact as additional noise sources. A key can therefore remain loud after a silent switch is installed underneath it.

Inspect the noisy key while pressing its left, center and right edges. A ticking or loose sound that changes with the point of pressure suggests stabilizer or keycap contact rather than switch impact. Some factory-built designs, including the cited Dark Mount configuration, use lubricated stabilizers and cushioning where the stabilizer meets the PCB. Those features illustrate what to look for when comparing keyboards.

There is no single foam, lubricant or O-ring modification established as a guaranteed solution for every board while preserving every switch’s feel. Stabilizer access, materials and tolerances differ. If you modify an existing keyboard, use parts intended for its construction and follow the manufacturer’s service instructions. Apply only a compatible lubricant and avoid contaminating electrical contacts.

Reduce case resonance and transmitted sound

When the whole board sounds hollow, the case may be amplifying otherwise moderate switch impacts. Manufacturers describe foam, silicone and other layers as ways to absorb or isolate vibration. The Dark Mount description combines foam and silicone with dedicated Space-bar damping; MSI describes an integrated muffler pad and multiple sound-dampening layers.

These layers do not change the tactile event itself, but they can alter the character of the sound and the perceived sharpness of bottom-out. A tightly damped case may sound deeper and less echoing, while an overly soft or poorly fitted layer can create uneven pressure, interfere with the PCB or change flex. Treat internal materials as board-specific components, not universal drop-in cures.

Compare tactile feel as carefully as loudness

Noise reduction is only useful if the keys still give you the feedback you rely on. Compare these attributes before choosing a switch or keyboard:

  • Bump shape and position: a rounded early bump feels different from a sharp event near actuation.
  • Operating force: heavier options resist accidental presses but can fatigue some typists; lighter options may feel faster but easier to trigger.
  • Pre-travel and total travel: shorter movement can feel quicker, while longer movement may provide a softer landing depending on the damping design.
  • Bottom-out behavior: silent pads can make the end of travel feel cushioned, but the result depends on the switch, plate and keycap.
  • Return feel: top-out damping affects the sound and sensation as the key rises.

Published force and travel numbers should be compared only when the manufacturers define and measure them similarly. The KS-6 Aliaz values above are specific to that model, not general specifications for all silent tactile switches.

Use a practical decision workflow

  1. Record the dominant sound. Note whether it is bottom-out, top-out, large-key rattle or a hollow resonance.
  2. Check the board’s construction. Determine whether it is hot-swappable, identify the socket and pin format, and note the layout.
  3. Set your feel target. Decide whether you want a light, medium or heavy operating force and how prominent the bump should be.
  4. Choose the intervention. Use silent tactile switches for switch-impact noise, a complete damped keyboard when replacement is impractical, and stabilizer or case work for the other noise types.
  5. Change one variable at a time. Replacing switches, keycaps and case materials simultaneously makes it difficult to know which change affected feel or sound.
  6. Test in your real environment. Type at your normal speed on the actual desk, with your usual keycaps and room conditions. “Silent” product language cannot predict every setup.

Troubleshoot after the change

A key no longer registers

Unplug the board, remove the suspect switch and inspect its pins. A bent pin is more common than a failed switch after installation. Straighten or replace the switch only if the keyboard maker permits it, then reseat it vertically.

The board is quieter, but the Space bar still rattles

Focus on the stabilizer, balance bar and keycap contact. A switch replacement addresses the switch under the key, not every moving part of a long key.

The sound is deeper but still carries across the desk

Check case resonance and the surface beneath the keyboard. Internal damping and a desk mat can change transmission, but use only materials that fit the board and do not obstruct screws, sockets or ventilation paths.

The new switches feel too heavy or too soft

Operating-force choices are personal. KS-6 Aliaz is offered in 60, 70, 80 and 100 gf options, each with a stated ±15 gf tolerance. A different force option or a small sample set may be more appropriate than modifying the damping.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the available measurements do—and do not—prove

Two numerical claims should be kept in context. GATERON lists KS-6 Aliaz pre-travel as 2.0 ± 0.6 mm, maximum total travel as 4.0 mm, and operating-force options of 60/70/80/100 gf with ±15 gf tolerance. MSI states that the STRIKE 600 V2’s Kailh Midnight Pro Silent Tactile switches are “below 35 dB.” No standardized, independent test establishes that one of these products is quieter than the other, or that either will produce the same value on your desk.

Use those numbers to check fit and select a feel, not to promise a particular reduction in your room. Product availability, layouts and specifications can change by market and over time, so confirm the current listing before purchasing.

Bottom line

Start by locating the sound. For a hot-swap board, a compatible silent tactile switch is the most direct way to reduce bottom-out and top-out noise while retaining a bump. If the noise comes from long-key rattle or a resonant case, choose a design with documented stabilizer treatment and internal damping, or service those parts according to the keyboard maker’s instructions. Compare tactile shape, force, travel, mounting and construction together, and treat every decibel statement as a product-specific claim rather than a universal guarantee.
