Reduce logging costs by measuring where volume and charges come from, then cutting or sampling only events whose diagnostic value is low. Keep security and required audit evidence, preserve structured fields and trace identifiers, and set retention and routing to match how each log category is used. Validate the policy against real incident queries before treating the savings as successful.
1. Measure volume and cost before changing the pipeline
Start with a baseline: inspect billing and ingestion or storage volume, then break it down by service, environment, severity, and log category. Look for noisy development environments, repeated success or health events, and sources whose volume is disproportionate to their incident value. Without that inventory, a broad exclusion can reduce a bill while also removing evidence you later need.
Provider guidance can help identify likely pressure points, but it is not blanket permission to disable logging. Google Cloud notes that Data Access audit logs can be large and recommends estimating costs; it gives Data Access logs in development projects as a possible exclusion when teams do not find them useful. Assess security, audit, and organizational requirements before applying any such exclusion. Google Cloud’s Cloud Audit Logs best practices provide platform-specific guidance.
2. Decide which events must be kept
Write down an event policy before filtering. Classify each category by whether it is required for security, audit, compliance, or incident response, and by how often engineers need individual records to diagnose failures. Keep high-value errors and required evidence; consider reducing repetitive, low-criticality events only after identifying what question they answer.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Keep: security and audit records required by policy, and errors or events needed to reconstruct important failures.
- Reduce or sample selectively: high-volume, repetitive events whose individual instances rarely change an operational decision.
- Enable temporarily: verbose debug output when investigating a specific issue, with an owner, activation criteria, expiry, and rollback process.
For recurring questions such as “how many requests failed?” or “what was the latency distribution?”, a metric may be more efficient than retaining every success event. Google Cloud Logging supports log-based metrics that count matching entries or extract numerical values such as latency. Keep underlying records where they are needed for investigation; a metric answers an aggregate question, not necessarily why a particular request failed. See the Cloud Logging overview.
3. Filter or sample with criticality in mind
Remove or down-rank known noise at the narrowest useful scope: a specific event, route, environment, or severity, rather than a whole service by default. If sampling is appropriate, preserve more evidence for critical paths and less for high-volume, less-critical traffic. Define how the sample is selected and ensure an error or unusual event can still be investigated.

AWS Prescriptive Guidance recommends higher trace sampling for critical paths and lower sampling for high-volume, less-critical routes in its Amazon EKS observability guidance. That is advice about tracing in an EKS context, not a universal log-sampling formula. Adapt it only after checking the failure modes and diagnostic needs of your own systems. AWS Prescriptive Guidance for Amazon EKS observability also discusses retention and compression.
4. Preserve the context that makes records useful
Lower volume does not have to mean less useful records. Emit structured logs and use stable field names so a backend can filter and interpret records consistently. As implementation guidance, useful fields often include service and environment, severity, a stable event name, timestamp, and request or trace identifiers. The right schema depends on your system; the OpenTelemetry log data model supports mapping existing formats and emitting structured logs through APIs or appenders.

Where available, include TraceId and SpanId in log records. OpenTelemetry’s specification says, “This allows to directly correlate logs and traces that correspond to the same execution context.” That correlation can turn a retained error into a path through the relevant execution rather than an isolated line. The OpenTelemetry Logging specification describes the data model and trace-context fields; its observability primer explains why logs become more useful when associated with traces or spans.
5. Set retention and routing by use and obligation
Separate data that needs fast search from records retained longer for investigation, audit, or other obligations. Route each category to a suitable destination, and check whether multiple routes create duplicate stored copies or separate query costs. Destinations may offer different trade-offs in search speed, retention, access controls, data location, and query or storage charges; compare those dimensions against your requirements rather than assuming one backend is universally cheapest.

For Google Cloud Logging specifically, the pricing documentation lists default retention of 30 days for the _Default and user-defined buckets, and 400 days for the _Required bucket. Those are Google service behaviors, not general logging defaults. Google also warns that routing copies to multiple buckets can result in multiple storage and retention charges. Its documentation describes routing to log buckets, BigQuery, Cloud Storage, and Pub/Sub. Check current pricing and your configuration before changing routes or retention. Google Cloud Observability pricing and the Cloud Logging overview explain the service details.
Do not treat operational noise and required evidence as interchangeable. In Google Cloud, audit-log handling and retention are tied to bucket behavior, including fixed handling for _Required; map your provider’s rules to your organization’s security, legal, and compliance obligations before excluding records. The Cloud Audit Logs best practices describe Google-specific considerations.

6. Verify the reduction before making it permanent
After each policy change, compare volume and cost with the baseline, then test whether the remaining data still supports diagnosis. Use a known incident or representative query, confirm that retained log records can be searched and correlated with traces, and have the relevant audit or compliance owners review the exclusions and retention rules.
- Record the original volume, charges, and main event sources.
- Change one scoped filter, sampling rule, route, or retention setting at a time.
- Compare the new usage and cost with the baseline.
- Run representative incident queries and confirm the required records and trace links are present.
- Document the policy, owner, and rollback path; revise the change if diagnostic coverage or required evidence is missing.
There is no source-backed universal savings percentage, target log volume, or ideal sampling rate. The appropriate reduction depends on what your systems emit, what your team must retain, and whether the remaining evidence answers the questions that matter during an incident.
