Reduce LLM spending by measuring the tokens that actually drive each completed task, then remove repeated work rather than useful capability. Start with usage instrumentation, make stable prompt prefixes cacheable, trim stale or irrelevant context, limit unnecessary output, consolidate tool calls, route routine work to cheaper models, and batch jobs that do not need an immediate answer. After every change, compare quality, retries, latency, and total cost per successful task—not just the price per million tokens.
Why token cost is harder than counting visible words
An AI interface can show a short answer while consuming a large amount of hidden work. The request may include system instructions, tool schemas, conversation history, retrieved documents, images converted to tokens, and internal reasoning. Billing can separate ordinary input, cached input, output, and reasoning tokens, and each category may have a different rate. A long answer is therefore not a reliable proxy for the bill.

Tokenization is model-specific: the same sentence can become a different number of tokens on different models. Billing categories and cache rules also vary by provider and model version. Before changing prompts, identify which category dominates your workload and whether the cost is generated by successful calls, retries, or abandoned attempts.

For every production request, record:
- uncached input tokens;
- cached-input tokens and cache-hit rate;
- visible output tokens;
- reasoning tokens, when the API reports them;
- number and type of tool calls;
- request latency and time to first useful output;
- timeouts, retries, and fallbacks;
- a task-success or quality score; and
- the total cost of reaching a successful result.
Endpoint usage fields and the provider Usage Dashboard are useful starting points for this instrumentation. A price-per-million comparison can mislead when one model needs more retries, more context, or more reviewer correction. Evaluate a fixed, representative task set and calculate cost per completed task.

Separate optimization goals
| Goal | Most relevant measurement | Typical first lever |
|---|---|---|
| Lower spend | Cost per successful task, split by input, cached, output, and reasoning | Cache repeated prefixes and remove needless context |
| Faster interaction | Time to first token, time to final answer, and queue delay | Reduce output and round trips; batch only work that can wait |
| Preserve answer quality | Task-success rate, factuality rubric, user corrections, and abandonment | Semantic trimming and selective model routing |
| Reduce operational waste | Retries, tool failures, and repair calls | Improve tool contracts and error recovery |
1. Cache repeated prompt prefixes first
Prompt caching is usually the safest high-impact optimization when many requests share the same beginning. Put material that changes rarely at the front of the request: system instructions, policy text, tool definitions, output schemas, and stable reference material. Put the user’s current question, recent conversation turns, and fresh retrieval results after that stable prefix.
A cache breakpoint marks the end of a prompt prefix that the service can save and reuse on later requests. The current caching guide for GPT-5.6 and later documents a 1,024-token minimum cacheable prompt length. On most of those models, a cache write is priced at 1.25 times base input and a cache read at 0.1 times base input. The first request can therefore cost more, while repeated requests can be much cheaper.
Design a cache-friendly request
- Freeze the prefix. Keep system instructions, tool declarations, schema definitions, and versioned policy text byte-for-byte identical while they remain valid.
- Version intentionally. Change the prefix when policy or tools change, rather than adding a timestamp or request ID that invalidates every cache entry.
- Move volatile material later. Append the current user message, retrieved passages, account state, and conversation tail after the stable section.
- Place the breakpoint deliberately. End the cacheable segment after the last stable block and before dynamic content.
- Monitor hit rate. A cache that rarely hits adds complexity without meaningful savings; investigate whether formatting, ordering, or short prefixes are defeating reuse.
Do not cache private data across users or sessions unless the provider’s isolation behavior and your data policy explicitly allow it. Treat a cache key or prefix version as part of your privacy and change-management design.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Compare cache economics across providers
Cache durations and prices are not universal. Documentation for one major provider describes five-minute cache writes at 1.25 times base input, one-hour writes at 2 times base input, and cache reads at 0.1 times base input. The break-even point is after roughly one or two reads, depending on the duration and the number of tokens written. Use the exact model’s current pricing and expiration rules when calculating your own break-even point.
A useful calculation is:
total cached cost = write cost + (number of reads × read cost)
Compare that with sending the same prefix uncached on every request. Include cache misses, prefix updates, and any minimum-length requirement. Caching and context trimming are compatible: trim irrelevant material first, then cache the stable remainder.

2. Trim context by meaning, not by character count
Blindly keeping only the last few messages can remove the evidence needed to answer correctly. Targeted context hygiene preserves the facts the model needs while eliminating repetition and stale state.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Remove predictable waste
- Delete duplicate instructions that appear in both system and user messages.
- Remove tool results superseded by a later result or by a state change.
- Filter retrieval results to the passages that answer the current question.
- Clean unnecessary HTML, navigation, scripts, tracking attributes, and repeated boilerplate before sending web content.
- Replace long, completed conversation branches with a compact summary that preserves decisions, constraints, identifiers, and unresolved questions.
- Do not resend full documents when a targeted excerpt or structured field is sufficient.
One provider’s cost guidance reports 21–26% additional savings from input trimming in a cited triage workload and 39% savings from pruning stale tool results on a long task. Those are workload-specific measurements, not guarantees. They illustrate why semantic pruning should be measured against answer quality rather than applied as a fixed percentage.
Use a context budget
Set budgets by component instead of one arbitrary global limit. For example, reserve space for the current request, required policy instructions, the most relevant retrieval evidence, and a short conversation summary. If a component exceeds its budget, apply a defined policy:
- rank items by relevance to the current task;
- remove duplicates and superseded states;
- summarize items that are useful but too large;
- retain citations, source identifiers, dates, and numerical qualifications;
- send the reduced context through representative quality tests.
Summarization is not automatically cheaper. It requires an extra model call and can lose details. Compare the summarizer’s cost plus the final request with the cost and error rate of sending the original context.
Preserve evidence for grounded answers
Do not remove the passage that supports a conclusion merely because it is long. Keep the minimum evidence needed to answer and cite accurately, including exceptions and dates. A smaller prompt that increases hallucinations, user corrections, or retries is not a saving.

3. Control output without making the interface feel unhelpful
Output is often the most direct latency lever. The latency guidance for a major API provider says generating tokens is almost always the highest-latency step. Cutting output by 50% can cut roughly 50% of latency in the cited guidance, whereas cutting input by 50% may improve latency only 1–5% in ordinary contexts outside massive prompts.

Match response length to the UI task
- For autocomplete, classification, routing, and extraction, request only the fields the interface uses.
- For a chat answer, ask for a concise first response with an explicit option to expand.
- For bounded transformations, set a maximum output limit and a stop condition.
- Use structured output for internal pipelines so the model does not spend tokens on decorative prose.
- Keep explanations of uncertainty, safety boundaries, and recovery actions when users need them to make a decision.
Compact field names can reduce output in internal schemas, but do not expose cryptic labels to users. A small reduction that makes the interface harder to understand can increase support requests and repeat questions.
Use progressive disclosure
Return the decision, result, or next action first. Put optional detail behind an “explain,” “show sources,” or “expand” control that triggers a second request only when needed. This avoids generating a long explanation for every user while preserving depth for people who ask for it. Track whether users actually expand the detail; otherwise the extra interaction may not be worthwhile.
4. Reduce tool calls and agent round trips
Agent workflows can spend more tokens describing tool calls than answering the user. Inspect the full trace, not only the final completion.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsConsolidate safe sequential work
If two operations always occur together and do not depend on an intermediate human decision, combine them into one tool or one model request. For example, a single retrieval operation can filter, rank, and return the fields needed for the next step. Do not combine operations when isolation, authorization, or transactional ordering would be weakened.
- Expose only the tools needed for the current task.
- Return structured, compact tool results rather than verbose prose.
- Truncate logs and payloads after retaining the fields needed for reasoning and audit.
- Use targeted edit tools for code or documents instead of resending and rewriting an entire file.
- Cache deterministic tool results when their inputs and freshness rules permit it.
Consider token-efficient tool protocols
A March 13, 2025 announcement about Claude 3.7 Sonnet reported up to 70% lower output-token consumption for tool use, with early users averaging a 14% reduction. The same announcement described a text-editor tool that targets specific document portions. These figures come from that provider’s announcement and workload, so validate them on your own traces rather than treating them as a universal rate.
Another 2025 announcement claimed up to 90% lower cost and up to 85% lower latency for long prompts after token-saving changes. Such “up to” figures describe a best-case range, not a typical guarantee. The practical lesson is to measure tool payload size, call count, and repair calls before and after a protocol change.

5. Route each task to an appropriate model and effort level
Using the strongest model for every operation is rarely cost-optimal. Use a cheaper or lower-effort model for routine classification, extraction, formatting, and straightforward retrieval. Reserve a stronger model for ambiguous requests, novel reasoning, high-impact decisions, and cases where a first-pass failure is expensive.
Build a routing policy
| Task type | Default route | Escalation signal |
|---|---|---|
| Intent classification or language detection | Small, low-effort model | Low confidence or conflicting labels |
| Fixed-field extraction | Cheaper model with schema validation | Missing fields, invalid format, or ambiguous source |
| Routine retrieval answer | Lower-cost model with filtered evidence | Insufficient evidence or citation conflict |
| Complex planning or policy interpretation | Stronger model | Human review for high-impact outcomes |
Measure the route by cost per correct completion, including escalations and reviewer time. A cheap first pass that frequently invokes an expensive repair can cost more than using the stronger model once. Keep a sample of traffic on the stronger route so quality drift is detectable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Batch work that can wait
Offline evaluations, bulk preprocessing, embedding refreshes, report generation, and background updates often do not need an interactive response. Batch APIs can trade immediacy for lower pricing and smoother capacity use.
Google’s optimization documentation describes Batch API requests at 50% of standard pricing with a target 24-hour turnaround. Anthropic also documents 50% batch savings for eligible work. These are provider- and API-specific terms; confirm eligibility, maximum batch size, completion windows, retention, and failure handling before moving production work.
Choose batch versus interactive execution
| Question | Use interactive execution when… | Use batch when… |
|---|---|---|
| Latency | The user is waiting in the current session | Results can arrive later or be polled |
| Failure recovery | You need immediate retry or fallback | Individual failures can be requeued |
| Work shape | Requests depend on live conversation state | Requests are independent and can be prepared in bulk |
| Cost priority | Responsiveness outweighs discount | A lower unit price justifies delayed completion |
Design an idempotent batch job with request identifiers, status polling, partial-failure handling, and a deadline after which the interface falls back to an interactive request.
7. Optimize the whole workflow, not one token category
Token savings can be erased by retries, tool failures, or user corrections. Build a simple cost model for each task:
Best Value
completed-task cost = all model calls + tool-related model calls + retries + escalation calls + human repair cost
Then compare optimization levers against the dimensions that matter for your product.
| Lever | Best fit | Main risk | Required check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prefix caching | High repeated-context share | Low hit rate or stale private data | Hit rate, cache cost, data isolation |
| Semantic trimming | Long histories, retrieval, or tool traces | Lost evidence or constraints | Factuality, citations, retries |
| Output limits | Bounded answers and structured tasks | Missing explanation or recovery detail | Completion rate and user follow-up |
| Tool consolidation | Many predictable round trips | Unsafe coupling or oversized responses | Authorization, failure isolation, latency |
| Smaller model or lower effort | Routine, reversible tasks | Lower accuracy and more escalation | Quality rubric and cost per success |
| Batch processing | Delay-tolerant bulk jobs | Deadline misses or partial failures | Turnaround, completion rate, requeue cost |
8. A safe implementation sequence
Make changes in an order that gives you clear attribution and protects the interface.

- Batch eligible work. Move delay-tolerant jobs to a discounted batch endpoint with idempotency and monitoring.
- Release by evidence. Compare the changed workflow with the baseline on the same task set and a live canary.
9. Quality gates and failure recovery
Set thresholds per product; there is no universal quality cutoff. At minimum, monitor task success, factuality or rubric score, user corrections, abandonment, retries, latency, and cost. Segment results by task type, language, customer tier, model route, and cache-hit status so an average does not hide a failing group.
When trimming causes errors
- Restore the removed evidence for the affected intent.
- Increase the retrieval allowance only for low-confidence cases.
- Preserve dates, units, negations, and exception clauses in summaries.
- Send the task to a stronger model when the evidence is conflicting.
When a smaller model increases total cost
- Compare the added retries and escalations with the saved first-pass tokens.
- Raise the confidence threshold for automatic acceptance.
- Restrict the cheaper route to reversible actions and simple formats.
- Keep a sampled quality-control route to detect drift.
When caching does not save money
- Check whether the stable prefix reaches the documented minimum length.
- Inspect request serialization for changing whitespace, timestamps, IDs, or tool order.
- Calculate write, read, and expiration costs using the exact model and duration.
- Remove dynamic or sensitive content from the shared prefix.
10. What not to optimize blindly
Do not delete system safeguards, citation evidence, error explanations, or user-visible uncertainty simply because they consume tokens. Do not judge a model switch by unit price alone. Do not force interactive work into a batch queue to claim a discount. Do not summarize every conversation if the summary call costs more than the saved context. And do not use a universal truncation rule across tasks with different evidence requirements.
The most reliable pattern is cumulative: cache what repeats, remove what is irrelevant, generate only what the interface uses, eliminate avoidable round trips, and reserve expensive reasoning for cases that need it. Each step should be reversible and evaluated against successful outcomes.
Conclusion: spend tokens where they change the result
Start with a trace that explains every token and every retry. Cache stable prefixes, because repeated context is the clearest opportunity for savings. Then trim context by relevance, cap unnecessary output, streamline tools, route routine work to an appropriate model, and batch jobs that can wait. The correct target is not the fewest tokens; it is the lowest cost and latency for a successful, trustworthy interaction.
