How to Reduce Latency and Interruptions in Real-Time Speech-to-Speech AI

The fastest path to a natural voice agent is a streaming speech-to-speech connection, WebRTC for browser and mobile clients, deliberately short audio buffers, environment-specific voice-activity detection (VAD), and explicit barge-in handling. Measure the complete path from the end of the user’s speech to the first response audio, the time required to stop when the user interrupts, and whether the task succeeds—not just the speed of an individual model.

What “low latency” means in a voice conversation

Voice AI only feels natural if conversation moves at the speed of speech, as OpenAI technical staff Yi Zhang and William McDonald wrote in 2026. A voice system can have a fast model and still feel slow if audio waits in a capture buffer, a WebSocket takes too long to connect, a jitter buffer is oversized, or the player continues speaking after the user has started.

Use three user-visible measurements as your primary scorecard:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • End-of-user-speech to first-audio latency: the elapsed time between the point at which the system decides the user’s turn ended and the first usable assistant audio reaches the playback sink.
  • Interruption-stop latency: the time from detected user speech during assistant playback to the moment no further assistant audio is audible.
  • Task success: whether the agent completed the requested action correctly. A faster but less accurate answer is not an improvement.

Record the transport conditions alongside those measurements: media round-trip time (RTT), jitter, packet loss, connection-setup time, VAD false triggers, and the model’s reasoning depth. There is no universal “acceptable” latency number that applies to every device, language, network, or task. Establish a baseline for your own users and compare every change with the same scenarios.

Choose a path that does not add avoidable hops

Use direct speech-to-speech when the task allows it

A conventional voice bot records speech, sends it to speech recognition, passes text to a language model, then sends the answer to speech synthesis. Each boundary can add queuing, serialization, network travel, and another decoder startup. A direct speech-to-speech conversation removes the intermediate STT/TTS hop and is designed for lower latency. It is the sensible default when you do not need an independently reviewed transcript, a separate speech model, or a text-only processing stage.

Keep a separate STT→LLM→TTS pipeline when you require a particular recognizer or voice, strict text moderation before synthesis, deterministic transcript processing, or a downstream system that only accepts text. In that case, stream every stage rather than waiting for a complete recording, transcript, or answer.

Prefer WebRTC for interactive browser and mobile media

For browser and mobile clients, OpenAI’s WebRTC documentation recommends WebRTC rather than WebSockets for more consistent real-time performance. WebRTC is designed for continuous, bidirectional media and includes mechanisms for adapting to changing network conditions. OpenAI also describes startup optimizations such as WARP that target connection-setup time.

WebSockets remain useful for server-to-server integrations, controlled environments, or applications where your own media gateway already terminates the connection. They do not automatically make a voice agent slow; the risk is that you end up implementing media pacing, buffering, loss recovery, and interruption behavior yourself. Choose based on the whole path, not on a transport label.

Operational focus Geographic placement, ICE/TURN routing, RTT, jitter, and packet loss Socket location, proxy behavior, frame queues, RTT, and packet loss

Keep the media path geographically close to the user. A well-tuned model cannot compensate for a distant first hop or a congested relay. OpenAI’s engineering discussion of voice infrastructure identifies stable media RTT, low jitter, low packet loss, fast connection setup, and good first-hop routing as foundations of natural turn taking. The service has to operate at very large scale—OpenAI reported more than 900 million weekly active users in 2026—so regional capacity and routing are practical concerns, not theoretical ones.

Build the streaming path in the right order

  1. Capture continuously. Open the microphone and send small, regular audio frames while the user is speaking. Do not wait for a complete recording before transmission. Keep sample format, channel count, and clock handling consistent from capture through playback.
  2. Connect before the user needs to talk. Establish signaling, authentication, and the media session when the conversation screen opens or as early as policy permits. Track connection-setup time as a separate metric so it is not hidden inside response latency.
  3. Run VAD on the live stream. VAD should detect speech starts and ends while audio is flowing. Configure it for the user’s microphone and room rather than copying one threshold to every deployment.
  4. Send incremental input. Forward audio as it arrives and allow the service to process a turn while the user is finishing. Avoid a client-side “record, then upload” state unless the product explicitly requires push-to-talk.
  5. Start output as soon as it is usable. Play the first valid response audio chunk immediately. Do not wait for the complete sentence or answer to be generated.
  6. Keep playback buffering minimal. Use only enough queued audio to absorb normal network variation. Every additional buffered millisecond increases the delay the user hears and the amount that must be discarded during barge-in.
  7. Keep a single source of truth for turn state. Track whether the system is idle, listening, generating, playing, or cancelling. Race conditions between VAD events, response events, and the audio player are a common cause of talking over the user.
  8. Measure the full path. Timestamp capture, speech-start and speech-end detection, response creation, first received audio, first played audio, interruption detection, playback stop, and task completion. Correlate those events with a session identifier.

Tune VAD as a latency control, not a cosmetic setting

VAD determines when a turn begins and ends, so it directly controls perceived response time. Three settings deserve deliberate treatment:

  • threshold: the activation sensitivity. A lower value can detect quiet speech but is more vulnerable to fans, keyboard noise, and room echo; a higher value rejects noise but may miss soft or distant speech.
  • prefix_padding_ms: audio retained immediately before the speech detector fires. This protects the first phoneme when the detector reacts slightly late. Too little padding clips words; too much sends unnecessary background audio.
  • silence_duration_ms: the quiet interval required to end a turn. A shorter interval produces an answer sooner but can interpret a brief thinking pause as the end of the user’s turn. A longer interval supports hesitant or conversational speech but makes every response feel later.

Calibrate these values with representative recordings: quiet rooms, open offices, cars, speakers with echo, different microphones, accents, short confirmations, and users who pause between clauses. Compare VAD false-trigger rate and missed-turn rate with end-of-speech-to-first-audio latency. Do not optimize the latter by making the detector cut off natural pauses.

Implement barge-in so the assistant really stops

Barge-in is more than detecting a new voice. A reliable implementation must cancel generation, stop audible playback, remove audio that has not reached the user, and correct the conversation state.

  1. Detect user speech while playback is active. Use the same live VAD path, with echo cancellation and microphone routing configured so the assistant’s own speaker output is not mistaken for user speech.
  2. Stop the local sink immediately. Pause or stop the audio element, media source, or native playback object as soon as speech is confirmed. Do not wait for a server acknowledgement before silencing the user’s device.
  3. Cancel the active response. Send the response-cancellation operation supported by your real-time session. This prevents additional output from being generated after the interruption.
  4. Clear every queued layer. Empty client playback queues, decoded-but-not-played frames, and any server-side or gateway audio buffer. Clearing only the HTML audio element can leave already queued chunks playing.
  5. Truncate to what the user actually heard. Retain only the portion of assistant audio that reached the playback sink. Audio received but still buffered must not remain in the conversation as if it had been heard.
  6. Begin the new turn cleanly. Continue streaming the user’s audio and create the next response only after the new turn meets your VAD or push-to-talk rule. Guard against a stale cancellation event resetting the state of the new response.

The truncation step matters for more than bookkeeping. If unplayed words remain in the conversation history, the next model turn can assume the user heard information that was never audible, producing confusing references and duplicated answers.

A practical interruption state machine

State Allowed event Required action
Listening Speech end Finalize the turn and request a response, unless a validation gate is enabled
Generating User speech start Cancel generation and mark the response as interrupted
Playing User speech start Stop the sink first, cancel the response, clear queues, then truncate unplayed audio
Cancelling New speech frames Keep capturing the new turn; ignore late chunks belonging to the cancelled response
Any active state Connection loss Stop playback, preserve only confirmed conversation state, reconnect, and tell the user if recovery requires a retry

Use moderation and retrieval gates without making every turn slow

Some applications must validate a request, run moderation, or retrieve account data before allowing the model to speak. Keep VAD active so the user’s turn is detected promptly, but disable automatic response creation for that session. After the checks finish, issue response.create explicitly. This adds the time required for the gate, but it prevents an answer from starting before the required control has completed.

Make the gate asynchronous where possible. Start safe retrieval or validation work as soon as the relevant part of the user’s turn is available, and avoid serializing independent checks. If a check cannot complete within the product’s response budget, return a short spoken status rather than leaving the user in silence.

Control buffering and first-audio delivery

Buffering is a trade-off: more queued audio masks jitter and packet loss, while less buffering reduces perceived delay and makes interruption precise. Start with the smallest buffer that remains stable on your slowest representative network. Increase it only when packet loss or jitter causes audible gaps, and record the latency cost of that change.

Separate these buffers in telemetry:

  • microphone capture buffer;
  • network receive and jitter buffer;
  • decoded audio queue;
  • audio-device or operating-system output buffer.

Without this breakdown, a client may appear to have a model-latency problem when the delay is actually in a player queue. Play the first usable response chunk as soon as decoding permits, and keep subsequent chunks flowing continuously. If a decoder requires larger frames, measure the added startup time rather than assuming the trade-off is free.

Choose reasoning depth as a quality budget

More model reasoning can improve difficult-task quality, but it generally increases response time. Select the shallowest reasoning setting that meets the task’s quality bar, then validate the choice with spoken response time and task success. A customer-service greeting, a short routing decision, and a multi-step troubleshooting conversation should not necessarily share one reasoning budget.

Evaluate reasoning changes against the same prompts and audio conditions. If deeper reasoning improves completion but causes users to interrupt frequently, consider a two-stage interaction: give a brief acknowledgement quickly, then deliver the substantive result when ready. Do not use an acknowledgement to hide a broken transport or an overlong VAD silence window.

Instrument every source of delay

Create one trace per conversation turn and record monotonic timestamps. At minimum, include:

  • session creation and media connection completion;
  • microphone capture start, speech-start detection, and speech-end detection;
  • response request and first server audio received;
  • first audio played and playback queue depth over time;
  • user speech detected during playback, cancellation sent, sink stopped, and truncation completed;
  • media RTT, jitter, packet loss, route or relay region, device class, and network type;
  • VAD false starts, missed starts, premature turn ends, and task outcome.

Report distributions, not only averages. A p95 or p99 spike can dominate the experience even when the mean looks good. Break results down by browser, operating system, microphone, geography, relay path, acoustic environment, and task type. Compare a change only after running the same scenario set across those groups.

Symptom Likely cause What to inspect first
The reply starts late although the model is fast Long silence window, connection setup, or client buffering Speech-end timestamp, setup trace, and each buffer’s queue depth
The assistant cuts users off Silence window too short, threshold too sensitive, or insufficient prefix padding VAD events against the waveform and room-noise samples
The assistant talks over the user Playback is not stopped locally or echo is triggering VAD late Interruption-stop trace, echo-cancellation status, and sink state
Old words appear after an interruption Queued audio was not cleared or unplayed output was not truncated Client queue, gateway buffer, and conversation audio history
Speech is choppy on mobile networks Packet loss, jitter, or an overly small buffer RTT, jitter, loss, relay route, and buffer underrun count
Performance varies sharply by location Distant first hop, relay placement, or regional capacity Route, region, setup time, and media RTT by geography
Fast replies are less useful Reasoning depth was reduced below the task’s quality requirement Task-success rate and error categories, not latency alone

A rollout checklist for a real-time voice agent

  • Use a direct streaming speech-to-speech path unless a separate STT/TTS chain is required.
  • Use WebRTC for browser and mobile media when it fits your deployment; keep server-side alternatives measured rather than assumed.
  • Place media termination and relays near users, and watch RTT, jitter, loss, and setup time.
  • Stream microphone input continuously and stream the first response audio as soon as it is usable.
  • Tune threshold, prefix_padding_ms, and silence_duration_ms for each meaningful acoustic environment.
  • On barge-in, stop playback immediately, cancel the response, clear every queue, and truncate audio the user did not hear.
  • Disable automatic response creation when moderation, validation, or retrieval must happen first; issue response.create after the gate.
  • Keep playback buffering as small as network stability permits.
  • Choose model reasoning depth from measured task quality and spoken response time.
  • Test representative devices, networks, rooms, accents, pauses, interruptions, and failure recovery paths.
  • Review p95 or p99 latency, interruption-stop time, VAD errors, and task success before shipping a change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I switch from WebSockets to WebRTC to fix every latency problem?

No. WebRTC is the recommended starting point for browser and mobile media because it gives more consistent real-time behavior, but a distant relay, oversized buffer, poor VAD settings, or slow model response can remain the real bottleneck. Measure each segment before changing transport.

What should happen if a user interrupts while the assistant is generating but has not played audio?

Cancel the active response, discard all generated-but-unplayed audio, keep capturing the user’s new turn, and ensure late events from the cancelled response cannot alter the new turn’s state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I make a voice agent respond faster without making it interrupt users?

Reduce avoidable setup and buffering delay first, then tune the end-of-turn silence window with representative speech recordings. Do not shorten the window without checking premature turn endings and task success.
