These settings can reduce power demand and, in some cases, fan activity. They cannot fix blocked vents, failed cooling hardware, or every cause of overheating.
Why power settings can affect fan noise
A laptop fan speeds up to remove heat. More demanding work, charging, warm surroundings, or background activity can increase heat and cooling needs. A less aggressive power mode may reduce energy use, but the result depends on the computer, its operating system, and what you are doing. There is no universal temperature or decibel reduction to expect from changing one setting.

Microsoft’s Windows thermal-management guidance describes the tradeoff: components use power and generate heat, and thermal management aims to prevent overheating without needlessly harming the user experience. Do not disable cooling protections or blindly change hidden processor settings.
Change power mode in Windows
Windows 11: choose a less aggressive mode
- Open Start > Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Under Power mode, select Best power efficiency to prioritize lower energy use, or Balanced for a less restrictive everyday profile.
- If the control offers separate choices for plugged-in and battery use, set each according to how you use the laptop. You may prefer a quieter, more efficient mode on battery and a more responsive mode when plugged in.
Microsoft says Best power efficiency reduces power use and limits background activity. The available choices can vary by hardware, manufacturer, or power plan, and a manufacturer’s control utility may affect what appears.

If Windows will not let you change the mode
A custom power plan may be selected. Microsoft suggests opening Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options and choosing Balanced. The available plans still depend on the device.
Other Windows settings that reduce energy use
- Energy saver: Windows 11 can dim the screen and limit background processes when battery charge is low. This is an energy-saving feature, not a direct fan control.
- Screen and sleep timers: Shorter timers reduce power use while the laptop is idle; they do not control the fan directly.
- Dynamic refresh rate: On supported systems, this can save display power. Do not assume that any one of these settings will produce a particular fan-speed or temperature change.
Windows 10 power modes are available only on supported devices, and manufacturer or hardware differences affect the choices. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; it no longer receives standard free security updates.

Change power mode on a Mac
macOS Ventura or later
- Open the Apple menu > System Settings > Battery.
- Choose Low Power, Automatic, or High Power for battery or power-adapter use, where those options are available.
Apple says Low Power Mode reduces energy use. On macOS Sequoia 15.1 or later, it can also help reduce fan noise during quieter tasks on supported Macs with active cooling. High Power Mode raises available fan speed and may create additional noise while supporting intensive workloads. The options depend on the Mac model and macOS version.

macOS Monterey or earlier
Use Apple menu > System Preferences > Battery. Mode names and availability vary by Mac and software version, so do not assume every model offers the same choices.

Check for demanding apps and background work
On Surface devices, Microsoft recommends sorting Task Manager by CPU use and closing applications that are using a lot of processing power unnecessarily. The same check can help identify a busy process on other Windows laptops, though device-specific fan behavior varies. Setup activity can also make Surface fans run faster during the first 24 hours.
Consider charging and room temperature
Charging can require additional cooling. Microsoft says Surface fans may run more often or faster in environments warmer than 25°C / 77°F. That figure is Surface-specific guidance, not a universal temperature threshold for laptops.

Match the mode to the task
For light browsing, documents, and similar work, a more efficient mode is a reasonable first choice. For sustained demanding tasks, such as workloads that need high performance, a more powerful mode may be useful; greater power use and cooling activity can be expected. On Surface devices, Microsoft says Recommended helps limit fan speed, while Better performance or Best performance can make the device warmer and the fan spin faster. That Surface guidance should not be treated as a guarantee for other laptop brands.
Check ventilation and know when settings are not enough
Power settings will not clear dust or hair from vents, repair a fan, or resolve every thermal problem. Keep vents unobstructed and follow the laptop maker’s maintenance directions. MSI advises shutting down the laptop before cleaning, keeping distance from exhaust vents, and using compressed-air cans or blowers to remove dust or hair. Its guidance is for MSI laptops; follow your own manufacturer’s instructions rather than transferring brand-specific procedures or utilities to another device.

For an MSI laptop, the manufacturer also lists reviewing resource-heavy apps, checking ventilation, updating BIOS and Windows packages, and using MSI’s own utility for MSI-specific controls as troubleshooting steps. Do not install or apply another manufacturer’s fan profiles or controls to your laptop without device-specific guidance.
Contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider if the laptop continues to overheat, repeatedly restarts or shuts down, loses performance, or makes abnormal mechanical sounds. Microsoft identifies grinding, whining, or ticking as abnormal fan sounds on Surface devices. Persistent symptoms or unusual noises can indicate a problem that a power-mode change cannot address.
