The fastest way to reduce GeForce NOW lag is to identify whether the problem is network delay, packet loss, local-device overload, input polling or the game itself. Start with GeForce NOW’s built-in network test—not a generic speed-test website—then use the Session Report to target the lowest-scoring component. After that, test Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi, remove competing traffic, keep the server location on Auto, and apply device-specific fixes.
GeForce NOW renders a game on a remote NVIDIA server and streams the video and audio to your device. That means a high internet-speed result alone does not prove that the route to NVIDIA’s data center is stable. The steps below separate delayed controls from jerky video, cracking audio and uneven game performance so you can fix the relevant cause instead of buying hardware blindly.

Jerky, blurry or frozen video
Uneven frames, sudden resolution drops and brief freezes usually indicate packet loss, high jitter, Wi-Fi interference, congestion or a device that cannot decode the stream smoothly.
Cracking or cutting-out audio
Audio artifacts often accompany packet delivery problems or local resource pressure. Run the network test and Session Report while the symptom is occurring rather than relying on how fast another website loads.
An uneven game despite a smooth stream
If the stream looks stable but the game itself feels inconsistent, the game-performance component or the remote game session may be responsible. Session Report helps distinguish that situation from a weak connection.

Use this diagnostic sequence
- Describe the symptom. Note whether the complaint is input delay, video stutter, audio cracking or uneven in-game performance. Record the time and game, especially if the problem is intermittent.
- Run GeForce NOW’s network test. On Windows PC or macOS, open the app menu, choose Settings, leave Server Location set to Auto, and select TEST NETWORK. Android and SHIELD devices provide a Test network option in their settings. iPhone and iPad apps do not currently include an in-app tester; NVIDIA recommends running the test from a PC, Mac or Android device on the same network. See NVIDIA’s current instructions at How do I test my network for GeForce NOW?
- Change the connection before buying equipment. Test a direct Ethernet connection. If you must use Wi-Fi, move close to the router, select 5 GHz, try a less congested channel and pause heavy downloads, uploads and video streams.
- Check route and timing factors. Temporarily disable a VPN, keep the server on Auto and test at both busy and quiet hours. If your router has a QoS feature, test GeForce NOW with QoS disabled; NVIDIA notes that QoS can hurt performance on some routers, not all.
- Open Session Report. On Windows PC, macOS and a browser, use Help > Session report to open the latest report. Compare the scores for device, upload, download, packet delivery and game.
- Apply the lowest component’s fix. A low device score calls for lower stream settings, closing other applications or restarting. A packet-delivery problem calls for connection and router troubleshooting. A game score points toward the individual game or session.
- Test input and display settings. For mouse-only stutter, try a 125 Hz polling rate. On SHIELD connected to a television, enable the television’s Game Mode and check its manufacturer instructions.
- Escalate with evidence. If the issue remains, send NVIDIA Customer Care your platform, occurrence times, network-test results and Session Report, when available. GeForce NOW also offers in-app issue reporting.
Run the GeForce NOW network test, not just a speed test
NVIDIA says its test differs from Speedtest and other generic internet tests because it evaluates the route used to reach GeForce NOW’s data center. A speed test can contact a nearby server while your path to NVIDIA is suffering from a poor peering route, packet loss or queueing.
The test reports four measurements:
| Measurement | What it represents | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Bandwidth | Available throughput for the stream | Enough capacity for the chosen resolution and frame rate |
| Packet loss | Data that fails to arrive | NVIDIA describes a good network as having no packet loss |
| Jitter | Variation in packet arrival timing | Low jitter; high jitter can produce uneven delivery |
| Ping | Round-trip network delay | Lower is better; NVIDIA requires less than 80 ms to an NVIDIA data center |
Run the test several times if results change. A single pass can miss interference or a short congestion burst. Keep the result from a problem period so you can compare it with a normal session and provide useful evidence to support.
Connection changes that usually help
Prefer Ethernet
NVIDIA recommends a hardwired Ethernet connection because it removes radio interference, Wi-Fi channel contention and many brief wireless interruptions. Connect the gaming device directly to the router or an Ethernet switch, then repeat the built-in test. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable is a practical shopping category if you need a cable; NVIDIA does not state that Cat 6 is uniquely required.

Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi when Ethernet is impractical
Choose the router’s 5 GHz network rather than 2.4 GHz when your device supports it. 5 GHz can provide a cleaner, faster local link, although walls and distance reduce its range. Place the device in the same room as the router when possible. If the router combines bands under one network name, temporarily selecting the 5 GHz band can make troubleshooting easier.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Reduce interference and channel contention
Nearby networks, cordless devices and household electronics can make Wi-Fi delivery uneven. A Wi-Fi analyzer can reveal crowded channels; select a less congested channel using your router’s controls. Test again after changing one setting so you know which change mattered.
Stop competing traffic
Pause game downloads, cloud backups, large file transfers, live video streams and uploads on every device sharing the connection. Upload saturation is particularly disruptive because queues can delay the small packets carrying game input and acknowledgements even when a download speed test looks excellent.
Reboot and update the router
Install current router firmware and reboot the router when appropriate. This can clear a faulted radio or an overloaded queue, but it cannot repair an ISP route that is congested upstream. Retest after the restart rather than assuming the result.
Test without a VPN
A VPN adds another route and encryption hop. NVIDIA warns that it can increase latency, cause stutter or send a session toward an unsuitable data center. Disconnect it temporarily as a diagnostic step. If the problem disappears, compare the VPN-off result before deciding whether the VPN is usable for GeForce NOW.

Leave Server Location on Auto while diagnosing
Auto is intended to select the closest or best available data center. Manually forcing a distant location can add round-trip delay and make a healthy local connection appear defective. Change this setting only as a controlled test after recording the Auto result.

Check for time-of-day congestion
Run the network test and a short session at peak streaming hours and again at a quiet time. If packet loss or jitter appears only in the evening, congestion somewhere between your home and NVIDIA may be involved. That pattern does not, by itself, prove that your ISP is responsible; save the timestamps and measurements before contacting the provider.
Test router QoS carefully
Quality-of-service settings are not universally beneficial. NVIDIA reports that QoS can negatively affect GeForce NOW on some routers. If QoS is enabled, repeat the same game and network test with it off, then keep the setting that produces the more stable packet-delivery result.
Match bandwidth to the stream you select
NVIDIA publishes platform-specific requirements rather than one universal bandwidth number. The following figures are current examples for a Windows PC; they are requirements guidance, not a guarantee of performance in every household.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Windows PC stream target | Bandwidth listed by NVIDIA |
|---|---|
| 720p at up to 60 FPS | 15 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 FPS | 25 Mbps |
| QHD at 120 FPS | 35 Mbps |
| 4K at 120 FPS | 45 Mbps |
| QHD/FHD at 240 or 360 FPS | 55 Mbps |
| 5K at 120 FPS | 65 Mbps |
Other device categories have their own targets, and membership tiers or feature availability can differ by platform. Check the current GeForce NOW system requirements for your device. Meeting a bandwidth figure does not compensate for packet loss, high jitter or latency above NVIDIA’s stated limit of less than 80 ms to an NVIDIA data center.
Read Session Report to find the bottleneck
Session Report scores five areas on a 0–100 scale, with higher scores indicating a better result. The scale is a diagnostic display, not a population statistic or a promise that a particular score guarantees smooth play.
Your Device
A low device score suggests local decoding, CPU/GPU load or competing applications. Lower the streaming resolution or frame rate, close other applications and restart the device or app as NVIDIA suggests. Recheck the report after each change.

Upload and Download
These scores show whether available throughput is adequate in each direction. Stop background transfers and repeat the session. A low download score can limit video quality; a low upload score can delay input and control traffic.

This component reflects whether packets arrive consistently. Congestion, household queueing, Wi-Fi interference and possible ISP throttling can all affect it. Ethernet, 5 GHz placement, a cleaner channel and testing at another time are more relevant than simply paying for a faster plan.
Game
A low game score with healthy network and device scores points toward game-side performance or the particular remote session. Try another title briefly. If only one game behaves poorly, record that distinction for NVIDIA support rather than changing every network setting.

Mouse stutter with an otherwise smooth stream
If video and audio are stable but mouse movement skips, lower the existing mouse’s polling rate to 125 Hz and test again. NVIDIA specifically recommends this input-focused step. It does not fix packet loss, Wi-Fi interference or general video stutter, and buying a new mouse should come after testing the setting on the one you own.
Television processing on SHIELD
When SHIELD is connected to a TV, image-processing modes can add visible control delay even when the network is healthy. Enable the TV’s Game Mode and follow the television maker’s instructions. TV menus and behavior vary, so treat this as a display-latency test rather than a universal SHIELD setting.

Mac wireless behavior
NVIDIA’s current troubleshooting guidance includes Mac-specific checks involving AWDL, AirDrop-related activity and location services. If a Mac shows intermittent stream problems while other devices on the same network are stable, follow the steps in the official lag and streaming-quality guide rather than applying unrelated system-cleaning utilities.
iPhone and iPad
Because iOS and iPadOS currently lack an in-app GeForce NOW network tester, run the test from a PC, Mac or Android device connected to the same home network. Then compare the mobile session with an Ethernet or 5 GHz test where possible.
Should you replace the router or buy accessories?
Make the purchase conditional on the diagnosis.
- Ethernet cable: sensible when the gaming device can be wired and Wi-Fi testing shows interference or unstable packet delivery. Cat 6 is a practical category, not a stated GeForce NOW requirement.
- 5 GHz router: relevant only if the current router lacks 5 GHz, has poor coverage or cannot maintain a stable local link. NVIDIA publishes a recommended routers and controllers list, but a replacement is not automatically required for every lag complaint.
- Adjustable-polling-rate mouse: relevant only when mouse input is the symptom. Try 125 Hz on the current mouse first.
Do not buy a generic “optimizer” to solve a problem that Session Report attributes to packet delivery, a remote route or the game itself. Existing equipment and controlled tests often identify the cause at no cost.
When to contact NVIDIA or your ISP
Contact NVIDIA Customer Care when the same symptom persists after a controlled Ethernet or 5 GHz test, VPN-off test and Session Report review. Include the platform, app or browser, game, data center setting, exact occurrence times, network-test values and the latest Session Report. NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW FAQ provides the current support path and service information.
Contact your ISP when the problem is time-dependent across multiple devices, the route shows recurring packet loss or jitter, or ordinary internet use also degrades at the same times. Provide timestamps and measurements rather than only reporting that a speed test was fast.
A practical order of operations
For most households, the efficient order is: run the GeForce NOW test, record packet loss, jitter, ping and bandwidth, switch to Ethernet or 5 GHz, stop competing traffic, test without a VPN, compare peak and off-peak times, inspect Session Report, then apply the device or input fix named by the lowest score. This sequence isolates the fault before you spend money or change several variables at once.
