Reduce Kerberos ticket abuse in stages: inventory service principal names (SPNs), service accounts, encryption dependencies and delegation; audit ticket activity; move compatible systems from RC4 to AES; then apply targeted controls such as Protected Users, authentication policies and delegation restrictions. Validate each change against real applications because restrictive settings can deny legitimate authentication.
Kerberoasting and forged-ticket attacks are different problems. AES migration reduces exposure associated with RC4 service tickets, while account restrictions, least privilege, delegation controls and domain-controller monitoring address other ways attackers can obtain or use Kerberos credentials.

What Kerberos ticket abuse includes
Kerberoasting targets service tickets
Kerberoasting starts with accounts that have service principal names (SPNs). An attacker requests Kerberos service tickets for those SPNs, captures the ticket material and attempts to crack it offline. The risk is highest when the SPN belongs to a highly privileged account or when its password is weak, old or shared across systems.

Using AES rather than RC4 makes captured material harder to attack with the methods associated with RC4. It is a meaningful hardening step, not a guarantee that every Kerberoasting path disappears. Attackers can still target weak account passwords, excessive privileges, exposed credentials or other authentication weaknesses.

Golden Ticket abuse is different
A Golden Ticket is a forged Kerberos ticket-granting ticket (TGT), generally associated with compromise of the domain’s KRBTGT secret. It is not the same as requesting a legitimate service ticket and cracking it offline. RC4 restrictions and Protected Users can reduce several avenues for credential abuse, but they do not by themselves remediate a compromised KRBTGT secret. Recovery from suspected Golden Ticket compromise requires current Microsoft incident-response guidance; do not treat a detection alert as a complete recovery procedure.
Start with an inventory and a baseline
Do not begin by disabling an encryption type or adding large groups of users to a restrictive security group. First map dependencies so that a failed authentication can be tied to a specific account, device or application.
Inventory SPNs and service identities
- List user, computer and managed service accounts that have SPNs.
- Record each account’s owner, application, host systems, privileged-group memberships, password-management method and logon scope.
- Identify accounts whose passwords never expire, are shared by several services or have not been rotated after an application change.
- Review unconstrained, constrained and resource-based delegation settings, noting which business function requires each one.
- Identify accounts and devices that support only legacy Kerberos encryption types.
Microsoft Defender for Identity can help discover service-account candidates, including accounts with SPNs and a password-never-expires attribute. Treat its classifications as leads to verify against your naming conventions and operational ownership, not as an automatic authorization to disable an account.

Compare SPN-bearing accounts with membership in domain, enterprise and other high-impact administrative groups. Remove unnecessary privilege only after confirming the account’s actual service dependencies. A service account that needs to read a database does not automatically need interactive logon rights or domain-administrator membership.
Enable domain-controller auditing
Review Kerberos auditing on every domain controller. Security event ID 4768 records a TGT request, while event ID 4769 records a service-ticket request. Capture the account, source computer, target service, timestamp and encryption type so that later investigations can distinguish normal application behavior from unusual requests.
Ticket events can be numerous on a busy key distribution center (KDC). Size retention, forwarding, indexing and alert rules before enabling broad collection. A short retention window or an alert rule that ignores high-volume services can hide the baseline you need during an encryption migration.

Move from RC4 to AES deliberately
Understand the Microsoft transition
Microsoft states that updates released on or after November 8, 2022 changed Kerberos’s default encryption type to AES-SHA1 for accounts without an explicitly configured type. RC4 can still be used by accounts or devices that lack AES support or that have an explicit legacy configuration.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallMicrosoft’s guidance describes an audit-first rollout followed by limiting or disabling RC4 through Group Policy or a domain-controller registry value. The exact setting and registry behavior should be checked against the Windows Server versions in your fleet before production deployment.
Use the supported Group Policy setting
- In Group Policy Management Editor, locate Network security: Configure encryption types allowed for Kerberos.
- For systems that have completed compatibility testing, select the AES-SHA1 options Microsoft identifies: AES128_HMAC_SHA1 and AES256_HMAC_SHA1.
- Apply the policy to an appropriate test OU or security-filtered group rather than the whole domain.
- Restart target devices as directed by the policy and operating-system guidance.
- Review authentication events and application logs for failed TGT or service-ticket requests.
- Expand the scope only after legacy devices, appliances, trusts and line-of-business applications have passed the same tests.
Keep an exception register for systems that still require RC4. Each exception should have an owner, a documented dependency, a compensating control and a removal date. An exception without ownership tends to become permanent.
Account for Windows Server versions and dates
Microsoft states that Windows Server 2025 domain controllers do not issue RC4 TGTs. A legacy device that still requires RC4 may therefore fail to authenticate with Kerberos against those domain controllers. Test authentication paths that cross operating-system generations, trusts and appliances before upgrading or changing domain-controller placement.
The same Microsoft material describes a plan to disable RC4 as the default assumed supported type for Active Directory domain controllers by the end of the second quarter of 2026. That date is a reported plan, not confirmation that every environment or service has completed the transition. Check the current Microsoft status and your own domain-controller behavior before relying on the change.
What AES migration does and does not solve
Restricting RC4 addresses one important Kerberoasting exposure path and reduces reliance on a weaker encryption type. It does not remove SPNs, reset weak passwords, reduce service-account privileges, prevent delegation abuse or invalidate forged TGTs. Keep those controls in the same hardening program.

Use Protected Users for selected human accounts
What membership changes
The Protected Users group is a targeted control for sensitive human identities, not a general-purpose container for every account. Members must have AES keys available and cannot use NTLM, DES or RC4 Kerberos preauthentication, or Kerberos delegation. Protected Users also limits credential-caching behavior and restricts the TGT lifetime and renewal to 240 minutes (four hours).
Microsoft’s documentation is explicit: Never add accounts for services and computers to the Protected Users group. Service identities and computer accounts can break because they commonly depend on delegation, long-lived tickets, non-AES keys or unattended authentication.
Check prerequisites before adding a user
- Confirm that every domain controller handling the user’s authentication supports the required AES behavior.
- Verify that the user’s account has usable AES keys. A password reset or password-history review may be required to create keys that were not present when the password was last set.
- List applications, scripts, scheduled tasks, remote-management tools and network shares that use the account.
- Test sign-in from each approved workstation, jump host and remote-access path.
- Confirm that the user does not require NTLM fallback, delegation or a TGT longer than four hours.
Roll out in a controlled group
- Select a small set of high-value human accounts with known owners and documented recovery contacts.
- Add only those users to Protected Users after the prerequisite checks.
- Have each user perform normal sign-ins and required administrative tasks while you watch domain-controller events and application logs.
- Keep a tested break-glass account outside the group and protect it with separate controls; do not use it as a reason to skip compatibility testing.
- Remove membership promptly if a critical dependency fails, then fix the dependency and retest before trying again.
Privileged users can be locked out when an application or device still relies on a prohibited protocol. Treat the four-hour TGT limit as an operational requirement: long-running administrative sessions and automation may need redesign rather than a simple group change.

Apply authentication policies and silos where conditions must be precise
What these policies control
Authentication policies and authentication policy silos provide configurable restrictions for user, computer and managed service accounts. Depending on the policy, you can set TGT lifetimes, require particular sign-in devices or impose conditions on initial authentication and service-ticket requests.
Microsoft states that Kerberos will not use the weaker DES or RC4 encryption types during preauthentication for accounts governed by the relevant protections. This complements Protected Users but gives administrators more granular scope and conditions.
Use audit mode before enforcement
- Define the account, device and service conditions the application actually requires.
- Assign the policy or silo in audit mode where supported.
- Collect policy-failure events and correlate them with the user, computer, service, source address and time.
- Resolve legitimate failures, update application dependencies and repeat the observation period.
- Move a small pilot group to enforced mode, then expand only when authentication remains stable.
Audit mode records that a request would fail without changing the authentication outcome. Enforced mode can reject requests, so a policy that looks correct on paper can still interrupt production if a service uses an undocumented path.

Validate functional prerequisites
Check the domain functional level, claims support and Kerberos armoring requirements for the specific restrictions you plan to use. Not every policy feature has the same prerequisites. Document which domain controllers, trusts and applications satisfy them before assigning an enforced policy.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Microsoft’s configuration example uses a custom TGT lifetime of 600 minutes (10 hours). That is an example value, not a universal recommendation. Choose a lifetime based on the account’s risk, application behavior and recovery process, and record the reason for the value.
Reduce service-account and delegation exposure
Apply least privilege to SPN-bearing accounts
- Grant only the file, database, API or directory permissions the service requires.
- Remove interactive logon rights when the service does not need them.
- Disable or remove unused identities after confirming that no scheduled task, connection string, appliance or script depends on them.
- Rotate passwords through an owned process and eliminate shared credentials where the application supports separate identities.
- Review privileged-group membership after every application migration or ownership change.
A suitable group Managed Service Account (gMSA) can provide automatic password management for supported services and reduce manual secret handling. It does not make excessive privilege, an exposed SPN or unsafe delegation acceptable. Verify application support, host eligibility and recovery procedures before migrating a legacy identity.
Review unconstrained delegation
With unconstrained delegation, a service can obtain a service ticket to a back-end service in the name of a user who authenticated to it. If the front-end host is compromised, delegated credentials can expose other services and users. Inventory every unconstrained-delegation principal, identify the business requirement and migrate to a narrower delegation design where the application supports it.
Change delegation only after mapping the complete authentication flow. A rushed change can produce failures that look like password or encryption problems because the service still receives a ticket but cannot use it for the required back-end operation.
Monitor ticket activity and investigate signals
Build useful detection context
Use events 4768 and 4769 together with identity, source system, target service, time pattern and encryption type. A single service-ticket request is rarely enough to classify an incident. Look for combinations such as an unusual account requesting tickets for many SPNs, a workstation that has never operated the service suddenly requesting its tickets, or a shift from normal AES activity to legacy encryption.
Best Value
Microsoft Defender for Identity documents possible Kerberoasting alerts involving suspicious TGS requests after SPN discovery, as well as detections related to Golden Ticket activity. Treat an alert as an investigative lead, not proof of compromise. Confirm the requesting process, host owner, account purpose, recent changes and related authentication events.
Plan for event volume
Domain controllers can generate a large number of ticket events. Forward only the fields and event classes your analytics require, set retention according to investigation timelines and baseline high-volume services before writing threshold alerts. A threshold that ignores a busy service may miss abuse; one that treats every request as suspicious will overwhelm responders.
Separate detection from recovery
Detection of a possible forged ticket or unusual service-ticket pattern does not establish the correct KRBTGT recovery sequence. If investigation indicates Golden Ticket compromise, consult current Microsoft incident-response documentation and your organization’s incident commander before changing KRBTGT credentials or invalidating sessions.

Common rollout failures and fixes
A legacy device stops authenticating after RC4 restriction
Confirm the device’s supported encryption types, the account’s configured types and the domain controller handling the request. Revert only the affected scope or use a documented temporary exception while you upgrade or replace the dependency. Do not restore RC4 domain-wide to solve one unidentified device.
A Protected Users member cannot access an application
Check whether the application uses NTLM, delegation, RC4/DES preauthentication, cached credentials or a TGT longer than four hours. Move the user out of the group if necessary to restore access, then redesign or upgrade the dependency before another test.
An authentication policy causes unexplained denials
Review audit events for the exact user, computer, claim and service-ticket condition that failed. Verify domain functional level, claims and Kerberos armoring prerequisites, and keep the policy in audit mode until the denied path is understood.
Monitoring generates too many alerts
Baseline normal 4768 and 4769 traffic, enrich events with service ownership and source context, and alert on combinations of unusual behavior rather than a single request. Preserve the raw events needed for investigation even when an alert is suppressed.
