Start with the display: enable its Game Mode, Fast Mode, or equivalent low-latency setting, then enable ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) when both the console and display support it. Confirm the console is connected to the correct HDMI input and that every cable, receiver, or switch in the path supports the signal you want. On a projector, test its dedicated gaming mode and check whether it disables keystone correction. These changes can improve responsiveness, but no setting guarantees one universal lag reduction across every console, game, TV, or projector.
What input lag is and where it comes from
Input lag is the delay between an action on a controller and the corresponding image appearing on the screen. It is separate from a controller’s wireless latency, a game’s own frame-generation or network delay, and ordinary display motion blur. For a console connected directly to a TV or projector, the display’s video processing is usually the first setting to investigate.

Televisions and projectors may analyze each frame for noise reduction, motion interpolation, sharpening, dynamic contrast, HDR tone mapping, scaling, and geometric correction. Those processes can improve picture quality while adding buffering. A Game, Gaming, Fast, or Low Latency mode typically bypasses some non-essential processing. The exact behavior is model-specific: BenQ describes reduced buffering and bypassing non-essential processing for one projector when Game Mode is enabled, but that description is not a universal specification for every display.
Lag also depends on the signal format. A display can have different processing paths for 4K at 60 Hz, 1080p at 120 Hz, or 1080p at 240 Hz. Therefore, a latency number is meaningful only when the model, picture mode, resolution, and refresh rate are stated together.

The quickest settings sequence
- Open the TV or projector’s picture settings and enable Game Mode, Game, Fast Mode, or the model’s equivalent low-latency option.
- On the console, enable ALLM if the console and display both support it. On PlayStation 5, Sony’s menu path is Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > ALLM.
- Verify that the display is using a compatible HDMI input and that its firmware and the console’s system software are current.
- For 4K at 120 Hz or another high-bandwidth format, use the correct HDMI port and a cable rated for that format. Start with the cable supplied with the console where applicable.
- Temporarily bypass an AV receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch, or capture device if the desired format or low-latency mode will not engage.
- On a projector, test its dedicated gaming mode and check whether it turns off keystone correction or another image adjustment. If so, reposition the projector so it is square to the screen.
- After each change, test the same game at the same resolution, refresh rate, and display mode. Change one variable at a time so you can identify what helped.
Enable Game Mode or the projector’s fast mode
TVs
TV manufacturers use different labels and menu paths. Look under Picture, Picture Mode, General, External Inputs, or a gaming dashboard for Game Mode, Auto Game Mode, Low Latency, or a similar option. Consult the manual for the exact model rather than assuming that a setting called “Standard,” “Sports,” or “Dynamic” is suitable for games.
Game Mode may disable motion smoothing, extra sharpening, noise reduction, or other processing. That can make the image look less processed, but it is normally the intended trade-off for faster response. If the TV offers separate settings for SDR, HDR, and each HDMI input, set the gaming mode for the input and format you actually use.
Projectors
Projectors often expose both a general Game Mode and a separate Fast Mode or Gaming Boost option. BenQ’s GP500 FAQ says: “Please make sure both the Game Mode and Fast Mode are enabled so that you can have the best input lag of the projector.” That statement applies to the GP500 model and its documented settings; another projector may use different names or require a different combination.

A projector’s low-latency path can conflict with image geometry. BenQ’s TK705i manual states that Gaming Boost resets keystone correction to zero. BenQ also says keystone processing on the V5010i can add up to one frame, specified as 4–16 ms. These are model-specific behaviors, not a rule for all projectors. If enabling the fast mode removes keystone, place the projector perpendicular to the screen and level it physically instead of relying on digital correction.
Use ALLM correctly
ALLM lets a compatible console signal a compatible display to switch automatically to its low-latency picture mode during gameplay. Sony describes compatible displays as switching to low-latency mode when a game starts. Automatic switching works only when the console, display, HDMI connection, and software state all support it.
- Update the console’s system software and the display’s firmware.
- On PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > ALLM and enable it.
- On the TV or projector, confirm that the HDMI input supports ALLM and that an automatic game or low-latency mode is allowed.
- Launch a game and check the display’s information banner or picture-mode indicator to verify that it changed modes.
PS5 does not send the ALLM signal while a media app is running, so the display may return to its normal picture mode during video playback. HDMI 2.1 branding alone is not proof of ALLM support; Sony explicitly advises checking the display manual because not every HDMI 2.1 television implements ALLM. If the display does not support ALLM, select Game Mode manually.

Check the entire HDMI signal path
A console can only use a format that every link in the chain accepts. When 4K at 120 Hz fails, falls back to a lower refresh rate, or prevents a low-latency mode from appearing, check the following:
- Correct input: Some displays reserve only one or two HDMI sockets for 4K at 120 Hz, VRR, or ALLM. Use the port identified in the display manual.
- Cable rating: Use the console’s included cable where possible, or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable when the target format requires it. A cable solves compatibility or signal-integrity problems; it does not remove delay caused by the display’s own processing.
- Display firmware: Install the current firmware before diagnosing a missing 4K/120 or ALLM option.
- Console output: Set the console to an output mode the display supports. Automatic detection is useful, but manually selecting a supported format can reveal whether the problem is compatibility.
- Intermediate equipment: Receivers, HDMI switches, soundbars, and capture devices can limit resolution, refresh rate, HDR, VRR, or ALLM. Connect the console directly to the display as a test.
- Power-cycle order: Turn off the console and display, reconnect the cable firmly, then power the display on before the console so the devices renegotiate capabilities.
Sony’s PS5 guidance for 4K/120 troubleshooting points to these same checks: current display firmware, the correct HDMI port, an appropriate cable, console output settings, and intermediary equipment. They establish whether the desired signal can pass; they do not demonstrate that buying a different cable will lower the display’s processing latency.
Projector-specific trade-offs
Keystone correction versus response
Keystone correction digitally reshapes an image when a projector is aimed above, below, or to the side of the screen. Because it requires additional processing, a gaming mode may disable it or make it slower. On the BenQ TK705i, Gaming Boost resets keystone to zero. On the BenQ V5010i, BenQ publishes up to one frame (4–16 ms) of added latency from keystone correction.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
If a fast mode requires zero keystone, adjust the physical setup: center the lens on the screen, keep the projector level, and use lens shift or an appropriate mount where the model provides it. Do not assume that digital correction can remain enabled without changing the latency result.
Compare like with like
Projector latency figures are not interchangeable unless the settings match. A value measured at 1080p/120 Hz cannot be treated as the expected result at 4K/60 Hz. Record the projector model, gaming mode, resolution, refresh rate, and whether keystone is enabled whenever you compare specifications.

How to verify that a change helped
Use a repeatable comparison instead of judging from memory. Select one game with an immediate on-screen response, such as a first-person game, rhythm game, fighting game, or platformer. Keep the console output, HDR state, frame-rate mode, display input, picture preset, and projector geometry unchanged. Record the initial setting, change only one option, then repeat the same action at the same point in the game.
- Check whether the display’s on-screen picture mode changes when ALLM activates.
- Confirm that the console still outputs the intended resolution and refresh rate after enabling a fast mode.
- Watch for side effects such as disabled HDR processing, VRR, motion settings, or keystone correction.
- Restore the previous setting if the image becomes unusable or the console loses signal.
No single input-lag number applies to every console, game, TV, and projector. A mode can improve responsiveness while changing image quality or supported features, so evaluate the complete result rather than chasing a number detached from its operating conditions.

The display still feels slow after Game Mode is enabled
- Check whether a second processing option, such as Fast Mode or Gaming Boost, must also be enabled.
- Confirm that the console is connected directly to the display and that no receiver, switch, or soundbar is buffering the signal.
- Verify that motion interpolation, extra noise reduction, and similar processing are actually disabled in the active picture preset.
- On a projector, check whether keystone correction is still active and whether the selected gaming mode requires zero keystone.
ALLM never switches the display automatically
- Confirm ALLM support in the display’s manual; an HDMI 2.1 label is insufficient.
- Update the console and display firmware.
- Use the HDMI input documented for gaming features.
- Test inside a game rather than a media app, because PS5 does not send ALLM while a media app is running.
- Enable the display’s automatic game-mode option or select Game Mode manually if automatic switching is unavailable.
4K at 120 Hz is unavailable or unstable
- Move the cable to the display’s specified 4K/120 input.
- Try the console-supplied cable or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
- Install current display firmware and check the console’s video-output settings.
- Remove intermediate equipment temporarily. If direct connection works, the receiver or switch is the limiting component.
The projector image is distorted after enabling fast mode
That can occur when the mode resets or disables keystone correction. Reposition and level the projector, use physical lens shift if available, and then recheck the mode. Do not re-enable digital correction without accepting the model-specific latency trade-off.
When an upgrade is justified
A low-input-lag gaming projector is a legitimate upgrade category when your current projector cannot provide a usable low-latency mode, the desired refresh rate, or the necessary HDMI bandwidth. Use published specifications only when they identify the exact resolution, refresh rate, and mode. For a TV replacement, look for a documented Game Mode and ALLM support, then verify the HDMI port and firmware requirements in the model’s manual.
An Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is worth considering when the console’s supplied cable is missing, damaged, or not rated for the signal you need. It is a compatibility accessory, not an independent cure for processing delay. If the display already receives the intended signal reliably, changing the cable alone should not be expected to alter the panel’s input lag.
Quick Recap
A practical pre-game checklist
- Game Mode, Fast Mode, or the equivalent low-latency setting is active.
- ALLM is enabled on compatible devices and tested inside a game.
- The console uses the display’s correct gaming HDMI port.
- The cable supports the selected resolution and refresh rate.
- Firmware is current on the console and display.
- Receivers, switches, soundbars, and capture devices have been bypassed if they limit the signal.
- Projector keystone is disabled when the gaming mode requires it, with the projector physically aligned to the screen.
- Testing uses the same game and output settings after each change.
