To print routine documents with less ink on an HP inkjet, change the individual job’s color setting to Black and White, Monochrome, or Black Ink Only (the label depends on your printer and driver), then select Draft quality when lower density is acceptable. Do not choose High Quality Grayscale if your goal is to avoid color cartridges: HP says that mode deliberately combines black and color ink for smoother gray tones.
Even a black-only or grayscale command cannot promise that an inkjet will never draw from a color cartridge. HP documents color mixing to reduce grain and periodic use of all cartridges for print-head servicing; those functions cannot be disabled. The steps below show where to set the job, how to save the choice, and how to diagnose color consumption without assuming a setting can eliminate it entirely.

The quickest settings change
Color choices are normally made in the print dialog, not on the document itself. Select your HP printer, open its full preferences, and look for a color control under Paper/Quality, Color, Features, or Advanced. Pick the most explicitly black-only option your model exposes:
- Black Ink Only or Black Only is the clearest choice when available.
- Black and White or Monochrome usually requests black output without color shading.
- Grayscale is a broader term; ordinary grayscale may still use color on some inkjets.
For drafts, proofs, internal copies, or long text documents, set Print Quality to Draft. Some drivers call the toner- or ink-saving option EconoMode; it appears only on supported printer-and-driver combinations. HP’s settings guide explains the available labels and their model-dependent behavior at HP print settings guide.

Use print preview before submitting the job. A document application can apply its own color preference after the printer preset is selected, so the final preview is the useful confirmation that the intended mode survived.
Why a black-and-white job can still lower color levels
“Black and white” describes the visible result, not necessarily a guarantee that only black ink leaves the cartridges. HP identifies two inkjet behaviors that explain apparently unexpected color use:
Color mixing to smooth grain
Some HP inkjets mix small amounts of cyan, magenta, or yellow with black to make gray areas look less grainy. The printer can do this even when the document contains no colored text. Whether it happens depends on the model and selected mode, so a black-only command is an intention rather than a universal promise.

Inkjet systems periodically use ink from all cartridges to keep nozzles clear and maintain print quality. HP says this servicing cannot be bypassed. It can reduce a color level between monochrome jobs even when the pages themselves appear black.
High Quality Grayscale is a different goal
High Quality Grayscale is designed for richer gray transitions, not minimum color consumption. HP says it uses both black and color cartridges to produce a wider range of blacks and grays. If your priority is conserving color ink, choose Black Ink Only, Black Only, or Monochrome instead of High Quality Grayscale whenever the driver offers that distinction. Details are in HP’s black-and-white printing guidance.

These limitations are why an ink gauge that falls after a black document does not automatically indicate a faulty driver or a hidden color page. Check the selected mode first, then consider servicing and the model’s normal ink-management behavior.
Windows: set one print job to black output
Windows printer panels differ by application and by whether Windows is using a basic or full-feature HP driver. The wording below describes the path; your panel may use a nearby label.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open the document, web page, or image and choose File > Print (or the application’s print command).
- Select the correct HP printer in the printer list.
- Open Properties, Printer Properties, Preferences, or More settings. Do not stop at the small Windows summary panel if it does not expose color controls.
- Open the tab named Paper/Quality, Color, Features, or Advanced.
- Choose Black and White, Monochrome, Black Ink Only, or Print in Grayscale. If several grayscale choices appear, select the ordinary or black-only option rather than High Quality Grayscale when color conservation matters.
- For routine text or a proof, set Print Quality, Output Quality, or Media to Draft. Select EconoMode only if your driver provides it and the lower density is acceptable.
- Apply the choices, inspect the application’s print preview, and print.
If the black-only control is missing
Some Windows installations expose only a small set of generic options. HP says the full-feature driver may be needed for the printer-specific controls. Reopen the printer’s own properties rather than relying solely on the application’s simplified dialog. If the full panel still lacks a black-only choice, use the closest available Monochrome or ordinary Grayscale option and recognize that the model may still use color for grain reduction or servicing.
Why the same document can behave differently in two programs
Drivers receive settings from the application, and applications can remember their own defaults. A browser, PDF viewer, and word processor may therefore show different labels or restore different values. Treat each application’s preview as the last check, especially after changing paper type, quality, or a saved preset.
macOS: turn off color and lower quality when appropriate
macOS presents printer options in a different arrangement, and the exact menu names depend on the HP driver and the application.

- Open the quality-related panel and choose Draft for routine output if the resulting text remains legible.
- Review the preview, then submit the job.
Some macOS combinations place color choices under a printer-specific options list rather than a panel named Color. If no black-and-white control appears, the installed driver may not expose it for that model or document type. The setting can also change when you switch from a text document to a photo, so verify it again for the new job.

When Draft is the right compromise
Draft reduces print density and is intended for proofs, working copies, and routine text. It may make small fonts, light gray text, fine rules, or graphics less distinct. Raise the quality setting for a customer-facing copy, a form that must scan reliably, photographs, or pages where fine detail matters. There is no universal percentage saving specified by HP, so judge Draft by the readability of your actual paper rather than an assumed number.
HP app: choose grayscale from the preview
If you print through an HP app, the controls are usually attached to the selected printer and the document or photo in the app’s print-preview screen.
- Select the HP printer.
- Select the document or photo you want to print.
- Open the color options, grayscale options, or presets menu.
- Choose Grayscale, Monochrome, Black Ink Only, or Black Only, using the most specific black-only label available.
- Open the quality control and choose Draft for acceptable routine output.
- Check the preview and print.
Supported combinations expose different controls. A photo workflow may offer only grayscale presets, while a document workflow may expose Black Only. If the app’s options do not match the options in the desktop driver, use the app’s preview to see what will actually be sent and avoid assuming that a similarly named preset has identical cartridge behavior.
What each print mode is for
| Mode or label | Primary purpose | Color-cartridge expectation | Quality and trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black Ink Only / Black Only | Routine documents that should be rendered with black ink | Intended to use black alone where the printer supports it; color may still be used for grain reduction or servicing on some inkjets | Best color-saving choice; gray images may look less smooth |
| Black and White / Monochrome | Text and simple documents without color | Requests black output; exact behavior is model- and driver-dependent | Usually clearer for text than a rich grayscale mode |
| Ordinary Grayscale | Black-and-gray output from a color document | May use color on some models | Useful when gray shading matters, but not a guarantee of zero color use |
| High Quality Grayscale | Smoother, wider-ranging black and gray tones | Uses both black and color cartridges according to HP | Better tonal transitions; poor choice when conserving color ink is the priority |
| Draft | Proofs, working copies, and routine text | Depends on the selected color mode and model | Lower print quality and density; use only when legibility is sufficient |
| EconoMode | Ink- or toner-saving output on supported combinations | Availability and behavior depend on the printer and driver | Can look lighter; not present in every HP inkjet driver |
| Color | Photos, charts, and documents where color carries meaning | Uses color cartridges by design | Preserves color information but consumes the most color ink |
The table describes intended behavior, not a promise shared by every model. HP’s own labels and explanations are the authority for the particular printer and driver installed on your computer.

Make the lower-ink choice convenient
Changing six controls for every page invites mistakes. Many HP drivers let you save a combination as a preset, printing shortcut, or custom shortcut.
- Open the printer’s preferences from a print dialog.
- Set Black Ink Only, Monochrome, or the appropriate black-and-white option.
- Set Draft or another acceptable quality level.
- Choose Save as Preset, Printing Shortcut, or Custom Shortcut if the driver provides it.
- Give the preset a descriptive name such as “Routine black draft.”
- Use the preset for ordinary documents, but inspect the preview whenever the document contains photos, gray backgrounds, or critical fine print.
Presets are not universal across operating systems or applications. A preset created in one driver may not appear in another, and an application can override it. HP describes presets and custom shortcuts in its print settings guide; availability remains specific to the installed software and printer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot color use that seems unnecessary
The printout is black, but a color cartridge level dropped
First confirm that the job used Black Ink Only, Black Only, or Monochrome rather than High Quality Grayscale. If the correct mode was selected, the reduction can be explained by the inkjet’s grain-smoothing behavior or periodic servicing. HP states that neither function can be bypassed, so replacing a driver or repeating the job will not guarantee a different result.
The color option keeps returning after you changed it
Check whether you changed the application’s temporary dialog or the printer’s stored preference. Set the option in the full HP properties panel, save a shortcut if offered, and verify the application’s preview. Different programs can maintain separate defaults.
There is no Draft or EconoMode option
That control may not be supported by the model, the selected paper type, the operating system driver, or the HP app. Use the available quality setting and do not treat the missing label as a fault. A full-feature driver can expose more controls on Windows, but it still cannot add a mode the printer does not support.

Text looks too light in Draft
Switch to a higher quality for that job, or reserve Draft for internal copies and proofs. Paper choice, small type, and gray text can make Draft less readable even when ordinary black text remains clear. The goal is the lowest setting that meets the page’s purpose, not the lowest setting in every situation.
A photo or shaded chart looks harsh in black-only mode
Black-only output removes the color information and may render subtle shading poorly. Use ordinary grayscale or a higher-quality setting when tonal detail is important, accepting that some models will draw from color cartridges. For a document that mixes critical text with a color figure, consider printing only the necessary page or section in the richer mode rather than changing every page.
Do not confuse inkjet ink with LaserJet toner
This guide’s main instructions concern HP inkjet printers, which use liquid ink cartridges. HP LaserJet devices use toner, so “ink use” and cartridge behavior are different. For the HP LaserJet Pro 4301, 4302, and 4303 series, HP says grayscale printing reduces color toner use when resolving color print-quality problems; that is toner guidance, not evidence that an inkjet will avoid all color ink. Consult the device-specific instructions at HP’s LaserJet Pro 4301/4302/4303 support page if your model is a LaserJet.

An inkjet-focused setting such as Black Ink Only may not appear on a LaserJet, while LaserJet grayscale terminology should not be assumed to describe liquid-ink behavior.
Replacing cartridges without buying the wrong one
Changing a setting costs nothing; a cartridge purchase is relevant only when a cartridge is depleted or cannot produce acceptable pages. Cartridge numbers cannot be named safely from the printer brand alone. HP uses different consumables across models and regions.
- Read the exact model name and number from the printer’s front panel, label, or installed software.
- Use that complete model identifier when checking cartridge compatibility.
- Confirm the cartridge number and regional version before ordering.
- Do not assume that a cartridge for a visually similar HP printer fits yours.
A new cartridge does not reduce consumption by itself. The saving comes from selecting an appropriate color and quality mode and from avoiding unnecessary pages; the consumable must simply match the exact printer.
A practical routine for low-ink everyday printing
- Open the print dialog and select the correct HP printer.
- Choose Black Ink Only, Black Only, or Monochrome where available.
- Avoid High Quality Grayscale unless smoother gray tones justify color-cartridge use.
- Choose Draft for proofs and routine text when the page remains readable.
- Inspect print preview, particularly after switching applications or paper types.
- Save the combination as a preset or shortcut if the driver supports it.
- For photos, shaded charts, forms, or important copies, raise quality or use the required grayscale/color mode for that specific job.
- If a color level still falls after black jobs, account for documented grain reduction and servicing before troubleshooting hardware.
This workflow reduces avoidable color selection and lowers print density where practical while leaving room to choose quality when the document demands it. It also sets the right expectation: an HP inkjet can be directed toward black output, but its built-in maintenance and image-quality routines may still consume some color ink.
