The most reliable way to reduce indoor particle pollution is to stop or reduce the source first. Use an outdoor-vented range hood while cooking, avoid candles and smoking indoors, keep wildfire smoke outside when conditions are safe, and then use portable or HVAC filtration to capture particles that remain. Air cleaners help, but they do not make a continuously polluting source harmless or replace heat-safety decisions during a smoke event.
What creates particle pollution indoors
Indoor particles come from two directions: outdoor air that enters through windows, doors, leaks and mechanical ventilation, and activities inside the home. Cooking, candles, smoking, vaping, fireplaces and other combustion sources can produce fine particles (PM2.5) that penetrate deep into the lungs. Cooking emissions vary with the food, temperature, oil and method; frying, broiling and burned food can create sharp short-term spikes.

Wildfire smoke adds an outdoor source that can overwhelm normal indoor air-cleaning habits. Smoke contains fine particles and gases, so a particle filter is only one part of the response. Venting fuel-burning appliances outdoors, preventing backdrafting and removing the source remain essential.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) summarizes the priority plainly: “Usually, the best way to reduce indoor PM is to reduce its sources.” Ventilation and filtration are supporting controls that lower exposure after you have reduced what is being emitted.

Use a source-control hierarchy
Apply these controls in order, moving down the list when the earlier option cannot fully solve the problem:
- Eliminate: Do not burn candles, smoke or vape indoors, and postpone frying or broiling during a smoke episode.
- Reduce: Lower the temperature and duration of high-emission cooking, use less oil where practical, and prevent food from burning.
- Capture at the source: Start the range hood before cooking and use it through the cleanup period.
- Vent outdoors: A hood that exhausts outside removes pollutants instead of redistributing them.
- Filter the occupied space: Use a correctly sized portable cleaner or compatible central HVAC filter.
Do not assume that a recirculating hood, a small room purifier or a scented candle cancels the emissions from an active source. Capture and filtration work best when the source is intermittent and controlled.
Cooking: control emissions where they start
Run the range hood correctly
- Turn the hood on before turning on a burner or the oven. Starting early lets the airflow establish capture before the plume spreads.
- Use the rear burners when feasible. They are usually closer to the hood’s capture area and can reduce leakage into the room.
- Keep the hood running for 10–20 minutes after cooking to clear residual particles.
- Close nearby interior doors if you need to keep particles out of bedrooms or other occupied areas while the hood operates.
Outdoor exhaust is preferable. A hood that simply recirculates air through a grease filter can remove some grease and odor but does not provide the same removal of fine particles and combustion gases as an exhaust ducted outdoors. If you are choosing or replacing a hood, verify where the air goes rather than relying on the fan’s noise or advertised airflow.

Limit high-emission methods
Frying, searing, broiling and cooking at very high heat generally create more particles than simmering, steaming or baking at moderate temperatures. This is not a reason to avoid those methods permanently; it is a reason to use them with the hood operating, avoid overheating oil and keep food from burning. During wildfire smoke, postpone especially smoky cooking or choose food that can be prepared with minimal heat.
Watch for combustion backdrafting
High-flow exhaust can depressurize a house. In some homes that can reverse the draft of a natural-draft furnace, water heater or other combustion appliance, pulling carbon monoxide and combustion products into living spaces. The risk depends on the appliances, building leakage and hood airflow. If a hood is powerful, a combustion appliance is located indoors, or you notice unusual flame behavior, odors or spillage, ask a qualified HVAC or combustion professional to evaluate the installation. Never disable a carbon-monoxide alarm to accommodate a hood.
After a smoky cooking event
Stop the source, keep the hood operating for the post-cooking period and remove burned food from the room. If outdoor air is clean, brief additional ventilation can clear what remains. If outdoor air is smoky, keep windows closed and use filtration instead; opening a window can replace cooking particles with wildfire smoke.

Candles and other indoor combustion
A candle is a combustion source, even when the flame looks small. Wax, wick and fragrance can generate particles and other combustion byproducts. The simplest reduction is not to burn candles indoors, especially when people with asthma or other respiratory sensitivity are present or when wildfire smoke is already entering the region.
If you choose to burn one under ordinary outdoor-air conditions, keep the wick trimmed, avoid drafts that produce a visibly flickering or sooty flame, and provide reasonable ventilation. Ventilation is a compromise: an open window can dilute candle emissions when outdoor air is clean but can bring in smoke or polluted traffic air when it is not. Extinguish the candle rather than trying to compensate with a purifier.
Apply the same source-first rule to incense, fireplaces, smoking and vaping. Do not smoke or vape indoors. A purifier may reduce airborne particles after smoking, but it cannot remove all gases, residue on surfaces or exposure that occurred before filtration. Fuel-burning appliances should be properly installed and vented outdoors, with carbon-monoxide alarms maintained according to their instructions.
Wildfire smoke requires a separate plan
Wildfire smoke is an outdoor-infiltration problem as well as an indoor-source problem. The goal is to keep smoke out, avoid making additional particles and create one reliably cleaner room. EPA guidance describes indoor PM2.5 during smoke with windows and doors closed and no portable cleaner as roughly 55% to 60% of outdoor levels, but homes vary substantially; observed indoor values can range from about 30% to 100% of outdoor concentrations.
Before smoke arrives
- Choose a room that can be closed off and where occupants can spend several hours.
- Check whether your portable cleaner has a tobacco-smoke CADR suitable for that room.
- Inspect HVAC filter dimensions and the system’s permitted efficiency before buying a higher-rated filter.
- Learn how to set the HVAC system to recirculation and how to close a mechanical fresh-air intake, if those controls exist.
- Keep replacement filters available; smoke can load a filter faster than normal household dust.
While outdoor smoke is high
- Keep windows and exterior doors closed while indoor temperature remains safe.
- Set central HVAC to recirculate if possible, and close the outdoor-air intake for the duration of the event when the system allows it.
- Run a portable cleaner in the chosen room, preferably continuously at a tolerable fan speed.
- Avoid smoking, vaping, candles, incense, aerosol sprays, frying, broiling and other particle-generating activities.
- Do not vacuum with a non-HEPA vacuum, which can redistribute fine dust. Postpone cleaning or use a vacuum designed to contain fine particles.
- Keep the cleaner-room door closed as much as practical and avoid repeatedly opening exterior doors.
When outdoor air improves
Use a current local smoke or air-quality reading to identify a genuinely cleaner period. Then open windows or the mechanical fresh-air intake briefly to flush stale indoor air, while continuing to avoid indoor combustion. Close openings again if smoke rises. If you cannot cool or ventilate safely, move to a cleaner-air shelter, public building or another space with effective cooling and filtration.

Portable cleaners serve the room in which they operate; they do not automatically clean an entire house. For wildfire smoke, EPA recommends a tobacco-smoke clean air delivery rate (CADR) of at least two-thirds of the room’s floor area in square feet. Use more capacity for ceilings higher than 8 feet.

| Room floor area | Minimum tobacco-smoke CADR using the two-thirds rule |
|---|---|
| 150 sq ft | 100 cfm |
| 300 sq ft | 200 cfm |
| 600 sq ft | 400 cfm |
| 900 sq ft | 600 cfm |
These are minimum calculations, not a promise of a particular indoor concentration. A 300-square-foot room with an 8-foot ceiling calls for at least 200 cfm tobacco-smoke CADR; a taller room or a room that opens widely into other spaces needs more capacity or more than one unit. If a specification lists several CADRs, use the tobacco-smoke value for this calculation, not the larger dust or pollen number.
Features that matter
- Particle filtration: A high-efficiency particle filter is the relevant capture stage for smoke particles.
- Low ozone: EPA advises choosing air cleaners certified by the California Air Resources Board (CARB), which produce little or no ozone under that program.
- Fan settings: CADR is tied to airflow. A unit operated on its quietest setting may deliver less clean air than its headline rating.
- Replacement filters: Check cost, availability and the manufacturer’s replacement interval. Smoke loading can shorten service life.
- Placement: Leave intake and outlet clear, keep the unit near occupants in the cleaner room and avoid placing it where curtains or furniture block airflow.
Run the cleaner continuously during a smoke episode if noise and power use are acceptable. A purifier does not remove carbon monoxide, make an unsafe temperature safe or guarantee that every room reaches a healthy concentration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use central HVAC filtration when the system can handle it
For forced-air central systems, EPA recommends a MERV 13 filter or the highest-efficiency filter the equipment can safely handle. Higher resistance can reduce airflow, strain a blower or leave rooms inadequately heated and cooled. Check the equipment documentation, filter slot depth and any manufacturer limit before changing ratings; do not assume every furnace, heat pump or air handler accepts MERV 13.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →During smoke, operate the fan according to the system’s guidance so filtered air circulates. EPA reports an approximate PM2.5 reduction of about 50% when an HVAC filter is upgraded and the fan runs continuously, compared with about 24% for continuous operation with a typical low-efficiency filter. Those percentages are study-derived estimates cited by EPA, not guaranteed results in every house. Actual performance depends on filter fit, leakage, airflow, runtime, room mixing and outdoor infiltration.
Set up recirculation safely
If the system has a fresh-air damper or ventilation mode, close the outdoor intake or select recirculation during the smoke event when the equipment instructions permit it. Restore normal ventilation after outdoor air improves. Do not block a combustion appliance’s required air supply or alter a system you cannot identify; ask an HVAC professional if the controls are unclear.
Inspect and replace filters
A filter that is visibly dirty, damaged or warped should be replaced. Confirm the arrow points in the direction of airflow, seal gaps around the frame and use the exact length, width and thickness specified for the system. A high-rated filter that bypasses air around its edges is less useful than a properly fitted filter the blower can support.

DIY box-fan cleaners: useful but conditional
A box fan paired with a high-efficiency filter can provide a lower-cost temporary cleaner, but construction details affect safety and performance. Use current EPA build instructions, secure the filter so air cannot bypass it, keep the fan on a stable surface and follow the fan manufacturer’s electrical and fire-safety warnings. Inspect the filter as it loads with smoke. A homemade unit should not be presented as equivalent to every purpose-built cleaner, and it should not be left unattended if the fan or wiring is damaged.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBalance smoke exclusion with heat safety
Keeping windows closed is conditional on a safe indoor temperature. Do not overheat a home in an attempt to keep every particle out. If cooling is inadequate, use an air conditioner or heat pump in a recirculating mode when appropriate, move to a cleaner and cooler location, or use a designated cleaner-air shelter. Vulnerable people, including children, older adults and those with heart or lung disease, may need to leave earlier because heat and smoke can compound health risks.
When outdoor conditions become cooler and cleaner, ventilate then rather than during the hottest or smokiest part of the day. Filtration supports smoke control; it is not a substitute for cooling, hydration or medical care.
Match the control to the problem
| Situation | First action | Supporting control |
|---|---|---|
| Routine stovetop cooking | Use the hood before and during cooking; prefer outdoor exhaust | Run the hood 10–20 minutes afterward; use a portable cleaner if needed |
| Burned food or heavy frying | Stop the source and remove the burned material | Continue outdoor exhaust; filter only after the source is controlled |
| Candle or incense use | Extinguish it, especially during smoke events | Ventilate only when outdoor air is clean |
| Wildfire smoke outside | Close openings and avoid indoor particle-generating activities | Run a correctly sized portable cleaner or compatible HVAC filtration |
| Hot indoor conditions during smoke | Move to a cooler, cleaner space or use safe cooling | Use recirculation and filtration where the equipment permits |
Troubleshoot common failures
The room still smells smoky with the purifier running
Check whether smoke is entering through an open window, door gaps, a fresh-air intake or a connected room. Confirm the fan is operating, the filter is installed in the correct direction and the unit’s smoke CADR is large enough for the room. Odor can persist on fabrics and surfaces even after airborne particles fall.
The hood is loud but the kitchen remains hazy
Verify that it exhausts outdoors, that the filter is clean and that the hood captures the active burner. Use rear burners and avoid opening windows that create cross-drafts across the cooking plume. If the hood is very powerful and the home has natural-draft appliances, have backdrafting checked rather than simply increasing fan speed.
The HVAC system cannot use MERV 13
Do not force a filter that restricts airflow or does not fit. Use the highest rating the manufacturer approves, improve filter fit and runtime, and place a correctly sized portable cleaner in the occupied room. A professional can assess whether a deeper filter cabinet or equipment change is appropriate.
Closing windows makes the home dangerously hot
Heat safety takes priority. Use safe cooling, relocate occupants to a cleaner and cooler building, and ventilate during a cooler period when outdoor smoke is lower. Do not rely on a purifier to offset dangerous heat.
A practical maintenance checklist
- Test carbon-monoxide alarms and keep them installed near sleeping areas and combustion appliances according to local guidance.
- Clean or replace range-hood filters as the manufacturer directs; grease-loaded filters reduce capture and increase fire risk.
- Check portable-cleaner filters regularly during smoke and replace them when loaded or at the specified interval.
- Keep HVAC filters sealed, correctly oriented and changed before airflow is visibly restricted.
- Record the room dimensions and ceiling height so you can verify CADR rather than guessing from a model’s name.
- Keep windows, doors and fresh-air controls closed only while indoor temperature and air quality remain safe.
The durable strategy is straightforward: prevent indoor emissions, exhaust cooking pollutants outdoors, keep wildfire smoke from entering when conditions permit, and size filtration to the space and equipment. Each control has a limit, so combine them without sacrificing combustion safety or protection from heat.
