To reduce iMessage storage, first identify whether your iPhone or iCloud is full. Check local capacity at Settings > General > iPhone Storage. If Messages in iCloud is enabled, your messages and attachments also use iCloud storage, which you can review in your Apple Account’s iCloud storage management.
The safest space-saving approach is to remove large attachments selectively, then delete entire conversations only when you no longer need their history. Automatic retention can prevent future buildup, but it also removes older conversations and attachments.
Choose the storage you need to reduce
iPhone storage
Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage and inspect the available capacity and the space attributed to Messages. Deleting unwanted conversations and attachments reduces data stored on that device.
iCloud storage
When Messages in iCloud is on, message content and attachments count toward iCloud storage as well. Review Messages in your Apple Account’s iCloud storage settings. Buying more iCloud capacity increases the limit; it does not remove existing Messages content.

Delete large attachments first
Attachments often provide the most targeted way to reclaim space without losing an entire conversation.
- Open the conversation in Messages.
- Tap the contact or group name at the top.
- Open Photos (on some releases, choose Photos > See All).
- Tap Edit or Select, choose unwanted photos or other media, then tap delete and confirm.
Menu labels vary by iOS release. Use the equivalent media-category and selection controls shown on your iPhone. You can repeat the process for other categories, such as videos or documents.

Delete an entire conversation when its history is no longer needed
Deleting a conversation removes its messages and attachments. In the conversation list, swipe left on the conversation and tap delete, or use its long-press menu. The list also supports selecting multiple conversations where that option is available. Inspect important history first because this has a much broader scope than deleting individual attachments.
Understand Recently Deleted before removing anything permanently
Deleted messages and attachments remain in Recently Deleted for up to 30 days and can be recovered during that period. If you need the space removed immediately, open Recently Deleted and permanently delete the selected items. Permanent deletion cannot be undone.

Set automatic message retention
To stop old conversations accumulating:
- Open Settings > Apps > Messages.
- Tap Keep Messages.
- Choose 30 Days, 1 Year, or Forever.
Choosing 30 Days or 1 Year automatically removes conversations, including all their attachments, after the selected period. Choose this only if you accept losing older message history as it ages out. Forever keeps conversations indefinitely.

With Messages in iCloud enabled, deleting a message or conversation on one device deletes it from your other devices that also use the feature. Apple describes the behavior this way: “Because your messages are in the cloud, if you send, receive, or delete a message on one device, those updates appear everywhere.” Check synchronization before deleting shared history or permanently clearing Recently Deleted.

A practical cleanup order
- Check whether the problem is iPhone storage, iCloud storage, or both.
- Remove the largest unwanted attachments from individual conversations.
- Delete complete conversations only after reviewing their history.
- Check Recently Deleted and permanently clear items only when you are certain they are no longer needed.
- Set Keep Messages to 30 Days or 1 Year if you prefer ongoing automatic cleanup.
- If Messages in iCloud is enabled, expect deletions to synchronize to your other enabled devices.
