The most reliable way to cut HP printing costs is to stop unnecessary pages before they reach the printer, use Draft and grayscale settings for suitable jobs, and compare your real monthly page count with cartridge yields or an Instant Ink plan. Ink also disappears during maintenance cycles, dense coverage, and one-time setup, so a cartridge’s advertised yield is an estimate rather than a promise.
Use the workflow below to control what you print, measure your actual consumption, choose the right cartridge or subscription, and return empties through HP Planet Partners instead of sending them to ordinary curbside recycling.

Why an HP cartridge can run out sooner than expected
Published page yield is measured under defined conditions. Your result changes with the amount of ink on each page, how often the printer services its printhead, and whether the cartridge was supplied for initial setup.

A page containing a few paragraphs uses far less ink than a page filled with photographs, colored backgrounds, charts, oversized bold text, or large shaded areas. Two documents with the same number of pages can therefore consume very different amounts of ink. Treat the yield printed for your cartridge family as a planning estimate, not a guaranteed number of pages.

- Automatic
- These cartridges work with: HP OfficeJet Pro 8020, 8020e, 8025, 8028, 8030e, 8035
- Cartridge yield (approx.): 825 pages black, 315 pages per color
- Up to 2x more prints with Original HP Ink vs. non-Original HP Ink
- 82% of HP ink cartridges are manufactured with recycled plastic
Idle-time servicing uses ink
Inkjet printers may run servicing routines after sitting unused for a while. These routines help keep the printhead ready, but they consume ink without producing a page. HP specifically notes that infrequent printing can trigger servicing, so repeatedly waking an inkjet after long idle periods can increase waste.
Setup cartridges are a special case
Cartridges used while a new printer is being configured can contribute to initialization as well as ordinary printing. Their remaining ink should not be used to predict the yield you will get from a regular replacement cartridge.
A seven-step workflow that prevents wasted pages
- Preview before sending the job. Open the document’s print preview and inspect page breaks, blank pages, oversized images, and accidental duplicates.
- Set the exact page range. In the print dialog, use the Pages or Page range field instead of printing the entire document by default.
- Delete test and duplicate pages. Remove cover sheets, repeated copies, separator pages, and draft pages that you no longer need.
- Choose Draft for internal text. In the printer properties, select Draft, Fast, or the equivalent lower-quality mode when appearance is not critical.
- Select grayscale when color is unnecessary. Choose Grayscale, Black and white, or a similarly named option for text and other monochrome work.
- Lighten the design. Remove full-page backgrounds, reduce large filled shapes, avoid unnecessarily heavy bold type, and use less ink-intensive formatting.
- Batch practical jobs. When timing allows, print several small jobs together instead of repeatedly starting the printer after long idle periods.
Driver labels vary by HP model and operating system, but these controls are normally in the print dialog or under Printer Properties, Preferences, or Quality. Check the preview again after changing settings: a lower-quality mode does not fix a document that still contains an unwanted page.

Use Draft and grayscale without ruining important documents
When Draft is the right choice
Draft is suited to proofreading, internal circulation, classroom handouts, forms you will complete by hand, and other work where speed and legibility matter more than dense, polished output. Inspect a sample first if the document contains small type, thin lines, or light gray elements.
When to keep a higher quality mode
Use the normal or best setting for final client copies, archival records, photographs, presentations, and any page where fine detail or even coverage is essential. Printing an important page twice because Draft looked poor costs more than selecting the appropriate quality once.
What grayscale does—and does not—guarantee
Grayscale prevents color information from being intentionally printed for that job, but model behavior differs. Some HP printers can continue in a backup or single-cartridge mode when one cartridge is empty; others require a particular cartridge or stop until the condition is resolved. Do not assume that selecting black and white will let a printer operate without color ink on every model.

Measure your real ink cost before changing anything
Make a simple record for two or three billing or calendar months. Count the pages you actually print, note how many cartridges of each color you install, and record the price paid for each cartridge. Separate ordinary documents from unusually ink-heavy photo or marketing jobs so one exceptional project does not distort your normal pattern.
Calculate cartridge cost per published page
For each cartridge, divide its purchase price by the manufacturer’s published page yield. Compare that result for the standard-capacity and high-capacity versions sold for your exact printer. The lower package price is not automatically the lower cost per page, and the calculation remains an estimate because your coverage and servicing differ from the test conditions used for the published yield.
Keep the variables with the number
- Record the exact printer model and cartridge family.
- Note whether the cartridge was a setup cartridge or a normal replacement.
- Keep color and black yields separate; a document that uses large color areas can exhaust one color before the others.
- Write down the date, seller, and local currency because availability and prices change.
This record gives you a defensible baseline for deciding whether a subscription is worthwhile and for spotting a genuine change in consumption instead of relying on the printer’s approximate gauge alone.
Choose cartridges by model, yield, and seller—not by appearance
Verify the exact cartridge number
Read the cartridge number shown in the printer’s supplies menu, the current cartridge label, or the printer’s manual. Confirm the full printer model and cartridge family before ordering. Similar-looking cartridges can be incompatible, and regional product numbers can differ.
Compare standard and high-capacity versions
Use the cost-per-published-page calculation rather than package price alone. A high-capacity cartridge can make sense for regular printing when its price premium is smaller than the additional pages it provides. For occasional printing, a lower upfront cost may matter more if the cartridge will sit unused for long periods.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCheck what the listing actually is
Before buying, verify whether the listing is an Original HP cartridge or a compatible alternative, that the seller identifies the correct model, and that the return policy covers an incorrect or defective item. Product availability and prices are volatile, so a price seen today should not be treated as a permanent figure.

Is HP Instant Ink cheaper than buying cartridges?
Instant Ink changes the charging unit: you pay a monthly fee based on pages, while the service includes ink or toner delivery and recycling. HP says cartridges are sent when the connected printer reports low ink, rather than on a fixed monthly shipment schedule. The service page advertises up to 50% savings on ink and toner under HP’s stated comparison methodology. That is a vendor claim, not a universal guarantee for every printer, workload, country, or month.
| Consideration | Buying cartridges | Instant Ink |
|---|---|---|
| How you are charged | Pay for each cartridge you purchase. | Pay a monthly fee for a page allowance; the service includes ink or toner, delivery, and recycling. |
| How supplies arrive | You choose when and where to order a replacement. | HP sends supplies when the compatible printer reports low levels. |
| Cartridge choice | You can compare standard and high-capacity versions and, where appropriate, compatible alternatives. | The subscription cartridge is intended for Instant Ink and only works with HP Instant Ink. |
| Recycling | You arrange a return through HP Planet Partners or another accepted channel. | Recycling is included in the service, and members commonly receive prepaid return materials. |
| Printer requirement | Use the cartridge family specified for your printer. | The printer must be compatible and connected to the internet. |
| Example plan information | Prices depend on the cartridge, seller, and local market. | HP’s current US examples include a $0.99 monthly light-printing tier for up to 10 pages; prices and limits can change. |
When a page-based plan can fit
Instant Ink can be convenient for a household or small office that prints with reasonable regularity and wants automatic delivery instead of keeping replacement cartridges on hand. Unused pages may roll over within the limits of the selected plan, and HP says plans can be changed or cancelled.
When buying cartridges may be safer
Buying cartridges keeps the printer independent of an internet-connected subscription and lets you select capacity and seller for each replacement. It may also be easier to control costs when your printing is highly irregular, because a monthly page allowance can be poorly matched to a few large jobs followed by quiet months.
Run your own subscription comparison
- Count your pages for several typical months, including a month when you print very little.
- Identify the Instant Ink allowance that covers your normal volume and note the plan’s overage charge.
- Compare that recurring fee with the cartridge cost you calculated from your actual replacement history.
- Include color-heavy months, rollover limits, delivery timing, and the requirement for a compatible internet-connected printer.
- Recheck the figures immediately before enrolling because plan prices, allowances, and terms can change.
HP’s Instant Ink FAQ says initial ink delivery can take 7–10 days. Enroll with enough ink remaining to cover that window, especially if you have a deadline.
Understand the trade-offs of subscription-only cartridges
Instant Ink cartridges are tied to the service: HP states that a subscription cartridge only works with HP Instant Ink. If you cancel or otherwise leave the service, plan your transition to a cartridge family that your printer accepts outside the subscription. This restriction is the practical counterpart to automatic delivery and included recycling, so it belongs in the cost calculation rather than being treated as a minor footnote.
Also check the plan’s page definition and rollover rules before enrolling. A page-based fee can be attractive when your page count is stable, but the allowance and overage terms determine the real cost during seasonal spikes or unusually quiet periods.

Recycle empty HP cartridges correctly
HP Planet Partners provides free mail-back recycling for HP ink and toner cartridges. HP says the program operates in more than 60 countries and territories and has recycled more than one billion Original HP ink and toner cartridges.
Mail back an empty cartridge
- Open HP Planet Partners guidance for your country or territory and confirm the available return method.
- Use the program’s prepaid mail-back materials or shipping instructions.
- Package empty Original HP cartridges as directed and send them through the designated carrier.
- Keep the tracking or drop-off receipt when one is provided.
Use a participating drop-off store
HP lists participating Staples, Best Buy, Office Depot/OfficeMax, and Walmart locations. Walmart is listed for ink only, so verify the store and cartridge type before traveling. Participation can vary by location and country.
Use the materials supplied to Instant Ink members
Instant Ink members commonly receive prepaid return materials. Put spent subscription cartridges in those materials and follow the supplied instructions so the recycling is credited to the correct program.
What not to place in curbside recycling
HP states that Original HP cartridges should not go into ordinary curbside recycling. The program also does not accept refilled or remanufactured cartridges. Keep those items separate and check the local program for an appropriate alternative.
Arrange a pallet pickup for large quantities
HP Planet Partners guidance lists pallet pickup for more than 76 toner cartridges or 1,000 ink cartridges. That option is aimed at high-volume workplaces and collection points; smaller quantities should use the mail-back or participating drop-off route available in your area.

The cartridge empties after surprisingly few pages
First check whether those pages contained photos, backgrounds, large filled graphics, or heavy bold type. Then check whether the cartridge was a setup unit and whether long idle periods may have triggered servicing. Compare your page count with the published yield, remembering that coverage and maintenance make the published figure an estimate.

- Up to 2x more prints with Original HP Ink vs. non-Original HP Ink
- 82% of HP ink cartridges are manufactured with recycled plastic
You print mostly black text but still use color
Confirm that the print dialog is set to grayscale or black and white and that the document itself does not contain colored elements. If the printer enters a backup or single-cartridge mode, follow the model-specific behavior shown on its display or in its manual; different HP models handle empty color cartridges differently.
The printer will not accept a subscription cartridge
Check that the printer is enrolled in a compatible Instant Ink plan and connected to the internet. Subscription cartridges are designed to work only with Instant Ink, so they are not a general replacement for a standard cartridge purchased separately.
A plan seems expensive despite a low headline price
Recount your pages, include months of low usage, and add any overage charges created by busy months. Compare the total with your recorded cartridge cost per page rather than with the plan’s promotional headline. The $0.99 US example covers up to 10 pages; it is not a universal price or allowance.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A practical decision checklist
- Print only what you need: preview, set a page range, and remove duplicates before pressing Print.
- Use the lightest acceptable settings: Draft for internal work and grayscale for jobs that do not need color.
- Reduce coverage: remove backgrounds and oversized filled elements.
- Batch sensible jobs: avoid repeated wake-up and servicing cycles after long idle periods.
- Track reality: record pages, cartridges, prices, and cartridge type for several months.
- Buy intelligently: verify the exact model and compare standard versus high-capacity cost per published page.
- Evaluate Instant Ink on your numbers: check compatibility, internet access, allowance, rollover limits, overage cost, and current terms.
- Recycle through the correct channel: use HP Planet Partners mail-back or a participating drop-off location, not curbside recycling.
What the savings strategy looks like in practice
For a lightly used home printer, the biggest gains usually come from previewing and trimming jobs, selecting Draft and grayscale, and avoiding unnecessary color fills. For a regular printer, a page-based plan may simplify supply management, but only if the monthly allowance and overage rules match your measured volume. For a high-volume workplace, cartridge capacity, cost per published page, batching, and pallet recycling deserve formal tracking.
The common thread is measurement: page yield, monthly pages, servicing behavior, and local prices all belong in the same decision. Once those variables are recorded, you can change one setting or purchasing method at a time and see whether the change actually reduces cartridge use.
