You can cut household energy use without remodeling by targeting the largest loads first: condition less space when it is empty, seal accessible drafts, switch the most-used lights to efficient bulbs, maintain heating and cooling equipment, and use less hot water. Start by checking your utility bill or energy dashboard so your first change matches your home, climate, fuel, equipment and control over the building.

Start with the loads that can move your bill

Small standby-power habits are easy to discuss, but heating and cooling usually offer a larger opportunity. The U.S. Department of Energy says they typically account for 43% of a home’s utility bill. Water heating is about 12%, appliances about 15%, and lighting about 11% of an average household’s energy budget. These are national guidance figures, not a prediction for every dwelling; climate, fuel, rates, equipment and behavior change the proportions.

End use Share cited by the U.S. Department of Energy Best first checks
Heating and cooling Typically 43% of a home’s utility bill Thermostat schedule, filter and equipment maintenance, duct or air-leak problems
Water heating About 12% of a utility bill Hot-water use, pipe or tank insulation, temperature-setting safety
Appliances About 15% of household energy consumption Age and efficiency when replacement is due, operating habits, unnecessary run time
Lighting About 11% of an average household’s energy budget Bulbs in the fixtures used most often, controls and daylight

Use the bill’s monthly usage, a utility interval dashboard, or an energy assessment to look for a pattern. A winter spike points toward space heating; a summer spike may indicate air conditioning; a steady high baseline can include water heating, refrigeration, pumps or equipment that runs continuously. If you cannot separate end uses, make one change at a time and compare similar weather and billing periods rather than assuming every percentage applies to your home.

Adjust heating and cooling before buying anything

Thermostat settings are reversible and usually cost nothing. Set a schedule that reduces conditioning while occupants are asleep or away, then returns the home to a comfortable setting before people need the room. The useful setback depends on the system, climate, building response and household tolerance. Avoid settings that create condensation, freeze-protection problems or unsafe indoor temperatures.

Use the controls your system can handle

  • For a conventional furnace or boiler, a programmable thermostat can automate occupied and unoccupied periods if it is compatible with the wiring and equipment.
  • Heat pumps may need a heat-pump-compatible control and a different strategy; large manual setbacks can trigger inefficient auxiliary heat on some systems. Follow the equipment and thermostat instructions.
  • If a health condition, infant, older resident or other need requires a narrow temperature range, keep that requirement ahead of energy savings.
  • Do not disable continuous ventilation or fan operation when an indoor-air-quality or health professional has prescribed it.

The Department of Energy describes a possible 20% to 50% reduction in heating and cooling energy when proper equipment maintenance and upgrades are combined with suitable insulation, air sealing and thermostat settings. That is a combined-measure estimate, not the expected result of a single thermostat adjustment or a guarantee for an individual home.

Keep the system moving air safely

  1. Check the filter type and replacement interval in the equipment manual. Replace or clean it as specified; a clogged filter can restrict airflow.
  2. Keep supply and return grilles open and unobstructed by furniture, curtains or rugs.
  3. Look for visibly damaged or disconnected ducts in accessible areas. Duct sealing or repair in difficult locations is better handled by a qualified technician.
  4. Schedule professional maintenance when the manufacturer recommends it, especially before a heavy heating or cooling season.

Use blinds or curtains to manage solar gain: block strong summer sun where it overheats rooms, and admit useful winter sunlight when that suits the home. Daylight can also reduce lighting use, but never leave a room uncomfortably hot or cold merely to save energy.

Seal drafts you can reach without creating a hazard

Air leaks make rooms uncomfortable and force heating or cooling equipment to run longer. ENERGY STAR’s do-it-yourself guide covers finding hidden attic and basement leaks, evaluating attic insulation and doing the work safely. Focus first on obvious gaps around windows, doors, trim, pipe penetrations and service openings that you are allowed to alter.

Match the material to the joint

  • Caulk: use on stationary cracks and seams, such as a fixed frame-to-wall gap.
  • Weatherstripping: use around movable window and door joints so the sash or door can still operate.
  • Door sweep: use at a door bottom when the threshold and sweep are compatible and the door still closes securely.
  • Removable film or inserts: consider only where permitted and where they will not block required egress or ventilation.

Clean and dry a surface before applying a product, check the label for the material and temperature range, and test that doors and windows still open for emergency exit. Renters should favor reversible measures and ask the landlord before making permanent changes. Never seal combustion-air openings, flues, vents or required ventilation paths. If you see soot, unusual odors, back-drafting, moisture damage or insulation near a heat source, stop and obtain qualified help.

Where to inspect first

  1. Close a window or door on a sheet of paper. If the paper slides out easily, the gasket or weatherstripping may not be sealing.
  2. Look for daylight around frames, baseboards, utility penetrations and attic-access panels.
  3. In an attic or basement, check for gaps around plumbing, wiring and duct penetrations, but do not disturb electrical components or insulation that may contain hazards.
  4. Prioritize leaks connecting conditioned rooms to an attic, crawlspace or outside wall; sealing an interior crack that does not connect to outdoors will have little effect.

ENERGY STAR’s 2024 EPA estimate says homeowners can save an average of 15% on heating and cooling costs, or 11% on total energy costs, by air sealing and adding insulation in specified parts of the home. The estimate is U.S.-based, applies to the stated combination and scope of work, and is not a guaranteed result from adding a strip of weatherstripping.

Replace the lights you use most

Lighting is one of the simplest areas to change because bulbs can often be replaced without construction. The Department of Energy says newer lighting technologies can reduce home lighting energy use by 50% to 75%. Its renter guidance estimates that an average household can save more than $200 per year by using LED lighting; treat that as an estimate because fixture count, hours, electricity prices and existing bulbs vary.

A practical bulb-by-bulb method

  1. List the fixtures that run for the most hours: kitchen, living room, exterior security, work area and frequently used bathrooms.
  2. Read the existing bulb and fixture labels for base type, voltage, maximum wattage, shape and dimmer compatibility.
  3. Choose an LED with the light output and color appearance you want. Use a bulb rated for enclosed fixtures or damp locations when the fixture requires it.
  4. Replace the highest-use bulbs first, then compare the next bill or meter data before buying replacements for rarely used fixtures.

Turn lights off when a room is unoccupied, but do not repeatedly switch a lamp that is controlled by a sensor or automation in a way that defeats the control. Use daylight where practical and close shades when glare or summer heat makes artificial light seem necessary.

Reduce hot-water energy without changing plumbing

Water heating commonly represents about 12% of a utility bill. The least disruptive measures are shorter showers, turning off the tap while soaping or brushing, running full loads in dishwashers and washing machines, and choosing cooler wash settings when they meet the cleaning need.

Temperature settings require care

Consult the water-heater manual or a qualified professional before changing the temperature. Scalding risk, household health needs, local codes and microbial-control requirements can conflict with a simple “turn it down” recommendation. If a household includes people who are especially vulnerable to infection or burns, obtain advice tailored to the system rather than copying a generic setting.

Insulate only compatible components

  • Insulating accessible hot-water pipes can reduce heat loss and waiting time, but keep insulation clear of flues, burners, valves, controls and other areas the manufacturer identifies.
  • A tank jacket or blanket is appropriate only for a compatible tank and installation. Follow the heater manufacturer’s clearance and installation instructions.
  • Repair dripping hot-water faucets and shower valves; wasted hot water is also wasted heating energy.

When a water heater eventually needs replacement, compare certified efficiency, capacity, installation requirements and lifecycle cost. Premature replacement can erase the financial benefit of an efficient model if the existing equipment is safe and serviceable.

Use appliances efficiently and treat standby power as a secondary target

Appliances account for about 15% of household energy consumption in the Department of Energy’s guidance. The largest gains usually come from operating habits and replacement timing rather than discarding working equipment solely for a newer label.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Run dishwashers and clothes washers with full loads when practical, and use eco or air-dry options when they still deliver acceptable results.
  • Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed, allow space for air circulation and clean accessible coils according to the manual.
  • Do not place a refrigerator or freezer beside a strong heat source if you can avoid it.
  • Use a microwave, toaster oven or stovetop for a small meal when that is more efficient than heating a large oven, while following safe cooking practices.
  • Unplug chargers or use a switched power strip for equipment that consumes power while idle, but prioritize continuously running or high-wattage devices before small electronics.

When an appliance fails or replacement is already planned, compare its certified energy use, purchase and installation cost, expected life, repairability and fit. A lower-wattage model is not automatically cheaper if it requires more run time or cannot perform the needed task.

Smart controls are optional, not a prerequisite

Connected thermostats, occupancy sensors, timers and energy monitors can automate schedules and reveal usage patterns. They are useful when the household will configure and maintain them, but buying a device is not the first step. A manual thermostat schedule, a power strip or simply turning off an unused light can deliver the same action without a purchase.

Before installing a smart control, verify wiring, power requirements, heating-system type, network needs, privacy settings and whether renters may replace the existing control. If a device loses connectivity, the underlying heating or lighting system should remain safe and usable manually.

Renters: choose reversible measures first

Renters often control habits and portable equipment but not insulation, windows, ducts or water-heater settings. Start with changes that leave the property intact:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use the existing thermostat’s schedule or request a compatible programmable control from the landlord.
  • Install removable weatherstripping or draft stoppers around movable joints, after checking lease rules and fire-safety requirements.
  • Use compatible LED bulbs in fixtures you are allowed to change; keep the original bulbs for move-out if required.
  • Close blinds against summer sun, use daylight and keep vents and radiators unobstructed.
  • Wash full loads, shorten hot-water use and report leaks or malfunctioning equipment promptly.
  • Ask the landlord or property manager to investigate failed window seals, duct leaks, unsafe combustion appliances and inadequate insulation.

The Department of Energy’s renter guidance specifically discusses thermostat setbacks, LEDs, caulk and weatherstripping. Permanent caulking, window replacement, added insulation and water-heater changes should be coordinated with the property owner.

Thermostat schedule None if using existing control Heating and cooling Low Usually no; replacement control may require approval Yes Maintain safe temperatures and system compatibility
Filter maintenance Replacement filter cost, if needed Heating and cooling airflow Low Usually no Yes Use the specified filter and do not alter required ventilation
Weatherstripping Low Air leakage Low Check lease Usually Do not block egress or ventilation
Caulk Low Stationary air leaks Low to moderate Often yes for permanent work Not easily Never seal combustion-air openings
LED bulbs Low per bulb Lighting Low Check fixture and lease rules Yes Match base, voltage, dimmer and location ratings
Hot-water habit changes None Water heating Low No Yes Do not change heater temperature without appropriate advice
Pipe or tank insulation Low to moderate Water heating Moderate Usually requires approval Sometimes Observe manufacturer clearances
Efficient appliance replacement Highest Appliance load Installation-dependent Owner decision in rentals No Compare lifecycle cost; avoid premature replacement

Use rebates and weatherization programs as a second step

The Department of Energy’s Home Energy Rebates program describes HOMES and HEEHR pathways and upgrade categories, while its whole-house weatherization guidance covers measures and health-and-safety checks. Eligibility, funding, income rules, approved contractors and availability vary by state, utility and locality. Verify current details with your state energy office, utility or local provider before assuming a rebate or assistance payment applies.

Ask whether an assessment is required before work, whether the program covers renters, which equipment certifications are accepted, how incentives are paid and whether landlord consent is needed. Do not buy equipment solely to chase an advertised incentive until the program confirms the requirements in writing.

A low-disruption 30-day plan

  1. Days 1–3: establish a baseline. Save the latest bill, record meter or dashboard usage and note unusual heating, cooling or hot-water behavior.
  2. Days 4–7: change the schedule. Program occupied, sleep and away periods; confirm that the system responds normally.
  3. Week 2: maintain airflow. Check the filter, clear grilles and document any duct or equipment problem for the owner or technician.
  4. Week 3: stop accessible drafts. Test doors and windows, apply the correct removable weatherstripping where allowed and leave ventilation and combustion openings clear.
  5. Week 4: target lighting and hot water. Replace the highest-use bulbs, shorten avoidable hot-water use and fix or report leaks.
  6. After 30 days: compare fairly. Compare usage with a similar-weather period, adjust for occupancy and billing days, and keep the measures that improve comfort at acceptable cost.

When a saving measure goes wrong

The bill did not fall

Check weather, billing days, occupancy, energy rates and whether another appliance or heater ran more often. A single low-cost action may be hidden by a colder month or a rate change. Keep a simple log rather than adding several unmeasured purchases at once.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A room became too hot, cold or humid

Restore the previous thermostat schedule, confirm that filters and grilles are clear, and look for airflow or envelope problems. Persistent moisture, condensation, mold, unusual odors or combustion symptoms require qualified assessment rather than more sealing.

A window or door will not operate after sealing

Remove or reposition the weatherstrip so the opening, lock and emergency egress work normally. Use weatherstripping on movable joints and caulk only on stationary cracks.

A heater, water heater or electrical device behaves unexpectedly

Stop the change, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and contact a qualified professional. Do not cover vents, alter combustion air, open electrical equipment or change water-heater settings when you cannot verify the safety requirements.

What to do first

Begin with the utility bill and the largest visible load, then use reversible actions: schedule heating and cooling, maintain the system, seal appropriate drafts, replace high-use bulbs and reduce hot-water waste. Add insulation, equipment upgrades or program-funded work only after confirming compatibility, permission, safety and local eligibility. This sequence lowers the chance of spending money on a measure that cannot address your home’s actual energy use.
