Reduce fingerprints with a clean, soft lint-free cloth, and reduce glare by changing the reader’s angle or the position of the light. Turn the device off and unplug it before cleaning, remove loose grit without rubbing, and follow the exact care instructions for your model before using any moisture. A matte screen film can be tried only when one is made for your exact reader; evidence for glare reduction is anecdotal and may involve a clarity trade-off.
Why fingerprints and glare need different fixes
A metal e-reader can look smudged because oils from your fingers collect on the casing, the display glass or both. Glare is different: it is light reflected toward your eyes from the display surface. A cloth can remove an oily mark, but it cannot change the direction of a lamp or window reflection. Conversely, moving a lamp will not remove a fingerprint.

- Display: remove smudges gently, then control reflections through positioning. Consider a film only as an optional, model-specific experiment.
The exact reader in this title is not identified, so do not assume that every metal coating, screen layer or port seal accepts the same products. Start with the manufacturer’s care page for your model. Rakuten Kobo’s official instructions are a useful example of the level of caution required: they call for a soft lint-free cloth, light pressure and removal of abrasive dust before wiping, while allowing a cloth to be slightly dampened with water for Kobo readers.

Before you touch the reader: identify the model and finish
Find the exact model
Check the model name in the device’s Settings/About screen, on the original packaging or on the purchase record. Record the generation as well as the family name; a protector that fits one size or release may not fit another. Search that model’s support page for cleaning, liquid and screen-protector guidance. If the manufacturer gives different instructions from the general sequence below, follow the manufacturer.
Check what is actually metal
“Metal e-reader” may describe a rear shell, a frame or only a decorative panel. The display surface may have a separate glass or polymer layer, and buttons, seams and ports can have different tolerances. Do not infer that a metal back makes the screen waterproof or permits stronger cleaners.
Prepare a clean work area
- Use a freshly laundered, soft lint-free cloth. A microfiber cloth is suitable when it is clean and free of trapped grit.
- Keep the reader away from an open bottle, sink or spray bottle.
- Have a second dry cloth available if the manufacturer permits a slightly damp cloth.
How to remove fingerprints safely
- Power down and unplug. Turn the reader off and disconnect any cable before cleaning. This reduces the chance of activating the screen while wiping and keeps liquid away from an energized port.
- Inspect for grit. Look across the display and casing under diffuse light. If you see sand, crumbs or other abrasive particles, remove the loose dust first with a gentle, non-rubbing motion. Wiping grit across the surface can scratch it.
- Start dry. Fold the soft lint-free cloth and make light passes over the casing and display. Use a clean section of cloth as oils transfer to it. Rakuten Kobo’s instruction is explicit: “Use a soft lint-free cloth and gently wipe the screen. Do not apply excessive pressure to the screen.”
- Use only model-approved moisture. For Kobo readers, the manufacturer says the cloth may be slightly dampened with water. Dampen the cloth, never the reader, and wring it so it is not wet. If your model’s instructions do not permit water, stay dry.
- Keep openings dry. Do not spray liquid onto the device or wipe liquid toward USB ports, speakers, buttons, card slots or seams. Avoid soaking the cloth and stop if moisture begins to collect at an edge.
- Dry and inspect. Make a final pass with a dry part of the cloth. Wait until the surface is fully dry before reconnecting power or using the reader.
Use light pressure even when a mark is stubborn. More force can stress an E Ink panel or spread oil into a seam; it does not make a safe cleaner more effective.
Cleaning the metal casing without dulling it
Match the cloth to the finish
Brushed, anodized, painted and polished metal can show marks differently. Wipe along an existing brushed direction rather than scrubbing across it. On a polished panel, use straight, overlapping passes instead of circular rubbing, which can make fine swirls easier to see. These are handling practices, not a guarantee for an unidentified coating, so the model’s care instructions take priority.
Do not reach for household chemicals
Generic advice cannot establish that a particular coating tolerates a solvent, disinfectant or abrasive. Kobo specifically warns against harsh chemicals and abrasive materials. Until your own manufacturer says otherwise, avoid abrasive pads, powdered cleaners, polishing compounds and strong chemical sprays. Never combine a cleaner with water on the device itself.

When a fingerprint will not disappear
Stop if a mark remains after several gentle passes. It may be residue under an edge, a change in the coating or a scratch rather than surface oil. Continued rubbing can enlarge the damaged area. Photograph the mark and ask the manufacturer or seller about finish damage instead of escalating to a harsher product.
How to reduce glare while reading
Change the screen angle first
Tilt the reader a few degrees at a time until the reflected lamp or window moves out of your line of sight. A small change in angle can be more effective than pressing harder on a smudge. If you use a stand or case, adjust its viewing position rather than bending the reader.

Move the light source
Shift a desk lamp to the side, raise or lower it, or turn the reader so a window is not directly in front of the display. Diffuse, indirect room light is generally easier to position than a bare point source. Make one change at a time so you can tell whether the reflection, not the screen contrast, improved.
Use the reader’s front-light controls carefully
Many E Ink readers illuminate the page with a front light. Rakuten Kobo describes its E Ink screen as offering a “glare-free, print-on-paper reading experience” and says its front light diffuses illumination across the page. That is Kobo’s description of its technology, not proof that every e-reader is reflection-free. If your reader has a front-light slider, lower it until the page is comfortable after you have removed external reflections; excessive brightness can make a nearby reflection more noticeable.
Separate a reflection from a dirty screen
- If the bright patch moves when you move your head or the reader, it is likely reflected light; change the angle or lamp position.
- If a mark stays in the same place and follows a finger-shaped pattern, clean it with the safe sequence above.
- If the whole page looks hazy from every angle after cleaning, check the display and its surface layer for damage and contact the manufacturer.
Should you install a matte screen film?
A matte or anti-glare film is an optional category, not established manufacturer advice for the unidentified device. One reader post reports less glare after using a matte protector, but that anecdote does not establish compatibility, typical results or the effect on sharpness. Treat a film as an experiment with a reversible exit, not as a guaranteed repair.

Checks before buying a film
- Confirm the exact model and screen dimensions, including the generation or release year.
- Check whether the film is intended for an E Ink display and whether it leaves the front-light area, bezel, buttons and sensors unobstructed.
- Read the device manufacturer’s warranty and care terms before applying an adhesive layer.
- Choose a product that can be removed if text appears less crisp or touch response changes; do not promise yourself a particular glare percentage.
Apply it only after cleaning
Power off the reader, remove all dust and fingerprints with the approved dry method, and work in a low-dust room. Follow the film maker’s alignment and squeegee instructions exactly. Do not press hard on the E Ink panel to chase a bubble. If grit is trapped underneath, lifting and repeatedly reapplying the film can create more contamination; stop and reassess the fit.
Common mistakes and how to recover
Spraying cleaner directly on the reader
Why it fails: liquid can run into ports, seams or controls, and the product may attack an unknown coating.
Recovery: unplug the device, stop adding liquid and gently blot accessible moisture with a dry lint-free cloth. Do not shake the reader or use heat. If liquid entered an opening, follow the manufacturer’s liquid-damage procedure or contact support before powering it on.
Wiping over visible sand or grit
Why it fails: particles can drag across the display or finish.
Recovery: stop rubbing, remove loose particles without pressure and inspect under good light. If you see a scratch, do not polish it with an abrasive compound; ask the manufacturer about service options.

Using paper towels, tissues or a rough sleeve
Why it fails: rough fibers can leave lint or create fine marks, especially when trapped debris is present.
Recovery: switch to a clean, soft lint-free cloth and use the dry sequence. Replace any cloth that has picked up grit.
Pressing harder to remove a stubborn mark
Why it fails: the display is not cleaned by force, and pressure can stress the panel.
Recovery: stop, let the surface rest and try one gentle pass with a model-approved cloth. Persistent marks need manufacturer advice, not stronger pressure.

Recovery: remove it carefully according to the film instructions and check the exact model number before trying another protector. If clarity changed, compare the display without the film before deciding whether the glare benefit is worthwhile.
A repeatable maintenance routine
Before each cleaning
- Identify the model and review its current care instructions.
- Turn it off and unplug it.
- Inspect for grit, loose debris, cracks or lifting edges around a film.
During cleaning
- Use a clean, soft lint-free cloth and light pressure.
- Remove dust before wiping oily marks.
- Use only the moisture method approved for that model; never spray the reader.
After cleaning
- Check that the casing and display are dry and that no lint remains at openings.
- Reconnect power only after moisture is gone.
- For glare, adjust the reader and light before considering a film.
Clean when fingerprints or dust interfere with reading rather than on a rigid schedule. Frequent dry, gentle passes are preferable to infrequent aggressive scrubbing.
When cleaning is not the answer
Contact the manufacturer when a display remains hazy after safe cleaning, a coating is peeling, a scratch appeared without an obvious cause, liquid entered an opening or the reader behaves abnormally after moisture exposure. A matte film cannot correct a damaged panel, and a metal casing does not by itself confirm resistance to water or chemicals.

The safest order of operations is therefore simple: confirm the model, power down and remove grit, clean with a soft lint-free cloth using only approved moisture, then solve reflections with angle and light changes. Only after those steps should you evaluate a correctly fitted matte film, with the understanding that its results are not quantified and its effect on clarity may vary.
