What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
To reduce ghosting and sluggish refresh on a color E Ink monitor, select its fastest speed-oriented mode while scrolling, typing, or moving the pointer; run a Full Refresh (or enable Auto Full Refresh) when remnants accumulate; switch to Normal, Text, or another quality mode for reading and static documents; and disable unnecessary Windows or macOS animation effects. Faster modes lower latency but usually leave more residue or reduce clarity, while slower modes clean the image at the cost of delay.
Start with this seven-step fix
- Open the monitor’s driver, control utility, or on-screen settings. Confirm that the computer is using the refresh controls intended for the monitor rather than a generic display profile.
- Choose Speed, Video, or the equivalent fast preset for scrolling, typing, pointer movement, and other interactive work. BOOX recommends Speed mode for third-party apps and provides Normal, Text, Video, and Slideshow presets on supported displays.
- Scroll in shorter movements while you test. Large, rapid page movements create more changing pixels at once and make residue easier to see. If the pointer or text still lags, keep the speed preset rather than repeatedly forcing a full refresh.
- Run Full Refresh when residue builds up. Use the monitor’s Full Refresh command, or turn on Auto Full Refresh if available. A full cycle clears accumulated remnants more effectively than remaining in a partial-refresh state.
- Move one step toward Normal or Text mode for clean documents. This normally improves text edges and reduces visible residue, but it introduces more delay and may produce more noticeable flashes.
- Turn off unnecessary animation and smooth-scrolling effects in the operating system and applications. The DASUNG manual warns that conventional Windows and macOS rendering effects can be inappropriate for E Ink monitors.
- Check the model manual for temperature and firmware guidance. Refresh behavior is model-specific, and a setting that works on one color panel may not behave the same way on another.
These settings cannot make an electrophoretic panel behave exactly like an LCD or OLED. They are a way to choose where the unavoidable compromise appears: motion latency, residual images, flicker, or image quality.

What ghosting is and why color E Ink refreshes slowly
Ghosting is incomplete clearing between updates
BOOX defines ghosting as faint remnants of earlier text or images that remain visible after the screen refreshes. The effect occurs because electrically controlled micro-ink particles physically move inside each pixel. A partial update may move particles toward their new positions without completely clearing the previous state, so a pale outline, band, or “shadow” remains.

That is why a speed mode can feel much more responsive while leaving more residue than a quality-oriented mode. A Full Refresh drives a more comprehensive clearing cycle, which removes the accumulated image but takes longer and may flash the entire panel.

Color adds a filter layer and additional timing trade-offs
E Ink’s Kaleido architecture combines a TFT backplane, an ink layer, a color-filter layer, and a protective sheet. E Ink describes Kaleido as supporting 16 grayscale levels and 4,096 colors. The layered construction means the color appearance, contrast, and timing do not map one-for-one to a monochrome panel. A waveform that is acceptable for black text may be less effective at clearing a colored area, so images and tinted backgrounds can expose ghosting more readily.
Published refresh figures are technology context, not a monitor guarantee
E Ink’s Gallery 3 technical material reports a 350-millisecond page turn for monochrome text, a 500-millisecond color refresh in fast mode, 750–1,000 milliseconds in standard mode, and 1,500 milliseconds in optimal mode. Those are technology-publisher figures under stated test conditions, not a promise that every color E Ink monitor will reach the same latency. E Ink contrasts them with approximately two seconds for monochrome and 10 seconds for color in first-generation technology, illustrating the improvement over earlier generations.
| Gallery 3 figure | Published value | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Monochrome text page turn | 350 ms | Technology-level figure from E Ink; not a specification for every monitor. |
| Color, fast mode | 500 ms | Fast color-refresh figure reported by E Ink. |
| Color, standard mode | 750–1,000 ms | Slower, cleaner-oriented timing range in the same technical material. |
| Color, optimal mode | 1,500 ms | Highest-latency mode in E Ink’s published comparison. |
| First-generation monochrome | About 2 seconds | Historical comparison supplied by E Ink. |
| First-generation color | About 10 seconds | Historical comparison supplied by E Ink. |
Use these numbers to understand why color E Ink feels slower than a conventional monitor, not to predict the exact delay of your unit. The mode selected, the monitor’s firmware, the connected computer, the content being drawn, and ambient conditions all affect what you see.
Which refresh mode to use for each task
| Task | Recommended starting mode | What you gain | What you give up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fast scrolling through a web page or document | Speed, Video, or the monitor’s fastest preset | Lower perceived latency and fewer pauses during movement. | More residual text, less even color, and potentially lower contrast. |
| Typing and moving the pointer | Speed | Cursor and newly entered characters appear sooner. | Previous content may remain faintly visible until a later refresh. |
| Reading a finished article or book | Normal or Text | Cleaner letterforms and a calmer static image. | Page changes and scrolling take longer. |
| Viewing a photograph, illustration, or colored dashboard | Normal, quality, or optimal equivalent | More complete transitions and better color consistency. | Longer updates and more visible full-screen flashes when clearing. |
| Presentation slides that change infrequently | Slideshow or quality mode | Cleaner individual slides and less concern about continuous motion. | Each slide change can take longer. |
| After a long session with layered residue | Full Refresh or Auto Full Refresh | Most effective clearing of accumulated remnants. | Temporary flash and a noticeable interruption. |
Speed or Video mode for interaction
Start with the speed-oriented option whenever the screen is changing continuously. BOOX specifically suggests Speed mode for third-party applications and exposes Normal, Text, Video, and Slideshow choices on supported monitors. “Video” is a label, not evidence that the panel can display ordinary full-motion video like an LCD; it generally indicates the manufacturer’s faster waveform intended for changing content.
Normal or Text mode for legibility
Use a normal or text preset when the page is mostly static and you care about crisp character edges, stable backgrounds, and fewer remnants. It is often the better choice for editing a document after the initial navigation is complete. Expect more latency when you scroll or move windows.

Full Refresh and Auto Full Refresh
A full refresh is the cleanup tool, not the setting to use after every keystroke. Invoke it after a dense page, an image-heavy view, or prolonged scrolling has left a visible layer of old content. Auto Full Refresh can automate that cleanup at intervals if the monitor offers it. Because a full cycle takes longer and may flash, set an interval that removes residue without interrupting work constantly.
How to tune a color E Ink monitor step by step
1. Find the correct control path
Refresh modes may be exposed in a desktop utility, a monitor menu, a dedicated driver, or a hardware button. Open the documentation for the exact model and identify the labels it uses. Do not assume that a setting named “fast” on one brand has the same waveform or quality as “fast” on another. If the utility is missing, reinstall the model’s intended driver or control software before judging performance.

2. Establish a clean baseline
Display a page of ordinary black text on a light background, perform one Full Refresh, and then test a short scroll in the fastest mode. This gives you a known starting image. If residue is already present immediately after a full cycle, check the signal path, firmware, and panel conditions before changing application settings.
3. Match the preset to the activity
Use Speed or Video while content is moving. Switch to Text or Normal once you stop scrolling and begin reading. Use Slideshow or an equivalent quality preset for infrequently changing presentations. On a monitor without named presets, choose the option described as speed-oriented for interaction and the option described as quality, optimal, or text-oriented for static work.
4. Clear residue deliberately
When you can see outlines from earlier pages, stop the activity and trigger Full Refresh. If Auto Full Refresh is available, enable it and observe whether its interval is tolerable. A full refresh is especially useful after a page containing large dark areas, colored blocks, photographs, or many rapidly changing elements.

5. Remove software-generated motion
Disable animated window transitions, transparency effects, animated wallpapers, and smooth-scrolling features that are not essential. Applications that continuously redraw a cursor, caret, notification, or web animation can keep the panel in a partial-refresh state and make ghosting appear worse. The DASUNG manual’s warning applies to both Windows and macOS: rendering effects designed for conventional displays may be unsuitable for E Ink.
6. Test the connection and intended driver
Confirm that the monitor is connected through the interface and adapter combination specified for the model. Then verify that its control utility recognizes the display and that the selected mode persists after reconnecting or waking the computer. A monitor operating with a generic profile may lack the manufacturer’s waveform choices or automatic ghost-removal behavior.
7. Check firmware and environmental notes
Read the model manual and release notes for firmware requirements, temperature limits, and known refresh behavior. E Ink panels can respond differently outside the conditions assumed by the manufacturer. Apply firmware updates only through the documented procedure, then repeat the baseline test rather than assuming an update changed every mode equally.
Workload-specific techniques
Web browsing and long documents
Navigate in Speed mode, then switch to Text or Normal for sustained reading. If a page contains advertisements, animated elements, or large colored panels, hide or pause them where possible. A clean static page is easier for the monitor to maintain than a page that keeps changing below the scroll position. After several screens of rapid movement, use Full Refresh instead of repeatedly toggling modes.
Writing and coding
Speed mode keeps newly typed characters and the caret responsive. Turn off blinking cursors or reduce their frequency if the editor allows it, because a constantly changing caret can create a small trail. Once a section is complete, move to Text or Normal and perform a full refresh if old lines remain visible. This workflow accepts a little residue during input to avoid a full-panel flash after every edit.

Spreadsheets and dashboards
Fast mode is useful while selecting cells or scrolling, but dashboards with colored tiles and frequent automatic updates are demanding. Pause automatic updates when you need to inspect a value, use a quality-oriented preset for a stable view, and refresh the panel after returning to a different sheet. If the dashboard cannot stop animating, the monitor may never look as clean as it does with a static document.
Images and color illustrations
Choose Normal, optimal, or the closest quality setting for a photograph or illustration. Color transitions can expose partial-refresh artifacts that are difficult to notice in plain text. Allow the image to finish updating before evaluating its color or residual marks, and run a Full Refresh when switching between several image-heavy pages.
Presentations
Prepare slides in Slideshow or another quality preset, and advance one slide at a time. Avoid animated transitions unless they are essential; E Ink is optimized for discrete page changes rather than continuous effects. A full refresh between particularly dense slides may produce a cleaner result than leaving the monitor in a fast partial-refresh state.

How to compare monitors beyond the headline refresh rate
When choosing between color E Ink monitors, evaluate the same workload on each model and record the mode used. The useful comparison is not simply “which has the highest number?” but “which produces an acceptable image at the latency I can tolerate?”
- Mode-specific latency: Measure or observe scrolling, typing, and page turns in the exact preset you will use. A quoted maximum may apply only to an aggressive mode.
- Residual ghosting: Check a dark-text page, a large color block, and an image after several changes. Note whether a single full refresh clears the residue.
- Full-refresh behavior: Record how often the monitor flashes, how long the interruption lasts, and whether Auto Full Refresh can be adjusted.
- Text and color clarity: Inspect small fonts, thin lines, and saturated colors at your normal viewing distance, not only a promotional image.
- Connection and driver support: Confirm that your computer, adapters, operating system, and the monitor’s control utility support the desired modes.
- Physical size and ergonomics: Consider diagonal size, viewing distance, stand adjustment, and desk space. A larger panel can make a faint trail more noticeable simply because more content is visible at once.
Troubleshooting by symptom
“Scrolling is too slow, but the image is clean.”
Select Speed or Video mode and disable smooth scrolling and other animations. If the delay remains, verify the intended driver and connection. Do not solve a latency problem by forcing Full Refresh after every movement; that usually increases the interruption.
“Scrolling is responsive, but old text remains.”
Keep the fast mode for navigation, then trigger Full Refresh after the scrolling burst. If residue returns immediately on a mostly static page, switch to Normal or Text mode and test again. Persistent residue after a full cycle warrants a firmware and hardware check using the model’s manual.
“The screen flashes too often.”
Increase the Auto Full Refresh interval, if the control exists, or use manual Full Refresh at natural pauses. Move one step toward a normal or text mode if you can accept additional latency; a mode change may reduce the need for aggressive cleanup even though it does not eliminate all flashes.
“Colors look uneven or muddy after movement.”
Use a quality-oriented preset for the final view and wait for the update to finish before judging it. Large colored regions can reveal partial-update compromises more clearly than black text. Run a Full Refresh after switching away from an image-heavy page.
“Ghosting appears in every mode.”
Perform a documented Full Refresh, confirm the monitor’s utility recognizes the panel, check firmware and temperature guidance, and test with a simple static text page. If remnants remain after a complete cycle, contact the manufacturer or seller with the model, firmware version, connection type, and a description of the test; mode changes alone may not correct a hardware or signal problem.
What performance you should realistically expect
A color E Ink monitor is designed around reflective, low-power viewing and physically moving ink, not the instantaneous pixel transitions of an LCD or OLED. Even modern color technology has distinct fast, standard, and optimal timing ranges. The practical goal is therefore not zero ghosting at all times. It is to keep interaction responsive enough in Speed mode, preserve legibility in Text or Normal mode, and schedule complete clears when residue becomes distracting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse the fastest preset for work that changes continuously, a cleaner preset for the final static image, and Full Refresh as a reset when partial updates have accumulated too much residue. Disable software motion that the panel cannot reproduce gracefully, keep the monitor’s driver and firmware current, and judge any advertised refresh figure against the exact task and mode you intend to use.
