Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteUse the fastest refresh mode that keeps text readable, enable automatic full refresh where your firmware offers it, and run a manual full refresh when artifacts accumulate. For color-heavy pages, switch temporarily to a slower quality mode. Ghosting cannot be eliminated with zero delay: color E Ink needs longer particle-driving waveforms, so cleaner updates take more time.
What ghosting is—and why color E Ink shows more of it
Ghosting is a faint remnant of text, images, or interface elements from the previous screen. During a partial update, the display attempts to move ink particles only where the image changed. If that movement is incomplete, traces remain. BOOX explains that repeated taps can allow these remnants to accumulate until a full refresh resets more of the particles.

Color panels add another constraint. The display must drive several color states instead of changing only between dark and light particles, and those transitions use longer waveforms. E Ink’s published 2025 Gallery 3 specifications illustrate the trade-off:
| Gallery 3 update target | Published time | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Monochrome update | 350 ms | The shortest published target, for black-and-white content. |
| Fast color mode | 500 ms | Prioritizes responsiveness over the cleanest color transition. |
| Standard color mode | 750–1000 ms | Allows a slower transition for improved color quality. |
| Best-color mode | 1500 ms | Prioritizes the most complete color update at the cost of latency. |
These are E Ink’s 2025 Gallery 3 targets, not a promise that every reader, application, or page will update in exactly that time. Controller hardware, firmware, page layout, and the selected mode all affect what you see. A device using E Ink Kaleido has a different construction: a printed color-filter array sits over a Carta ink layer. Gallery 3 uses a four-particle color system. Both are designed for color content, but their controls and response characteristics are not interchangeable.

Choose a refresh mode by task
Fast mode for navigation and ordinary text
Start with the fastest mode that leaves letters and controls legible. Fast modes shorten the wait between taps and page turns, which is useful for books, menus, scrolling, and frequent navigation. Their abbreviated waveforms generally leave more residual artifacts, especially after several partial updates.
Quality mode for color-heavy pages
Use a slower quality-oriented mode for comics, illustrations, maps, charts, photographs, or pages with large areas of color. The longer waveform gives color particles more time to settle, so the image can look cleaner. Expect a longer page turn. Switch back to the fast setting when you return to text-driven navigation.
Full refresh as a reset, not a speed setting
A full refresh updates a larger portion of the panel and clears accumulated remnants. It normally produces a visible flash and takes longer than a partial update. That flash is the cost of resetting more particles; it is not evidence that the display is malfunctioning.
Step-by-step: reduce ghosting without making every page turn slow

Identify the current refresh mode
Open the reader’s display or refresh controls and note the active mode. Menu names differ by manufacturer and firmware. On BOOX devices, refresh controls are exposed per application. If the current setting is a high-quality color mode, test the fastest available mode first and turn a few pages containing ordinary text.

Keep the fastest mode that remains readable
Look at small type, punctuation, icons, and thin lines rather than only large headings. If they remain clear enough for your reading, keep that mode for routine navigation. If characters smear or contrast becomes distracting, move one step toward a slower quality setting. The correct choice is the fastest mode that does not interfere with the task.

Enable automatic full refresh for the app
Where the firmware provides it, enable Auto Full Refresh or the equivalent control. BOOX’s official instruction is: “First of all, make sure the ‘Full Refresh’ function is enabled for each app.” Because settings can be application-specific, enabling it in one reading app does not necessarily enable it in another.
-
Run a manual full refresh when artifacts build up
When you can see a persistent previous page, open the refresh controls and select Full Refresh. If remnants remain, BOOX advises running the Full Refresh control a few times. Allow each cycle to finish before judging the result; interrupting it with another tap can immediately introduce new partial-update artifacts.

Configure third-party apps separately
For a third-party application, test Speed mode first. BOOX specifically recommends Speed refresh mode as an efficient way to remove ghosting in such apps. If the screen still looks dirty, switch to a slower quality mode or trigger a full refresh. A setting that works well in the built-in reader may not suit a browser, PDF viewer, or drawing application because each app redraws the screen differently.

Use a quality mode only for demanding pages
When a page contains broad color fields or detailed artwork, select the slower quality option for that viewing session. After leaving the color-heavy content, return to the fast setting so normal page turns do not inherit the longer delay.
How often should you run a full refresh?
There is no universal “every N pages” interval. The need depends on the selected waveform, how many partial updates an application performs, and the content on screen. Use a full refresh when a remnant remains visible after a normal update, when several overlapping ghosts make text harder to read, or when an app’s interface has become visibly dirty. If the image is clean, forcing a full refresh after every tap only adds flashes and waiting time.
Automatic refresh is useful when you prefer the firmware to decide when accumulated artifacts justify a reset. Manual refresh is better when you want uninterrupted reading and are willing to tolerate a little residue between deliberate cleanups. Either approach still involves a visible flash when the full cycle runs.
Why a page turn can still feel slow after you change settings
The panel technology sets a lower bound
Longer color waveforms are a physical characteristic of the display family, not merely an app defect. Gallery 3’s 500 ms fast-color target is already slower than its 350 ms monochrome target, while standard and best-color targets extend to 750–1000 ms and 1500 ms. A firmware update can improve control and scheduling, but it cannot turn a color transition into an instantaneous monochrome one.

The page may require a more complex update
Large color areas, illustrations, and images require more color transitions than a page of black text. A device may therefore appear quick in a text-only book and slower in a comic or image-rich PDF even when the same mode is selected.
The application may override or expose different controls
Refresh controls are firmware-specific. One application may expose Speed and Full Refresh directly, while another may use different labels or inherit a global setting. Treat the labels shown on your device as authoritative and check the setting inside the app where the delay occurs.
How to compare color E Ink readers for ghosting and latency
Manufacturer timing claims are specifications, not guarantees for every page layout. When comparing two devices, evaluate the following evidence rather than relying on a single “fast” label:
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Fast-mode page-turn latency | What timing does the manufacturer publish, and for which display family? | Indicates responsiveness for ordinary navigation, but not necessarily image-heavy pages. |
| Quality-mode color time | How long does the slower color mode take? | Shows the delay you may accept for cleaner illustrations and large color areas. |
| Per-app refresh settings | Can each application select its own waveform or refresh behavior? | Different apps produce different amounts of residue; per-app control prevents one compromise from affecting everything. |
| Automatic full refresh | Is Auto Full Refresh available, and can it be enabled per app? | Automates cleanup when partial-update artifacts accumulate. |
| Manual refresh gesture or control | Can you trigger Full Refresh without leaving the current app? | A quick manual reset is valuable when a page becomes visibly dirty. |
| Text versus color resolution | Are black-and-white text detail and color detail specified separately? | Color-filter or multi-particle designs can present different detail levels for text and color imagery. |
| Firmware support | Does the manufacturer continue to expose and refine refresh controls? | Refresh behavior is controller- and firmware-dependent, so software support affects the practical experience. |
Practical settings for common reading situations
Novels and long-form text
Use the fastest mode that preserves small-letter clarity. Keep automatic full refresh enabled if you notice a gradual buildup during long sessions, and run a manual full refresh when a previous line or page remains obvious.

PDFs with diagrams and charts
Begin in fast mode for page navigation. When examining a chart or diagram, switch to a quality mode if color boundaries or labels look dirty. Return to fast mode after you finish inspecting the figure.
Comics, illustrations, and photographs
Favor a quality-oriented color mode because these pages contain broad and varied color regions. Accept the longer page turn as the trade-off for a cleaner image, and use a full refresh if several page transitions leave overlapping remnants.
Browsers and other third-party software
Set the application independently. Test Speed mode first, then move to a slower quality mode if ghosting remains objectionable. A manual Full Refresh is the fastest way to determine whether the residue is accumulated partial-update error or a persistent rendering problem.

- Ghost remains after one page turn: Trigger Full Refresh and wait for the flash and completion. If it clears, the cause was accumulated partial-update residue.
- Ghosting returns quickly: Confirm that Full Refresh or Auto Full Refresh is enabled for the specific app, then try a slower quality mode. Frequent partial updates can accumulate artifacts faster than a fast waveform can clear them.
- Text is clean but colors look muddy: Use the quality-oriented mode for that page. Fast color modes deliberately trade some transition quality for speed.
- Every page turn feels delayed: Check whether the app is locked to standard or best-color behavior. Return to the fastest legible mode for text navigation.
- Controls differ between apps: Treat this as a firmware or app-level difference, not proof that the panel is defective. Locate the refresh controls inside the application where the problem occurs.
- A full refresh flashes and still takes time: That behavior is expected. A full reset moves more particles and therefore cannot match the latency of a partial update.
What a refresh setting cannot fix
No current color E Ink setting can guarantee a perfectly clean image, zero flashing, and instantaneous page turns at the same time. Faster waveforms reduce delay but leave more residual artifacts; slower waveforms improve color transitions but increase waiting. Full refresh is the cleanup mechanism, not a way to remove the underlying physical trade-off.
The most reliable routine is therefore task-based: fast mode for text and navigation, quality mode for color-rich content, automatic full refresh where available, and a manual full refresh whenever accumulated ghosts become distracting. Because user-facing labels and timing vary by controller and firmware, follow the controls provided by your device rather than assuming that another reader’s menu or measured speed will match yours.
