What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Use the refresh mode that matches what you are doing, then run a Full Refresh when remnants build up. On a BOOX device, HD mode is intended for static reading and crisp text, Speed mode favors scrolling and other changing content, and Regal can reduce ghosting while retaining visual quality where your model and app support it. Open these controls by swiping down from the top-right corner, tapping EinkWise, and selecting the appropriate mode. If faint text or images remain, invoke Full Refresh from Control Center or the Navigation Ball. In NeoReader, you can also adjust the refresh rate and full-refresh interval.
Ghosting is normally an E Ink behavior, not proof that the panel is damaged. BOOX describes it as faint remnants of earlier text or images that remain visible after a refresh. The aim is to control how often and how completely the display refreshes, not to promise that every trace will disappear after every page turn.

What ghosting means on a BOOX screen
Ghosting is the pale outline of content that was displayed previously: a line of text after turning a page, a toolbar left behind after closing an app, or a gray image remnant after scrolling. BOOX’s Help Center describes ghosting as “faint remnants of previous content, like text or images, remain visible after the screen refreshes.” It also calls this a normal aspect of E Ink technology.

A partial refresh changes only some of the screen, which is faster but can leave a small amount of the preceding image. A full refresh updates the display more completely and is the normal way to clear accumulated remnants. The visible result depends on the device, firmware, app, content and the refresh mode selected for that app.

Ghosting is usually harmless when it disappears after a Full Refresh. A recurring abnormality is different: if a mark remains after a full refresh, appears when no related content was shown, or is present regardless of the app or page, the built-in settings guidance does not establish a hardware diagnosis. In that situation, contact BOOX support rather than assuming a particular component has failed.
Choose a refresh mode for the task
Refresh modes trade image quality against update speed. BOOX’s general guidance places HD toward the quality end and Speed toward the responsiveness end. Regal is described separately as a way to reduce ghosting while preserving visual quality in supported situations. Some generations also expose a model-specific Smooth option. Names, availability and behavior can differ by device, app and firmware, so use the choices actually shown on your BOOX.
| Mode | Best fit | What to expect | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| HD | Static reading, novels, documents and crisp text | Highest visual quality among the modes BOOX compares, with slower updates than speed-focused modes | BOOX’s general comparison; exact behavior varies by model and firmware |
| Speed | Scrolling, animated or frequently changing content, and many third-party apps | Faster screen updates, with a greater chance of visible residual images | BOOX specifically suggests Speed for ghosting in third-party apps on color devices; it is a recommendation, not a universal fix |
| Regal | General reading or material with images and color, where supported | Designed to reduce ghosting while retaining visual quality | Not present on every device or in every app |
| Smooth | Dynamic use on models that provide this option | A model-specific faster-use profile | Do not treat it as a universal BOOX mode; availability and ranking differ by generation |
Use HD for mostly static pages
Start with HD when you are reading a novel, a conventional PDF page or a web page that stays still. It prioritizes a clean text image. If you notice a remnant after several page turns, a manual Full Refresh is more useful than changing permanently to a faster mode.

Scrolling through a long web page, moving around a large PDF, typing, or using an app with frequent redraws can make HD feel sluggish. Speed is intended for this type of dynamic content. Accept that partial updates may leave more visible trails and plan to run a Full Refresh when you stop scrolling.
Try Regal or a model-specific option when available
Regal can be a useful middle choice for general reading and image-rich material on devices that offer it. If your BOOX includes Smooth, treat it as a device-specific dynamic mode. BOOX cautions through its separate mode guidance that comparisons between generations should not be combined into one universal ranking.
Open EinkWise and change the mode
- Swipe down from the top-right edge of the screen to open Control Center.
- Tap EinkWise.
- Choose the mode that matches the current task: HD for static clarity, Speed for motion and scrolling, or another mode available for your model.
- Return to the app and check a representative page or scroll operation. If the app still leaves remnants, continue with the app-specific controls and a Full Refresh.
BOOX also documents access through a gesture or the Navigation Bar. Gesture defaults and the labels shown on screen can vary, so the path on your device may not look exactly like the sequence above. Refresh settings can be configured per app; a mode that works well in NeoReader does not necessarily apply to a third-party reader or browser.
Run a Full Refresh when remnants accumulate
A Full Refresh is the direct way to clear ordinary accumulated ghosting. BOOX documents more than one entry point:

- Dark, gray, or wrongfully believed low resolution screen : All Eink products used Kaleido 3 color e-ink technology, which currently has inherent limitations and share the same darker or grayer screen than LCD/LED ones. This is a characteristic of all e-ink products, not a defect. If it doesn't meet your expectations, you may return the product under our return policy. However, please note this is not considered a product fault.
- Over 99% of mobile apps are optimized for LCD/OLED screens with: High refresh rate expectations; Color-rich interfaces; Animation-heavy designs; These design choices conflict with E Ink's natural strengths in static content display.Energy Efficiency Trade-off: E Ink relies on electrophoretic particles that physically move to form images, resulting in slower refresh rates, makes it inherently unsuitable for conventional app interfaces designed for always-powered displays. If the buyers are not satisfied, they can apply for return or exchange, but it cannot be regarded as a malfunction.
- Open Control Center and choose the Full Refresh control.
- Open the Navigation Ball and select Full Refresh.
- If your device exposes a gesture or Navigation Bar customization for it, assign Full Refresh to that shortcut.
The exact icon and location depend on the model and firmware. If you cannot find the control, inspect the expanded Control Center and Navigation Ball settings rather than assuming the feature is absent.
Turn on Auto Full Refresh when the setting exists
BOOX’s general ghosting guidance recommends enabling Auto Full Refresh after you select a refresh mode, when that setting is available. This lets the device perform a complete refresh at the configured interval instead of leaving every cleanup to you. It does not guarantee that no faint remnants will ever appear; it controls how often the display receives a complete update.
When to use a manual refresh
Use one after a long scroll, after closing an app that left its controls on screen, or whenever a previous page remains distracting. A Full Refresh is also a useful diagnostic step: ordinary residual ghosting should clear. If the same mark remains afterward, record which app and content produced it and contact BOOX support.
Adjust NeoReader’s refresh behavior
NeoReader exposes more detailed controls than the general system panel. To reach them:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open a document in NeoReader.
- Tap the center of the page to reveal the reading controls.
- Open the top-right menu.
- Choose Refresh.
Depending on the device, the Refresh panel includes page refresh mode, refresh rate, deep full-refresh and drag-to-refresh controls.
Page refresh mode
Choose the mode according to the document’s behavior. A text-heavy book that changes one page at a time can use a quality-oriented setting. A document you pan, zoom or scroll repeatedly may need a faster setting, followed by a full refresh when you finish navigating.
Refresh rate
The refresh rate determines how many interactions can occur before the reader performs a more complete update. BOOX notes that allowing more taps between full refreshes can let more ghosting accumulate. If clarity matters more than reducing interruptions, shorten the interval so a full refresh happens more often. If you are browsing quickly and can tolerate remnants temporarily, a longer interval reduces the number of complete refreshes.

Deep full-refresh
Enable the deep full-refresh behavior when ordinary page updates are not keeping the document clean. Because this setting changes how aggressively NeoReader refreshes, expect more complete updates while navigating. Use it for the document or activity that needs it rather than assuming every app will inherit the choice.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

For documents that you pan or drag, the drag-to-refresh option can determine how the screen updates during movement. If dragging leaves a trail, test a faster mode first; if the trail remains after you stop, perform a Full Refresh and adjust the interval in the same Refresh panel.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Reduce ghosting in color devices and third-party apps
Color BOOX models and third-party apps can expose different controls from NeoReader. BOOX advises enabling Full Refresh for apps where that option is provided. It also suggests trying Speed mode for third-party applications when ghosting is a problem. This is a vendor recommendation, not a setting that behaves identically in every app.
Apply settings to the problem app
- Open the app that shows the artifacts.
- Swipe down from the top-right and open EinkWise.
- Look for the app-specific refresh or Full Refresh option and enable it if present.
- For a scrolling or frequently changing app, test Speed mode.
- Run a manual Full Refresh after changing the setting, then repeat the same action that produced the remnants.
Some apps provide their own display controls, while others rely entirely on the system profile. If a control described in a guide is missing, that usually reflects a model, firmware or app difference rather than an incorrect tap.
Match the fix to the symptom
| Symptom | What to try first | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Faint text remains after an occasional page turn | Run a manual Full Refresh | This is the normal cleanup for accumulated residual content |
| Trails appear while scrolling | Switch the active app to Speed mode, then refresh after scrolling | Speed is intended for dynamic updates; a complete refresh clears the session’s remnants |
| Ghosting increases during a long NeoReader session | Shorten the refresh interval or enable deep full-refresh | BOOX notes that more taps between full refreshes can allow more remnants to build up |
| A color or third-party app leaves its interface behind | Enable Full Refresh for apps if available; test Speed mode | These are BOOX’s stated recommendations for that category of use |
| The same mark remains after a Full Refresh | Repeat once with the content closed, then contact BOOX support if it persists | The documented settings address normal ghosting, not a confirmed hardware fault |
| The expected mode or control is missing | Check the device’s current firmware, app-specific menu and Navigation Bar or gesture settings | BOOX says controls and supported modes vary by model, app and firmware |
A practical setup for common activities
Novels and mostly static documents
- Select HD in EinkWise.
- Leave Auto Full Refresh enabled if your device offers it.
- Use a manual Full Refresh when a remnant becomes distracting rather than changing the mode for every page.
Long web pages and scrolling documents
- Select Speed before you begin moving through the page.
- Stop scrolling periodically and run Full Refresh if trails build up.
- Return to HD or Regal for close reading when the page becomes static, if those modes are available.
NeoReader books with frequent navigation
- Open the Refresh panel from the center tap and top-right menu.
- Choose a suitable page refresh mode.
- Shorten the refresh rate interval or enable deep full-refresh when repeated navigation leaves remnants.
Color screens and unfamiliar apps
- Check whether the app has a Full Refresh setting.
- Test Speed for an app with constant redraws, following BOOX’s recommendation.
- Use the device’s own controls as the authority; a setting documented for one model may not exist on another.
When ghosting points beyond normal refresh behavior
Normal ghosting is content-related and clears with a complete refresh. A persistent mark that survives Full Refresh, appears without a corresponding earlier image, or follows you across unrelated apps is not explained by the ordinary refresh-mode guidance. BOOX’s documentation does not provide a hardware-fault diagnosis procedure for that case. Note the device model, firmware, app, content and steps that reproduce the mark, then contact BOOX support for model-specific help.
How BOOX firmware and model differences affect the instructions
BOOX’s refresh-mode material includes a Firmware V4.1 context, but the available controls are not guaranteed to be identical across all releases. A monochrome reader, a color model and a third-party app can each show a different set of modes. Menu names may also move between Control Center, Navigation Ball, Navigation Bar and an app’s own settings.
Use the principles consistently: quality-oriented modes for static content, speed-oriented modes for dynamic content, and Full Refresh for accumulated remnants. Then follow the labels visible on your device instead of forcing a path intended for another generation.
Bottom line
Ghosting on a BOOX screen is usually a normal E Ink artifact. Start with HD for static reading, Speed for scrolling, and Regal or another supported mode when it offers a better balance for your device. Open EinkWise from the top-right Control Center, use Auto Full Refresh when available, and invoke Full Refresh whenever remnants accumulate. In NeoReader, control the refresh rate and deep full-refresh interval. If a mark survives a complete refresh, treat it as a support issue rather than an ordinary mode-selection problem.
