How to Reduce Ghosting and Input Lag on an E‑Ink Gaming Device

Use the fastest refresh mode your E‑ink device offers for the specific game, then trigger a full refresh when trails become distracting. Disable optional motion effects, and judge the result in the game you actually play: faster updates can feel more responsive while leaving more residual images, and the panel’s visible refresh is only one part of total input-to-image latency.

What to change first

Start with settings, not hardware. Identify the exact E‑ink model, operating system, firmware and game, then locate that device’s per-app display controls. Select its fastest available refresh mode and test the same moving scene before and after the change. If response feels better but trails become intrusive, keep the faster mode for action and invoke a full refresh when the residue interferes with reading the screen. Turn off optional transitions or motion effects inside the game when those controls exist.

Menu names and available modes differ by manufacturer and software version. The BOOX instructions linked below are examples for BOOX devices; they are not universal E‑ink steps. A device that does not expose a mode to a particular game cannot be tuned through that game’s settings alone.

Ghosting and input lag are different problems

Ghosting is a visible remnant

Ghosting is leftover content from an earlier frame that remains visible after the screen updates. BOOX describes it as residue that accumulates while the device performs actions between full refreshes. That behavior is normal for electrophoretic displays and, by itself, does not show that the panel is defective. See the vendor’s Display Settings guidance.

Input lag is delayed visual feedback

Input lag is the time between a button, touch or controller action and the updated image that confirms it. The panel’s refresh interval is only one component. Processing, the display controller, waveform selection, update scheduling, buffering and the game’s own rendering pipeline can all add delay. The Glider project explains why refresh speed should not be treated as the same thing as total update latency: Modos Labs’ technical documentation.

Consequently, a mode that appears cleaner in a static menu may feel slower in a moving game, while a fast mode may improve response but produce trails. Evaluate both symptoms separately rather than assuming that a full refresh will solve every delay.

What the refresh setting is actually changing

An E‑ink system can update only part of the image for speed, or redraw the whole display for a cleaner result. Partial updates are useful during movement because they avoid redrawing unchanged areas, but repeated partial updates can leave residue. A full update replaces that accumulated image more thoroughly, at the cost of a longer redraw and often a visible flash. Microchip’s ePaper guidance describes this partial-versus-full trade-off and notes that waveform behavior and update choices influence ghosting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Refresh modes are therefore not a simple quality slider. They are different compromises among update speed, image quality, artifact level and power use. A mode that works well for scrolling text may be unsuitable for a game with constant motion, and a setting that is acceptable in a monochrome title may not behave the same way in a color E‑ink app. BOOX publishes separate help for optimizing ghosting in color E‑ink applications, which is a reminder to use the instructions for the exact software and panel rather than assuming one profile fits every app.

Find the controls that actually apply to your game

  1. Record the setup. Note the device model, operating-system and firmware versions, game version, input method and whether the game is native or sideloaded. These details matter because vendors can expose different controls to native and third-party applications.
  2. Open the display or refresh settings. Look for per-app refresh, refresh frequency, waveform or similar controls. If the game has its own graphics menu, inspect it too. Do not copy a menu path from another brand or model.
  3. Check whether the setting is app-specific. BOOX states that refresh behavior can vary between applications. Its Refresh Settings and Refresh Modes documentation show the type of controls available on its software, but the labels and placement can change with version.
  4. Close and reopen the game after changing a mode. Some systems apply a refresh policy only when an app starts. If the setting has no visible effect, verify that it is assigned to the correct app and that the game is not running through a separate launcher or compatibility layer.

Keep native and third-party behavior separate

A vendor’s own reader, launcher and settings screens may use a different display path from a sideloaded game. A mode visible in one app can be unavailable or ignored in another. Test the game itself, not just a menu that looks smoother. If a profile is tied to an installed package, check that it points to the exact game package rather than a launcher, shortcut or streaming client.

After a firmware or game update, revisit the profile. Updates can reset per-app choices or alter which modes are exposed. Record the working mode and the date you tested it; that makes it easier to restore a known setup without assuming that a new version behaves like the old one.

Choose a refresh mode for playability

Refresh modes are compromises between update speed, image quality and artifacts. Use the quickest mode that keeps game elements understandable in motion, then decide whether the resulting ghosting is acceptable.

What to compare What to observe How to decide
Responsiveness How quickly a character, cursor or menu reacts after your input in the same scene Prefer the mode that gives clearly earlier visual feedback without making the game unreadable
Residual ghosting Trails, previous text or sprites remaining after movement Accept more residue only if it does not hide the next action or target
Clarity Sharpness and contrast of small text, icons and fine game details Use a clearer mode for strategy, inventory or reading-heavy sections
Full-refresh cost Delay, visible flash and possible additional energy use when the whole screen is redrawn Reserve full refreshes for disruptive residue rather than using them after every input
Compatibility Whether the selected mode is honored by this game and input path Keep a per-game setting if the device supports one; otherwise use the mode that works consistently

No controlled, game-specific measurements establish a universal fastest mode or a particular latency figure. Treat the comparison as a repeatable user adjustment, not as a benchmark.

A repeatable two-minute test

  1. Choose a scene with continuous motion and a predictable input, such as moving a cursor across a map or turning a character.
  2. Play for at least a minute in the current mode and note when visual feedback appears, whether trails obscure objects and whether text remains legible.
  3. Switch to the next faster available mode, reload the same scene and repeat the identical input.
  4. Write down three separate observations: response feel, residue and clarity. A mode that improves one category while damaging another is a trade-off, not a failure.
  5. Repeat after the device has warmed up and after background apps are closed, so processing load is comparable. Do not turn these observations into a claimed millisecond result.

For a useful comparison, change one variable at a time. Keep the same brightness, game scene, input action and viewing angle. If you switch refresh mode and animation settings simultaneously, you will not know which change affected the result. A short written log is more reliable than memory, especially when the difference is subtle.

Reduce motion and animation in software

Every transition, particle effect or animated overlay creates more changing content for an E‑ink display to update. If the game offers options such as animated menus, screen transitions, camera shake or other motion effects, disable the effects that are not essential to play. Keep a note of each change so you can restore it if it makes the interface harder to understand.

Controls are app-specific. Readwise, for example, documents a Reduce motion option for its own E‑ink reader experience at Using Reader on e‑ink devices. That documentation does not establish that every game or operating system provides the same switch. If no motion control exists, do not install an unrelated utility or change hidden system parameters without model-specific instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reducing motion can lower the amount of changing content, but it is not a guaranteed cure for input latency. The game may still render at the same cadence, and the display controller may still buffer frames. Judge the setting by whether it makes targets easier to follow and feedback easier to see, not by assuming it changes a particular number of milliseconds.

Use a full refresh as a cleanup operation

A full refresh redraws the whole screen and can remove accumulated residue more thoroughly than repeated partial updates. It is not a free speed boost: a complete update generally takes longer, may visibly flash, and can use more energy. Microchip’s ePaper guidance describes the partial-versus-full refresh trade-off and the factors that influence ghosting: ePaper GUI Development Using MGS.

When to trigger it

  • Use it when old sprites, text or menu elements make the current game state difficult to read.
  • Use it after switching between a fast mode and a clarity-oriented mode if residue persists.
  • Use it after leaving a game with a large static image on screen, before starting a detail-sensitive section.
  • Use it after a long session of partial updates if the display has accumulated enough residue to hide small text or icons.

How to trigger it safely

Use the manual or deeper full-refresh control supplied by the device or app. On BOOX, the vendor documents refresh-frequency and manual/deeper full-refresh controls in its Refresh Settings instructions and app-specific steps in its color E‑ink ghosting guidance. Other manufacturers may place the command in a quick panel, an app profile or a hardware-button menu.

Do not promise yourself a universal refresh interval. The right frequency depends on the game’s update pattern, the selected mode and how much residue you can tolerate. Frequent full refreshes can interrupt play more than they help; waiting until artifacts interfere is usually the less disruptive approach.

A full refresh is best treated as maintenance during play, not as something to invoke after every button press. If the flash itself makes timing difficult, use the fastest mode for the active sequence, finish the sequence, then refresh during a pause, menu transition or other safe point.

Reduce other sources of delay before blaming the panel

Lower processing load

Close background apps, overlays and downloads that compete with the game for CPU or memory. Disable nonessential notifications while testing. These changes do not alter the E‑ink waveform, but they can prevent the game from submitting frames late.

Check the input path

Compare touch input with the device’s supported physical controller or keyboard, if available, using the same in-game action. A wireless link, a hub or an input remapper can add delay before the device receives the event. The available material does not identify a universally compatible controller, so use only hardware documented for your model.

Check buffering and output architecture

If a faster refresh mode changes ghosting but not the perceived delay, the bottleneck may be frame buffering, scheduling, controller design or waveform tuning rather than the visible panel update. Glider’s architecture discussion covers these layers at a technical level. Changing firmware, waveform tables or low-level driving parameters without instructions for the exact panel can cause unstable updates or damage; leave those changes to the manufacturer’s supported software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not infer the bottleneck from one symptom. A clean screen with late feedback suggests that delay may occur before the final panel update. A quick response with heavy trails suggests that the display is updating rapidly but not clearing previous content. These are different observations and call for different settings.

A troubleshooting path for common symptoms

The game responds faster, but trails are worse

Keep the fast mode only for scenes where response matters, then switch to a clearer mode for menus or reading if the device permits per-app or quick-toggle profiles. Trigger a full refresh when trails obscure targets. This is the expected speed-versus-artifact trade-off, not proof that the setting is malfunctioning.

The screen is clean, but controls still feel delayed

Test with background apps closed and compare input methods. Confirm that the game is not applying its own frame cap, transition effects or remote-streaming layer. If the delay remains unchanged across refresh modes, investigate processing, buffering and controller paths; a full refresh cannot remove latency that occurs before the panel update.

A selected mode does nothing

Confirm that the profile is attached to the exact installed package, that the game was restarted and that the device permits third-party apps to use that mode. Vendor documentation notes application-to-application variation. If the control is absent, record the limitation rather than forcing an unsupported setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ghosting appears suddenly after an update

Check whether the firmware or game reset its per-app profile or changed the default refresh policy. Reapply the supported mode, perform one manual full refresh and retest the same scene. If artifacts persist in every app, document the software versions and contact the device maker; do not assume a panel fault from one game alone.

Full refresh flashes too often

Disable any automatic or high-frequency full-refresh option if the device exposes one, then use manual refresh only when residue affects legibility. A flash is an inherent consequence of a complete redraw on many E‑ink panels, not a sign that you selected the wrong game.

Only one game looks bad

Compare that title with a native app and another game. If the problem is isolated, inspect its per-app profile, animation settings and rendering path before changing system-wide settings. Application variation is expected, so one troublesome title does not establish that the panel is failing.

How to compare modes or devices without misleading numbers

When choosing between settings, firmware versions or different E‑ink devices, use the same game, scene, input and observation period. Record the date and software versions. Compare the following dimensions rather than publishing an unsupported latency ranking:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Dimension Evidence you can collect What cannot be generalized
Responsiveness Consistent earlier or later visual feedback in your repeated input test A universal millisecond value for all games or devices
Ghosting and clarity Photographs or written observations of trails and readability in the same scene That one mode will be cleanest for every panel, color layer or app
Full-refresh behavior Whether the command is available, how disruptive the flash is and how long play is interrupted A single recommended refresh interval
Compatibility Whether the game honors the profile and whether settings survive a restart That another brand uses the same menu names or waveform behavior

The available documentation does not provide a controlled head-to-head test of a particular gaming device and game. Avoid ranking products or claiming a measured input-lag figure unless you have dated, model-specific evidence.

If you publish or share your own results, include the exact model, firmware, game version, refresh mode, input device and test scene. State whether the result is a visual observation or an instrumented measurement. That context prevents a setting that works on one panel from being mistaken for a universal E‑ink recommendation.

What not to do

  • Do not treat ghosting alone as proof that the screen is broken.
  • Do not apply BOOX menu instructions to another manufacturer’s device without checking its manual.
  • Do not promise that a full refresh makes controls faster; it primarily clears residue and adds a redraw cost.
  • Do not alter hidden waveform, firmware or controller parameters without exact manufacturer guidance.
  • Do not buy a generic monitor, controller or repair part on the assumption that it will reduce E‑ink ghosting; compatibility evidence is required.
  • Do not claim a latency number from a stopwatch or subjective impression; the display path includes several stages beyond the visible refresh.
  • Do not run constant full refreshes simply to chase a perfectly clean image if the interruptions make the game less playable.

A practical profile for play

For a fast-moving game, begin with the quickest supported mode, disable nonessential animation and keep a manual full-refresh command easy to reach. For a turn-based or text-heavy game, favor the clearer mode and refresh only when old content interferes. If neither profile changes perceived delay, focus on the game’s processing and input path rather than repeatedly refreshing the panel.

Because E‑ink hardware and software vary widely, the most reliable result is a documented per-game profile: mode selected, motion options changed, full-refresh trigger and the conditions under which you switch back. That record lets you restore a working setup after a firmware or game update without assuming that another model behaves the same way.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Quick checklist

  1. Write down the model, firmware, game version and input method.
  2. Find the device’s supported per-app refresh controls.
  3. Test the fastest mode in a repeatable moving scene.
  4. Record response feel, trails and clarity separately.
  5. Disable optional animation or motion effects that the game actually exposes.
  6. Use a manual full refresh when residue hides information, accepting the delay and flash.
  7. Compare another input method and close competing apps if controls still feel late.
  8. Recheck the profile after updates and avoid unsupported low-level tweaks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the fastest refresh mode always the best choice for gaming?

No. It can improve perceived responsiveness while leaving more ghosting or reducing clarity. Use it when the game remains readable, then switch to a clearer mode for menus, text or detail-sensitive scenes.

How often should I perform a full refresh?

There is no universal interval. Refresh when residue interferes with legibility, after a long sequence of partial updates, or when switching to a clarity-oriented section. Frequent full refreshes add delay, flashes and possible energy use.

Will a full refresh reduce input lag?

It mainly clears residual image content. It cannot remove delay caused by processing, buffering, input links, controller scheduling or the game’s rendering pipeline.

Why do BOOX instructions not match my device?

Refresh menus and modes are manufacturer-, model- and software-specific. BOOX help applies to BOOX software; another brand may place controls elsewhere or expose fewer options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can reducing motion fix every game’s lag?

Only if the game or app provides motion controls and the effects are contributing to the problem. A documented Reduce motion switch in Readwise is an app-specific example, not a universal operating-system feature.

Is ghosting evidence that my E‑ink panel is defective?

Not by itself. BOOX describes residue between full refreshes as normal display behavior. If artifacts persist across every app after supported refresh steps, document versions and contact the manufacturer.

Should I buy a special controller or monitor to solve the problem?

No universal accessory is established for this issue. Use only hardware documented as compatible with your exact device; settings and software changes are the supported first steps.

Can I tune waveform tables or hidden firmware settings?

Do not do so without exact manufacturer guidance. Waveform tuning and controller parameters affect the display path, and unsupported changes can produce unstable updates or damage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I compare two devices fairly?

Use the same game, scene, input, observation period and software-version record. Compare responsiveness, ghosting, clarity, full-refresh disruption and compatibility, but do not claim a universal latency number without dated, model-specific measurement.

The Bottom Line

Choose the fastest refresh mode your particular game actually honors, reduce optional motion, and use full refreshes as occasional cleanup rather than a speed setting. Keep ghosting and input lag separate: trails are residual image content, while delay can arise anywhere from the input and game pipeline through buffering, controller scheduling and waveform updates. Test one change at a time, record the working per-game profile, and avoid unsupported firmware or hardware fixes.
