How to Reduce Ghosting and Black Smearing on the Samsung Odyssey G5

Black smearing on the Samsung Odyssey G5 is primarily a VA-panel limitation: dark pixels can take much longer to change into nearby grey shades than bright pixels take to switch. You can reduce the visible trails by using the monitor’s highest stable refresh rate, selecting its native resolution, and testing the middle overdrive setting, usually Faster. Adaptive-Sync/FreeSync and MPRT can improve one part of the image while making another part worse, so compare them with the game and frame-rate range you actually use. If slow dark transitions remain distracting after those tests, no cable, driver update or single OSD preset can remove the limitation; a faster-response IPS gaming monitor is the practical hardware solution.

What ghosting and black smearing look like on an Odyssey G5

Ghosting is a trail behind a moving object because the previous pixel state has not finished changing before the object moves on. Black smearing is the particularly visible form that occurs during dark-to-dark or dark-to-grey transitions. In a dark game, a black character crossing a grey wall may leave a charcoal ribbon; a bright nameplate moving across a dark background may appear to drag a dark shadow behind it.

The Odyssey G5 family uses VA panels. VA technology can produce strong contrast, but its slowest transitions are often in the darkest shades. TFT Central measured black-to-grey transitions as slow as approximately 38 milliseconds on a related Samsung VA gaming panel in a 2020 review. That is an illustration of the panel class, not a measurement of every G5 model. RTINGS described the Samsung Odyssey G55C as having a bad response time at any refresh rate. In other words, settings can manage the symptom, but they cannot make every dark transition as fast as the refresh rate suggests.

Refresh rate and pixel response are different measurements. A monitor running at 165 Hz presents a new scan roughly every 6.06 ms, but a pixel that needs substantially longer to reach its target shade can still be changing when the next frame arrives. That is why a high refresh rate does not guarantee a clean image on a VA display.

Identify the exact G5 model before changing settings

Samsung has sold multiple Odyssey G5 revisions. Their menu labels, maximum refresh rates and MPRT restrictions are not identical. Read the model code on the rear label or open the monitor’s Information menu before you start. Examples include C27G55T, S27CG55, S32CG55, S27AG55 and S27CG51.

Model information listed in Samsung documentation Refresh-rate detail What it means for setup
S27CG55 or S32CG55 over DisplayPort 60, 120, 144 or 165 Hz listed; 165 Hz maximum Use 165 Hz only if the connection and system remain stable.
S27CG55 or S32CG55 over HDMI 60, 120 or 144 Hz listed; 144 Hz maximum HDMI cannot provide the 165 Hz mode on these models according to Samsung’s 2024-era user guide.
Other G5 codes such as C27G55T, S27AG55 or S27CG51 No refresh-rate limit was published in the available documentation Check the manual for that exact code rather than assuming another G5’s limit.

Record your current resolution, refresh rate, Adaptive-Sync state, Response Time mode and MPRT state. Make one change at a time, because changing several settings together makes it impossible to tell which trade-off helped.

Set the correct resolution and refresh rate first

Use the panel’s native or recommended resolution. A non-native resolution can add scaling softness that looks like blur even when it is not pixel-response ghosting. Then select the highest refresh rate that is stable through the input you are using.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open your operating system’s display settings or the graphics control panel.
  2. Select the Odyssey G5 and choose its native/recommended resolution.
  3. Choose the highest refresh rate shown for that resolution and input.
  4. Apply the setting, then confirm that the image remains stable for several minutes in a game or moving test scene.

For the S27CG55 and S32CG55, Samsung’s guide lists up to 165 Hz through DisplayPort and up to 144 Hz through HDMI. Do not interpret the 165 Hz figure as a promise that every G5 reaches it over every cable or at every resolution. If the screen blanks, shows sparkles or repeatedly reconnects, step down to the next stable refresh rate.

Choose the Response Time overdrive setting

The Response Time control changes the amount of pixel overdrive. Overdrive applies a stronger voltage so a pixel reaches its target sooner, but too much can make it overshoot. Overshoot appears as a bright or dark halo, often called inverse ghosting.

OSD setting Typical result When to try it
Standard Gentler overdrive, usually more ordinary trailing and blur. Use it when Faster or Fastest creates obvious halos, or when your specific model behaves poorly at a low refresh rate.
Faster Usually the best balance between reducing trails and limiting overshoot. Start here. DisplayNinja found Standard too slow and Fastest too aggressive on a tested G5, recommending Faster across the tested refresh range.
Fastest More aggressive overdrive; may reduce some trailing but add inverse ghosting. Test briefly in the scene that exposes the problem. Keep it only if halos are not more distracting than the original trail.

How to test each mode

  1. Open the monitor’s Game menu and set Response Time to Faster, if that option exists.
  2. Use a dark game scene with lateral camera movement, or a moving test pattern containing black, grey and white objects.
  3. Look behind dark objects for a long grey trail. Then look immediately in front of high-contrast edges for a bright or dark halo.
  4. If the halo is prominent, move down to Standard. If the trail remains long and no halo is visible, compare Fastest for the same scene.
  5. Keep the least objectionable result at the refresh rate you actually use, not the mode that looks best in a static desktop image.

Overdrive behavior can change with refresh rate. A mode that looks acceptable at 165 Hz may overshoot at 60 Hz, and a mode that is clean at one frame rate may be less balanced when frame rate fluctuates. Repeat the check at the low and high ends of your normal gaming range.

Test Adaptive-Sync or FreeSync as a separate trade-off

Adaptive-Sync, including FreeSync implementations, matches the monitor’s scan timing to the graphics card’s frame delivery. Samsung describes Adaptive-Sync as eliminating tearing without the usual lag and latency. That benefit is real, but some G5 variants use a different overdrive behavior while variable refresh is active. In testing, that VRR behavior can be less favorable for motion than the fixed-refresh mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Controlled VRR comparison

  1. With Adaptive-Sync enabled in the monitor and graphics settings, play the same dark scene. Note tearing, stutter, and the length of dark trails at your usual frame rates.
  2. Disable Adaptive-Sync, keep the same resolution and refresh rate, and select Response Time Faster if it becomes available.
  3. Repeat the same camera movement and compare dark trails and halos. Do not change the game’s graphics settings between passes.
  4. Use VRR when tear-free motion and reduced stutter matter more than a modest reduction in trailing. Use fixed refresh only when the reduction in smearing is clearly worth occasional tearing or uneven frame pacing.

There is no universal “FreeSync off” answer. The useful comparison is the one made at your actual frame-rate range. If your frame rate frequently moves from near the refresh ceiling to much lower values, VRR may provide a better overall experience even if its overdrive response is not perfect.

Understand what MPRT or Extreme mode can and cannot do

Some Odyssey G5 menus call the backlight-strobing option MPRT; other firmware uses a name such as Extreme. It is a form of motion-blur reduction (MBR), not a faster pixel-response technology. The backlight flashes briefly while each frame is displayed, reducing the time your eyes see a moving frame and therefore reducing perceived blur.

Strobing has strict operating conditions. It may require a fixed refresh rate, may be unavailable with Adaptive-Sync, and can be limited to particular refresh-rate modes by the model. It also lowers brightness and can reveal duplicated images or remaining dark trails when pixel transitions are still incomplete.

How to evaluate MPRT

  1. First establish a stable fixed refresh rate that your model permits for MPRT.
  2. Enable MPRT/Extreme in the Game menu and allow your eyes a few seconds to adapt to the lower brightness.
  3. Pan the camera slowly and quickly through the same dark scene used for the Response Time test.
  4. Disable it if the dimmer image, flicker-like sensation, double images or residual trails are more distracting than ordinary blur.

MPRT can make a moving object look sharper while leaving the underlying black-to-grey transition unchanged. It is optional, not a cure for VA smearing, and it is often unsuitable if you need variable refresh or a bright desktop.

Use Black Equalizer only for visibility

Black Equalizer changes the brightness of dark areas. Raising it can make enemies or details easier to see in a shadowy level, but it does not accelerate a pixel transition. It can also wash out contrast and make a trail easier to notice against a lifted background. Set it for visibility and preference, not as a response-time fix.

Why common “fixes” do not remove black smearing

  • A different cable: A cable that cannot carry your chosen refresh rate can cause instability or force a lower mode, but a compliant connection does not change the panel’s dark-transition speed.
  • A graphics-driver update: Drivers can fix compatibility, VRR and frame-pacing problems. They do not rewrite the monitor’s pixel-response characteristics.
  • Increasing Black Equalizer: It changes dark-area luminance rather than the time needed for a pixel to reach its target.
  • One universal preset: G5 revisions and refresh-rate ranges behave differently. Faster is a sensible starting point, not a guaranteed optimum for every unit.
  • Relying on input-lag figures: DisplayNinja reported approximately 4 ms of input lag for a tested G5. Input lag measures the delay before the monitor displays a signal; it is not pixel response time and does not prove that dark smearing is absent.

Troubleshoot by symptom

Long grey or black trails with no bright halo

Confirm native resolution and the highest stable refresh rate, then compare Faster with Fastest. If the trail remains long in both modes, test fixed refresh without Adaptive-Sync. Persistent dark trails after these checks are consistent with the VA panel’s slow dark transitions.

Bright outlines or dark halos around moving objects

This is inverse ghosting from excessive overdrive. Change Fastest to Faster, or Faster to Standard, and repeat the test at the refresh rate you use. A lower mode that leaves a little ordinary blur is often preferable to a conspicuous halo.

Smearing is worse when FreeSync is enabled

Run the controlled VRR comparison above. Some variants apply a separate VRR overdrive curve. Keep VRR if it prevents tearing and stutter that you find more distracting; otherwise, fixed refresh with Faster may be the cleaner choice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MPRT looks dim, flickery or doubled

Disable MPRT/Extreme and return to a normal overdrive mode. Check whether the model requires a particular refresh rate or fixed-refresh operation before trying it again. Double images indicate that strobing is exposing incomplete pixel transitions or timing crosstalk, not that the panel has become faster.

The monitor will not hold the selected refresh rate

Verify the model’s input limit, resolution and connection. On S27CG55 and S32CG55, Samsung’s guide lists 165 Hz through DisplayPort but only 144 Hz through HDMI. Reduce the refresh rate until the display is stable, then retest Response Time at that rate.

A repeatable setup procedure

Use this sequence whenever you change a game, graphics card or connection:

  1. Write down the exact model code and current firmware or menu labels.
  2. Select native/recommended resolution and the highest stable refresh rate for the input.
  3. Turn off MPRT/Extreme temporarily so you are evaluating ordinary pixel response.
  4. Set Response Time to Faster.
  5. Run a dark, moving scene for several minutes and note ordinary trails and inverse-ghosting halos separately.
  6. Compare Standard and Fastest only if Faster is not satisfactory.
  7. Repeat the same scene with Adaptive-Sync on and off.
  8. If you prefer fixed refresh, check whether MPRT improves clarity without unacceptable dimming, flicker or double images.
  9. Adjust Black Equalizer only after motion settings are settled.
  10. Save the least distracting combination for that game and frame-rate range.

Do not judge the result from a paused menu or a static web page. Ghosting is a moving-image artifact, and the balance between blur and overshoot changes with refresh rate, frame rate and scene contrast.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When replacing the monitor is the realistic answer

If dark trails remain objectionable with native resolution, a stable high refresh rate, Faster overdrive and your preferred VRR setting, you have reached the practical limit of configuration. The TFT Central measurement and RTINGS description support a panel-class limitation, not a guaranteed software cure.

When comparing a replacement, prioritize measurements and reviews that report dark-transition response time, overshoot at the refresh range you will use, VRR behavior, refresh-rate ceiling and brightness with any strobing mode enabled. A faster-response IPS gaming monitor is the relevant category to investigate when minimum trailing matters more than the G5’s VA contrast. Compare the trade-off with your priorities: tear-free VRR, deep blacks, brightness, refresh rate and motion clarity do not all improve together.

Key takeaways for an Odyssey G5 owner

  • The root cause is usually slow VA dark transitions, not a defective cable or graphics driver.
  • Use native resolution and the highest stable refresh rate supported by your exact model and input.
  • Start with Response Time Faster; step down if halos appear and test Fastest only when ordinary trails remain.
  • Compare Adaptive-Sync on and off in the game and frame-rate range you actually use.
  • Treat MPRT/Extreme as an optional strobing mode with brightness, compatibility and double-image trade-offs.
  • Use Black Equalizer for shadow visibility, not to speed pixel transitions.
  • If the remaining smear is unacceptable, a faster-response IPS monitor—not another preset—is the dependable hardware path.
