False presence detections usually come from a mismatch between the sensor’s room model and the real room, reflections outside the area you want to monitor, or thresholds that accept weak or unstable returns. Correct the mounting position, enter the actual height, set useful vertical limits, and run tilt calibration first. Then shorten the sensing field with transmission power and blind zones, lower detection sensitivity, raise the SNR threshold gradually, and adjust recognition and timing thresholds while watching the live map.
This order matters: software filtering cannot reliably compensate for a sensor that is tilted, mounted at the wrong map position, or aimed beyond the room. Make one change at a time and test with the room empty and occupied.

A nine-step sequence for stopping false detections
- Match the physical mounting position to the room map. In the Shelly Presence Gen4 web interface, choose Left, Center, or Right to match where the device is actually installed. A position mismatch shifts the modeled coverage, so objects in a neighboring area can appear to be inside the monitored room.
- Enter the real mounting height. Measure from the floor to the sensor, then enter that value rather than relying on an estimate. The height is used with the room geometry to place detections at the correct distance and elevation.
- Set minimum and maximum detection height. Use the lower limit to exclude floor-level areas that are irrelevant to occupancy, such as furniture bases or pets moving close to the floor. Use the upper limit to exclude ceiling-level reflections or spaces above the area you need to monitor. Keep the interval large enough to include the head and torso of a person you want detected.
- Run tilt calibration after mounting. Calibration must be done after the sensor is fixed in its final position. Shelly’s API documentation states: “For proper operation this must be called after sensor mounting.” If you move or rotate the device later, calibrate again.
- Reduce transmission power when the room is small. Transmission power controls how far the sensing field reaches. Lower it when the live map shows returns through a doorway, wall, window, or into an adjoining room. Do not reduce it so far that the far side of the intended room disappears.
- Lower detection sensitivity. Shelly says low sensitivity reduces false triggers. Start with a small reduction, then test a person sitting still, walking, and leaving the room. High sensitivity is intended to improve detection of stationary objects, but it also makes weak or unwanted returns more likely to be accepted.
- Raise the SNR threshold in small increments. SNR is the minimum signal strength relative to background noise. Shelly documents that higher values improve stability and reduce false detections, while lower values react faster. Increase it one step at a time and check that a slow or distant occupant is still detected.
- Make recognition and velocity thresholds stricter only if necessary. A higher object-recognition threshold requires more detected points before an object is recognized. A higher velocity threshold ignores very slow movement. These settings can suppress small reflections, but excessive values can miss a real person who is sitting or moving slowly.
- Mask persistent problem areas and stabilize state timing. Draw blind zones over known sources such as furniture, doorways, windows, or an adjacent area. If the displayed state still flickers, adjust motion activation, motion release, tracking-loss, stillness-tracking, and stillness-timeout thresholds incrementally. Verify each change against real occupancy before increasing it further.
Correct the room geometry before tuning sensitivity
Choose Left, Center, or Right from the actual installation
The mounting-position setting is not a cosmetic label. It tells the Presence Gen4 how to interpret its coverage relative to the room. Select Left when the sensor is installed on the left side of the mapped room, Center when it is centered, and Right when it is on the right. If the device is physically centered but configured as left or right, the room map can place detections in the wrong locations.

Check the live map with the room empty. A return that appears beyond the wall you expect, in a hallway, or in a neighboring room is evidence that geometry or sensing distance needs correction before you start raising thresholds.

Use measured height and useful vertical limits
Enter the sensor’s actual floor-to-device height. Even a modest height error changes the calculated relationship between a return and its position. Next, set the minimum and maximum detection heights to the vertical slice that matters for occupancy. Excluding the floor can remove low reflections from furniture, pets, or objects near the ground; excluding the ceiling can remove returns from overhead structures.
Do not set the limits so narrowly that a seated person’s torso, a person standing near the edge of the room, or a legitimate low movement falls outside the monitored band. Change one boundary at a time and observe the live map after each change.
Calibrate tilt only after the device is fixed
Mount the sensor permanently, confirm that it is level and aimed as intended, and then run tilt calibration in the web interface or through the device’s supported API. Calibration performed before mounting describes the wrong angle. If you later change the bracket, rotate the enclosure, or move the device to another wall, repeat calibration. Shelly’s API wording is explicit: “For proper operation this must be called after sensor mounting.”

Limit how far and how broadly the sensor listens
Transmission power controls distance, not occupancy logic
Transmission power changes the maximum sensing distance. In a compact bedroom, office, or bathroom, the default field can extend beyond the intended room. Lower the power until the map stops showing the doorway, window, or adjacent space, then confirm that the farthest point you need to monitor remains visible.
Power is a physical-range control. It should be adjusted before using aggressive recognition or timing filters. A threshold may hide an unwanted return temporarily, but it does not prevent the sensor from receiving it; reducing range addresses the source.
Use blind zones for fixed, known sources
Blind zones tell the presence processor to ignore specified areas. They are useful for a large piece of furniture, a doorway that opens onto a busy hall, a window with outside movement, or a neighboring zone that cannot be removed by placement and power alone. The Presence API supports blind-zone arrays and room zones.

Draw a blind zone tightly around the problem area. An oversized zone can remove part of the actual room and create apparent missed detections. After creating one, test occupancy immediately inside and outside its boundary so you know exactly what was excluded.
Choose thresholds that match the behavior you need
| Control | What it changes | Use for false detections | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Detection sensitivity | How readily returns are accepted as detections. | Lower it to reduce false triggers. | High sensitivity is better for stationary-object detection; lowering it can miss weak or stationary occupants. |
| SNR threshold | The minimum signal strength compared with background noise. | Raise it gradually to reject unstable, low-contrast returns. | Higher values improve stability and reduce false detections; lower values react faster. |
| Object-recognition threshold | The minimum number of detected points required to recognize an object. | Raise it when small reflections are being classified as objects. | Very strict values can reject a real person at the edge of coverage or behind an obstruction. |
| Velocity threshold | The minimum speed required for an object to be detected. | Raise it when very slow artifacts are triggering events. | Slow movement and a person settling into a chair may no longer be recognized. |
| Transmission power | How far the sensing field extends. | Lower it when returns appear outside the room. | Too little power leaves legitimate parts of the room uncovered. |
| Minimum and maximum detection height | The vertical band processed for presence. | Exclude floor-level or ceiling-level sources. | A narrow band can exclude a person’s torso or a low legitimate movement. |
| Blind zones | Areas excluded from presence processing. | Mask persistent reflections or adjacent spaces. | An oversized zone creates a blind spot in the room you need to monitor. |
Detection sensitivity
Shelly’s guidance is direct: “low sensitivity reduces false triggers.” Use that setting when the room is empty but the map repeatedly reports presence from weak returns. Test both a moving person and a stationary person before settling on a value, because high sensitivity is specifically intended to improve detection of stationary objects.
SNR threshold
Think of SNR as a quality gate. The sensor compares a return with the background noise and accepts it only when the return clears the configured minimum. Raising the threshold favors stability; lowering it favors faster reaction. Increase it gradually rather than jumping to an extreme value, and keep the setting only if the empty-room state becomes stable without losing the person you need to detect.

Object recognition and velocity
Use the object-recognition threshold when the problem is a small cluster of points being treated as an object. Use the velocity threshold when the problem is extremely slow movement or drifting reflections. These filters are not substitutes for correct placement. If a seated occupant disappears, reverse the last change or lower the stricter threshold until the occupant remains visible.
Stop state flicker with timing thresholds
A sensor can identify a real return but still appear unreliable if its state changes too quickly. Presence Gen4 exposes separate controls for motion activation, motion release, tracking-loss, stillness-tracking, and stillness-timeout. They shape when a detection becomes active, how it is released, how long tracking can be lost, and how a stationary target is retained.

If brief reflections turn the state on, increase the activation requirement slightly so a return must persist before activation. If the state remains on after a person leaves, increase the release requirement in small steps. Test a short walk-through and a person who remains in the room; a release setting that is too long delays the vacant state.

Tracking-loss and stillness controls
Tracking-loss handling determines how the sensor behaves when an identified target temporarily disappears. Stillness-tracking and stillness-timeout determine how long a stationary target is retained before being considered gone. Increase these values only when a real occupant is being dropped during a pause or brief obstruction. If an empty room stays occupied, shorten the relevant timeout instead.
Change one timing control at a time. Record the old value, make a small adjustment, and test three cases: empty room, moving occupant, and stationary occupant. This avoids masking a geometry problem with excessive delay.

- Establish an empty-room baseline. Close doors and windows in their normal positions, turn on ordinary equipment, and watch the map without anyone in the room. Note where returns persist.
- Fix physical errors first. Recheck Left, Center, or Right, the measured mounting height, vertical limits, and tilt calibration. Do not change several sensitivity settings while the map is geometrically wrong.
- Reduce the field. Lower transmission power until neighboring areas disappear, then add a tightly drawn blind zone for any fixed source that remains.
- Filter quality, not people. Lower detection sensitivity and raise SNR in small increments. After each change, have one person walk, sit, and remain still at the farthest required position.
- Apply recognition or velocity filtering only to a specific artifact. Raise one threshold if you can identify small or very slow returns as the cause. If a legitimate occupant disappears, undo that change.
- Stabilize timing last. Adjust activation, release, tracking-loss, stillness-tracking, or stillness-timeout only after the map and detection quality are acceptable. Check the empty-room transition and the return-to-room transition.
Symptoms and targeted fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | First action | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Presence appears in a hallway or next room. | Coverage extends beyond the room or the mounting position is wrong. | Confirm Left, Center, or Right; reduce transmission power. | The live map ends at the intended room boundary. |
| Empty floor area triggers presence. | Low-level returns or reflections are inside the vertical band. | Raise the minimum detection height. | A person’s lower body is not excluded while floor artifacts disappear. |
| Window or outside movement triggers the room. | Returns pass through the window or an adjacent zone is visible. | Use a blind zone and, if needed, lower transmission power. | The required interior area remains covered. |
| State flickers while a person sits still. | Sensitivity, SNR, or stillness timing is too strict. | Undo the last strict filter, then adjust stillness-tracking or stillness-timeout in small steps. | The seated occupant remains present without making the empty room stay occupied. |
| Small objects trigger detection. | Recognition threshold is too permissive. | Raise the object-recognition threshold slightly. | Walking and stationary people still generate enough detected points. |
| Very slow movement is ignored or causes unstable state. | Velocity threshold is too high or tracking time is too short. | Lower velocity threshold or lengthen the appropriate tracking setting. | Slow movement is detected without accepting background noise. |
| Detection shifted after moving the device. | Mounting geometry and tilt calibration no longer match. | Re-enter height and position, then recalibrate tilt. | The map aligns with the physical room again. |
Presence Gen4 versus BLU Motion
These products should not be tuned as if they were interchangeable. Presence Gen4 is a presence-tracking sensor intended to retain an occupant even when the person is stationary. BLU Motion is a separate Bluetooth motion sensor that reports motion events.

| False-trigger controls | Detection sensitivity, SNR threshold, object-recognition threshold, velocity threshold, transmission power, blind zones, and state-timing thresholds. | Sensitivity and blind-time style motion controls; the Presence Gen4 controls do not apply. |
| Stationary occupants | Designed to continue recognizing presence when an occupant stops moving, subject to placement and threshold settings. | Motion sensing is not the same as continuous stationary-presence tracking. |
| Room coverage | Configured through mounting position, height, tilt, detection-height limits, power, and zones. | Coverage depends on Bluetooth motion-sensor placement; a directly comparable room-coverage figure is not stated here. |
What the available evidence does—and does not—show
Shelly’s documentation provides configuration guidance and qualitative behavior, not an independently published false-detection rate or accuracy percentage. No universal number can therefore be assigned to the improvement from a particular threshold. Results depend on mounting, room shape, furniture, reflective surfaces, neighboring spaces, and the detection behavior you choose to preserve.
The practical standard is repeatable behavior in your own room: no presence in the empty baseline, reliable detection while a person walks through, and continued presence while that person remains still. Keep a record of each setting change so you can return to the last known-good configuration if a stricter filter removes legitimate occupancy.
