If your eyes feel tired or text looks uncomfortable on the Galaxy S26 Ultra, start with reversible display changes: use Dark mode in a dim room, lower brightness with Extra dim, try Eye comfort shield, and compare Privacy Display on versus off if letters look jagged. Change one setting at a time so you can identify what actually improves readability. Samsung notes that menus and feature availability can vary by software version, model and region.
These controls are comfort and legibility options, not a diagnosis or a guarantee that symptoms will disappear. The Galaxy S26 Ultra also has resolution, Screen mode and Motion smoothness controls that you can tune to your own vision and preferences.

A five-minute troubleshooting sequence
Use this order so you can quickly separate brightness, color, privacy filtering and motion from one another. Keep the same text, app and room lighting during each comparison.
- Reduce glare first. In a dark room, open Settings > Display and turn on Dark mode. You can also use the Dark mode tile in the Quick panel. Samsung says some third-party apps may not follow the system theme, and certain configurations can show flicker, so check the apps in which you read most often. See Samsung’s guidance at Reduce eye strain on your Galaxy phone or tablet.
- Dim the remaining light. If the lowest ordinary brightness is still too intense, open Settings > Accessibility > Visibility enhancements > Extra dim (the exact path can differ) and enable it. Increase the Extra dim amount only as far as text remains clear.
- Test the display’s color temperature. In Settings > Display > Eye comfort shield, try the available Adaptive schedule or create a Custom schedule. Move the color-temperature control gradually; the screen may look warmer or yellower. Samsung describes Eye comfort shield as limiting blue light, not as a proven treatment for eye strain.
- Investigate jagged text. If letters look sawtooth-like or discomfort starts when Privacy Display is enabled, turn Privacy Display off and read the same text again. Samsung has a device-specific support article for this exact presentation: When I turn on Privacy Display on my Galaxy S26 Ultra, text appears jagged or sawtooth-like, causing eye strain.
- Only then test clarity controls. Compare the available Screen resolution, Screen mode (Vivid or Natural) and Motion smoothness (Adaptive or Standard). Keep the choice that makes your text easiest to read; Samsung does not state that any of these settings treats eye strain.
- Update the phone and apps. Samsung recommends keeping software and apps current for the best Dark mode experience. Install pending updates, restart the phone, and repeat the comparison before changing several controls at once.
If a change makes reading worse, reverse it. Every step above is reversible, so you can return to your previous configuration.

Control brightness before changing color
Dark mode for dim rooms
Dark mode changes compatible Samsung interface elements and apps to a dark background. It is most useful when the room is dark and a bright white interface feels glaring. Open Settings > Display > Dark mode settings to schedule it, or toggle the mode from Quick panel. A schedule lets you use a light theme during the day and a dark theme at night without manually switching.
Do not assume every app will match. Samsung notes that some third-party apps do not follow the system theme. Check an app’s own appearance setting if its background remains bright. Samsung also warns that some configurations can show flicker; if you notice that, switch Dark mode off temporarily and compare the same page under a lower brightness level.
Extra dim when minimum brightness is still bright
Extra dim applies additional dimming below the phone’s normal brightness range. On many One UI builds, the control is under Settings > Accessibility > Visibility enhancements > Extra dim; a Quick panel shortcut may also be available after editing the panel. Enable it in a dark room and adjust the amount until white backgrounds are tolerable while body text remains distinct.

A setting that works for a dark bedroom may make a sunlit screen unreadable, so reassess it when ambient light changes. If you need to raise brightness substantially to read, disable Extra dim rather than forcing a dim image that makes you squint.
Use Eye comfort shield as a preference setting
Samsung describes Eye comfort shield as a way to limit the display’s blue light. The control is usually at Settings > Display > Eye comfort shield. Samsung’s current guidance identifies two main approaches:
Rank #2
- PRIVACY DISPLAY: Automatically hide your screen from those beside you. The built-in privacy display can be preset¹ to turn on when receiving notifications, typing passwords, or using specific apps

- Adaptive: the phone adjusts the display’s color characteristics according to conditions supported by your software.
- Custom: choose a schedule and a color temperature that suits your routine. Some regional builds expose an always-on choice or different schedule labels.
As you increase warmth, whites can look yellow or amber. That is an intentional color change, not evidence that the setting has cured a symptom. Give your eyes a few minutes to adapt, then read several paragraphs at your normal size. If skin tones, photos or white backgrounds look distracting, reduce the warmth rather than abandoning legibility.
Samsung Canada’s support explanation also recommends Eye comfort shield and notes that the screen can appear warmer when blue light is limited: Help reduce eye fatigue on your Galaxy phone. Regional menus and available schedules can differ, so use the labels shown on your S26 Ultra instead of following a setting that is absent.
When Privacy Display makes text look jagged
Run the on/off comparison
Privacy Display is designed to reduce side-angle visibility through the display hardware when enabled. Samsung describes it as a privacy control in its Galaxy S26 Ultra announcement: Share on Your Terms With Galaxy S26 Ultra.
If straight strokes look serrated, letters have a sawtooth edge, or eye discomfort begins only after Privacy Display is enabled, use the same document to compare both states:
- Open a high-contrast page with ordinary body text, such as a system settings screen.
- Turn Privacy Display off using its Quick panel tile or the Privacy Display control wherever it appears in your Display settings.
- Hold the phone at your usual reading distance and angle. Do not judge it only from an extreme side angle, because Privacy Display is intended to change off-axis visibility.
- Read the same lines for a minute with the feature off, then on. Record which state gives cleaner letter edges.
Samsung Gulf has a support entry specifically for this symptom and states, “The jagged appearance of text is not a screen issue.” That is Samsung’s characterization of the reported Privacy Display behavior, not a medical explanation and not proof that every case has the same cause. If turning the feature off removes the effect, leave it off while reading and re-enable it only when the privacy benefit matters.

When Privacy Display is useful despite the trade-off
Privacy Display can be valuable on a bus, in a café or beside another person when you do not want the screen readable from the side. The same optical behavior that limits side-angle viewing may make fine text look less comfortable to you. Treat the setting as a task-based choice: use it for sensitive information in public, and disable it for long reading if the text comparison is worse with it enabled.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTune clarity and motion only when they improve reading
The S26 Ultra exposes additional display controls. Samsung documents the controls but does not claim that each one reduces eye strain. Change one setting, read the same text, and keep the setting only if it improves your own legibility.
Screen resolution
Open Settings > Display > Screen resolution. Choose among the resolution levels offered by your software, then inspect small text in the apps you use most. A higher available resolution can make fine edges appear more detailed, while a lower choice may alter how comfortable text feels or how much content fits on screen. Samsung’s support page does not establish a universal best resolution or provide an eye-comfort result for each choice.
Screen mode: Vivid or Natural
Under Settings > Display > Screen mode, Samsung provides Vivid and Natural options on supported builds. Vivid increases color intensity; Natural aims for a less saturated presentation. Neither mode is identified as an eye-strain treatment. For reading, compare black text, gray interface elements and colored links rather than judging a photo alone.
Motion smoothness: Adaptive or Standard
In Settings > Display > Motion smoothness, the available choices include Adaptive and Standard. Adaptive can change the display’s refresh behavior according to activity, while Standard uses the phone’s standard motion setting. If scrolling text feels uncomfortable, compare both modes with the same long page and the same brightness. Keep the one that produces steadier, easier-to-follow movement for you; the available choice and behavior can vary by software version.

Samsung also notes that the Galaxy S26 series uses an 8-bit display panel, consistent with the Galaxy S25 series, in Understand the Galaxy S26 display panel. That is a display specification, not a measure of comfort or a prediction of whether you will experience eye strain.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical comparison plan
Changing five settings at once makes it impossible to know what helped. Use a short, repeatable test instead:
- Choose one text sample containing normal paragraphs, small labels and a few colored links.
- Keep the phone at your normal reading distance, with the same room lighting and the same font size.
- Start from your current settings and read for two to five minutes. Note glare, warmth, edge sharpness and scrolling comfort without trying to diagnose the sensation.
- Change one control: Dark mode, Extra dim, Eye comfort shield, Privacy Display, resolution, Screen mode or Motion smoothness.
- Read the same sample again. If the result is clearly worse, restore the previous value before testing another control.
- Test the setting at the times you normally use the phone. A choice that feels comfortable at night may be too dim outdoors, and a warm color may be distracting for photo or video work.
Keep a simple note such as “Dark mode on, Extra dim 20%, Eye comfort shield Custom” so you can return to a combination that works. Do not treat a single comfortable session as proof that a setting prevents future symptoms.
Common problems and fixes
Dark mode is on, but one app is still bright
That app may not support the system theme. Look for its own appearance, theme or display setting. If none exists, use lower brightness or Extra dim for that app, and avoid assuming the entire phone is malfunctioning.

The screen looks too yellow after enabling Eye comfort shield
Reduce the warmth or switch from Custom to Adaptive. If the warmer tint remains distracting, turn the feature off and compare readability in your normal lighting. Samsung presents the color shift as an expected effect of limiting blue light.
Best Value
- 6.8" Dynamic AMOLED 2X QHD+ display with 1–120 Hz adaptive refresh rate, up to ~1750 nits brightness, HDR10+ support, and ultra-smooth responsiveness for gaming and scrolling.
Text is comfortable only when Privacy Display is off
Leave Privacy Display off for long reading and re-enable it for short privacy-sensitive tasks. If jagged text remains with the feature off, test Screen mode, resolution and Motion smoothness one at a time, then install pending updates.
Extra dim makes letters harder to distinguish
Lower the Extra dim amount or disable it. Excessive dimming can reduce contrast for your particular room and font size; the goal is readable text, not the lowest possible brightness.
Settings or menu names do not match these steps
Samsung says features and settings can vary by model, software and region. Use the Settings search field for “Dark mode,” “Eye comfort shield,” “Extra dim,” “Privacy Display,” “Screen resolution,” “Screen mode” or “Motion smoothness.” Install system updates, then search again if a control is missing.

The available Samsung pages do not establish whether persistent discomfort comes from the display, Privacy Display processing, software, room lighting, viewing distance or an unrelated issue. Do not infer a diagnosis from the result of one toggle. First check for glare from lamps or windows, clean the screen, use a comfortable text size and take regular breaks from close viewing.
If pain, persistent blurred vision, headaches or other symptoms continue after you return the phone to comfortable settings, stop the comparison experiments and seek advice from an eye-care professional. For a device-specific problem, document which setting triggers the effect, the software version, the app and whether Privacy Display changes the result before contacting Samsung support.
Quick Recap
What the evidence does—and does not—show
- Samsung’s US guidance names Dark mode, Eye comfort shield and Extra dim as built-in options to try in dim conditions. They are manufacturer suggestions, not guaranteed remedies.
- Eye comfort shield limits blue light and can use Adaptive or Custom scheduling and color temperature. Availability and labels vary by region and software.
- Samsung has a specific Galaxy S26 Ultra support page for jagged or sawtooth-like text with Privacy Display enabled. Testing the feature off is a practical comparison, not proof of a medical cause.
- Privacy Display changes side-angle visibility through display hardware when enabled, making it a privacy control rather than an eye-care feature.
- Resolution, Screen mode and Motion smoothness can change how text looks or moves. Choose by actual legibility, because Samsung does not state that any one option treats eye strain.
- No official statistic in these support and product pages establishes how common eye strain is on the S26 Ultra or how effective any setting is.
