What to change first
Eye discomfort during phone use is usually a combination of near focusing, reduced blinking, dry air, glare and long uninterrupted viewing. Brightness is only one part of the problem. The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) advises matching screen brightness to surrounding light, reducing glare, adjusting contrast and taking regular breaks. There is no clinically established brightness percentage that is best for every person or room.
- Set ordinary brightness for the room. Raise or lower the slider until text is clear without looking like a bright light source against the surroundings.
- Remove reflections. Move the phone or change the room light so lamps and windows are not reflected in the glass.
- Increase legibility before dimming further. Try Font size or Display size when small type is making you squint or hold the phone too close.
- Use Dark theme if you prefer its appearance. Check the apps you actually use because support and readability differ.
- Turn on Extra dim only when the normal minimum is still too bright. It is the Android control designed to dim below the device’s minimum brightness.
- Build in distance breaks and blinking. Settings cannot replace pauses during prolonged close work.
Set brightness for the surrounding light
Open Quick Settings by swiping down from the top of the screen, then move the brightness slider. In a bright room or outdoors, a display that is too dim can make you strain to distinguish letters and icons. In a dark room, the same setting can feel glaring. Adjust it whenever the lighting changes rather than treating a low percentage as an objective goal.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Automatic or adaptive brightness can be a useful starting point, but it may respond imperfectly to unusual lighting, reflections or a very dark room. If the screen keeps jumping between levels, switch to manual adjustment temporarily and set it by comfort and readability. Avoid judging brightness against a black screen alone; read normal text, view the pages you use and check whether you are squinting.
Contrast matters as well. If text looks washed out, increasing readability through the phone’s display or accessibility controls may help more than lowering luminance. Android’s exact contrast options differ by device, so search Settings for contrast, color or visibility when the standard controls do not make text clear.
Use Extra dim when minimum brightness is still uncomfortable
Google’s Android Accessibility Help describes the purpose plainly: “To dim your screen beyond your phone’s minimum brightness, use Extra dim.” Extra dim reduces the display below the hardware or software minimum, so it is the direct option for a phone that remains too bright at its ordinary lowest setting.
Common Android path
- Open Settings.
- Open Accessibility.
- Look for Extra dim under a display, visibility or related section.
- Turn it on and adjust any intensity control your phone provides.
Google’s current display guidance is version-sensitive. On Pixel 10 and later, Extra dim is integrated into the Quick Settings brightness slider. On Pixel 9 and earlier, Google directs users to the earlier Accessibility control. Other manufacturers can place the switch elsewhere or use a slightly different label. Searching Settings for “Extra dim” is the quickest fallback.
How to set the level without losing readability
Enable Extra dim in the room where you normally notice the problem, then reduce the level gradually while reading ordinary text. Stop as soon as the glare is tolerable; do not keep lowering it until letters become fuzzy or you have to move the phone closer. If photos, maps or small controls become difficult to distinguish, raise the level or return to the normal brightness slider.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Extra dim affects the display output globally while enabled. It does not correct dry eyes, focusing problems or glare from a lamp reflected in the glass. If the discomfort occurs only in one application, an app-specific theme, text-size control or reading mode may be a better answer than dimming the entire phone.
Dark theme: useful appearance change, not a guaranteed treatment
Dark theme changes the Android system interface and apps that support it. It does not recolor media such as video, and support varies by application and manufacturer. Because the documented behavior concerns interface colors rather than a universal reduction in emitted light, do not assume Dark theme will always reduce eye strain or total light from everything on screen.

Turn on the standard dark theme
- Open Settings.
- Choose Display or search Settings for Dark theme.
- Turn on Dark theme. You can also add the tile to Quick Settings on phones that offer it.
- Check your main apps individually. Many have a separate theme switch inside their own settings.
Compare standard and dark appearance while reading the services you use most. Some people find light text on a dark background comfortable; others find the halo around small text distracting, especially in a dim room. Choose the version that lets you read without squinting, not the one that appears darkest in a settings preview.
Android 16 expanded dark theme
Android 16 and newer add an expanded dark-theme option that can darken interfaces without native dark-theme support. Google warns that this processing can alter images or make text over images harder to read. Apps may opt out, and a manufacturer can exclude particular applications. If an image, chart or button becomes confusing, use the standard theme or disable expanded dark treatment for that app instead of compensating by making the whole phone brighter or dimmer.
Make text larger before making the screen darker
Small type encourages squinting and close viewing. Android provides separate Font size and Display size controls; both can be found by searching Settings when the menu path differs.

Font size
- Open Settings and search for Font size.
- Move the preview slider one step at a time.
- Check messages, web pages and the apps you use most.
Font size does not apply to every app. An application can use fixed-size text, its own typography setting or a custom layout. If one app ignores the system setting, look for a text or accessibility option inside that app rather than assuming the Android control is broken.

- Search Settings for Display size.
- Adjust the scale until controls and labels are comfortable to identify.

Display size changes more than text, so it can improve target size but reduce how much content fits on screen. These controls are practical readability tools, not medical treatments; their value is that you may not need to use an extremely dim display to see small details.
Reduce reflections and glare
A reflection can make a screen feel too bright even when its light output is moderate. Reposition the phone so a window or lamp is behind you rather than reflected directly in the glass. Change the angle slightly, move away from a glossy tabletop and clean fingerprints that scatter light. When possible, use a lamp that illuminates the room or the page you are reading without shining into the display.
AAO discusses matte filters as an option when glare remains a problem. Applying that advice to a phone means a matte anti-glare protector is an optional experiment, not a guaranteed eye-strain remedy. Choose one made for your exact handset because a protector that covers the wrong camera, sensor or curved edge can create new reflections or interfere with touch response. Matte surfaces can also soften fine detail and reduce perceived contrast, so remove it if reading becomes harder.
Take distance breaks and blink deliberately
The AAO’s recommended 20-20-20 rule is specific: “The best way to protect your eyes against eye strain is to take regular breaks using the ‘20-20-20’ rule: every 20 minutes, shift your eyes to look at an object at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.” A timer, calendar reminder or a natural pause between tasks can make the habit easier to follow.

Near work also suppresses blinking. AAO reports that people normally blink around 15 times per minute and that the rate can fall by about half while staring at screens or doing other close work. During a break, look across the room, relax your focus and blink fully several times instead of immediately switching to another nearby screen.
If your eyes feel dry, AAO says artificial tears may refresh them. The right formulation depends on the person and the cause of dryness, so treat that as a conversation with an eye-care professional rather than a universal product recommendation. Persistent pain, redness, light sensitivity, blurred vision or headaches should not be managed indefinitely by changing display settings.
Compare the Android options by what they change
| Option | What changes | Coverage | Main trade-off | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brightness slider | Overall display light output | Whole display | Too low can make text and details harder to read | Match the display to the room |
| Extra dim | Light output below the ordinary minimum | Whole display while enabled | Fine detail, images or controls can become difficult to see if set too low | When the normal minimum remains uncomfortably bright |
| Dark theme | Interface colors and supported app surfaces | System UI and participating apps; media colors are not changed | Comfort varies; support is incomplete | A preferred interface appearance in compatible apps |
| Expanded dark theme on Android 16+ | Attempts to darken interfaces without native support | Many additional interfaces, subject to app and manufacturer exclusions | Images can look altered and text over images may be harder to read | When an unsupported app remains comfortable after checking its visuals |
| Font size | Text scale where the app honors Android settings | Settings and compatible apps | Some apps ignore it or reflow differently | Small type is causing squinting |
| Display size | Overall interface scale | System and compatible layouts | Less content fits and some controls may move | Small controls or labels are difficult to target |
These are behavior and comfort choices, not comparative clinical test results. Start with the least disruptive change that solves the actual problem: ordinary brightness for a bright or dark room, Extra dim for an overly bright minimum, theme controls for interface preference, and size controls for legibility.

Reading in a dark bedroom
Turn down ordinary brightness until a page is readable without a bright halo, remove nearby reflections and use Extra dim if the minimum still feels harsh. Increase text size rather than moving the phone closer. Keep the phone far enough away that you are not bending your neck or focusing at an unusually short distance.

Using a phone outdoors
Raise brightness enough to overcome ambient light and shade the screen with your hand or body when possible. A display that is too dim in sunlight can cause squinting even though it emits less light. Reduce brightness again when you return indoors.

One app looks uncomfortable
Check that app’s own theme, reading mode, contrast or text settings first. If expanded dark theme on Android 16 has changed an image or reduced legibility, turn off the expanded treatment for that app or use the standard theme. Dimming the entire phone is rarely the most precise fix for a single application.
Text is clear but your eyes feel dry
Keep the display at a readable level, take the 20-20-20 breaks, blink fully and address airflow or room dryness. Display changes cannot substitute for evaluation when symptoms continue.
What not to rely on
Do not chase the lowest possible brightness
The dimmest setting is not automatically healthiest. If you struggle to resolve letters, icons or faces, the resulting squinting and close viewing can be counterproductive. Comfort means a readable image with manageable glare in the current environment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not treat Dark theme as universally better
Official Android guidance describes which interfaces Dark theme changes and warns about support and appearance limitations. It does not establish that every person will experience less eye discomfort, that every app will become darker, or that total emitted light always falls.
Do not buy blue-light-blocking glasses as a proven eye-strain cure
AAO states: “The Academy does not recommend any special blue light-blocking eyewear for computer use.” Its discussion of possible evening sleep effects is separate from a claim that such glasses relieve digital eye discomfort. AAO also says evidence does not show that blue light from digital devices damages the retina. Use ordinary visual-comfort measures first, and ask an eye-care professional about persistent symptoms.
Troubleshooting when a setting is missing or ineffective
- The menu path does not match: search Settings for the exact feature name. Manufacturer software can move Extra dim, theme, font and display controls.
- Extra dim cannot be found: verify the phone’s Android version and manufacturer documentation. Pixel 10 and later expose it through the Quick Settings brightness slider, while Pixel 9 and earlier use the Accessibility route described by Google.
- Dark theme changes only some apps: that is expected. Apps can require their own theme setting, opt out or be excluded by the manufacturer.
- Expanded dark theme makes content strange: switch back to the standard dark theme or disable the expanded option for the affected app.
- Font size changes some screens but not others: the app may not honor Android’s text-size setting. Look for an in-app text control.
- The phone feels bright despite low brightness: inspect reflections, white backgrounds and room lighting. A reflected lamp can dominate the visual impression even when the panel is dim.
- Symptoms continue after adjustments: stop treating settings as the complete solution and arrange advice from an ophthalmologist or optometrist.
When to seek professional advice
Contact an ophthalmologist if discomfort continues despite breaks, blinking, glare reduction and reasonable display settings. Seek prompt medical advice for persistent blurred vision, significant pain, marked redness, unusual light sensitivity or symptoms that are not limited to screen use. AAO’s current digital-device guidance is dated December 5, 2025; its blue-light explainer was published March 10, 2021. Those recommendations support comfort habits and evaluation, not a promise that any Android setting cures an eye condition.
