Measure the whole streaming setup at the wall, then multiply its actual energy use by your household’s applicable electricity rate. To lower the bill without interrupting the stream, reduce unnecessary workload and switch off equipment the stream does not need—testing each change for stream quality and stability. There is no reliable rupee estimate without your measured consumption and local tariff.
How to calculate your PC’s 24/7 electricity cost
Use the energy recorded at the wall during representative streaming, not the PC’s power-supply capacity, GPU TDP or component labels. The energy component of the cost is:

If your meter records accumulated kWh, multiply that amount by the applicable rate instead. This estimates the energy charge, not necessarily the full change to your bill: fixed charges, duties, adjustments and subsidies can affect the total.

Measure the complete setup
- Connect a suitably rated plug-in electricity meter with kWh tracking, following its instructions and checking that its rating and connection method suit the equipment.
- Measure the PC and any other equipment on the same setup, including monitors, capture gear and audio equipment. For equipment that cannot safely be measured through that meter, use an appropriate measurement method rather than assuming its draw.
- Record kWh over a representative streaming period. Longer measurement captures more variation than a brief reading. Divide by the number of hours measured to find average kW: kWh ÷ hours.
- Apply the hours you actually stream and your bill’s applicable marginal ₹/kWh rate. Compare before-and-after readings over similar operating periods.
A plug-in meter helps you measure energy; it does not reduce consumption by itself. Do not estimate wall use from PSU wattage: the PSU’s rated capacity is not its constant draw.
Example calculation (assumptions only)
If a measured setup averaged 0.20 kW for 720 hours, it would use 144 kWh. At an assumed marginal rate of ₹8/kWh, the energy component would be ₹1,152 (144 × 8). These are example assumptions, not a typical PC draw or a quoted Indian tariff; use your own meter reading and bill.

Use your actual Indian electricity tariff
There is no single household rate that applies across India. The Ministry of Power says state electricity regulatory commissions determine retail tariffs, and state governments may provide subsidies to domestic consumers. Check the current schedule and bill for your state, DISCOM and consumer category, including your slab, fuel or power-purchase adjustment, duty and any subsidy. The energy charge may change with consumption, while fixed charges may not fall when you use fewer units.

Reduce consumption without stopping the stream
Make one change at a time. After each change, check that the stream remains stable and its picture is still acceptable, then measure the whole setup again over a comparable period.
1. Reduce work the stream does not need
If the PC is also rendering a game, video or animated scene, try a less demanding scene, lower frame rate or lower resolution if that still meets your stream’s needs. The best setting depends on the content and hardware; do not trade away required visual quality or stability just to reduce load.

2. Compare encoder options on your PC
Test an available hardware encoder if it provides the quality and reliability you need. It is not guaranteed to lower total electricity use: the discrete GPU’s draw, encoder implementation and workload all matter. Compare measured whole-system kWh before and after rather than judging by the encoder label.

3. Turn off equipment that is not needed
Switch off unused monitors, lights and peripherals. If a display is only needed to start or check the stream, see whether it can be turned off once the stream is stable. Do not enable sleep or hibernation if it would stop the PC or stream.

4. Consider hardware replacement only after measuring
A lower-power PC, GPU or power supply could reduce draw in some configurations, but the result depends on workload, compatibility and efficiency. Compare any purchase cost with the expected energy savings at your own marginal tariff. Without measured consumption and stream requirements, there is no sound basis to recommend a particular upgrade or claim a specific saving.

Troubleshoot a cost estimate or reduction
- The estimate seems implausibly high or low: Confirm the meter covers the full setup, the measurement duration and kWh reading are correct, and you multiplied by the right number of operating hours.
- The bill did not fall as much as expected: Check whether you compared the energy component only or the total bill. Fixed charges, duties, adjustments and subsidies can affect the total; verify your current tariff and slab with your DISCOM.
- Power use fell but the stream became unstable or looked worse: Restore the last reliable settings, then test changes individually. Lowering workload, frame rate or resolution is only useful if the result still meets your stream’s requirements.
- A hardware encoder did not reduce consumption: That can happen because total draw depends on the GPU and workload as well as the encoding path. Use whole-system kWh comparisons to decide whether to keep the change.
- You are considering replacing a component: First establish the existing draw, required stream workload and expected tariff-based savings. A component rating alone cannot establish the likely bill reduction.
Copyright and YouTube considerations
Electricity savings do not make a stream eligible for YouTube monetization or give you rights to use its content. Before looping recordings, playlists or other material, confirm you have the necessary rights and review YouTube’s current policies on copyright and reused content. A continuously running stream also depends on YouTube remaining connected; services may attempt recovery, but no service can guarantee that a platform will accept a stream indefinitely.
