How to Reduce Distracted Walking With Android Digital Wellbeing Settings

On a supported Pixel phone, open Settings → Digital Wellbeing and parental controls → Heads Up, then complete the setup. Heads Up displays friendly reminders to look up while you walk. For stronger protection from attention-grabbing apps, combine it with Focus mode, app timers and notification controls. These settings are prompts and access controls—not a physical lockout—and Google does not publish a controlled percentage showing how much they reduce distracted-walking incidents.

What Android’s Heads Up feature actually does

Heads Up is Digital Wellbeing’s walking-awareness prompt. Google describes it this way: “When you turn on Heads Up, you’ll get friendly reminders to look up from your device while you walk.” The feature is intended to interrupt the habit of staring at a screen while moving, rather than to stop you from using the phone.

A reminder can appear while you are walking with the phone. It does not lock the screen, disable every app, detect traffic hazards, or guarantee that you will notice a cyclist, vehicle, curb or other obstacle. Treat it as a behavioral nudge. If you need to read or write something, stop in a safe place before looking down.

Google’s Pixel Help documentation lists Heads Up for Pixel 2 and later. Google also warns that menu names and steps can vary by device, so a different Android phone may not show the feature even when it has Digital Wellbeing.

Turn on Heads Up on a supported Pixel

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Digital Wellbeing and parental controls.
  3. Select Heads Up.
  4. Follow the on-screen setup instructions to enable the feature and allow any requested permissions.
  5. Leave the switch on when you want walking reminders. Return to the same Heads Up screen and turn the switch off when you no longer want them.

The exact wording can differ with Android releases and device software. If you do not see Heads Up, use the Settings search field for Digital Wellbeing or Heads Up. A missing result usually means the phone’s software does not expose the feature, the device is not a supported Pixel model, or the manufacturer has placed the control elsewhere.

Use Focus mode to remove tempting apps before a walk

Heads Up reminds you after the phone is already in your hand. Focus mode works earlier by making selected distractions unavailable and silencing their notifications while Focus mode is active. This is useful when a walk is long enough for social, video, game or shopping apps to pull you back repeatedly.

  1. Open Settings → Digital Wellbeing and parental controls → Focus mode.
  2. Select the apps that most often make you look down, such as social, video, games or shopping apps. Keep genuinely necessary tools—such as maps or an emergency contact method—available if you need them.
  3. Tap Turn on now for a one-off walk.
  4. For a recurring walk, choose the scheduling option and set the days and times when Focus mode should activate.
  5. If you need a short exception, use Google’s Take a break option, when available on your device, and then let Focus mode resume.

While Focus mode is active, Android prevents the selected apps from being used and stops their notifications. Because it is an access restriction rather than a reminder, it is the stronger choice for apps you do not need during the walk.

Set daily app timers for a broader habit change

App timers are useful when the problem is not only walking but repeated checking throughout the day. A timer gives an app a daily allowance. When that allowance expires, Android closes the app and dims its icon. Timers reset at midnight.

  1. Go to Settings → Digital Wellbeing and parental controls → App timers.
  2. Choose an app from the usage list.
  3. Set the daily time limit and confirm it.
  4. Repeat for other high-distraction apps, using limits that still leave room for essential communication or work.

App timers do not create a walk-specific lockout. They are a daily budget, so a person who spends the allowance before leaving home will encounter the limit during the walk; someone who has time remaining may still open the app. Use Focus mode for a particular outing and timers for the larger pattern.

Reduce notification-driven checking

Even when an app is not open, a notification can trigger the reflex to look down. Review notification controls in Android Settings and silence alerts that are not urgent. Digital Wellbeing also points to notification management and Do Not Disturb as ways to reduce interruptions.

  • Disable notifications for feeds, promotions, games and other nonessential sources.
  • Keep only alerts that you genuinely need while walking, such as an expected call or safety-related message.
  • Use Do Not Disturb for a walk when you want a broader interruption filter, checking its allowed-people and allowed-apps settings first.
  • Use Focus mode when an app’s notifications and access both need to be paused.

Notification settings are separate from Heads Up. Turning off alerts will not enable walking reminders, and enabling Heads Up will not silence incoming messages.

Where Bedtime mode and grayscale fit

Bedtime mode is primarily a night-time control, not a walking feature. It can schedule Do Not Disturb and use grayscale or a dimmed display. Those changes may reduce late-night checking before or after an evening walk, but they do not replace Heads Up or Focus mode during daytime movement.

To find it, open Settings → Digital Wellbeing and parental controls → Bedtime mode on devices that provide that menu. Select a schedule and the display or interruption options your phone offers. Since Android manufacturers can change the available choices, follow the labels shown on your device.

Choose the right control for the situation

Control What it changes Best use Timing Important limitation
Heads Up Shows friendly reminders to look up while walking Interrupting screen-focused walking in the moment Active after setup; Google’s cited Pixel documentation does not describe a separate schedule It is a prompt, not a lockout or safety guarantee
Focus mode Prevents selected apps from being used and stops their notifications Keeping social, video, game or shopping apps out of reach during a walk Turn on now or schedule recurring periods Apps not selected remain available; maps and other essential tools may need to stay accessible
Take a break Temporarily pauses the Focus mode restriction A short, deliberate exception when Focus mode is scheduled Temporary; availability and wording depend on device software Using it defeats the restriction for the break period
App timers Closes an app and dims its icon after the daily allowance is used Reducing total daily time in specific apps Daily limits reset at midnight Not specific to walking and does not prevent use before the limit is reached
Notification controls Silences or removes selected alerts Stopping notification-triggered glances Per app or through broader interruption settings Does not block opening an app manually
Do Not Disturb Filters interruptions according to its people and app rules Quiet walks where only selected contacts or alerts should get through Manual or scheduled, depending on device It does not itself provide a Heads Up reminder or block every app
Bedtime mode Can schedule Do Not Disturb and grayscale or dimmed display options Reducing late-night checking around evening routines Scheduled bedtime period Not a dedicated walking control; options vary by phone

A practical setup for a single walk

For an occasional walk, use a short sequence that changes the phone before you start moving:

  1. Prepare at a safe stop. Check the route, start any audio, send necessary messages and put the phone away before stepping into traffic or a crowded path.
  2. Start Focus mode. Use Turn on now and select the distracting apps you do not need. Leave navigation, emergency calling and other essential functions available.
  3. Confirm Heads Up is enabled. Open the Heads Up page if you have not used it before and verify its switch is on.
  4. Silence remaining interruptions. Apply Do Not Disturb or turn off nonessential notifications if alerts are likely to pull your attention down.
  5. Walk without interacting. If a reminder appears, treat it as a cue to raise your eyes and scan the path, not as an invitation to dismiss it while continuing to read.
  6. Stop before using the phone. Move to the side of the path or another safe location before checking directions, replying or changing settings.
  7. Restore normal access afterward. Turn off a manual Focus mode session when the walk ends, or let its schedule expire.

Build a recurring routine with schedules

If distracted walking happens during a commute, dog walk or regular exercise session, scheduling reduces the number of decisions required. In Focus mode, choose the schedule option, select the days and set the start and end times around the whole walk rather than only the moment you leave. A schedule also covers the period when you may be preparing to go, when notifications can otherwise pull you into an app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the scheduled list narrow enough to be practical. Blocking a navigation app, ride service, accessibility tool or emergency communication method can create a different problem. Add only apps whose absence will not compromise the route or your ability to get help.

Use app timers separately for apps that consume attention at other times. For example, a scheduled Focus mode can cover a 30-minute commute, while a daily timer limits a video app across the rest of the day. The two controls address different causes and can be used together.

Check whether your phone supports the feature

The cited Google Pixel Help page explicitly lists Pixel 2 and later for Heads Up. That is the clearest documented device boundary in the available official material; it is not a promise that every Android phone with a newer Android version includes the same switch.

On a non-Pixel phone:

  1. Open Settings and search for Digital Wellbeing, Digital Wellbeing and parental controls or Heads Up.
  2. Open the Digital Wellbeing dashboard if it appears and inspect its available controls.
  3. If Heads Up is absent, use the controls your manufacturer provides—Focus mode, app timers, notification management and Do Not Disturb—to reduce access and interruptions.
  4. Do not assume that a similarly named third-party feature has the same behavior as Google’s Pixel Heads Up.

Google notes that steps can vary by device. A manufacturer may rename a menu, move it under another settings category or omit a feature even when the rest of Digital Wellbeing is present.

Troubleshoot common problems

Heads Up is not listed

Confirm the phone model and search Settings rather than relying on a remembered menu path. The documented Pixel coverage begins at Pixel 2. On other models, the feature may simply be unavailable. Continue with Focus mode, app timers and notification controls instead of installing an unverified imitation that claims to be the same setting.

Focus mode did not stop an app

Open the Focus mode app list and verify that the app is selected. A scheduled session may also be outside its active time, or a temporary Take a break period may still be running. Reopen Focus mode and check whether it says it is active before starting the walk.

Notifications still appear

Focus mode silences notifications from the apps selected for Focus mode; it is not a universal replacement for notification settings or Do Not Disturb. Review the app’s notification permissions and the people-and-app exceptions in Do Not Disturb. Alerts from an app you did not select may continue.

An app timer seems ineffective

Timers are daily allowances, not per-walk limits. Check whether the app has already reached its limit and whether the timer reset at midnight. If the app remains available because time is left, use Focus mode for the specific walk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The controls look different

Android manufacturers and software versions can change labels, locations and available options. Use Settings search and match the function—Heads Up, Focus mode, App timers, notification controls or Do Not Disturb—rather than expecting an identical screen.

What these settings can and cannot prove

Google’s official documentation explains how the features work, but the cited material does not publish a controlled statistic for a reduction in distracted-walking incidents. There is therefore no supported percentage to attach to Heads Up, Focus mode or app timers. The defensible claim is narrower: Heads Up supplies a walking reminder, while Focus mode and app timers reduce access to selected apps or limit their daily use.

Those controls work best when paired with a simple rule: do not interact with the phone while moving. Stop first, then look at the screen. A reminder may help establish that habit, but it cannot see every hazard or make the decision for you.

Recommended combination

  • For the reminder itself: enable Heads Up on a supported Pixel.
  • For a distraction-free outing: turn on Focus mode and select the apps you do not need.
  • For repeated overuse: add app timers with daily limits that reset at midnight.
  • For alert-driven glances: silence nonessential notifications or use Do Not Disturb with carefully chosen exceptions.
  • For evening routines: use Bedtime mode’s schedule, grayscale or dimming options when your phone provides them.
  • For safety: stop in a safe place before reading, typing, changing navigation or dismissing a notification.
