The filter must be verified for the generator’s engine family, power range, exhaust-temperature profile, fuel and operating pattern. A DPF targets soot and other particulate matter; it generally does not reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx), so NOx compliance may require a separate control technology.
The safest retrofit starts with an engine inspection, representative exhaust-temperature logging and a check against the exact verification letter for the proposed filter. Correct sizing, backpressure monitoring, regeneration and scheduled ash cleaning determine whether the system remains effective and safe.

What a diesel generator particulate filter does
A DPF is an exhaust after-treatment device installed in the exhaust stream. Its porous substrate captures soot and other particulate matter before the exhaust leaves the generator. As soot accumulates, regeneration oxidizes the combustible material. Periodic ash cleaning removes the non-combustible residue that regeneration cannot burn.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency describes DPFs as exhaust after-treatment devices that significantly reduce emissions from diesel-fueled vehicles and equipment. On stationary generators, the same basic principle applies, but the filter must be approved for the specific engine and operating conditions. EPA verification is not a blanket approval for every diesel engine.

What the filter removes
- Particulate matter, including soot captured in the wall-flow substrate.
- Some hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide when the verified system is designed and tested to reduce them.
- Visible smoke associated with particulate emissions, when the engine is healthy and the filter is operating within its approved conditions.
What it does not solve
A DPF generally does not reduce NOx. NOx forms through the combustion process and is not removed simply by trapping soot in a particulate filter. If a permit or local rule limits NOx, evaluate a separate verified NOx-control technology rather than assuming a DPF will satisfy that requirement.
How much PM reduction can you expect?
EPA states that verified DPFs typically reduce PM by 85–90% or more. The percentage belongs to a verified filter-and-engine application, not to every installation bearing the same product name. Fuel quality, exhaust temperature, engine-out PM, duty cycle and maintenance all affect whether the filter stays within its verification conditions.
| Verified example | Reported PM reduction | Evidence and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Donaldson NR-LNF | 90% | EPA verified example accessed in 2026; applies only to the listed engine, fuel and temperature criteria. |
| Caterpillar DPF | 89% | EPA verified example accessed in 2026; applies only to the listed engine, fuel and temperature criteria. |
| Typical verified DPF range | 85–90% or more | EPA, 2010; the range is conditional on the verification requirements for the particular application. |
Do not transfer the 89% or 90% figures to a different generator without checking its verification letter. A filter that works on one engine family can fail to regenerate, exceed allowable backpressure or fall outside its certified reduction on another.
Will a DPF work on your generator?
Compatibility is an application decision. Before buying hardware, gather the generator and engine information that the verification program uses to define an approved installation.
Identify the engine and generator
- Generator make and model.
- Engine make, model and engine family.
- Model year or emissions tier.
- Rated output in kilowatts or horsepower.
- Exhaust-pipe dimensions and available mounting space.
- Expected duty cycle, including standby, prime-power or frequently changing loads.
The engine family is particularly important because two engines with similar horsepower can have different exhaust flow, engine-out PM and temperature behavior. Use the nameplate and engine documentation rather than estimating from generator size alone.
Measure the operating conditions
Record exhaust temperatures over representative loads and ambient conditions. Include the low-load periods that occur during real operation, not just a short full-load run. Compare the logged profile with the candidate filter’s required regeneration threshold and verification criteria. The filter manufacturer’s documentation, not a generic temperature assumption, determines whether passive regeneration is possible.

Check fuel and oil requirements
Confirm the fuel-sulfur limit and lubrication-oil requirements in the verification letter. For example, the EPA-listed Donaldson NR-LNF application requires ultra-low-sulfur diesel at 15 parts per million or less. Other systems can specify their own limits. Using fuel outside the approved specification can increase ash or poison the catalyst and invalidate the expected reduction.
Assess engine condition first
Inspect maintenance records, fuel consumption, lubrication-oil consumption, blowby and the complete exhaust system. EPA’s installation guidance calls for a thorough engine inspection before a retrofit. Excessive blowby can indicate engine wear; high oil or fuel consumption can load the filter with soot and ash faster than its design schedule assumes. Repair those faults before installing the DPF.
How regeneration works
Regeneration is the process that removes accumulated soot from the filter. It is different from ash cleaning: soot is combustible and can be oxidized, while ash is non-combustible and must eventually be removed mechanically or with the manufacturer’s approved cleaning process.
Passive regeneration
In passive regeneration, the exhaust naturally reaches the temperature and chemical conditions needed to oxidize soot during normal operation. This approach is attractive for generators that run long enough and at sufficient load to maintain the required exhaust profile. A standby set that spends most of its time idling or lightly loaded may not provide those conditions.
Active regeneration
An active system uses the method specified by its manufacturer to raise the filter to regeneration conditions. The method may involve an integrated heater, burner, dosing strategy or another controlled process. Do not improvise an active-regeneration sequence: use the exact controls, interlocks and operating limits supplied for that system.
Why temperature logging matters
Average generator load is not a substitute for exhaust-temperature data. Ambient conditions, enclosure design, exhaust length, load changes and engine condition all influence temperature at the filter inlet. Log those conditions during the loads and seasons in which the generator will operate, then compare the results with the candidate’s verification letter.

Step-by-step retrofit procedure
- Record the baseline. Write down the generator and engine identification, engine family, model year, rated kW or horsepower, exhaust dimensions and intended duty cycle. Photograph the nameplates and existing exhaust routing.
- Inspect and service the engine. Review maintenance history and check oil consumption, fuel consumption, blowby, injectors, turbocharging, air handling and exhaust leaks. Correct faults before adding restriction to the exhaust.
- Measure exhaust temperatures. Log temperatures at representative loads and ambient conditions. Capture low-load operation, load changes and the periods when the generator is most likely to run.
- Shortlist only verified systems. Compare the recorded engine family, power range, exhaust flow, temperature profile, fuel sulfur and engine-out PM with the filter’s EPA or California Air Resources Board verification criteria. A generic or universal claim is not evidence of compatibility.
- Confirm fuel and oil specifications. Verify sulfur content, lubrication-oil formulation and any required oil-consumption limits. The Donaldson example requires ultra-low-sulfur diesel at 15 ppm or less; follow the separate limit when another system is selected.
- Have the filter sized and mounted by a qualified installer. The installer must account for exhaust flow, vibration, heat, clearances, service access and allowable backpressure. The mounting arrangement must not transfer damaging loads to the engine manifold or turbocharger.
- Install monitoring and warning devices. Fit the required backpressure monitor and provide a visible operator warning. The operator needs an unmistakable indication when restriction, regeneration or a fault requires action.
- Commission the retrofit. Record baseline backpressure, exhaust temperatures and operating conditions, then repeat the measurements after installation. Confirm that regeneration controls, alarms and shutdown interlocks operate as specified.
- Document the maintenance plan. Record inspection intervals, regeneration requirements, ash-cleaning criteria, filter serial number and the responsible service provider. Keep the verification letter and commissioning records with the generator’s maintenance file.
Backpressure, alarms and safe operation
A DPF adds flow resistance to the exhaust. As soot or ash accumulates, backpressure rises. Excessive backpressure can reduce engine performance, increase fuel use, raise exhaust temperatures and damage engine components. The correct limit is the engine and filter manufacturer’s specified maximum, not a general number borrowed from another installation.
Install the pressure-sensing and warning equipment required by the verified system. A visible alarm should identify a restriction or regeneration problem before the filter reaches a damaging condition. Operators should know what each warning means, which loads are permitted, and when to shut down and call a qualified technician.
Maintenance: regeneration is not ash cleaning
Keep the engine healthy
Repair injector, turbocharger, air-filter, oil-consumption and exhaust-leak problems promptly. A poorly running engine can produce more soot than the DPF can regenerate. Excessive oil consumption also contributes to ash accumulation and shortens cleaning intervals.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFollow the regeneration schedule
Use the manufacturer’s specified passive or active regeneration procedure. Do not bypass a regeneration request, disable a warning or force a high-temperature event without confirming that the exhaust system, enclosure and surrounding materials are suitable.
Clean accumulated ash
Ash remains after soot burns. The filter therefore needs periodic inspection and cleaning according to the product-specific schedule or the manufacturer’s backpressure criteria. Cleaning frequency depends on engine oil consumption, fuel and operating conditions; there is no single interval that applies to every generator.
Inspect the complete exhaust system
Check clamps, gaskets, flexible sections, supports, insulation, sensors and the filter housing. Leaks upstream of the filter can admit oxygen or release untreated exhaust; loose supports can transmit vibration and crack the substrate. Record findings so a rising backpressure trend can be distinguished from a sudden installation fault.

Common failure modes and fixes
The filter never reaches regeneration conditions
Likely cause: The generator operates mostly at light load, or the exhaust-temperature profile is below the verified threshold.
Recommended Free Tools
Fix: Recheck the temperature log against the filter’s criteria. Have a qualified engineer determine whether the duty cycle can be changed safely or whether the application requires a system with the specified active-regeneration method. Do not assume a short full-load test represents normal operation.
Backpressure rises quickly after installation
Likely causes: Excessive engine-out PM, high oil consumption, an unsuitable filter size, fuel outside the approved sulfur limit, blocked passages or a failed regeneration system.
Fix: Stop treating the symptom as a cleaning problem. Inspect engine condition, verify fuel and oil, check sensors and regeneration, and confirm that the installed unit matches the engine family and exhaust flow. Follow the manufacturer’s limit for safe operation.
The generator produces visible smoke
Likely causes: Engine faults, a damaged substrate, an exhaust leak or operating conditions outside the verification criteria.

An alarm appears during a critical standby run
Fix: Follow the documented emergency operating procedure and the filter manufacturer’s limits. Do not silence or bypass the warning permanently. After the event, download or record the alarm condition, backpressure and temperatures, then correct the underlying cause before the next test.
Verification and regulatory acceptance
EPA and CARB verification programs define recognized emission reductions and the operating criteria under which those reductions apply. A verified device is not automatically legal in every location, however. Local air permits, state rules, emergency-generator requirements and building or fire codes can impose additional conditions.
Keep the current verification letter, installation instructions, commissioning measurements and maintenance records available for inspectors. If the generator is moved, its fuel changes, its engine is rebuilt or its duty cycle changes substantially, recheck whether the original verification still applies.

When more than one verified system fits the engine, compare the items that affect both compliance and service life:
- Verified PM, hydrocarbon and carbon-monoxide reductions for the exact engine application.
- Approved engine family, model years and power range.
- Required exhaust-temperature profile and whether regeneration is passive or active.
- Maximum fuel-sulfur content and lubrication-oil requirements.
- Backpressure-monitoring hardware, alarm outputs and shutdown interlocks.
- Ash-inspection and cleaning criteria.
- Physical envelope, service clearance, vibration rating and exhaust connection requirements.
- Acceptance by the authority that regulates the generator’s site.
The higher advertised PM percentage is not automatically the better choice. A filter that matches the generator’s real duty cycle and can be serviced safely is preferable to one with a higher laboratory figure that cannot regenerate in operation.
Practical commissioning checklist
- Engine family and model verified against the filter documentation.
- Rated power and exhaust flow within the approved range.
- Representative temperature log completed.
- Fuel sulfur and lubrication-oil requirements confirmed.
- Engine oil and fuel consumption checked and acceptable.
- Exhaust leaks repaired and supports rated for heat and vibration.
- Backpressure sensor and visible warning installed.
- Passive or active regeneration method tested.
- Baseline and post-installation backpressure recorded.
- Ash-cleaning and inspection schedule assigned to a qualified service provider.
- Verification letter and local permit requirements retained with the generator records.
Bottom line for generator owners
A correctly matched, verified DPF is one of the most effective ways to reduce particulate emissions from a diesel generator, with EPA-verified systems commonly achieving about 85–90% or more PM reduction under their specified conditions. It will not, by itself, solve NOx emissions. Success depends on a healthy engine, suitable exhaust temperatures, compliant fuel, controlled backpressure, reliable regeneration and scheduled ash removal. Treat the retrofit as an engineered emissions system rather than a universal exhaust accessory.
