Start with the first few feet around the building: remove leaf litter, dry plants, mulch, firewood and other combustibles; clean the roof and gutters; then work outward to break up connected grasses, shrubs and tree branches. Inspect vents, eaves, windows, decks and fences, and make an early-evacuation plan. This combination is called defensible space. It can reduce the fuel and ember traps around a house, but it cannot guarantee that the building will survive or that staying will be safe.

The exact distances and legal requirements depend on where you live. The zone measurements below are CAL FIRE guidance for California, while the household actions and planning advice from New South Wales (NSW) are labeled separately. Check your local fire service, council and building official before clearing vegetation or changing building components.

What defensible space does—and does not—do

Defensible space is a maintained buffer between a structure and nearby vegetation or other fuels. The aim is to slow fire spread and reduce the amount of flame, radiant heat and wind-borne embers reaching the building. CAL FIRE describes it as protection for the home and a safer working area for firefighters, calling defensible space “crucial for your home’s wildfire safety.”

A buffer is not a fireproof moat. Embers can travel well beyond a property, and a house can ignite when burning material lands on a roof, in a gutter, under a deck or against a wall. Defensible space works best with building maintenance, home hardening and a household evacuation plan. Treat it as risk reduction, not permission to remain during a fire.

Use the correct local standard

There is no single worldwide defensible-space rule. CAL FIRE’s three-zone model is a useful example for California, but it should not be presented as a universal standard. NSW guidance focuses on practical property maintenance, local clearing rules and leaving early. Other jurisdictions may set different distances, vegetation protections, construction requirements or permit conditions.

  • California: CAL FIRE describes Zone 0 from the structure to 5 feet, Zone 1 from 5 to 30 feet, and Zone 2 from 30 to 100 feet—or to the property line if that is nearer. Confirm current state and local requirements for your property.
  • NSW: NSW Government and the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) advise clearing gutters, screening openings, maintaining lawns, trimming overhanging vegetation, removing debris and keeping firefighting equipment ready. Clearing may be allowed under a specific scheme in some locations, while other work can require environmental approval. Burning may require a permit and local restrictions can apply.
  • Everywhere: Ask the local fire service or council what applies to your vegetation, slope, hazard classification and building. Ask a building official before altering vents or other parts of the envelope.

Start with the first five feet

The closest area deserves the earliest and most frequent attention because embers commonly collect in small gaps, horizontal surfaces and combustible landscaping next to a wall. In CAL FIRE’s model, Zone 0 is the first 5 feet and is the most important ember-resistant area.

Remove surface fuels and movable combustibles

  • Rake up leaves, needles, dry grass, bark, seed pods and other plant debris beside walls and under windows.
  • Remove dead plants and dry or brittle branches. Do not allow weeds or volunteer grasses to form a continuous strip against the structure.
  • Move firewood, lumber, cardboard, rubbish bins, propane-related storage and other combustible materials away from the building. Keep them out from beneath decks and stairs.
  • Relocate outdoor furniture, cushions, umbrellas, toys and decorative items when fire weather is forecast. Store them where embers cannot lodge against the house.
  • Replace combustible bark or mulch immediately beside the structure with a noncombustible surface such as gravel, pavers or concrete where local rules and drainage permit.

Clean the places where embers settle

Clear the roof, valleys, gutters, downspouts, porch roofs, decks, stairs and the spaces beneath raised structures. A gutter guard can reduce the amount of debris entering a gutter, but it does not eliminate the need to remove accumulated material. Check around skylights, solar equipment, vents and roof-wall junctions as well.

Keep access usable

Do not let stored items, overgrown shrubs or low branches block doors, gates, driveways or the route emergency crews may need. Keep house numbers visible from the road. These access measures do not stop fire, but they make evacuation and emergency operations less difficult.

Work outward to break fuel continuity

After the immediate perimeter is clean, inspect the yard as a connected system. Fire can move through grass into shrubs and from shrubs into tree crowns when fuels touch or overlap. The objective is not to strip every plant from the property; it is to remove dead material and interrupt the pathways that let flames climb and spread.

California’s example zones

CAL FIRE zone Distance from structure Main work Important qualification
Zone 0 0–5 feet Remove ember-catching debris and combustibles; use noncombustible hardscape where suitable. California guidance; verify current local rules.
Zone 1 5–30 feet Maintain vegetation, remove dead material and separate plants so fire has fewer continuous fuels. California guidance; the distance is not a universal standard.
Zone 2 30–100 feet, or to the property line if nearer Reduce dense or connected vegetation and ladder fuels while retaining appropriate, healthy plants. California guidance; property-line and environmental rules may limit work.

Maintain grasses and shrubs

  • Mow or otherwise maintain grasses before they cure and become tall, dry fuel, following local seasonal restrictions.
  • Thin dense shrubs and remove dead stems, fallen branches and accumulated litter beneath them.
  • Keep groups of shrubs separated from one another rather than allowing a continuous hedge to run toward the house.
  • Prune branches that create a bridge from a shrub into a tree or from a tree toward the roof.

Prune trees to reduce ladder fuels

CAL FIRE advises keeping tree branches at least 6 feet above the ground and leaving a separation of at least three times the shrub height between shrubs and the lowest tree branches. For example, if a shrub is 4 feet high, the lowest tree branches should be at least 12 feet above it. These are California recommendations, not a substitute for local arborist, fire-service or vegetation rules. Remove dead trees or limbs that could fall onto the building or power lines through an appropriately qualified professional.

Consider slope, wind and access

Fire generally moves faster uphill, and wind can carry embers across otherwise open areas. A steep slope, a narrow side yard, a timber retaining wall or vegetation beneath a deck may need a more conservative treatment than a level, open yard. Have the local fire service or a qualified assessor look at the whole property if you are unsure how terrain changes the risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspect the building envelope for ember entry

Vegetation management cannot compensate for openings that allow embers inside. CAL FIRE’s home-hardening guidance identifies gutters, vents, eaves, siding, windows, doors, decks and fences as areas to inspect.

Roof and gutters

  • Clean gutters and roof valleys regularly, especially after dry, windy weather and before the fire season.
  • Repair loose or damaged roofing and flashing.
  • Use noncombustible gutter covers or guards that are suitable for the roof and accepted by local requirements. Continue cleaning the cover and gutter; fine debris can still accumulate on top or underneath.

Vents, eaves and openings

Install state fire marshal-approved ember-resistant vents where applicable, or use corrosion-resistant metal mesh that meets the relevant local specification. Vent changes can reduce airflow and affect moisture control, combustion appliances or building-code compliance. Have a building official confirm what is allowed and use a licensed contractor for installation rather than treating a vent retrofit as a simple DIY screen project. Seal gaps around pipes, cables, doors and windows with materials approved for the location, and repair damaged eaves or soffits.

Windows and doors

Check that doors close tightly, weather seals are intact and window screens are secure. Remove combustible objects from immediately outside doors and windows. If you are replacing windows or doors, ask whether the proposed assemblies meet the fire-performance requirements for your jurisdiction; the most suitable specification depends on the local hazard and building code.

Decks, fences and attachments

Remove leaves and stored items from under and on top of decks. Inspect the joints where a fence meets the house: a combustible fence can carry fire directly to siding or eaves. Keep vegetation and rubbish away from the junction, and ask a qualified professional about noncombustible or fire-resistant alternatives when replacement is due.

NSW household preparation actions

NSW Government’s “Prepare your home for bushfire season” page, last updated 18 October 2023, and NSW RFS household guidance emphasize routine preparation rather than a single clearing day.

  1. Clean the roof and gutters. Remove leaves and other debris before the season and after major weather events.
  2. Fit suitable protection. Metal gutter guards and fine metal mesh screens can reduce debris and ember entry when installed to local requirements; they still need inspection and cleaning.
  3. Seal gaps. Check around doors, windows, eaves, vents and other openings for places embers could enter.
  4. Maintain the lawn and trim overhangs. Keep grass managed and cut back branches that overhang the roof or touch structures.
  5. Remove combustible debris. Clear leaf litter, fallen branches, rubbish and stored materials from around the home and under decks.
  6. Prepare water and hoses. Keep hoses long enough to reach around the house. A hose is preparation equipment, not proof that active defence is safe or sufficient during a fire.
  7. Check local permissions. Determine whether vegetation clearing is covered by a local scheme, needs environmental approval or is restricted during the season. Obtain any required permit before burning.

Use a maintenance schedule, not a one-off cleanup

Defensible space changes as plants grow, leaves fall and materials are moved. Put the following checks on a calendar and repeat them after storms, strong winds or periods of extreme fire weather.

When Checks
At the start of the preparation season Clean roof and gutters; inspect vents, eaves, doors, windows, decks and fences; remove dead vegetation; relocate firewood and outdoor combustibles; test hoses and water access.
After wind or storms Remove fallen branches and roof debris; check gutters, screens and roof penetrations for damage; confirm access routes remain clear.
During the growing season Control grass height, trim overhanging branches, thin connected shrubs and remove new dead material.
When fire weather is forecast Move furniture and loose items indoors or well away from the building; close windows and doors; monitor official warnings; review the household departure plan.

Plan to leave early

NSW Government says leaving early is the safest choice and advises deciding in advance when to leave, monitoring warning information and planning with everyone in the household. You do not have to wait for an official warning to depart if conditions are deteriorating or your chosen trigger has been reached. The NSW RFS Bush Fire Household Assessment Tool can help identify property-specific issues, but an assessment does not turn a house into a safe refuge.

Write down the decision points

  • Choose the conditions that trigger departure, such as a fire nearby, a change in the official warning level, smoke and wind making travel difficult, or loss of a planned route.
  • Decide where you will go, how you will get there and which alternate route is available if roads close.
  • Include children, older adults, visitors, pets, livestock and anyone who needs medication or mobility assistance.
  • Keep phones charged, store essential documents and medicines together, and know how official alerts are delivered in your area.

Property preparation may improve a building’s chance of withstanding an ember attack, but it must never be framed as making it safe to stay. If authorities direct evacuation, leave promptly. If you are considering staying to defend a property, obtain jurisdiction-specific advice and understand that this is a high-risk decision requiring substantial preparation, equipment, training and a viable exit plan.

Choosing materials and services

When comparing a hardscape, gutter guard, vent or contractor, judge the option against the actual location and maintenance need rather than a generic “fireproof” label.

Decision factor Questions to ask
Combustibility and ember resistance Does the material reduce fuel or ember entry at this exact location, and is its performance recognized by the relevant authority?
Position relative to the structure Is it being used in the closest 5-foot area, farther vegetation zones or a building opening? The right treatment changes with distance.
Ventilation and code effects Could a screen or cover restrict airflow, create moisture problems or conflict with building, appliance or fire-code requirements?
Maintenance burden Will leaves, needles or fine debris still collect on top of or behind the product? Who will inspect and clean it?
Approval and suitability Has the local building official, fire service or council confirmed that the product and installation are allowed for this property?

Gravel, pavers and concrete are examples of noncombustible hardscape CAL FIRE identifies for the closest zone. They are not a universal prescription: drainage, accessibility, erosion, heritage controls and local landscaping rules still matter. Similarly, a gutter-cleaning or metal-guard installation service can address a practical need, but the work should be evaluated against the local standard and followed by routine inspection.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Clearing only the front yard

Embers can arrive from any direction. Walk the entire perimeter, including the downhill side, rear boundary, side passages, under-deck spaces and roof surfaces.

Leaving mulch or firewood beside the wall

Move these materials out of the closest perimeter first. If storage cannot be relocated, ask the local authority what separation and containment are permitted rather than assuming a cover makes it safe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Installing mesh without checking ventilation

A fine screen that blocks airflow can create a new building problem. Confirm the approved product and opening specification with a building official and use a licensed installer where required.

Assuming a gutter guard eliminates gutter cleaning

Inspect the guard, roof valleys and downspouts on a schedule. Remove the fine debris that accumulates on the guard or passes through it.

Treating a hose as a firefighting plan

Keep a hose long enough to reach around the home as NSW RFS advises, but do not rely on it to make active defence safe. Smoke, radiant heat, falling trees, power lines and rapidly changing wind can make conditions unsurvivable.

Ignoring permission requirements

Before removing trees, clearing native vegetation or burning debris, check the relevant council, environmental authority and fire service. A well-intended cleanup can still breach a local protection rule or permit condition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical property walk-through

  1. Stand at the front door and list every combustible item within the closest perimeter.
  2. Walk around the house, looking up at the roof, gutters, vents, eaves, windows and overhanging branches.
  3. Look under decks, stairs and raised floors for leaf litter, mulch, firewood and stored goods.
  4. Continue outward through the yard and mark connected grass, shrubs and tree branches that create ladder fuels.
  5. Measure or estimate the applicable local zones; use CAL FIRE’s 5-, 30- and 100-foot model only where California guidance applies.
  6. Photograph defects and assign each repair a responsible person and date.
  7. Check permits and approvals before vegetation removal or building alterations.
  8. Finish by reviewing the household departure trigger, destination, transport and communication plan.

What a well-prepared home looks like

The immediate perimeter is free of leaf litter, dry vegetation, mulch and stored combustibles. Roofs, gutters, decks and spaces under structures are clean. Vegetation farther out is maintained and separated so grass, shrubs and tree branches do not form a continuous ladder to the roof. Vents, eaves, windows, doors, siding, decks and fence connections have been inspected, with any technical upgrades approved for the local building. Hoses and access routes are ready, and every household member knows when and where to leave.

That condition is achievable through repeated maintenance, but it is not a guarantee. Bushfire behavior, ember travel, weather, topography and neighboring fuels remain outside a homeowner’s control. Keep the evacuation plan active even when the property is in good condition.
