The most reliable approach is to keep local dimming on, then choose the lowest strength that gives you convincing blacks without distracting halos. Start in Movie, Filmmaker, or Custom mode; use gamma 2.2 in an average-lit room or 2.4/BT.1886 in a dark room; leave Black Level at its calibrated default unless a test pattern shows a reason to change it; and make sure the TV and HDMI source use matching dynamic-range settings. Tune HDR and SDR separately, because their brightness controls often behave differently. Some blooming remains a hardware and algorithm limitation, so the goal is to reduce distractions while preserving shadow detail, not to eliminate halos on every QLED panel.
What blooming and black level mean on a QLED TV
Blooming is the light halo that appears around a bright object against a dark background. Common examples include white subtitles over a night scene, stars in a black sky, a bright logo in a letterboxed movie, or a cursor moving across a dark menu. A QLED LCD uses a backlight divided into dimming zones. When a bright object and nearby dark pixels share one zone, the zone must emit enough light for the object, so some light leaks into the surrounding black area. The TV’s local-dimming algorithm tries to limit that spill, but it cannot control every pixel independently.

Black level is the luminance the TV displays for video black. A setting that is too low can erase near-black steps (black crush), making dark clothing, hair and texture disappear. A setting that is too high lifts black into gray and reduces contrast. The correct value depends on the panel, video range, picture mode, room and source—not on a universal number.
Panel size, firmware, zone layout, subtitle size, viewing angle and ambient light all change what you see. Consequently, there is no authoritative universal blooming percentage or guaranteed black-level improvement figure. Use the following process to find the least distracting result on your particular set.

Prepare a neutral baseline before changing controls
- Select a faithful picture mode. Choose Movie, Filmmaker or Custom. These modes generally start closer to the intended transfer curve than vivid or dynamic modes and make it easier to judge changes.
- Disable picture enhancers temporarily. Turn off contrast boosters, dynamic contrast, artificial black enhancers and similar processing while you establish a baseline. Such controls can hide shadow detail or create pumping that you may mistake for a local-dimming problem. You can audition an enhancer later if you knowingly prefer its effect.
- Watch from your normal seat. Blooming varies with viewing angle, and a setting that looks clean from the center can look different from the side. Make adjustments in the room and seating position where the TV is normally used.
- Allow the TV to reach its normal operating state. Energy-saving and adaptive-brightness features can change luminance during a scene. Disable them while calibrating if they visibly alter the picture, then decide whether their power savings are worth the variation.
Set local dimming for the best compromise
Local dimming is usually worth keeping enabled because it improves dark-scene contrast. The strongest setting is not automatically the best setting, however: higher strength can produce darker surrounding zones while making halos, pumping or zone transitions more obvious.
Use this adjustment sequence
- Open the TV’s picture settings and locate Local Dimming (the label may be Local Contrast or a similar term).
- Start at High. This establishes the maximum contrast your set’s algorithm is designed to deliver.
- Play difficult material: white subtitles over a dark film, a star field, a bright object moving through darkness, and a movie with black letterbox bars.
- Lower the control to Medium or Standard and repeat the same clips. Watch whether halos shrink, brightness changes become smoother, or zone transitions become less distracting.
- Choose the lowest setting that still gives you satisfying black bars and dark-scene contrast. If High looks clean on your content, keep it; if its artifacts attract your eyes, Medium/Standard is the better practical choice.
| Local-dimming choice | What it generally favors | Typical compromise | Useful test |
|---|---|---|---|
| High | Deepest apparent blacks and strongest contrast | More visible halos, pumping or zone transitions around small highlights | White subtitles, stars and isolated lamps in dark scenes |
| Medium/Standard | Less distracting halos and smoother transitions | Blacks may look less deep and contrast may be lower | Compare the same subtitle and letterbox scenes against High |
Do not judge local dimming from a pause screen or a single test image alone. Algorithms can behave differently with motion, scene cuts and subtitle placement. A setting that wins on a static star field may pump during a fast edit, while another that looks slightly lighter in a menu may look steadier in films.
Choose gamma for the room, not for a specification sheet
Gamma controls how the TV maps code values through the mid-tones and shadows. Ambient light changes your perception of those tones, so the appropriate target follows the room:

|---|---|---|
| Average-lit room | 2.2 | Confirm that dark textures remain visible without making the whole picture look washed out |
| Dark room | 2.4 or BT.1886 | Check near-black steps and faces in shadows for lost detail |
After changing gamma, recheck shadow detail. A darker target can make blacks look richer, but if the first near-black steps vanish, you have traded accuracy for crush. Conversely, using a light-room gamma in a dark room can make the image look flatter than intended.

Set Black Level without crushing shadow detail
Leave Black Level at the calibrated default first. The control may appear under different names depending on the manufacturer, but its job is to establish where video black sits. Changing it by eye with ordinary program material is unreliable because the content itself may contain intentionally elevated shadows.
Use a near-black test pattern when adjustment is necessary
- Display a trusted near-black pattern that contains several steps just above black.
- Lower or raise Black Level in small increments while watching the first visible steps, not the overall brightness of the screen.
- Stop when the first intended shadow steps are visible without turning the black background gray.
- View the pattern from your normal position and repeat after selecting the actual content type you watch, because HDR and SDR can expose separate controls.
A value that is too low hides subtle fabric, hair and wall texture. A value that is too high makes letterbox bars and dark scenes look gray. If you cannot see the first steps at all, do not compensate by raising local dimming to an extreme; correct the level and the signal range first.
Calibrate SDR and HDR independently
Many QLED televisions change backlight or brightness behavior automatically when HDR content starts. Menus can also expose separate picture memories for SDR and HDR. A setting that looks correct in an SDR broadcast may therefore be wrong when an HDR disc or game is selected.
Recommended Free Tools
- Play SDR content and set picture mode, local dimming, gamma and Black Level for that mode.
- Start genuine HDR content and wait for the TV to switch into its HDR picture controls.
- Repeat the local-dimming and shadow-detail checks with HDR subtitles, specular highlights and dark scenes.
- Return to SDR and verify that its settings were not changed by the HDR adjustments.
HDR’s automatic brightness behavior can make a black-level comparison misleading if you switch formats mid-test. Always identify which signal is active before deciding that a control made blacks lighter or darker.

Match HDMI dynamic range on the source and TV
An HDMI range mismatch is a common cause of either crushed blacks or lifted blacks. The source and display must agree about whether the signal uses Limited (video) range, Full range, or an automatic mode that correctly detects the source.
- Open the output settings on the player, console, computer or streaming device and note its RGB or dynamic-range selection.
- Open the corresponding HDMI black-level or range setting on the TV input.
- Use Auto on both only when the devices negotiate correctly; otherwise select matching Limited or matching Full values explicitly.
- Display a black-level test pattern and confirm that near-black and bright-white steps are both visible. If shadows disappear, the source may be sending Full while the TV expects Limited, or the reverse.
Do not use the Black Level control to repair a range mismatch. Correct the range at both ends first, then perform the near-black adjustment. A mismatch can also clip bright detail, so inspect highlight steps as well as shadows.
Evaluate the result with repeatable scenes
When two settings look plausible, compare them on the same clips and score the trade-offs rather than relying on a single impression.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Black depth: Inspect letterbox bars and broad dark areas. They should look dark without a gray veil.
- Halo size: Watch the glow around white subtitles, stars and small lamps.
- Shadow retention: Look for hair, clothing folds and background texture just above black.
- Brightness stability: Observe whether the picture pulses when a bright object appears, disappears or moves between zones.
- HDR highlight impact: Ensure that reducing local dimming does not make important HDR highlights look duller than you accept.
Give each setting several minutes of varied content. A local-dimming algorithm may react differently to static subtitles, camera pans and abrupt scene cuts. If a minor halo is visible only when you deliberately search for it, while a stronger setting causes repeated pumping, the calmer setting is usually the better everyday choice.

Troubleshoot the most common symptoms
Subtitles glow more than the picture
Large, bright subtitles can illuminate several adjacent zones even on a well-performing panel. Compare High with Medium/Standard local dimming using the same subtitle track. If the halo is still distracting, a less aggressive local-dimming setting is the appropriate compromise; changing gamma or Black Level will not remove a zone that must light the text.
Black bars look gray
First confirm that local dimming is enabled and that the correct picture mode and signal type are active. Then verify HDMI range matching and inspect Black Level with a near-black pattern. Raising Black Level without correcting a range mismatch can make the bars lighter while leaving shadow detail wrong.
Dark detail disappears
Check for an overly low Black Level, a dark-room gamma used in a brighter room, or a source/TV range mismatch. Restore the default Black Level, use gamma 2.2 in an average-lit room, and retest the near-black steps before changing other controls.
Blacks look gray after switching to HDR
HDR may use a separate picture memory and automatic brightness behavior. Enter the HDR settings while HDR content is playing, then repeat the local-dimming and Black Level checks there. Do not assume the SDR values carried over.
Best Value
The picture pumps during scene changes
Compare High with Medium/Standard local dimming on scenes that cut between bright and dark shots. If the lower setting stabilizes brightness without unacceptable loss of contrast, keep it. Also disable adaptive or energy-saving brightness controls that visibly change luminance during playback.
Account for hardware, firmware and viewing conditions
Blooming is partly a physical limit of the backlight and partly a software decision about how zones respond. A larger screen can place a bright subtitle across more zones; a firmware update can alter transition timing; and a side-seat view can make halos easier to see. These variables explain why another owner’s preferred level may not transfer to your set.
Ambient light also changes perceived black level. Reflections and room illumination can make a genuinely dark bar look gray, while a dark room makes small lifts or crush more apparent. Make the final decision under normal viewing conditions rather than under a phone camera or with all lights off if that is not how you watch.

Home adjustments can address local-dimming behavior, gamma choice, Black Level and signal-range errors without special equipment. If accurate grayscale, gamma tracking and shadow reproduction remain important after those checks, professional calibration is the next step. As Adam Babcock, author of an RTINGS calibration guide, explains: “While a true calibration requires specialized equipment to measure the exact colors and light that your TV produces, there are plenty of things you can adjust at home without any special equipment.”
Calibration cannot redesign the zone layout or make a QLED behave like a self-emissive display. It can, however, identify whether the remaining problem is grayscale, transfer-curve tracking, signal range or the panel’s inherent blooming behavior, preventing endless changes to the wrong control.
A practical decision rule
Keep local dimming enabled. Use High when its deeper blacks and stronger HDR impact outweigh visible halos; use Medium or Standard when subtitles, pumping or zone transitions distract you. Set gamma to match the room, leave Black Level at default until a near-black pattern proves otherwise, match HDMI ranges exactly, and tune SDR and HDR in their own modes. Once those fundamentals are correct, any remaining glow is likely a characteristic of the TV’s hardware and algorithm rather than a hidden setting you have failed to find.
