The first setting to test is Local Dimming (also called Auto Local Dimming or a similar name). Display the same dark scene with bright subtitles, stars, or a small lamp, then compare every available dimming level. Keep the setting that gives you the best balance between less visible glow, bright-detail intensity, and shadow detail.
There is no universal “best” level. Mini LED televisions use different zone layouts, processing, firmware, and menu names. A setting that suppresses a halo on one model can make tiny highlights dimmer, while another model may look cleaner with less aggressive dimming.

What blooming and halos are
Blooming is a visible glow around a bright object against a dark background. You might see a pale cloud around white subtitles, a streetlight in a night scene, stars in space, or a bright logo on a black screen. The glow occurs because a backlight-dimming zone is larger than the object it is illuminating; neighboring dark pixels in that zone receive some of the backlight as well.
A halo is the same problem viewed as an edge or ring around the highlight. It is most obvious when your room is dark, the picture has high contrast, and a small bright object moves across a dark area. A faint glow that disappears during normal viewing is different from a fixed bright patch or broad screen unevenness.

Local dimming is the television’s real-time attempt to vary backlight brightness behind different parts of the image. Sony describes Auto Local Dimming as analyzing picture luminance continuously and adjusting backlight brightness; the available choices depend on the model. Read your set’s on-screen help or support page before assuming that a label has the same meaning as it does on another brand.
Use local dimming as a controlled experiment
1. Find the dimming control
Open the picture settings while the troublesome content is playing. Depending on the manufacturer and software version, the control can be under Picture, Brightness, Expert settings, or a submenu named Local Dimming or Auto Local Dimming. Menu paths and labels can change by model, region, picture mode, and firmware, so do not treat a path shown for another television as universal.
If the option is greyed out, switch from a special preset such as a game, Dolby Vision, or filmmaker mode and check again. Some modes expose fewer controls, and some inputs have their own picture profile. Make a note of the input and picture mode you are changing so you can reproduce the comparison.
2. Start with the same difficult scene
- Choose a scene with a small, bright object on a large dark field: white subtitles over a night shot, a star field, a torch, or a bright title card.
- Pause the image, if possible, so motion processing and scene changes do not confuse the comparison.
- View from your normal seat at your normal night-time brightness. Looking from an extreme angle or standing close to the panel can exaggerate differences that you will not see while watching.
- Wait several seconds after each change. The television may recalculate zone brightness after the scene or setting changes.
- Compare the same object in the same frame with each available local-dimming level.
3. Compare the available levels, not just one “high” setting
TCL’s support guidance lists Off, Normal, and High for its Mini LED local-dimming control. It says that Normal balances brightness and control, preserving high local brightness while allowing some halos in extreme scenes. High can make halos less noticeable, but aggressive control can also reduce the brightness of very small light-emitting objects that are smaller than a dimming zone. TCL’s wording is: “In normal mode, local dimming balances brightness and control, resulting in high local brightness but with some halo effects in extreme scenes.” Read the manufacturer’s explanation at TCL’s MiniLED Local Dimming Adjustment Options.

| Level listed by TCL | What to check on your screen | When it may suit you |
|---|---|---|
| Off | Use it as a baseline for the same scene; TCL lists the option but does not characterize its halo or highlight result in the cited guidance. | Useful for establishing how much the dimming algorithm changes the image. |
| Normal | Balances local brightness and control; some halos can remain in extreme scenes. | A starting point when you want bright highlights without the most aggressive suppression. |
| High | Can reduce noticeable halos, while very small bright objects may become less bright. | Worth testing when halo visibility is more distracting than peak intensity of tiny highlights. |
Do not assume that “High” always produces a darker or better picture. Judge the halo and the object that causes it together. If a star disappears, a subtitle becomes grey, or a specular reflection loses its punch, the setting may have solved one symptom at the cost of detail.
Choose the setting with a four-part check
Use the same test frame and score each level informally against four outcomes:
- Halo visibility: How far does the glow extend beyond the bright object, and is it visible from your normal seat?
- Small-highlight brightness: Do subtitles, stars, LEDs, and reflections remain bright enough, or do they pulse and dim?
- Shadow detail: Do nearby dark textures remain visible, or does the image become crushed and less nuanced?
- Real viewing content: Does the change help the films, sports, games, and streaming shows you actually watch?
Write down the result for each picture mode you use. A level that works for a dark movie can be distracting in a game HUD or a news channel with permanent white graphics. If your television stores settings per input or per mode, repeat the check where the problem occurs instead of expecting one global adjustment to cover everything.

This is a targeted troubleshooting step, not a general rule that Low or Off removes blooming on every Sony television—or on other brands. Apply it only when your symptom matches the documented uneven-background case. For a conventional halo beside a subtitle or star, run the full level comparison instead.
Tell a halo from persistent screen unevenness
Halo that follows a bright object
A halo changes position as the subtitle, star, or lamp moves. It may grow or shrink when the object changes size. This behavior points you toward local-dimming comparisons and content-based testing.
Bright patch that stays in one place
A fixed patch, vertical band, or broad area that remains visible when the scene changes is not established by the cited guidance as ordinary blooming. Photograph the effect using the same input and picture mode, then consult the exact model’s manufacturer support page. Avoid opening the set or changing service-menu values; those controls can alter calibration and may complicate warranty support.

Use the Sony procedure above only if you own the specified model and the symptom matches. If Low or Off changes the appearance but does not remove a persistent patch, record whether the effect appears on the television’s built-in menus, multiple inputs, and different content. That information helps the manufacturer distinguish processing behavior from a panel or backlight issue.

Check automatic picture features without treating them as a cure
Some compatible Sony televisions use an ambient-light sensor to adjust picture brightness or color automatically. Sony explains these automatic picture and sound adjustments in its Help Guide. A changing room or sensor response can make a glow seem more or less conspicuous, but the guidance does not establish ambient-light sensing as a fix for the underlying halo.
For a clean comparison, temporarily keep automatic brightness or energy-saving behavior consistent while you test local dimming. Otherwise, the television may raise or lower the whole picture between tests and make a local-dimming change appear larger than it is. After you have selected a dimming level, restore your preferred automatic feature and check the scene once more under ordinary viewing conditions.

Subtitles over a night scene
Use a subtitle line that remains on screen for several seconds. Look at the empty black area immediately above and beside the letters, then inspect the letters themselves. High dimming may tighten the glow while making the text less intense; Normal may keep the text brighter with a wider transition.

Stars or small lights
Pause on a star field, city skyline, or holiday lights. Count neither zones nor stars; the useful question is whether the tiny points remain visible and stable. The cited manufacturer guidance supports a qualitative trade-off, not a universal zone-count or brightness measurement.
Best Value
Bright object on a uniform field
A white logo or window against a flat grey or colored background can reveal uneven transitions. If the entire background appears to change shade near the object, compare lower dimming levels and, where applicable, the model-specific Sony advice. Do not diagnose a defect from one test pattern alone.
Mixed dark and bright movie frame
Use a normal film frame containing faces, clothing, and a practical light. Check whether shadow textures remain visible after selecting High. A setting that looks excellent on a black test screen may remove low-level detail in real scenes.
Why one television behaves differently from another
Mini LED is a backlight approach, not a single standardized implementation. Manufacturers can choose different numbers and sizes of dimming zones, optical layers, algorithms, response speeds, and protection limits. The same label—High, Strong, Advanced, or Dynamic—therefore does not guarantee the same result.

Software updates can also change menu placement or processing behavior. Record your model number, region, current firmware, input, and picture mode when seeking support. Sony explicitly notes that available Auto Local Dimming options depend on the model; use the exact support page for your set rather than copying a review’s menu path.
A repeatable setup procedure
- Let the television warm up normally and disable any temporary demo or retail mode.
- Select the input and picture mode in which you notice blooming.
- Open Picture settings and locate Local Dimming or Auto Local Dimming.
- Play one paused dark scene with a small bright highlight.
- Record the current level and observe halo spread, highlight intensity, and shadow detail.
- Change only the dimming level, wait for the picture to settle, and inspect the identical frame.
- Repeat for every available level, including Off when offered.
- Test a second scene from your normal library to ensure the result is not specific to one frame.
- Choose the level that minimizes distraction without unacceptable loss of tiny highlights or dark detail.
- Repeat the chosen setting on other inputs or picture modes only if those modes use separate profiles.
Common mistakes and how to recover
- Changing several controls at once: Restore the previous values and test one setting at a time; otherwise you cannot identify what helped.
- Judging from a paused black screen only: Include subtitles, stars, faces, and ordinary mixed-contrast scenes before deciding.
- Using another model’s menu instruction: Check the exact model and region because labels and options vary.
- Assuming a brighter picture is less blooming: Whole-picture brightness and local-dimming behavior are different controls. Keep the room and overall picture level consistent during the comparison.
- Chasing a fixed patch with picture settings: If the mark stays in one location across content, document it and contact the manufacturer rather than repeatedly changing presets.
- Expecting an accessory to remove the artifact: The cited guidance identifies built-in television settings, not a model-independent external product, as the practical adjustment.
When to stop adjusting
Stop when you have tested the available dimming levels on representative content and selected the compromise you can live with. A small amount of glow in an extreme scene can be an acceptable trade for bright, stable subtitles and preserved shadow detail. If the effect is visible as a stationary patch, appears in menus, or worsens abruptly after a physical event, move from picture adjustment to the manufacturer’s model-specific support and warranty process.
