You can lower a Bitcoin mine’s electricity cost without unnecessary downtime by working in this order: measure the all-in rate and facility load, reduce joules per terahash, cut cooling waste, renegotiate flexible power supply, and curtail only when the value of stopping exceeds the mining revenue you would lose. There is no universal best tactic: the right mix depends on your tariff, ASIC fleet, cooling design, site conditions and required uptime.
What actually drives a Bitcoin mine’s power bill
Electricity is usually the primary operating cost of cryptocurrency mining. The bill covers more than the ASICs themselves: power also runs fans, pumps, heat rejection, networking, controls and other facility systems. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) described both machine consumption and cooling load as central parts of mining electricity use in its February 1, 2024 analysis.

For cost decisions, separate the problem into three controllable variables:
- Effective electricity price: the amount you pay per kilowatt-hour after energy charges, demand charges, capacity charges, transmission, distribution, taxes, credits and contract settlements.
- Energy consumed per unit of work: how many joules each ASIC uses for each terahash of computing power, plus the facility energy required to keep it operating.
- When the load runs: whether machines continue mining during expensive periods or are curtailed in exchange for a tariff credit, demand-response payment or other grid-service value.
These levers interact. A highly efficient miner can still be uneconomic on an expensive tariff; a cheap power contract can be overwhelmed by inefficient hardware; and curtailment lowers the power bill only by giving up mining production during the curtailed interval.

EIA’s preliminary 2024 estimate put U.S. cryptocurrency-mining electricity consumption at 0.6% to 2.3% of total U.S. electricity use. That range is for U.S. cryptocurrency mining, not Bitcoin alone or global mining, and it should not be treated as a current measurement. EIA also said its emergency survey collection used for the analysis was discontinued, so later comparisons require care.
Measure your baseline before changing anything
Do not select new ASICs, a cooling retrofit or a demand-response program from a nameplate specification alone. First establish what one month of operation costs and how much production is available to protect.
Calculate the effective electricity rate
Use invoices and interval-meter data for the same settlement period. Divide the total amount attributable to the mining load by the metered kilowatt-hours for that load:
effective rate = (energy charges + demand and capacity charges + delivery fees + taxes − credits) ÷ metered kWh
Keep a separate line for one-time connection fees, equipment leases and penalties. A contract advertised with a low energy price can have a materially higher all-in result after those items. If the utility applies a monthly demand charge, record the interval and peak value that caused it; reducing a short peak can be worth more than shaving a small amount from every hour.
Meter the miners and the facility separately
Install or use revenue-grade metering at the utility interconnection, the mining electrical distribution and, where practical, major cooling subsystems. At minimum, collect:
- 15-minute or hourly kWh and kW readings;
- ASIC count, model, firmware profile and operating frequency;
- hash rate and rejected-share rate;
- inlet and outlet temperatures, fan speeds and cooling-system status;
- downtime minutes, restart failures and maintenance events; and
- tariff period, energy price, demand charge and any curtailment payment.
The difference between utility-meter energy and ASIC-meter energy is your facility overhead. Track it as a percentage and as kilowatts. A change that lowers ASIC draw but raises fan or pump consumption may not lower the site’s total cost.

“No downtime” can mean different things. Write the requirement as an operating rule, such as continuous operation, a maximum number of curtailed hours per month, or availability for a specific customer or pool. Also identify whether a controlled shutdown is acceptable while an unplanned trip is not. This distinction determines whether demand response is a viable savings source.
Lower the price you pay for electricity
Power sourcing and contract design can reduce cost without changing the machines. The benefit is site- and market-specific, and access to low-cost electricity may not remain available.

Audit every tariff component
Ask the utility or supplier for the current tariff sheet and settlement rules. Confirm:
- time-of-use energy prices and seasonal changes;
- real-time or indexed pricing methodology;
- monthly demand and coincident-peak charges;
- minimum-load, take-or-pay and power-factor provisions;
- capacity, transmission and ancillary-service charges;
- curtailment credits and the events that make them payable; and
- notice, performance and penalty requirements.
Model a full billing year rather than multiplying one favorable month. If your agreement is indexed to wholesale prices, use the actual settlement interval and include basis, congestion and uplift charges where applicable.

Compare fixed, indexed and flexible arrangements
| Arrangement | Potential advantage | Risk or limitation | Questions to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed-price supply | Predictable operating cost and easier mining-margin planning. | You may pay above market during low-price periods and lose access to some market credits. | What volume is fixed, what is pass-through, and what are early-termination terms? |
| Indexed or real-time supply | Can capture low wholesale prices and make curtailment decisions from transparent market data. | High-price intervals can erase mining margin quickly. | Which index and settlement interval apply, and are congestion or basis charges included? |
| Flexible-load contract | May provide credits or payments for reducing load when the grid needs it. | Payments depend on eligibility, baseline calculations, event frequency and performance. | How is the baseline set, how much notice is provided, and what penalties apply? |
| Direct or dedicated supply | Can connect a mine with underused generation or a negotiated supply arrangement. | Interconnection, transmission, curtailment, credit and regulatory risks remain. | Is the delivered cost truly all-in, and how durable is the supply arrangement? |
Evaluate underused or otherwise-wasted energy carefully
EIA has described miners locating near underused generation, entering direct supply arrangements and consuming energy that might otherwise be curtailed or wasted. Such projects can have a favorable energy price, but the price is only one part of the investment case. Check interconnection rights, transmission availability, seasonal output, permitting, fuel or water constraints, environmental obligations and the term of the agreement. A low introductory rate is not evidence of a durable supply source.
Reduce energy use with ASIC efficiency
ASIC efficiency is normally expressed in joules per terahash (J/TH). Lower J/TH means less energy for the same nominal hash rate. Compare machines on that metric rather than comparing only their advertised terahashes per second.
Use a replacement model, not a headline specification
For each candidate upgrade, calculate the change in daily energy cost and the capital required:
daily energy cost = site kW × 24 × effective rate
Recommended Free Tools
energy savings from an upgrade = (old J/TH − new J/TH) × operating hash rate × operating hours
Keep units consistent: convert joules to kilowatt-hours and use the measured operating hash rate, not an optimistic specification. Include acquisition price, shipping, installation, electrical work, firmware or pool changes, taxes, financing, residual value, expected service life and the cost of disposing of or redeploying existing units.
Compare the upgrade with simply operating the current fleet during cheaper intervals. A machine with a better J/TH rating may not recover its cost if it runs only a small number of hours, if the tariff is already low, or if the site cannot supply the required voltage and heat rejection.

Test efficiency at the intended operating profile
Efficiency varies with frequency, voltage, temperature, firmware and pool settings. Record each model’s:
- wall-meter kW, not only software-reported consumption;
- stable hash rate and rejected shares;
- J/TH at the chosen frequency and voltage;
- inlet temperature and fan power;
- restart behavior after a controlled power cycle; and
- failure rate and service requirements.
Underclocking can reduce J/TH or total draw, but it also reduces hash rate. Treat it as a selectable operating mode and compare the resulting revenue and uptime, rather than assuming lower wattage is automatically cheaper.
Cut cooling and facility overhead without creating thermal downtime
Cooling is part of the mining load. Improvements should be judged by total facility kW and by the number of hours miners remain within their safe temperature range.
Find the cooling system’s avoidable load
Trend cooling kW against outdoor temperature, inlet temperature, miner load and humidity. Look for fans, pumps or chillers that continue operating at a fixed speed when the mining load falls. Correct control sequencing, blocked filters, leaking ductwork and recirculation before buying larger equipment.
Match airflow to the heat produced
Separate hot and cold air paths, seal bypass openings and keep intake air away from exhaust. Clean filters and heat exchangers on a schedule based on measured pressure drop and temperature rise. In hot or humid climates, calculate the energy penalty of dehumidification or mechanical refrigeration instead of assuming outside-air cooling is always cheaper.
Compare cooling designs on total cost
| Approach | Where it can help | What to measure | Uptime concern |
|---|---|---|---|
| Air cooling with optimized airflow | Existing facilities with manageable outdoor conditions and strong containment. | Fan kW, temperature spread, filter pressure and recirculation. | Dust, hot spots and extreme weather can cause throttling or trips. |
| Evaporative or indirect cooling | Sites where evaporation can reduce mechanical refrigeration. | Water use, pump/fan kW, humidity control and seasonal performance. | Water quality, freezing and high-humidity events require a fallback plan. |
| Liquid or immersion cooling | High-density deployments or sites seeking controlled component temperatures. | Pump and heat-rejection kW, fluid maintenance and service labor. | Leaks, fluid compatibility and specialized maintenance can extend recovery time. |
Do not claim a cooling retrofit will reduce the bill until the measured facility overhead falls at the same hash rate and ambient conditions. Also preserve N+1 capacity where a single fan, pump, chiller or control failure would otherwise shut down a whole row.
Use curtailment only when its value exceeds lost mining revenue
Demand response and high-price curtailment can improve economics for flexible mines, but powering down miners necessarily reduces mining uptime during the event. Curtailment is therefore an economic or grid-service trade, not a way to keep machines mining continuously while they are switched off.
Calculate the event decision
For each settlement interval, compare:
value of curtailing = energy cost avoided + demand-response or ancillary-service credit − event costs and penalties
value of continuing = expected Bitcoin mining revenue − electricity and variable operating cost

Curtail only when the first value is greater than the second, using conservative estimates for pool fees, network difficulty, Bitcoin price, curtailment payment, restart labor and any production lost during ramp-down and ramp-up. Include the effect on demand-charge peaks and the possibility that an event lasts longer than forecast.
Protect critical uptime while shedding flexible load
- Classify loads into critical controls, networking, safety systems, cooling auxiliaries and miners that can be stopped.
- Set a minimum energized fleet for communications, monitoring and restart sequencing.
- Define staged shutdown groups so the site can reduce a target number of kilowatts rather than tripping an entire facility.
- Automate event start, ramp rate, verification, return-to-service delay and alarm escalation.
- Test the sequence during a planned exercise and record actual response time and recovered hash rate.
Keep a manual override, but limit access and log every override. A failed automatic restart, thermal soak or pool reconnection can make a short event cost more than its electricity credit.
Understand program rules before enrolling
ERCOT’s December 6, 2022 release described an initial voluntary curtailment program for large flexible customers, including bitcoin-mining facilities. That announcement is a historical example, not a current operating rule. Confirm present eligibility, baseline methodology, event notice, measurement, settlement and penalty provisions with the relevant market operator or utility.
Riot’s 2026 second-quarter filing provides an operator example: it says the company powers down and returns power to the utility when available curtailment credits exceed the Bitcoin mining revenue it would otherwise earn, and it describes ancillary-service credits in ERCOT and MISO. Those results are company-specific and do not establish what another mine will qualify for or earn.

A practical implementation sequence
- Build a 30- to 90-day baseline. Reconcile utility invoices, interval data, ASIC telemetry, cooling kW, hash rate and downtime.
- Calculate all-in cost by interval. Include every tariff component and separate credits from recurring prices.
- Rank the largest avoidable costs. Identify whether energy price, demand peaks, poor J/TH or cooling overhead dominates.
- Run no-capital controls first. Correct airflow, remove unnecessary idle equipment, tune set points within manufacturer limits and schedule maintenance.
- Model operating modes. Compare normal mining, efficient underclocking, partial fleet operation and full curtailment for each tariff period.
- Validate an ASIC upgrade on the wall. Test representative units under the intended ambient and cooling conditions before ordering a fleet.
- Negotiate power terms with measured data. Show your load shape, flexibility, minimum load and response time; ask how each proposed credit is calculated.
- Pilot automation. Use a small group of miners, simulate an event, verify safe shutdown and measure time to stable hash rate after restoration.
- Set approval thresholds. Require a documented margin over expected mining revenue before an automated curtailment action.
- Review monthly. Recalculate the baseline after hardware, tariff, pool, firmware, weather or network changes.
Monitoring that preserves uptime while cutting cost
A cost program needs operational alarms, not just a monthly bill. Create dashboards for:
- effective electricity cost per kWh and per terahash-hour;
- ASIC J/TH by model and operating mode;
- facility overhead percentage;
- hash rate, rejected shares and pool disconnects;
- inlet temperature, humidity and thermal throttling;
- available curtailment capacity and event status;
- restart success rate and time to recovered hash rate; and
- cost avoided or credit earned per event.
Alert on drift rather than waiting for a trip. Examples include rising J/TH at unchanged frequency, a widening temperature spread between rows, cooling kW increasing while hash rate is flat, or a demand peak approaching the tariff threshold.
Current market examples and how to interpret them
Riot’s reported curtailment practice
Riot’s 2026 second-quarter filing says it compares curtailment credits with the Bitcoin mining revenue it would otherwise receive, then powers down and returns power when the credits are higher. It also reports ancillary-service credits in ERCOT and MISO. Treat this as a description of one company’s contracts, sites and accounting period, not as an industry-average return.
Ionic Digital’s reported power strategy
An Ionic Digital 2026 filing reports the use of power purchase agreements, demand-response programs and curtailment when power prices make mining unprofitable. The filing also reports site-specific power costs. Those figures cannot be used as typical rates for another geography or facility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsEnel North America and Braiins announcement
On July 14, 2026, Enel North America and Braiins announced Mining Energy Intelligence, described as combining mining software with demand-response market access and automated curtailment. The announcement is vendor-reported product information. Before relying on it, confirm present availability, eligible markets, geography, technical integration, baseline rules, pricing and contract obligations.
Common mistakes that raise cost or damage availability
- Using the advertised energy rate: ignoring delivery, demand, capacity and settlement charges hides the real price.
- Comparing ASICs by terahash alone: hash rate without J/TH does not show energy efficiency.
- Counting only miner watts: fans, pumps, chillers and controls can materially change site consumption.
- Assuming a low-cost contract is permanent: supply, interconnection and market conditions can change.
- Curtailed mining without a revenue test: a credit is not automatically greater than the Bitcoin production forgone.
- Ignoring restart costs: power cycling can expose weak power supplies, networking faults, pool delays or thermal instability.
- Over-optimizing temperature: a lower set point may consume more cooling energy without improving reliability.
- Using historical program rules: ERCOT’s 2022 announcement must not be treated as current eligibility or settlement guidance.
- Applying another operator’s economics: SEC filing figures reflect that operator’s sites, contracts, fleet and accounting period.
Decision checklist
- Do we know the all-in electricity cost for each settlement interval?
- Are utility, ASIC and cooling loads separately metered?
- What is the measured J/TH of each fleet segment at its actual operating profile?
- How much facility overhead is avoidable without reducing thermal margin?
- What uptime is mandatory, and how many controlled hours can be sacrificed?
- Does each curtailment event pay more than expected mining revenue and event costs?
- Have tariff baselines, notice periods, penalties and current eligibility been confirmed in writing?
- Has the shutdown and restart sequence been tested under realistic conditions?
- Does an ASIC upgrade beat firmware tuning, cooling work or a contract change after capital costs?
- When will the model be recalculated for Bitcoin price, network difficulty, weather, tariff and fleet changes?
The defensible path is to make the mine measurable, then choose the smallest intervention that improves cost while meeting the written uptime requirement. Efficiency upgrades and cooling controls can reduce consumption continuously; contract changes can lower the delivered price; curtailment can add value only when the mine is genuinely able to trade operating hours for a larger credit or avoided cost.
