To reduce battery drain on a Samsung Galaxy phone, first check which apps or features are using power, then change the settings that match the cause. Start at Settings > Battery and inspect battery usage or the battery graph; menu names vary by model and software version. Samsung does not publish a guaranteed runtime gain for these adjustments, so treat them as ways to identify and limit unnecessary consumption—not a promise of extra hours.
Find what is using your Galaxy battery
Open Settings > Battery and look for battery usage details or the battery graph. Review which apps are consuming power and when the drain happens. A high-use app may be expected if you used it heavily; an app you barely opened that runs in the background is a stronger candidate for action.

Samsung’s menu labels and available controls vary across Galaxy models and software versions. Follow the closest Battery or Device care options visible on your phone. Samsung notes that environmental conditions, background apps, and battery condition can all contribute to faster drain (Samsung UK battery-drain guidance).

Put rarely used apps to sleep
Samsung’s battery settings let you limit background activity for apps you do not use often. Sleeping apps may have delayed background refreshes or notifications. That can be a reasonable trade for a rarely used app, but not for one you rely on for timely messages, safety alerts, authentication codes, or work notifications.

Use Deep sleeping selectively
Deep sleeping apps do not run until you open them manually. This is a stronger restriction than ordinary sleeping and is best reserved for apps that do not need to update or alert you in the background. Check your phone’s Battery settings for sleeping-app controls; the exact path varies by version. Samsung describes these options in its Galaxy battery-drain guidance.
Choose a power-saving level that fits the situation
Power saving can limit background activity and certain features to help extend use between charges. It is useful when you need to make a charge last, but it can affect performance, connectivity, and background updates.
| Choice | What it is for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Power saving | Routine use when you want to reduce consumption | Restricts some background activity and features; effects depend on the phone’s settings and software |
| Maximum power saving | A low-battery situation where preserving remaining charge matters most | Applies stronger restrictions and limits available apps or features |
Turn the mode off when you need the functions it restricts. Samsung’s Power saving guide describes the mode as reducing background activity and limiting certain features.

- Brightness: Use adaptive brightness or lower the display level when comfortable. Keep it high enough to read safely in your surroundings.
- Screen timeout: Choose a shorter time before the screen turns off when idle.
- Dark mode: On Galaxy phones with AMOLED displays, dark mode can reduce display power use.
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth: Turn them off when you are not using them, but do not disable a connection you need for calls, accessories, or other services.
These adjustments trade convenience or visibility for potentially lower demand; the effect depends on how you use the phone. Samsung covers display and connectivity suggestions in its Galaxy Power saving guidance.

Consider the Light performance profile
Where available, Samsung’s Light performance profile prioritizes battery efficiency over processing speed for everyday tasks. It may suit routine use, but a performance-sensitive workload can feel slower, and availability or effects vary by model. Look under Settings > Device care or the performance-profile controls on your phone; the path and labels are not universal. Samsung discusses the profile in its Power saving guide.

New phone or recent reset
A new Galaxy phone may use more power during the first few days as apps and services optimize. If the drain continues beyond that period, check battery usage for specific apps or conditions rather than assuming it will resolve on its own. Samsung’s new-phone battery guidance explains Adaptive battery and setup-related optimization.
Weak mobile signal
Battery use can rise when the phone is in an area with poor reception. If the drain is concentrated in places where signal is weak, compare usage in a better-covered area before changing unrelated settings.

Network-dependent 5G use
Some network configurations can use more power when 5G data operates alongside legacy-network connectivity. This is not a universal property of every 5G network or Galaxy phone; carrier coverage and configuration matter. Samsung describes the conditions covered by its US guidance at Samsung’s 5G battery-use page. Do not disable 5G automatically if you rely on it or if your local network behaves differently.

Update apps and run built-in device checks
- Update apps through the store you use. Samsung recommends keeping apps current as part of battery troubleshooting.
- Open Settings > Device care (or the similarly named device-optimization section) and select Optimize now, if available. This can close background apps and check device condition.
- Recheck the Battery usage screen after using the phone normally. If one app remains an outlier, adjust its background permissions or sleeping status rather than installing an unverified battery-cleaner app.
Samsung’s regional menus may differ; its battery-drain troubleshooting page and new-phone guidance provide the relevant support context.
Know when settings are not enough
Battery capacity declines with repeated charging and discharging, and software settings cannot restore lost capacity. If the phone’s battery condition is poor or unusual drain persists after you have checked apps, background activity, and signal conditions, use Samsung Members’ support or reporting options, or contact Samsung support for model- and region-specific service advice.
Be cautious of unexpected third-party alerts claiming that your battery is draining fast and urging you to install another app. Samsung warns that deceptive alerts can be used to lure users into downloading software; use built-in Device care and Samsung support instead (Samsung guidance on fake battery alerts).
