To cut the most battery and data use, first unfollow games or teams you do not need. If you want no score activity at all, turn off Live Activities for the Sports app in Settings. If you want to keep live scores, leave Live Activities enabled but keep More Frequent Updates off, use Wi‑Fi or a strong cellular signal, select 5G Auto where available, and use Low Power Mode when runtime matters more than background convenience. Then check Settings > Battery > View All Battery Usage to see whether Sports is actually a major contributor on your iPhone.
What Apple Sports Live Activities are using
A Live Activity is a system surface that keeps current information from an app visible, such as a score on the Lock Screen or in the Dynamic Island. A sports app can refresh that activity with game information while the iPhone has network connectivity. Apple’s developer documentation describes these updates as being delivered through ActivityKit and ActivityKit push notifications. Those refreshes require some combination of app processing, network-radio activity and display or notification wake-ups.

The exact cost is not fixed. It changes with the number of games being followed, how long each activity remains active, the app’s update behavior, Wi‑Fi versus cellular service, signal quality, notification frequency and the iPhone model. Apple has not published a universal battery percentage or megabytes-per-game figure for Apple Sports Live Activities.

Live Activities are also different from simply opening the Sports app. Turning the feature off removes the persistent score surface and its associated update path, but you can still launch the app and check a score manually. Other apps, normal screen use and a weak signal can continue to consume power even after Sports Live Activities are disabled.

Choose the right trade-off
There are three practical ways to configure the feature. Your choice depends on whether immediate scores or maximum runtime is more important.
| Configuration | Score immediacy | Battery exposure | Cellular-data exposure | Manual checking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Follow only essential games; Live Activities on; More Frequent Updates off | Live score surface for selected games | Lowest impact while retaining live scores | Limited to selected activities and available network updates | Low |
| Live Activities off for Sports | No Live Activity score surface | Removes this activity’s background updates | Removes its Live Activity network traffic | Higher; open the app when you want a score |
| More Frequent Updates on | More frequent refreshes | Higher; MacRumors’ documentation of iOS 16.2 behavior says it drains an iPhone battery faster | Potentially higher because the app requests updates more often | Lowest, but at the highest resource cost |
For most people who want scores without unnecessary drain, the first row is the sensible starting point. Use the second row for travel, weak coverage or a long day away from a charger. The third option is for occasions when getting a faster refresh is worth accepting extra battery use; it is not a conservation setting.
Think of the controls as separate levers. Unfollowing reduces how many activities can be active. Disabling Live Activities removes the Sports surface altogether. More Frequent Updates changes refresh frequency for the activities you keep. Network and power settings affect the cost of whatever remains.
Step 1: Unfollow games and teams you do not need
Open the Sports app and remove games or teams that no longer matter to you. The exact menu names can differ between iOS releases, but look for the game or team’s follow control and choose the option to unfollow or stop following it.
Unfollowing matters because it prevents an unwanted activity from being started by the Sports app’s own following workflow. It is more targeted than disabling every Live Activity: you can retain scores for one important game while removing several others.
- Keep only games you are actively watching or need to monitor.
- Remove completed games and temporary follows after an event ends.
- Review team follows before a tournament or travel day so old schedules do not continue creating activity.
- If you follow a team for a single match, remove that follow as soon as the match is over rather than waiting for the schedule to clear itself.
Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines say sports apps should provide controls such as unfollowing a game or team. If the app does not give you a usable control, disable its Live Activities permission in Settings as described next.
Step 2: Turn off Live Activities when you want no score activity
To stop the Sports app from presenting score activities, open Settings, find the relevant sports app, open its Live Activities controls and turn the feature off if that control is shown. Apple confirms that Live Activities can be deactivated for an app in Settings. The location of an app’s page and the wording can vary by iOS release.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open Settings.
- Scroll to the Sports app, or use Settings search to find it.
- Open Live Activities.
- Turn the permission off.
This is the clearest choice when you are trying to eliminate Sports-related activity rather than merely reduce it. You can still open the Sports app manually for a score; disabling Live Activities does not remove the app itself. If you later want a score on the Lock Screen again, return to the same control and re-enable it, then follow only the game you need.
There may be separate notification controls elsewhere in Settings. Turning off Live Activities does not automatically silence every notification category from the Sports app, so review notifications as well if alerts are part of the problem.
Step 3: Leave More Frequent Updates off
More Frequent Updates is an app-level Live Activities option. When enabled, it allows more frequent refreshes. MacRumors’ documentation of the behavior introduced with iOS 16.2 says the setting increases update frequency and drains an iPhone battery faster.
- Open Settings.
- Open the Sports app’s settings page.
- Tap Live Activities.
- Make sure More Frequent Updates is off.
Leave it off for normal score tracking. Turn it on only when unusually fast refreshes are worth the additional battery and possible cellular activity, then turn it back off after the event. Because the option is per app, check the Sports app specifically rather than assuming a change to another app’s Live Activities setting applies everywhere.

If you are trying to diagnose drain, make this the first single change. Compare a similar game day with the option off, then test other controls separately. That gives you a clearer indication of whether refresh frequency, rather than coverage or notifications, is responsible for the change.
Step 4: Use the least demanding network connection available
Prefer Wi‑Fi
When a reliable Wi‑Fi network is available, connect to it instead of relying on mobile data. Apple states that “Wi‑Fi uses less battery power than mobile networks.” This reduces radio-related battery cost and avoids using your cellular allowance for the Live Activity’s network traffic.
Do not force a weak or overloaded Wi‑Fi connection. If Wi‑Fi is unreliable, the phone may repeatedly switch or retry. A stable cellular connection can be preferable to unusable Wi‑Fi. At home or work, remain on the dependable network; in a crowded stadium, compare the connection quality rather than assuming the Wi‑Fi name means better performance.
Move to a stronger signal
Poor cellular coverage makes the iPhone work harder to search for or maintain service. Apple recommends using a strong signal; coverage-related activity appears in the Battery screen and can help explain an unexpectedly high result. In a basement, train, stadium or rural area, reducing or disabling Live Activities can be more effective than leaving the feature running while the radio struggles.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSignal strength affects battery even when the data payload is small. A short score update delivered over a strong connection can cost less than repeated attempts to maintain service in a dead zone. If you know coverage will be poor for an extended period, unfollow nonessential games before you arrive.
Choose 5G Auto
If your carrier and iPhone support 5G, Apple’s 5G Auto mode can switch to LTE when 5G does not provide a noticeably better experience, saving battery compared with forcing 5G.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Mobile Service (called Cellular in some regions).
- Tap Mobile Data Options or the equivalent cellular-data option.
- Tap Voice & Data.
- Select 5G Auto.
This setting does not disable 5G. It lets iOS choose LTE when the faster network would not noticeably improve what you are doing. It is therefore a useful general setting when you want to retain mobile connectivity without forcing the highest-power radio mode.
Step 5: Use Low Power Mode for long games and travel
Low Power Mode is useful when you need the iPhone to last through a match, commute or day away from power. Apple says it reduces or disables features including Mail fetch, “Hey Siri,” Background App Refresh and some visual effects. Those changes can reduce background work beyond the Sports activity itself.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery.
- Tap Power Mode.
- Turn on Low Power Mode.
You can also enable it from Control Centre if the control is available there. Low Power Mode is a broad battery-saving measure, not a Sports-only switch, so expect other background conveniences to be reduced while it is active. Turn it off when you no longer need the extra runtime.
Use it proactively before a long game or journey rather than waiting for the battery to become critically low. It can help preserve runtime while you keep one essential Live Activity, but it does not make More Frequent Updates efficient or guarantee a particular percentage saving.
Step 6: Reduce notification wake-ups
Notifications can wake the iPhone and add interruptions on top of the Live Activity. Apple identifies notifications as an activity that can wake the device and says notification settings can be adjusted to reduce how often this happens.

A low-impact setup that still keeps scores visible
If you want live scores rather than a completely silent Sports app, use this sequence:
- Unfollow every game and team that is not essential.
- Keep the Sports app’s Live Activities permission on.
- Leave More Frequent Updates off.
- Connect to dependable Wi‑Fi when practical.
- Use 5G Auto instead of forcing 5G.
- Use Low Power Mode during long periods away from a charger.
- Trim Sports notifications so only necessary alerts wake the device.
This preserves the Live Activity for selected events while reducing avoidable follows, refresh frequency, radio work and notification interruptions. If one game is critical, follow only that game; a full team schedule is unnecessary for a single-score need.
How to measure the actual battery impact
Do not rely on a promised saving percentage. Apple’s Battery screen can show whether Sports is a meaningful contributor on your particular iPhone and day.
- Open Settings > Battery.
- Tap View All Battery Usage.
- Select the day you want to inspect.
- Find the Sports app in the list and open its entry.
- Review the app’s daily usage and activity categories, including background activity, cellular coverage and notifications when they are shown.
Apple’s User Guide explains that these categories show where battery use occurred and that tapping an app reveals its daily usage and activity. Compare a normal day with Live Activities enabled against a similar day after changing one setting. Keep the game length, network location and other major usage as similar as possible.
Change one variable at a time: for example, first disable More Frequent Updates, then compare another similar game day; next remove unnecessary follows. If you change every setting at once, you will save battery but will not know which change mattered.
Use more than one comparison when possible. A single day can be distorted by screen time, travel or poor coverage. Record the game duration, whether you used Wi‑Fi or cellular, the number of followed activities and whether Low Power Mode was on. The goal is a practical comparison for your phone, not a universal benchmark.

There is no authoritative universal megabytes-per-game figure for Apple Sports Live Activities. The amount depends on how often the app refreshes, how long the activity remains active, whether the phone uses Wi‑Fi or cellular service and what other apps are doing.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

To limit cellular exposure, keep the number of followed activities small, leave More Frequent Updates off and use Wi‑Fi where it is stable. If your iOS version exposes per-app cellular controls under Settings > Mobile Service (or Cellular), review the Sports app’s cellular-data usage and disable cellular access for the app if you are comfortable checking scores only over Wi‑Fi. The exact labels and reporting period can vary by iOS release and region.
Because carrier counters and iOS counters can use different reporting periods, compare the same interval before and after a change rather than treating a single number as a guaranteed per-game cost. Resetting the iPhone’s cellular statistics at the start of a test period can make a personal comparison easier, but it does not turn the result into a fixed figure for every game or device.

Troubleshooting by symptom
Sports still appears high in Battery
- Check whether several games or teams are still followed.
- Confirm More Frequent Updates is off.
- Look for poor cellular-coverage activity in the Battery details.
- Review whether frequent notifications, rather than the Live Activity itself, are waking the phone.
- Disable Sports Live Activities temporarily and compare a similar day.
- Check whether a long period of screen-on time in the Sports app, rather than background activity, explains the total.
No Live Activity appears after you enable following
- Confirm the Sports app’s Live Activities permission is on in Settings.
- Check that the game or team is actually followed in the app.
- Verify the iPhone has network connectivity; Apple’s developer documentation describes sports updates as occurring while the device has network connectivity.
- Remember that menu names and availability can differ by iOS release.
- Check whether the event has started and whether the app has ended an older activity; a completed game will not remain active indefinitely.
You are traveling through weak coverage
Unfollow nonessential events first. If you need maximum runtime or want to avoid cellular traffic altogether, turn off Sports Live Activities and use Low Power Mode. Re-enable the feature when you return to a reliable connection.
You need one critical score but not a stream of updates
Follow only that game, keep More Frequent Updates off and reduce unrelated notifications. This preserves the selected activity without keeping an entire team list active. If even that activity is too costly during travel, turn it off and check manually at a convenient time.
What the settings can—and cannot—guarantee
Turning off Live Activities removes the Sports app’s Live Activity surface and its associated update path, but it cannot eliminate battery use from opening the app, other apps’ notifications, a poor signal or normal screen time. Low Power Mode reduces broader background work but is not a measurement of Sports-specific savings.
Likewise, Wi‑Fi, 5G Auto and a strong signal reduce radio-related cost; they do not guarantee a particular battery percentage or data total. The defensible way to quantify your result is the before-and-after comparison in Settings > Battery, using comparable days and changing one control at a time.
There is no single best configuration for every reader. Someone watching one match on a strong home Wi‑Fi network may keep Live Activities on all evening. Someone crossing a weak-coverage area with a low battery may reasonably disable them. The useful question is whether the immediacy of the score is worth the measured cost on your device.
Bottom line
Start by removing follows you no longer need. For maximum conservation, disable Sports Live Activities in Settings. For a balanced setup, keep only essential games, leave More Frequent Updates off, use Wi‑Fi and 5G Auto, limit notifications and turn on Low Power Mode when runtime is critical. Verify the result in View All Battery Usage instead of relying on a fixed battery or data estimate that Apple does not publish.

How do I stop Apple Sports Live Activities from draining my iPhone battery?
Unfollow games and teams you do not need, leave More Frequent Updates off, use Wi‑Fi or a strong signal, select 5G Auto, and use Low Power Mode during long games. For the strongest reduction, turn off the Sports app’s Live Activities permission in Settings.
What does More Frequent Updates do?
It allows an app’s Live Activity to refresh more often. That can make scores feel more immediate, but documentation of the iOS 16.2 behavior says it drains an iPhone battery faster and may increase cellular activity. Leave it off when conserving power or data.
Can I keep one score without following every team?
Yes. Follow only the specific game you need and unfollow unrelated teams or completed events. This keeps a selected Live Activity while reducing the number of activities that can be started.
Does turning off Live Activities delete the Sports app?
No. It removes the Sports app’s Live Activity surface and associated update path. You can still open the app manually and check scores.
How can I tell whether Sports is really using much battery?
Open Settings, tap Battery, choose View All Battery Usage and select a day. Inspect the Sports entry and its background activity, cellular-coverage and notification categories when shown. Compare similar days after changing one setting.
Is there a fixed amount of mobile data per game?
No authoritative universal megabytes-per-game figure is published. Usage varies with refresh frequency, activity duration, network type, signal quality and other phone activity. Use Wi‑Fi, follow fewer events and compare the same reporting interval before and after changes.
The Bottom Line
Unfollow unnecessary games first. Keep More Frequent Updates off, prefer reliable Wi‑Fi, use 5G Auto and Low Power Mode when needed, and disable Sports Live Activities entirely for maximum conservation. Check Settings > Battery > View All Battery Usage to measure your own result.
