Improve cross-ventilation or switch off evaporative cooling when the room is already humid; drain and clean stagnant water if the cooler smells musty; and check only the basic water and pump conditions your model’s manual permits if it makes unusual noise.
How to reduce humidity from an evaporative cooler
Evaporative coolers cool by turning water into vapor, so their output is moist air. Honeywell says cross-ventilation is important to let excess humidity leave the room. Open doors or windows to create an airflow path through the space, rather than trapping the cooler’s output in a closed room. Honeywell’s air cooler FAQ describes about 60% relative humidity or lower as its preferred operating range and advises against evaporative cooling when ambient humidity is high until it falls. Treat that as Honeywell’s guidance, not a universal cutoff for every cooler or climate.

- Establish cross-ventilation with open doors or windows, including a route for room air to leave.
- If the room remains humid, turn off the pump or evaporative-cooling function. Use fan-only operation only if your model supports it.
- An indoor hygrometer can show relative humidity, but it does not remove moisture.
Honeywell also states that most of its models can produce sound up to about 60 dBA at the highest fan speed and that cooling can reach about 15°F in very hot, dry conditions. Why does my air cooler smell musty?
Rule out a new-media odor
Honeywell says new honeycomb media may have an odor that decreases after several uses and dissipates over time. If the smell is persistent or musty rather than fading, check the tank water and media. Honeywell’s FAQ

Drain stale water and inspect the media
Manufacturer troubleshooting pages identify stagnant water and dirty, worn, clogged, or mildewed pads as possible odor sources. Symphony also notes that pads may smell if they were not fully wet before the cooler started. Hessaire’s maintenance guidance Symphony’s troubleshooting guide
- Switch off and unplug the cooler before cleaning.
- Drain the tank or sump, then flush and clean it as directed in the model’s manual.
- Refill with fresh water. Honeywell recommends draining and refilling at least weekly for its units; follow your own manual if it specifies another schedule. Honeywell’s FAQ
- After evaporative use, run fan-only mode to dry the media if the unit supports it. Before long-term storage, drain and dry the cooler as the manual directs. Honeywell’s FAQ
- Clean or replace media only as the manufacturer permits. Honeywell says to replace media if mold spots or suspected algae are present; part compatibility depends on the exact model. Honeywell’s FAQ
Do not assume vinegar, disinfectants, or water treatments are safe for every cooler. Honeywell’s FAQ mentions a small amount of vinegar or an appropriate bacteriostatic treatment, while Symphony warns against cleaners, treatments, or additives in its equipment because they may impair equipment life or affect warranty coverage. Why is my air cooler making noise?
First note when the sound occurs and whether it is a hum, rattle, knock, or grinding noise. Manufacturer troubleshooting lists multiple possible causes, so a sound alone does not identify a failed part.

If noise happens while evaporative cooling is on, check the water level and pump status only as described in your model’s manual. Honeywell lists a pump that is off or low or no water during cooling among possible issues. It also lists a damaged pump or calcium deposits on the blower as possible causes, for which it directs users to customer service. Honeywell’s FAQ

Stop if the sound suggests a mechanical fault
Symphony lists dry blower bearings, a wheel rubbing its housing, and a loose belt or pulley as possible causes of knocking, banging, shaking, or rattling in the cooler designs its guide covers. Those diagnoses may not apply to a different portable model. Symphony’s troubleshooting guide
