If you bought or redeemed a PS4 game with your current PlayStation Network account, sign into that account on the console and open Library > Purchased. Select the game and choose Download. A game being delisted normally means it can no longer be bought by new customers; it does not by itself prove that your existing entitlement has disappeared.

If the game is missing, locked, or refuses to install, confirm the transaction, restore licenses, and then check whether your access came from a purchase, PlayStation Plus, or another account’s primary-PS4 sharing. Those distinctions determine which fix will work.

What a PS4 delisting means for a game you already own

A delisting removes a title from the Store’s current sales catalogue. You may no longer be able to find its product page through Store search or buy it with a new account. That is different from deleting the game application from your hard drive and different again from losing the account entitlement.

PlayStation’s storage guidance says: “Don’t worry, you won’t lose access to any deleted games — you can redownload the application from your Library whenever you like.” In practical terms, deleting a locally installed copy normally removes only the installed files. Your purchase remains associated with the purchasing account and should appear in that account’s Library.

There is an important qualification. Sony’s March 2026 Terms say users are responsible for downloading or accessing a product before it is removed or a license expires, and Sony is not obligated to provide replacement copies for any reason. Consequently, a delisted listing is not a permanent guarantee of future redownload access. The reliable test is whether the title appears under the owning account’s Library and whether the purchase or redemption is present in Transaction History.

Identify the type of access you had

Before changing settings, establish why the console previously let you play the game. A purchase license, a PlayStation Plus benefit, and access shared from another account can look similar when the game is installed, but they fail in different ways.

Access type What proves it What can end access First check
Purchased or redeemed by your account The title is listed in Library > Purchased and the transaction appears in Transaction History. An account or license problem, an incorrect sign-in, or a service-side removal or expiry covered by Sony’s Terms. Sign into the original purchasing account, then inspect the Library and transaction record.
PlayStation Plus benefit The game was claimed or made available through your subscription rather than bought as a separate transaction. An inactive subscription or the title no longer qualifying as an available benefit. Check the subscription status and whether the title is still an eligible benefit.
Shared from another account Another PSN account supplied the purchase or benefit and allowed the console to use it. The supplying account is not signed in as expected or the PS4 is no longer activated as that account’s primary console. Have the supplying account verify primary-PS4 activation and its own entitlement.

If you are unsure, start with the account that originally paid for or redeemed the game. Transaction History is the clearest way to distinguish a real purchase from a subscription listing or a game that was present only through sharing.

Redownload the game from the PS4 Library

Use this procedure for a digital PS4 title that you previously bought or redeemed.

  1. Sign into the purchasing PSN account. On the PS4, sign out of accounts that did not buy or redeem the game, then sign in with the account that originally received the entitlement. A different local user can have the same name or use the same console, but only the account holding the license can normally initiate the download.
  2. Open your purchased games. From the PS4 home screen, go to Library > Purchased. Scroll or search for the delisted title. The Store no longer selling the game does not prevent an existing item from being listed here.
  3. Start the download. Select the game’s tile and choose Download. Wait for the download notification and monitor the progress from the PS4 notifications area. If the button is replaced by a padlock, an error, or no entry at all, stop retrying and follow the account and license checks below.
  4. Install required updates. Allow the PS4 to apply any available game or system update after the base application is installed. A delisting concerns sales availability; it does not by itself describe the current patch state or whether online services for the game still operate.
  5. Redownload add-ons from the game page. Open the main game’s page in your Library and use its add-on list to locate previously purchased downloadable content. Download the base game first if the add-on list is unavailable, then install each owned add-on shown for that account.
  6. Launch with the correct account conditions. Start the game while signed into the account that owns the purchase, or while the sharing and primary-console arrangement that supplied access is active. A successful installation does not remove those license checks.

Prove the purchase or redemption in Transaction History

If the title is absent from Library > Purchased, verify the account before assuming the delisting removed it. On the PS4, open Settings > Account Management > Account Information > Wallet > Transaction History. Set the relevant date range and look for the game purchase, redemption, or other entitlement event.

  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop

What the transaction result tells you

  • The game is listed: You have evidence that this account received the entitlement. Return to the Library, then restore licenses if the item is still missing or locked.
  • Only another account has a record: Sign into that account to download the game, or restore the sharing arrangement with that account’s PS4 activation.
  • There is a PlayStation Plus record rather than a purchase: Treat the title as a subscription benefit. Check whether the subscription is active and whether the game remains an available benefit.
  • No relevant record appears: Check other PSN accounts used on the console, hidden games, and the possibility that the game was supplied by sharing. If no account shows a purchase, redemption, or qualifying benefit, the Library cannot establish ownership from the information currently available.

Keep the transaction date and any order or reference information available if you need to contact PlayStation Support. It is more useful than a screenshot of a missing Store listing because it identifies the account and entitlement event.

Restore licenses when the game is missing or locked

Restoring licenses is the official PS4 remedy for many cases in which a purchased game is not recognized or displays a padlock. It does not delete saved data.

  1. Sign into the PSN account that owns the game.
  2. Open Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses.
  3. Select Restore and wait for the operation to complete.
  4. Return to Library > Purchased and check the title again.
  5. Try the download or launch once more.

Restoring licenses cannot create a purchase record, turn a PlayStation Plus benefit into a permanent purchase, or bypass a license that has expired or been removed. Its purpose is to make the console recheck entitlements that should already belong to the signed-in account.

Why a purchased game may be missing from the Library

You are using the wrong PSN account

This is the most common explanation when a game was bought by a family member, an old email address, or a second account. The PS4’s local user profile does not prove which PSN account paid for the game. Sign out, use the original purchasing credentials, and check Transaction History there.

The game is hidden

A hidden purchase can be absent from the ordinary view even though the account still owns it. Inspect the Library’s hidden-game controls and make the title visible before trying the download again. If you cannot find the setting, use the account’s Library management options rather than searching the Store, because delisted products may not appear in Store results.

The game was a PlayStation Plus benefit

A subscription game is not the same as a separately purchased game. Access generally requires an active PlayStation Plus subscription and the title must still qualify as an available benefit. If the subscription ended or the game is no longer eligible, restoring licenses will not convert it into a standalone purchase.

The entitlement was shared

If another account supplied the game, that account should verify that the PS4 is activated as its primary console. Primary-PS4 activation is what allows other local users on that console to use many of the supplying account’s games and benefits. If the supplying account changed its primary console, signed out, or lost its own entitlement, the other user may see a padlock even though the application remains installed.

The title was removed or the license expired

A delisting alone does not establish this, but Sony’s March 2026 Terms do not promise replacement copies after removal or license expiry. If the game is absent from the owning account’s Library and there is no usable transaction or benefit record, support may be unable to restore access.

Fix a padlock or “cannot use” message

A padlock indicates that the PS4 cannot currently validate the license required to start the application. Work through these checks in order:

  1. Close the game and sign into the account that bought or redeemed it.
  2. Confirm the transaction in Settings > Account Management > Account Information > Wallet > Transaction History.
  3. Run Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses > Restore.
  4. If the game came from another account, ask that account to verify the PS4’s primary-console activation.
  5. If it came from PlayStation Plus, verify that the subscription is active and that the title still qualifies as a benefit.
  6. Restart the PS4 and test the game while the correct account and sharing conditions are in place.

Do not delete saved data as a first response. License restoration is designed to leave saves alone, and deleting the application does not erase the purchase entitlement.

When the download starts and then fails

A missing listing and a failed transfer are different problems. If the game appears in the Library but the download repeatedly stops, use this sequence:

  1. Check PlayStation service status. A service interruption can prevent entitlement checks or content delivery. Retry after the service is operating normally.
  2. Update PS4 system software. Install the latest system-software update offered by the console, then restart the download.
  3. Retry the download. Cancel a failed attempt only when necessary, return to the Library, and start it again. Note the exact error code and the point at which the failure occurs.
  4. Check local storage. Large games and updates need enough free space for the download and installation process. Remove unneeded applications or move content to a compatible external drive if the internal drive is full.
  5. Use Safe Mode only when routine retries fail. Start the PS4 in Safe Mode and choose Rebuild Database when directed by PlayStation’s troubleshooting flow. This is a system-maintenance step for database or content-recognition problems, not a way to recover a missing purchase.
  6. Contact PlayStation Support for persistent errors. Provide the error code, the exact steps that reproduce it, and the date and time of the attempt. Include the account and transaction details that establish the entitlement.

A download failure does not prove that the game was revoked. First separate service, software, storage, and database problems from an actual account or license problem.

Free space, deleted applications, and external storage

Deleting a locally installed game is a normal way to make room. It removes the application files from that PS4, not the purchase record in the account. After freeing space, return to Library > Purchased and download the title again.

PlayStation documents USB storage as a storage-management option. A PS4-compatible external drive can therefore be useful when a delisted game or its updates are too large for the internal drive. The drive increases local capacity; it does not bypass a delisting, recover a revoked or expired license, or create a missing transaction record. Confirm that the drive is compatible with PS4 before using it for installations.

Cases that look similar but need different answers

What you see Likely explanation Best next action
The game is visible in Library > Purchased and shows Download. The owning account still exposes the entitlement. Download it, then install add-ons from the game page’s add-on list.
The game is not visible, but another account used to play it. The other account may own the purchase or subscription benefit. Check that account’s Transaction History and primary-PS4 activation.
The game is visible with a padlock. The console cannot validate the current license conditions. Restore licenses, then check purchase, subscription, or sharing status.
The game is visible, but the download fails with an error. Service, system software, storage, or database trouble. Check service status, update software, retry, verify space, and use Safe Mode’s Rebuild Database if directed.
The application was deleted and no longer appears locally. The installed files were removed; the entitlement may still exist. Use the owning account’s Library rather than searching the Store.
No account shows the purchase and no eligible benefit remains. The console cannot currently establish an entitlement. Gather account and payment information and ask PlayStation Support to investigate.

What delisting cannot guarantee

It is reasonable to expect a purchased game to remain redownloadable when it is still listed in the owning account’s Library. It is not reasonable to treat every delisted title as permanently backed up by the platform. Sony’s March 2026 Terms place responsibility on users to download or access products before removal or license expiry and state that replacement copies are not guaranteed.

That limitation matters if you are deciding whether to delete a local installation. A backup copy on the PS4 or a compatible external drive protects against having to download again, but it does not change the underlying license. A stored application also cannot restore access if the account entitlement is revoked, expires, or is otherwise unavailable.

A short checklist before contacting support

  • Original purchasing or redeeming PSN account identified.
  • Game searched under Library > Purchased, including hidden-game controls.
  • Transaction History checked at Settings > Account Management > Account Information > Wallet > Transaction History.
  • PlayStation Plus status checked if the game was a subscription benefit.
  • Supplying account’s primary-PS4 activation checked if access was shared.
  • Licenses restored through Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses > Restore.
  • Service status and PS4 system software checked for download failures.
  • Available storage confirmed, with a PS4-compatible USB drive considered if necessary.
  • Error code, reproduction steps, and time of failure recorded.

The direct path is therefore: use the original account, open Library > Purchased, download the title, and restore licenses if it is missing or locked. Transaction History, subscription status, primary-console sharing, and available storage explain nearly every case in which that straightforward path does not work.
