Redeem an Xbox gift card while signed in to the Microsoft account that should receive the money. You can enter the code on Microsoft’s redemption page in a browser, or begin the console route by pressing the Xbox button, opening the guide, and selecting Store. After redemption, the value becomes Microsoft account balance that can be spent on Xbox, Microsoft Store online, or Windows. At checkout, Microsoft uses that balance first; a second payment method can cover any amount left over.
Check the account before you submit the code. Xbox states that a redeemed code cannot be transferred to another account.

What an Xbox gift card actually redeems
An Xbox gift card is a digital code that adds value to a Microsoft account. It does not permanently attach the money to a particular console. The account receiving the code is the important part, because that account carries the balance when you shop on an Xbox console, on Microsoft Store online, or on Windows.
Microsoft describes the redeemed value as usable for downloads of apps, games, movies, and TV shows through its stores. The exact products available can vary by country or region, so a card that works for one market may not provide the same purchasing options in another.
#1 Best Overall
- THE PERFECT GAMING GIFT — Buy an XBOX Gift Card for yourself or a friend and let them choose the games, add‑ons, subscriptions, and accessories they want most.
- USE FOR GAMES & CONTENT — Redeem for thousands of digital XBOX games, from backward compatible classics to the latest new releases, plus DLC and in‑game currency.
- GAME PASS READY — Apply your balance toward XBOX Game Pass Ultimate to play new titles on day one* and access a library of hundreds of high‑quality console games.
- PRE‑ORDER & PRE‑INSTALL GAMES — Use your balance to pre‑order and pre‑download upcoming titles so you’re ready to play the moment they launch.
- NO FEES OR EXPIRATION — XBOX Gift Cards never expire and have no service fees, so your balance is ready whenever you are.
Redemption and spending are separate actions. First, you submit the code and add the value to the account. Later, while signed in to that account, you select an eligible purchase. The balance is then offered as a payment source at checkout.
Confirm the Microsoft account before entering the code
The most important step happens before you type anything: identify the Microsoft account that should own the balance. Xbox’s official redemption page warns that you cannot transfer a code after it has been redeemed.
Use this account check
- On a browser, look at the Microsoft account shown as signed in before opening the redemption form.
- On the console, confirm that the profile currently using the guide and Store is the intended Microsoft account.
- If several people use the console, ask the account owner to sign in rather than redeeming while another person’s profile is active.
- If you are unsure, stop before submitting the code. Signing out and switching accounts is safer than trying to correct the ownership later.
A console can have several profiles, but redeeming does not create a shared, transferable pool. The credit is attached to the Microsoft account that completes the redemption.
Redeem an Xbox gift card on the web
The browser method is the clearest way to see which Microsoft account will receive the credit. Microsoft’s official instruction is to sign in to the correct account and enter or paste the gift-card code on its redemption page.
- Open Microsoft’s official gift-card or code redemption page in a browser.
- Sign in, or verify the account that is already signed in. Do not continue until it is the account you intend to fund.
- Enter or paste the complete code into the code field. Preserve every character and do not add spaces that are not part of the code.
- Submit the form and read the confirmation carefully. The value should be added to the Microsoft account shown on the page.
- Return to the Xbox console and use that same Microsoft account when you shop.
If the page shows a different account, do not redeem. Sign out, select the intended account, and reopen the redemption page. This precaution matters because Xbox says the redeemed code cannot be transferred.
Why the browser route is useful
- You can inspect the signed-in account before submitting the code.
- Pasting avoids confusing similar characters when the code is digital.
- You can redeem without having the Xbox console in front of you, then spend the balance later on Xbox.
Microsoft’s guidance treats Xbox gift cards, Microsoft gift cards, download codes, and tokens as using the same basic account-redemption process. The product and any regional restrictions still determine what you can buy after redemption.

Redeem directly from an Xbox console
Xbox also documents a console route. From the console, press the Xbox button to open the guide and select Store. The exact wording or placement of subsequent controls can change with the console’s software version, so follow the current prompts displayed on your screen rather than relying on an old screenshot.

- Press the Xbox button on the controller to open the guide.
- Select Store.
- Choose the current option for redeeming a code, then enter the gift-card code when the console prompts you.
- Review the account and confirmation shown by the console before completing the redemption.
The official Xbox page confirms the guide-to-Store route but does not establish a universal, permanent sequence of labels after Store. Microsoft can revise the interface, and labels may differ by console generation, language, or system update. If your screen uses a different name, choose the Store control that explicitly refers to redeeming a code or gift card.
When the console route makes sense
Use it when you are already at the console and the intended account is active. It keeps redemption and shopping in one place, but you still need to check the profile before entering the code. The console route does not remove the account-ownership rule.
Browser or console: which redemption path should you use?
| Consideration | Microsoft redemption page | Xbox console route |
|---|---|---|
| Where you start | A browser on the Microsoft redemption page | Press the Xbox button, open the guide, and select Store |
| Account check | Verify the Microsoft account shown in the browser before submission | Verify the active console profile before entering the code |
| Code entry | Type or paste the code into the web form | Enter the code in the console’s current redemption prompt |

| Where you can spend afterward | Xbox, Microsoft Store online, or Windows, subject to regional availability | Xbox, Microsoft Store online, or Windows, subject to regional availability |
| Interface certainty | Microsoft publishes the sign-in and code-entry flow | The guide-to-Store route is documented; later labels can vary with the current console interface |
Neither path is established as universally faster or more reliable. Choose based on where you are and which route lets you verify the intended account most confidently.
Use the redeemed balance to buy something on Xbox
After redemption, shop on the console while signed in to the Microsoft account that holds the balance. The balance is not a code that must be re-entered for every purchase; it is an account payment source.
- Sign in to the Microsoft account that received the gift-card value.
- Open the Xbox Store and select the game, add-on, app, movie, TV item, or other eligible product you want.
- Proceed to checkout and review the payment method shown.
- Confirm the order only after checking that the Microsoft account balance is being applied.
- If the balance does not cover the full price, provide another available payment method for the remainder.
Microsoft’s checkout guidance says the account balance is applied first. A second payment method can pay the difference when the purchase costs more than the redeemed amount. This lets you combine gift-card value with another payment source instead of requiring a second gift card for the exact total.

Example: balance covers the full price
Suppose the account has enough redeemed value for the item and any applicable charge shown at checkout. The balance is used first, so no additional payment method is needed for the remaining amount.
Example: balance covers only part of the price
If the item costs more than the account balance, checkout applies the available balance and asks for another payment method for the difference. Review the split before confirming; the second method is not a replacement for the account balance but a way to complete the unpaid portion.
Keep the account consistent
If you switch profiles between redeeming and shopping, the Store may show a different account’s balance. Return to the account that received the code before starting checkout. Redeeming on one account and expecting another account to inherit the money is not supported.

Microsoft notes that usage and available purchases can differ by country or region. A gift card’s market, the Microsoft account’s region, and the Store catalog can therefore affect what you can buy. The general redemption process does not establish a single compatibility rule for every country or every card.
Before redeeming a card purchased for someone else
- Check the card’s stated country or market.
- Confirm that the recipient’s Microsoft account is set up for the same market where the card is intended to be used.
- Do not assume that a code bought in one country can be redeemed or spent identically in another.
- If the retailer supplied market-specific terms, read them before submitting the code.
Because regional rules vary, Microsoft’s product and support pages are the appropriate place to verify a specific card and account combination. Do not redeem a questionable code merely to test it: once accepted, it cannot be transferred.
What to do if you bought the wrong code
Microsoft directs customers who purchased the wrong code to contact the retailer. The retailer is the party that sold the code and can explain its exchange, refund, or correction policy. Microsoft’s redemption process cannot move a redeemed code from one account to another.

Keep the purchase confirmation and the code details available when contacting the retailer, but avoid posting the full code publicly or sending it to anyone who does not need it to resolve the sale. If the code has already been redeemed, state that clearly; the available remedy may differ from an unused-code mistake.
Troubleshoot a code that will not redeem
Do not guess at a cause based only on an error message. First verify the account and the code, then use Microsoft’s official self-help guidance for failed redemption. Xbox also maintains an error and status-code resource for Xbox redemption errors.
Safe checks before trying again
- Confirm that you are signed in to the intended Microsoft account.
- Re-enter the code carefully, checking characters that can look alike.
- Make sure you are using the code from the correct card or purchase confirmation.
- Check whether the card or account is tied to a particular country or region.
- Read the exact error text and record any displayed code.
If the issue persists, follow Microsoft’s failed-redemption self-help flow and the Xbox error/status-code guidance rather than repeatedly submitting the same code. Those official pages are updated as account and Store systems change.
If the code was purchased incorrectly
Use the retailer route Microsoft specifies for a wrong purchase. A retailer may need to verify the transaction before offering a remedy, and its policy controls the outcome for an unused code.
If the code went to the wrong account
There is no supported transfer step. Xbox explicitly warns that a redeemed code cannot be transferred, so contact the account owner and Microsoft support only if you need help understanding the account activity; do not expect the balance to move to another profile.

Practical scenarios
You received a code by email and are away from your console
Use the web redemption page. Sign in, verify the account, enter the code, and then use the same account on Xbox when you are ready to shop. The value is account-based, so the console does not need to be present during redemption.

Your family shares one Xbox
Have the intended recipient sign in before redemption. Other profiles can continue using the console, but the gift-card value remains with the Microsoft account that redeemed it. Select that account at checkout when spending the balance.
The purchase costs more than the gift card
Proceed to checkout with the account that holds the balance. Microsoft applies the balance first and permits another payment method to cover the remainder, subject to the payment options shown for that account and region.
You are not sure which account is active
Do not enter the code yet. On the web, inspect the signed-in Microsoft account; on Xbox, check the active profile before opening the redemption prompt. Switching accounts first prevents an ownership mistake that cannot be reversed through a transfer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBuying an Xbox gift card for future use
Microsoft lists Xbox gift cards as a current digital-code product. If you are buying one for another person, treat country and account compatibility as part of the purchase decision. A card should be redeemed only by the Microsoft account intended to hold the value.
No separate application, subscription, or console accessory is required to redeem a code. You need the code, access to the Microsoft account, and either a browser or an Xbox console. Spending may require an additional payment method when the account balance is smaller than the purchase total.
Checklist before you press Redeem
- The Microsoft account shown is the account that should own the money.
- The code belongs to the intended card and purchase.
- The card and account are appropriate for the relevant country or region.
- You have checked the code characters before submitting.
- You understand that redemption is permanent for that account and cannot be transferred.
Once those checks are complete, redeem through Microsoft’s web page or the Xbox guide and Store route. Then shop on Xbox with the same Microsoft account, allowing the account balance to apply first at checkout.
