How to Redeem Nintendo eShop Gift Cards on Nintendo Switch

To redeem a Nintendo eShop gift card on Nintendo Switch, connect the console to the internet, open Nintendo eShop from the HOME Menu, choose the Nintendo Account that should receive the money, select Enter Code, type the card’s 16-character code, choose OK, then select Confirm and Add. The card’s full value is added to that selected account’s eShop balance.

What a Nintendo eShop gift card does

A Nintendo eShop gift card is a prepaid card purchased through a retailer. Its code adds money to a Nintendo Account’s Nintendo eShop balance; it does not unlock a particular game, expansion or subscription. You can then use that balance for eligible purchases in the eShop associated with the account.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The account you select before entering the code matters. Nintendo’s support instructions say the funds are applied to the selected account’s balance, so do not continue until the correct user profile and Nintendo Account are shown.

The card is therefore a payment method rather than a software license. If a friend gave you a card, you still choose the game or other eligible content separately after the funds arrive. If a retailer supplied a code for a specific game, that is a different product and follows the software download-code process.

#1 Best Overall

What you need before starting

  • An internet connection: Nintendo says the Switch must be connected to the internet to access the eShop and redeem a card.
  • A Nintendo Account: A Nintendo Account is required to access Nintendo eShop. The console user profile must be linked to the account you intend to fund.
  • The correct prepaid code: Have the 16-character code from the Nintendo eShop card ready. If the card or receipt displays other numbers, identify the prepaid eShop code rather than entering an unrelated control or reference number.
  • Access to Nintendo eShop: The instructions below use the menu wording documented for the United States, Canada and Mexico. Menu labels or account rules can differ in other regions.

Keep the card or purchase receipt until the balance appears. It can help establish which card was bought if a code is reported as already used or fails validation. For a digital card, retain the retailer’s order confirmation or delivery message instead of deleting it after you copy the code.

Before you begin, ask who should own the balance if several people share the Switch. A child’s profile, a parent’s profile and a second adult profile can each be associated with different Nintendo Accounts. Decide in advance because the eShop session determines the receiving account before the code is submitted.

Redeem the card on Nintendo Switch

  1. Connect the Switch to the internet. From the HOME Menu, verify that the console is online. Without an internet connection, Nintendo eShop cannot complete the redemption.
  2. Open Nintendo eShop. Select the orange shopping-bag icon on the HOME Menu.
  3. Choose the receiving user. When the eShop asks which user will access it, select the profile linked to the Nintendo Account that should receive the funds. Check the account carefully; this is the balance Nintendo will credit.
  4. Open Enter Code. In the left-hand eShop menu, select Enter Code.
  5. Type the 16-character card code. Enter the code printed on the Nintendo eShop card, or the code supplied with a digital card purchase. Characters that Nintendo does not use in these codes are disabled on the on-screen keyboard, which helps prevent confusing letters and numbers.
  6. Select OK. Review the characters before submitting. A single incorrect character can make a valid card appear not to work.
  7. Confirm and add the funds. Select Confirm, then select Add. Nintendo applies the card’s value to the selected account’s eShop balance.

Read the account name and the code preview on the confirmation screen before choosing Add. This is the last practical checkpoint to stop if the wrong profile is active. After the final confirmation, remain in the eShop long enough for the transaction to complete. If the balance does not update immediately, do not enter the same code repeatedly; use the checks in the troubleshooting section below.

The sequence is the same whether the code came from a physical card or a digital card purchased from a retailer. The important difference is where you find the code: a physical card normally has it on the card or its packaging, while a digital purchase generally delivers it in an order confirmation or separate message.

Check that the money went to the right account

The redemption is tied to the Nintendo Account selected when you opened Nintendo eShop. If more than one person uses the console, return to the HOME Menu and open the eShop with each profile only after confirming which account owns the balance. A card cannot be moved between accounts simply by changing the console user after redemption.

The most useful check is the balance shown for the account that redeemed the code. If another profile’s balance changed, the wrong user was selected before Enter Code; contact Nintendo Support with the purchase details rather than attempting another redemption.

Do not use a second card to “correct” an account-selection mistake. That creates another completed transaction without changing where the first card was credited. Write down the user profile and Nintendo Account involved, keep the receipt, and ask Nintendo Support what assistance is available.

Do not confuse an eShop card with a software download code

Nintendo uses several kinds of numbers on retail packaging and receipts. They are not interchangeable.

What you have What it provides Where to use it What to enter
Nintendo eShop gift card Prepaid money for the Nintendo eShop balance Nintendo eShop > Enter Code The card’s 16-character prepaid code
Software Download Code A specific game or other software entitlement Nintendo’s download-code redemption flow in the eShop The Download Code
Control Number A retailer or packaging reference associated with some software cards Not the software redemption field Do not enter it instead of the Download Code

Some retailer cards show both a Download Code and a Control Number. Nintendo’s software-code instructions identify the Download Code as the number to redeem. A Control Number is not a replacement for the 16-character prepaid code on an eShop funds card.

A quick diagnostic is to ask what the purchase promises. “Funds,” “balance” or a monetary denomination indicates an eShop card. A named game or other software title indicates a Download Code. Use the number specifically labeled for that purpose instead of trying every number printed on the receipt.

How the card balance works

Nintendo’s balance guidance says an eShop card transfers its entire balance when it is used. In practical terms, a card has either its full balance remaining or no balance after redemption; it is not a partially redeemed card that can be split between two Nintendo Accounts.

$50 Nintendo eShop Gift Card [Digital Code]
  • This item can be redeemed on eShop only. This item cannot be redeemed on the Wii Shop
  • The perfect gift for anyone who loves to play—including you. Choose from over 1,000 new, classic and indie games – delivered directly to your Nintendo Switch, Wii U or Nintendo 3DS family of systems.
  • Nintendo eShop Digital Cards are redeemable only through the Nintendo eShop on the Nintendo Switch, Wii U, and Nintendo 3DS family of systems.
  • Digital Card balances can be shared across Nintendo Switch, Wii U and Nintendo 3DS family of systems, but may only be used on a single Nintendo eShop account.

The funds belong to the account that completed the redemption. They are not attached to the physical Switch, and signing in with a different profile does not expose the first account’s balance. Decide which account should receive the money before entering the code.

Nintendo eShop can indicate that a card has already been used. If you see that result, treat the code as consumed until Nintendo Support or the retailer establishes otherwise. Keep the card, receipt and any digital-delivery record available.

Because the whole card balance transfers at redemption, check the denomination before submitting. If the value is not what you expected, stop and compare the card, receipt and order confirmation rather than assuming the eShop will take only part of it.

Troubleshooting a code that will not redeem

The code is rejected immediately

  • Confirm that you opened Enter Code from Nintendo eShop, not a field intended for another type of software code.
  • Count the characters and make sure you entered the card’s 16-character prepaid code.
  • Use the on-screen keyboard’s enabled characters. Nintendo disables characters that are not used in these codes, but it is still possible to mistype a character from a printed card.
  • Check that the Switch is online and that the selected profile can access Nintendo eShop.
  • Compare the characters with the original card or retailer message. Do not replace a missing character with an order number, receipt number or Control Number.

Enter the code slowly and inspect it before selecting OK. If the code is printed on a card, make sure the readable code is not covered by scratch-off material or obscured by damage. If the code came by email, copy only the prepaid code itself.

The eShop says the card was already used

Nintendo’s support information says the eShop can report whether a card has already been used. Do not keep submitting the same code. Check whether someone else redeemed the card, compare the account currently selected with the intended account, and retain the purchase receipt. If you did not authorize the earlier redemption, provide those details to Nintendo Support and the retailer.

You entered a Control Number

Stop and locate the actual prepaid code. On a software card that displays two numbers, use the Download Code for software redemption. A Control Number is not the code Nintendo identifies for downloading the software, and it is not the 16-character funds code used for a Nintendo eShop gift card.

The code works, but the balance appears on another profile

Review which user you selected when Nintendo eShop opened. Nintendo credits the account selected for the transaction. If the wrong account received the funds, do not redeem another card to compensate; gather the account names, card details and receipt, then ask Nintendo Support what options are available.

The card was bought in another country

Do not assume that every region-specific card works with every Nintendo Account. The documented procedure here comes from Nintendo’s Americas support content and does not establish a worldwide compatibility matrix. Check the card’s terms and the country setting for the eShop associated with your Nintendo Account before purchase or redemption. If the region is unclear, ask Nintendo Support or the retailer to confirm eligibility.

Country settings and retailer terms are especially worth checking before buying a card as a gift. A code that is valid in one market should not be presented as universally interchangeable without confirmation from Nintendo or the seller.

The card was purchased digitally but no code is visible

Look in the retailer’s order confirmation or digital-delivery message for the prepaid eShop code. Do not substitute an order number, invoice number or Control Number. If the retailer has not delivered the code, resolve that delivery issue with the retailer before attempting redemption.

There is no usable eShop access

A Nintendo Account is required to access Nintendo eShop, and the Switch must be connected to the internet. Check that the user profile is linked to the intended account and that the console can open the eShop before troubleshooting the card itself. If the eShop remains unavailable, resolve that account or connection issue first.

Switch, Switch 2 and older consoles

Nintendo states that eShop cards can still be redeemed on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. The same basic sequence—open Nintendo eShop, select the account, choose Enter Code, submit the 16-character code, then confirm and add—applies to those current consoles, although a regional support page may use slightly different wording.

The Wii U is different. Nintendo stopped accepting eShop cards for adding funds on Wii U on August 29, 2022. A card that can be redeemed on Switch or Switch 2 should not be presented as a way to add funds directly on Wii U.

If you own more than one current Nintendo console, remember that the account—not the plastic hardware—receives the funds. Open the eShop with the intended account on the console where you want to perform the transaction, and verify the account before confirming.

If you still need a card

Nintendo identifies eShop cards as prepaid cards purchased through retailers. When choosing one, verify the region, denomination and delivery method shown by the retailer. A physical card should include the prepaid redemption code; a digital card should provide that code through the retailer’s order or delivery system.

Keep the receipt or digital order record. It is useful if the code is reported as used, if the retailer has not delivered the code, or if Nintendo Support needs purchase information. Avoid treating a retailer reference or Control Number as the redemption code.

Frequently misunderstood points

Does redeeming the card download a game?

No. A Nintendo eShop gift card adds funds. You choose and purchase software separately with the account’s available balance. A software Download Code is the item that redeems a particular piece of software.

Can I redeem only part of a card?

Nintendo’s balance guidance describes the card as transferring its entire balance when used. It is not designed as a partial, multi-account redemption.

Can I choose the account after entering the code?

No. The account is selected when Nintendo eShop opens, before you reach Enter Code. Verify the profile at that point.

Are the menu labels identical everywhere?

The steps and labels above are Nintendo’s documented instructions for the United States, Canada and Mexico. Other regions may present different wording or account requirements, so use the local Nintendo Support instructions and the card’s terms when they differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the same Switch has several user profiles?

Choose the profile linked to the Nintendo Account that should receive the funds when eShop opens. The selected account controls where Nintendo applies the balance; switching profiles later does not change the completed redemption.

Can a card be redeemed on Switch 2?

Yes. Nintendo states that eShop cards can still be redeemed on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 using the eShop code-entry process.

  • Digital Card balances can be shared across Nintendo Switch, Wii U and Nintendo 3DS family of systems, but may only be used on a single Nintendo eShop account.

Can I use the card on Wii U?

No for adding funds. Nintendo stopped accepting eShop cards for that purpose on Wii U on August 29, 2022. The current redemption guidance applies to Switch and Switch 2.

What should I do if a code says it was already used?

Stop submitting it, check whether another person redeemed it, and keep the card, receipt or digital order record. Contact Nintendo Support and the retailer if the earlier redemption was not authorized.

Bottom line

Use Nintendo eShop on the Switch, select the correct Nintendo Account first, and enter the card’s 16-character prepaid code through Enter Code. Finish with Confirm and Add, then check that the full balance appears on that account. If the code fails, verify the code type, account, internet connection and regional eligibility before contacting Nintendo or the retailer.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I redeem a Nintendo eShop gift card on Switch?

Open Nintendo eShop, select the user linked to the intended Nintendo Account, choose Enter Code, enter the card’s 16-character prepaid code, select OK, then choose Confirm and Add.

Does the card add money or a game?

It adds the card’s value to the selected Nintendo Account’s eShop balance. It does not directly redeem a game or other software.

Which account receives the funds?

Nintendo applies the funds to the account selected when Nintendo eShop opens. Verify that profile before entering and confirming the code.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between a Download Code and a Control Number?

A Download Code is used to redeem software. A Control Number is a retailer or packaging reference and should not be entered instead of the software code or the 16-character prepaid eShop code.

Can I redeem part of the card now and the rest later?

Nintendo’s balance guidance says the entire card balance transfers when the card is used, so it is not a partial, multi-account redemption.

What if Nintendo says the card was already used?

Do not keep retrying it. Check whether someone else redeemed it, retain the card and receipt or digital order record, and contact Nintendo Support and the retailer if necessary.

Do eShop cards work on Nintendo Switch 2?

Nintendo states that eShop cards can still be redeemed on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I redeem an eShop card on Wii U?

No for adding funds. Nintendo stopped accepting eShop cards on Wii U for that purpose on August 29, 2022.
