The entitlement shown on your Humble purchase page determines the installation method. A game marked as a Steam key must be activated in the Steam client, after which it appears in your Steam Library and installs on Steam Deck like any other Steam title. A standalone download follows a different path: install it in Desktop Mode, add its executable as a non-Steam game, then launch the shortcut from Gaming Mode.
Both routes can work on Steam Deck, but they do not provide the same account integration, update service, controller behavior, or compatibility. The steps below keep those differences clear so you do not try to redeem a download-only entitlement as a Steam code or expect a non-Steam shortcut to behave like a Steam-owned game.

Check the Humble entitlement before doing anything
Open the Humble purchase page for the game or bundle and read the delivery label. Look for an explicit Steam key or Steam redemption option. A standalone download, DRM-free build, installer, or downloadable files are separate entitlements and are not redeemed through Steam’s product-key dialog.

- Steam key: register the code to a Steam account, then install from that account’s Library.
- Standalone build: download and install the files yourself in Desktop Mode, then add the installed executable to Steam as a non-Steam game.
Also check any platform or regional wording on the Humble page. A code can be restricted to a particular platform or region. If the page does not identify the entitlement as a Steam key, do not paste a download code or another platform’s code into Steam.

Humble games reach Steam Deck through these two routes: redeem a Steam key and install from your Steam library, or install an available standalone build and add its executable as a non-Steam game to launch it from the Deck interface. That distinction is also reflected in current Steam Deck installation guidance published October 13, 2026.
What you need before redeeming or installing
- A Steam account for the person who should own a Steam-key game. Once a key is registered, it is tied to that account.
- Access to the Humble purchase page and the key record or standalone download supplied with the purchase.
- An internet connection for account sign-in, key activation, downloads, and any game launcher or login the title requires.
- Enough Deck storage for the game and, for a standalone build, enough space for the installer and the installed files.
- Optional input hardware for Desktop Mode. The Deck’s trackpad and on-screen keyboard can be sufficient for many tasks, while a physical keyboard and mouse make file selection, typing, and installer navigation easier.
Keep a copy of the key record. Steam may ask for key information when ownership of an account is being established. Digital keys supplied outside physical packaging have limitations as account-ownership proof, so retaining the original purchase information is still useful even after activation.
Redeem a Humble Steam key in the Steam client
Steam-key activation is performed in the Steam client, not on the Steam Deck hardware settings screen and not by adding a non-Steam shortcut.
Recommended Free Tools
- Sign in to the intended Steam account. Use the account that should permanently own the game. A successfully redeemed key cannot normally be moved to another account.
- Open the product activation dialog. In the Steam client, select “+ Add a Game” at the bottom left, then choose “Activate a Product on Steam…”.
- Accept the prompts. Follow Steam’s on-screen instructions and enter the Humble key exactly as displayed. Steam’s documented path is: click “+ Add a Game” on the bottom left of the Steam client, select “Activate a Product on Steam…,” and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Confirm the result. When activation succeeds, the game is registered to that Steam account and should be available in its Library. Steam describes a registered key as proof of purchase for the game and proof of ownership for the Steam account.
If the activation dialog rejects the code, stop and read the exact error before trying repeatedly. The troubleshooting section below explains the two common code errors and what each means.
Install the redeemed game on Steam Deck
After the key is attached to your Steam account, installation uses the normal Steam workflow. You do not need to redeem the key again on the Deck.
Rank #2
- Start the Deck and sign in to the same Steam account used for activation.
- Open Library in Gaming Mode.
- Select the newly added game. If it is not immediately visible, use the Library search or check that the client has finished synchronizing your account.
- Choose Install, select the desired storage location when Steam asks, and wait for the download to complete.
- Launch the game from its Library page. Steam handles the title’s normal installation files and Steam updates.
Steam ownership and Deck installation are separate events: the key becomes part of the account during activation, while the Deck downloads the game afterward. If you own several devices, the same Steam account can expose the title in its Library on each supported device, subject to the game’s own platform and compatibility requirements.
Install a standalone Humble build as a non-Steam game
A standalone build does not become a Steam-owned title. You install its files and create a shortcut that Steam can display and launch.
Switch to Desktop Mode
- Open the Steam menu on the Deck.
- Choose Power, then Switch to Desktop.
- Wait for the Linux desktop to load. You can use the trackpad and on-screen keyboard, or connect a physical keyboard and mouse if you prefer.
Download and install the supplied build
- Open the browser or the download location where the Humble files are available.
- Download the installer or game archive supplied for the title.
- Run the installer or unpack the archive according to the publisher’s instructions. Choose a location you can find again; a folder in your home directory is easier to select later than a temporary download location.
- Complete any first-run setup, such as selecting an install directory, accepting a license, or signing in to a publisher launcher. A standalone title may still require its own account or launcher.
- Locate the installed game’s executable. The shortcut must point to the actual launch file, not merely the installer or a compressed archive.
Add the executable to Steam
- Open the Steam desktop client while still in Desktop Mode.
- Click “Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library.”
- Select the installed game’s executable from the list, or use the browse option to find it manually.
- Confirm the selection and add it to the Library.
Steam’s own description is precise: this action adds a shortcut to the game in the Steam client. It does not register the purchase as a Steam product, and it does not create Steam ownership proof.
Return to Gaming Mode
- Use the desktop’s application menu or Steam’s power controls to return to Gaming Mode.
- Open the Library’s non-Steam section and select the shortcut you created.
- Press Play. If the game needs a launcher or login, complete that process when it appears.
Steam Deck supports non-Steam games through Proton, but Proton is a compatibility layer rather than a guarantee that every Windows build will run correctly. A shortcut can launch a title from the Deck interface while the game still has title-specific requirements.
Steam-key and standalone routes compared
| Decision point | Steam key | Standalone download |
|---|---|---|
| Where the entitlement is registered | To the selected Steam account through “Activate a Product on Steam…” | Not registered as a Steam product; the purchase remains a standalone entitlement |
| How it appears on Deck | As a normal game in the Steam Library | As a shortcut in the non-Steam section |
| Installation location and mode | Installed with Steam’s normal Library workflow | Installed manually in Desktop Mode, then added to Steam |
| Updates | Delivered through Steam’s normal update system | Handled by the game’s installer, launcher, publisher, or a manual download process |
| Account integration | Steam records ownership on the activating account | The shortcut does not provide Steam ownership proof |
| Controller and Proton behavior | Uses the Steam title’s configuration, with compatibility still dependent on the game | Uses the shortcut’s configuration and may require Proton or other per-title adjustments |
| Launcher and login requirements | May still require a separate launcher or login if the game uses one | May require the publisher’s launcher, account, or an installer login |
| Platform or region limits | The key must be valid for Steam and any stated region restrictions | The supplied build and its license determine supported platforms and regions |
Choose the route that matches the entitlement rather than the route that looks more convenient. A Steam key is normally the simpler option for Library management and updates; a standalone build is the correct option when no Steam key was supplied.

How Proton, launchers, and anti-cheat affect playability
Valve states that non-Steam games can run through Proton on Steam Deck. That support covers the technical path for many Windows games, but it does not mean every title will launch, accept input, or remain playable after an update.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Before treating a successful installation as a guarantee, account for these variables:
- Game-specific Proton behavior: One title may launch immediately while another needs a different Proton version or a launch option.
- External launchers: A launcher can add another sign-in screen, download step, or overlay that behaves differently from the game itself.
- Online login: A publisher account, license check, or network connection may be required each time the game starts.
- Anti-cheat: Multiplayer games can depend on anti-cheat components that have their own Linux or Proton support requirements. If the required component is not supported, installation alone will not make online play work.
- Input and menus: A game designed for keyboard and mouse may need a custom Steam Input layout or a physical keyboard for setup and text entry.
Test the first launch with the Deck connected to the internet and keep any launcher credentials available. If the title opens but a feature such as online multiplayer does not, treat that as a compatibility or service limitation rather than a key-redemption problem.
Do you need a keyboard and mouse?
No. A physical keyboard and mouse are optional for both workflows. The Deck includes a trackpad and an on-screen keyboard that Valve documents as usable for many Desktop Mode tasks.
External input is nevertheless useful when you need to:

You can redeem a Steam key with the Steam client and the Deck’s built-in controls. For a standalone build, the same controls can handle browser downloads, file selection, and the Steam shortcut dialog, although a USB or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse can reduce friction.

“Invalid product code” or a similar rejection
First return to the Humble purchase page and confirm that the entitlement is specifically a Steam key. Steam does not accept keys intended for another platform as Steam registrations. Check for transcription mistakes, hidden spaces, or characters that look alike, then try the code once more in the activation dialog.
If the entitlement is for another platform or is download-only, use the standalone installation route instead of continuing to submit it as a Steam key. If the page clearly promises a Steam key and the code still fails, retain the purchase record and contact the relevant seller or platform support with the exact error.
“Duplicate product code”
A duplicate code is already tied to a Steam account and cannot be registered again. Sign in to the Steam accounts you control and check each Library. If the game is present, install it from that account rather than attempting another activation. If you did not redeem it, keep the Humble receipt and key record while seeking support; do not publish the code or share it with another person.
The game is missing after successful activation
Verify that the Deck is signed in to the same Steam account used in the client during activation. Search the Library by title and check the non-Steam section only if you intentionally created a shortcut; a redeemed Steam key should appear as a regular Library title, not merely as a non-Steam entry. Restarting the Steam client can force an account refresh.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
The standalone shortcut does nothing
Return to Desktop Mode and confirm that the shortcut points to the installed executable rather than the original installer, a deleted download, or an archive. Check whether the game needs a launcher or a working directory. If the title is a Windows build, try the Proton compatibility options available for that shortcut, understanding that the result remains game-specific.
The game starts but cannot connect or accept input
Separate the installation issue from the service issue. Confirm the required publisher login, network connection, and launcher updates first. Then review the shortcut’s controller layout and test the Deck controls in the game’s menus. Anti-cheat or launcher requirements can prevent online play even when the main executable opens.
Updates, ownership, and what a non-Steam shortcut cannot do
A non-Steam shortcut is only a launch entry. Valve states that it will not let Steam download updates for the game or use the game as proof of ownership for the Steam account.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePlan updates for a standalone build through the game’s own installer, launcher, or publisher process. If the publisher supplies a patch, download and apply it in Desktop Mode or through the launcher the game uses. Steam can still provide the interface shortcut and, where Proton is involved, the compatibility environment, but it does not take over the title’s licensing or update channel.
By contrast, a game activated with a Steam key is part of the Steam account’s Library. Steam handles its normal downloads and updates, subject to the title’s own release schedule, platform support, and any separate launcher it requires.
A practical decision checklist
- Read the Humble purchase page and identify whether the entitlement says Steam key or standalone download.
- If it is a Steam key, sign in to the correct Steam account and use + Add a Game → Activate a Product on Steam….
- After successful activation, open the Deck Library and install the title normally.
- If it is standalone, switch to Desktop Mode, install the supplied build, and locate its executable.
- In the Steam desktop client, choose Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library, select the executable, and return to Gaming Mode.
- Before troubleshooting, identify whether the failure is a code error, missing executable, launcher login, controller configuration, Proton compatibility, or anti-cheat limitation.
- Keep the original key or purchase record, and use the game’s own publisher process for updates when it is a non-Steam installation.
The key question is always the entitlement label. Steam activation gives you a Steam Library title and Steam account ownership; a standalone build gives you files and a Steam shortcut. Steam Deck can present either from its interface, but the two routes remain different in licensing, updates, and compatibility.
