For a new eligible consumer key, open office.com/setup or Microsoft365.com/setup, sign in with the personal Microsoft account that should own the license, enter the unused key when Microsoft asks for it, and finish the prompts. Redemption links the license to that account. You then install or reinstall Office from that account’s Services & subscriptions page; you do not enter the same key again.
If Microsoft says the key has already been used, redemption normally succeeded earlier. Sign in with the account used during redemption and install from Services & subscriptions. Business, work or school, volume-license, and some Workplace Discount Program products follow different procedures.

First identify the product, account and key state
The correct path depends on three things: which Office license you bought, which account should own it, and whether the key is unused. A consumer one-time purchase and a Microsoft 365 home subscription generally use the consumer setup pages. An organization-issued license usually depends on an administrator assigning the license to your work or school account.
| What you have | Account normally used | Initial action |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 for home | Your personal Microsoft account | Redeem a new key at Microsoft’s consumer setup page, or use the account already associated with the subscription when renewing. |
| Office 2024, Office 2021, Office 2019 or Office 2016 consumer key | Your personal Microsoft account | Redeem the unused key once, then install from the account. |
| Work or school Microsoft 365 license | Your organizational account | Sign in through the organization’s Microsoft 365 route; an administrator may need to assign the license. |
| Business or volume license | Your organization’s account or licensing system | Follow the administrator or IT instructions rather than assuming the consumer key process applies. |
| Workplace Discount Program purchase | The account specified by the program | Use the program’s instructions; some qualifying Office Professional Plus, Visio Professional or Project Professional purchases provide an in-app key-entry route. |
Microsoft’s consumer redemption instructions cover Office 2024, Office 2021, Office 2019, Office 2016 and Microsoft 365 for home. Microsoft also notes that support has ended for Office 2021, Office 2019 and Office 2016, so check the current lifecycle and security situation before relying on an older edition.

Choose the account before entering anything
The account you use at redemption becomes the practical owner of the license for later installation and reinstallation. Use the personal Microsoft account you intend to keep using, not a temporary account. If you are renewing Microsoft 365, Microsoft directs you to use the account already associated with the subscription.
Save the account email and, if appropriate, the order or package record in a secure place. A key is a one-time claim to a license; the account is what you use afterward.
Check whether the key is unused
A sealed card or purchase email does not by itself prove that a key is still available. If you have already tried to redeem it, first check the account’s Services & subscriptions page. An “already used” message usually means the key has already been attached to an account, not that you should type it again.

What a product key purchase actually gives you
A redeemable key is a way to claim the license associated with a qualifying Office or Microsoft 365 purchase. It is not a permanent activation password that must be entered every time Word, Excel or another app starts. Once redemption succeeds, Microsoft associates the license with the account used in that session.
The package may be physical or digital. A boxed purchase can contain a card with the key, while a digital purchase may show it in an order email or account. Keep the proof of purchase, but protect the full key itself. Do not post it in a public forum, send it to an unsolicited helper or include it in a screenshot.
If you are deciding whether to buy a key, first establish whether you already own Office or Microsoft 365. A new key is relevant only when you need a qualifying license. If you do purchase one, check the exact edition, whether it supports Windows, Mac or both, and the intended country or region. Listings and availability change, so verify the current Microsoft or authorized-retailer details rather than assuming every “Office key” is interchangeable.
Prepare before redemption
- Have the key, purchase receipt or package available so you can confirm the edition and seller.
- Decide which personal Microsoft account should own the license. If you use several accounts, write down the exact email before signing in.
- Confirm whether the product is Microsoft 365 or a non-subscription Office edition.
- Check the intended country or region. Regional eligibility can prevent a valid-looking key from redeeming elsewhere.
- Use a current browser and the official Microsoft domains only. Close unrelated sign-in sessions if the browser keeps selecting the wrong account.
- For a work, school, business, volume or Workplace Discount Program license, locate the organization or program instructions instead of starting with the consumer route.

Identify whether the key is for Microsoft 365 or a non-subscription Office edition, and confirm that the product is intended for your country or region. Keep the package or purchase email available in case the key format or edition needs checking.
- Open Microsoft’s official setup page. Go directly to office.com/setup. Microsoft also lists Microsoft365.com/setup for key entry and directs consumer key holders to microsoft365.com/setup in its current installation guidance. Use an official Microsoft domain; do not type a product key into a reseller’s or unrelated third-party page.
- Sign in with the intended personal account. Select the sign-in option and use the Microsoft account that should own the license. If you do not have one, create a personal Microsoft account during the process. Do not substitute a work or school account unless the license instructions specifically require it.
- Enter the product key if Microsoft asks. Type the 25-character key as shown, omitting hyphens if the page requests that format. Check each character carefully before submitting. If there is no key field, Microsoft says the key may have been entered automatically; do not invent a second redemption attempt.
- Complete every on-screen prompt. Confirm the product and account details, accept the applicable terms and finish the redemption flow. The important result is that Microsoft links the license to the signed-in account.
- Record the account used. Note the exact account email and, if you manage several Microsoft accounts, label which one owns this Office license. You will need that account for installation, activation and future reinstalls.
What successful redemption changes
Before redemption, the key is an unclaimed license token. After redemption, the license appears in the Microsoft account’s Services & subscriptions area. The key itself is not a reusable password and is not normally needed for every installation.
Install Office after redemption
Once the license is attached to your account, installation starts from the account rather than from another key-entry attempt.
- Open your Microsoft account. Sign in with the same account used during redemption.
- Go to Services & subscriptions. Open the account area and locate the Office or Microsoft 365 product associated with the purchase.
- Select the install option. Choose the product’s install control and follow the download and setup screens for your operating system. The exact screens vary by product and platform, so review Microsoft’s current PC or Mac instructions and check the product’s system requirements before starting.
- Let setup finish. Keep the device connected while the installer downloads and configures the apps. Avoid launching multiple installers for the same product at once.
- Activate from an Office app. Open Word, Excel or another installed Office app. If it asks you to activate, sign in with the account associated with the purchase. A redeemed key should not be entered again merely because an app is requesting activation.
Reinstalling on the same or another device
Reinstallation follows the same account route: sign in to the owning account, open Services & subscriptions, select the listed product and use its install option. Whether another device is allowed depends on the edition’s license terms and current Microsoft account controls; the account page is the authoritative place to see available installation choices.

Windows and Mac considerations
Microsoft presents different downloads and setup screens for Windows and macOS. Select the installer offered for your platform and verify compatibility before downloading. Do not assume that a Windows-only edition can be installed on a Mac, or that every subscription feature is identical across platforms.

When Microsoft says the key has already been used
Microsoft describes consumer keys as one-time redemption codes. The “This product key has already been used” message generally indicates that redemption succeeded earlier. Stop entering the code and find the account to which it was attached.
- Sign out of unrelated Microsoft accounts in the browser if necessary.
- Sign in to the account you believe was used for the original redemption.
- Open Services & subscriptions and look for the Office or Microsoft 365 product.
- Use the product’s install option. If an installed app asks for activation, sign in with that same account.
If the product is not listed, check other personal Microsoft accounts you control, the original purchase email and any record you made during redemption. Do not buy another key simply to solve an account-identification problem.
If the key was redeemed under the wrong personal account
Redemption attaches the license to the account that was signed in at the time. Signing out later does not normally move it to another account. Return to the original account for installation and activation. If you cannot access that account, use Microsoft’s account-recovery process or the support route associated with the purchase; entering the same key on a second account will not create another entitlement.
Troubleshoot a key that will not redeem
The key is rejected immediately
Check that you entered every character correctly and that the key belongs to the edition you are trying to redeem. Confirm that it is intended for your country or region and has not already been redeemed. A key for a different product, region or account context may fail even when its characters are accurate.

Region or language error
A key purchased for a different country or region may not be redeemable where you currently live. Follow Microsoft’s region-specific troubleshooting guidance and verify that the product’s intended region matches your account and location. Do not assume that changing the display language or using a different browser will bypass a regional eligibility rule.
The key-entry box is missing
Microsoft says the key may have been entered automatically. Sign in to the intended account and inspect Services & subscriptions. If the Office product appears there, proceed with installation instead of looking for another key field.
A key from a third-party seller does not work
Microsoft warns that separately sold keys can be stolen, abused, counterfeit or otherwise unauthorized. If a key bought from a third-party seller fails, Microsoft says to contact that seller and request a refund. Keep the receipt, listing and messages, but do not publish the key or send it to strangers who promise activation.
Office installs but will not activate
Open an Office app and sign in with the account associated with the purchase. If you have more than one Microsoft account in the browser or app, sign out of the unrelated one and retry with the owning account. Activation problems caused by a missing or mismatched license cannot be fixed by repeatedly entering a key that has already been redeemed.
The product is listed but the installer is unavailable
Confirm that you are viewing the same account used at redemption and that you selected the correct product entry. Work or school accounts can show a product without offering a desktop install when the organization has not assigned the required license. In that situation, contact the Microsoft 365 administrator rather than trying to redeem a consumer key.

Different instructions for work, school and special licenses
| License situation | What to do | Why the consumer steps may fail |
|---|---|---|
| Work or school subscription | Sign in with the organizational account and use the installation options provided by the organization. | The organization must assign the relevant license; a personal account may show no product. |
| Business subscription | Follow the business tenant’s Microsoft 365 installation instructions or ask the administrator. | Licenses and deployment controls are managed through the organization. |
| Volume license | Contact IT or the volume-licensing administrator for the approved deployment method. | Volume licensing is not redeemed like a retail consumer key. |
| Workplace Discount Program | Use the program’s specified account and, for qualifying Office Professional Plus, Visio Professional or Project Professional purchases, follow Microsoft’s in-app key-entry instructions. | These products can use a special purchase and activation route. |
If a work or school account has no desktop install option, the organization may not have assigned the required license. Contact the Microsoft 365 administrator rather than trying to attach an organizational license to a personal account.
Security and account records that prevent future problems
- Use only Microsoft’s official setup domains when entering a key.
- Never post a full key in a forum, support ticket visible to others or screenshot.
- Keep the purchase receipt, package information and the Microsoft account email together in a secure record.
- Use a strong, unique password and the account’s available security protections, because account access controls the license after redemption.
- When selling or transferring a device, remove your account and Office data according to Microsoft’s account and installation controls; handing over a device does not automatically transfer the license.
A quick decision path
- Unused consumer key: open the official setup page, sign in to the intended personal account, enter the key if prompted and finish redemption.
- Key already used: stop entering it; locate the owning account and install from Services & subscriptions.
- No key field: check whether Microsoft entered the key automatically and whether the product is already listed in the account.
- Region or seller error: verify regional eligibility and contact the seller for a refund when a separately sold key is unauthorized or invalid.
- Work, school, business, volume or Workplace Discount Program license: follow the organization or program-specific route and involve the administrator when the license is missing.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I enter my Office product key?
For an eligible new consumer purchase, enter it at Microsoft’s official office.com/setup or Microsoft365.com/setup page after signing in to the personal account that should own the license. If Microsoft does not show a key field, the key may already have been entered automatically.
Do I need the key to reinstall Office?
No. After one-time redemption, sign in to the owning Microsoft account and install from Services & subscriptions. If an app asks for activation, sign in with that same account instead of entering the redeemed code again.
Can I redeem the same key on two accounts?
No. Consumer redemption is intended to be one time. An “already used” message normally means the license is attached to the first account that redeemed it.
What if I cannot remember which account I used?
Check each personal Microsoft account you control, the product list under Services & subscriptions, your original order email and any secure account record. Do not keep submitting the key while you search.
Can I use a personal account for a work or school license?
Usually not. Organizational licenses are assigned to work or school accounts and may require administrator action. Follow your organization’s Microsoft 365 instructions.
Why does a valid-looking key show a region error?
The key may have been sold for a different country or region. Verify the product’s intended region, your account and your location, then follow Microsoft’s regional troubleshooting guidance. A language change is not a guaranteed solution.

No. First locate the Microsoft account that owns the redeemed license. Buying a second key does not repair an account mismatch and can create another unused or unauthorized purchase.
What should I do about a key bought from an online marketplace?
If it fails, retain the receipt and listing, contact the seller and request a refund. Microsoft warns that separately sold keys can be stolen, abused, counterfeit or otherwise unauthorized.
Does the same installation process apply to Office 2016, 2019 and 2021?
The consumer redemption route covers those editions, but Microsoft notes that support has ended for Office 2016, Office 2019 and Office 2021. Check the current lifecycle and security implications before installing an older product.

Why is my Workplace Discount Program purchase different?
Some qualifying Office Professional Plus, Visio Professional and Project Professional purchases use a special program route, including an in-app key-entry path. Follow the instructions supplied for that program rather than the standard consumer flow.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat to remember
Think of the process as two separate events. Redeem once claims an eligible key and attaches the license to a Microsoft account. Install later means signing in to that account and using Services & subscriptions. This distinction explains why an already-used key should not be re-entered and why the correct account matters more than keeping the code available for every reinstall.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I enter my Office product key?
Use Microsoft’s official office.com/setup or Microsoft365.com/setup page, sign in with the intended personal account, and enter an unused consumer key when prompted.
Do I need the key to reinstall Office?
No. After redemption, install from the owning account’s Services & subscriptions page and activate by signing in with that account.
What does “product key already used” mean?
It normally means the key was redeemed previously. Find the Microsoft account used at redemption and install from Services & subscriptions.

Check the edition, characters, redemption status and country or region. For a failed third-party purchase, contact the seller and request a refund.
Can work or school users follow the consumer steps?
Usually not. Organizational licenses may require assignment by a Microsoft 365 administrator and use of a work or school account.
Why is there no key-entry box?
Microsoft says the key may have been entered automatically. Check Services & subscriptions for the product before trying anything else.
Should I buy another key after an activation error?
Not immediately. Verify the owning account first; entering or buying another key will not fix a license attached to a different account.
The Bottom Line
Redeem an unused consumer key once at Microsoft’s official setup page, using the account you intend to keep. From then on, install, reinstall and activate through that account’s Services & subscriptions page. An already-used message, a missing key field or an activation prompt usually calls for finding the correct account—not entering the key again.
