To activate Microsoft 365 on a new HP laptop, finish Windows setup, connect to the internet, open HP Support Assistant, then start Word, Excel, Outlook or another pre-installed Office app. Sign in with the Microsoft account that should own the offer and follow the redemption screen. If HP supplied a card or email containing a product key, redeem it once at Microsoft365.com/setup or Office.com/setup instead.
HP bundles are not identical: a particular model and sales region may include no offer, a one-month Microsoft 365 Family trial, or a fixed-term subscription such as one year. The exact term and eligibility belong to the laptop’s model, market and purchase channel, so do not assume that a new HP computer includes lifetime Office access.

What you need before activation
Have the laptop, its charger, a reliable internet connection and the Microsoft account you intend to keep using. If another person will own the subscription, use that person’s account during redemption rather than activating with a temporary account and trying to transfer it later.
- Complete the Windows first-run setup far enough to reach the desktop.
- Connect Windows to the internet; an offline setup cannot verify a digital entitlement.
- Keep the HP paperwork and any redemption email available. A printed card or email may contain a product key, but many bundles are entirely digital.
- Know which Microsoft account should receive the license. The account used for redemption controls later installation and reinstallation.
Do not buy another subscription before checking the bundled-offer screens. A missing offer can be caused by the wrong account, an uncompleted setup, a model or regional eligibility rule, or an entitlement that was already redeemed.

Activate a digital HP entitlement
1. Finish Windows setup and connect
Turn on the HP laptop and complete the Windows setup prompts. Connect to Wi-Fi or Ethernet and allow setup to finish. Registration and entitlement checks require the computer to be online. If Windows asks you to sign in with a Microsoft account, use the account that should ultimately own Microsoft 365, or be prepared to use that same account in the Office app.
2. Open HP Support Assistant
Launch HP Support Assistant from the Start menu. HP describes the utility as the first stop on supported new laptops for registration, updates and redemption guidance. Check its device-registration or offer area for a Microsoft 365 notice and follow any HP-specific prompts. Some HP models include a Microsoft 365 trial or subscription, while others do not; the application cannot create an offer that was not attached to the device.
Install any requested HP updates and restart if instructed. Updating first can make a newly delivered entitlement appear in the correct setup flow, but it does not change the subscription term advertised for the laptop.
3. Start an included Office app
Open Word, Excel, Outlook or another pre-installed Microsoft 365 app from the Start menu. On its first run, Microsoft may show choices such as starting a one-month Microsoft 365 Family trial, purchasing Microsoft 365, adding an existing subscription, or redeeming an included offer. Read the wording carefully: a trial and a fixed-term bundle are different products.
If the app opens in a reduced or viewer mode, look for Activate, Sign in or Redeem an offer in the activation panel. Do not enter a random key from an unrelated purchase when the laptop is supposed to have a digital entitlement.
4. Sign in with the owner account
When prompted, sign in with the Microsoft account that should own the subscription. Microsoft uses that sign-in to verify the license and to associate the entitlement with the account for future installation or reinstallation. The Windows account and the Microsoft account used in Office can be different, but using the same account throughout setup, redemption and Office activation avoids the most common ownership error.

After sign-in, accept the offer only after confirming its term and product name. If a one-month Family trial is displayed but your sales documents promise a longer bundle, stop and check HP Support Assistant, the laptop model and the included paperwork before accepting the wrong option.

Keep the app open while it contacts Microsoft. When activation succeeds, the account panel should show the licensed Microsoft 365 product rather than an invitation to subscribe. Close and reopen the app if the status does not refresh immediately, then check another included Office app.
6. Install the desktop apps if needed
Redemption and installation are separate steps. After the entitlement is attached to your account, use the install control on your Microsoft account page to download the desktop apps. Sign in to each app with the same account. A successful install should open without a purchase prompt and should show the account name in the app’s account or subscription area.
Redeem a printed or emailed product key
Some HP packages include a card or an email with a 25-character key. A key is redeemed once; it is not repeatedly entered each time Office is installed.
- Open Microsoft365.com/setup or Office.com/setup in a browser.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that should own the product. Create an account if necessary, but record its address and password securely.
- Enter the key exactly as printed. If the page asks for a key without hyphens, omit the hyphens; otherwise follow the field’s formatting instructions.
- Review the product and region shown on screen, then confirm redemption.
- Follow the prompts to associate the product with the account. Microsoft describes this as a one-time process that adds the new product to the account.
- Use the account’s install option to download Office, then open an app and sign in with that same account.
Never publish a product key in a support forum or send it to someone who is troubleshooting for you. Once redeemed, the key is no longer the mechanism used to reinstall Office; the associated Microsoft account is.

An “already been used” message normally means the key has already been associated with a Microsoft account. Do not keep trying different variations of the code. Go to account.microsoft.com, sign in to accounts you may have used during the original redemption, and check the products or services connected to each account. Install or manage the product from the account that owns it.

If you bought the card new and none of your accounts shows the product, retain the receipt and contact the seller or Microsoft support. A used key cannot be reset simply by reinstalling Windows.
Digital entitlement versus a key

A digital entitlement can therefore be legitimate even when the box contains no card. Conversely, finding a card does not prove that a separate digital offer also exists; activate the product that the purchase documents describe.
What kind of Microsoft 365 access is included?
“Microsoft 365 included” is not a single universal package. Microsoft’s pre-installed-offer flow can present a one-month Microsoft 365 Family trial, a purchase, an option to add an existing subscription, or redemption of an included offer. HP product bundles may advertise a fixed term such as one year. The exact duration, product family, renewal behavior and eligible country must be confirmed for your model.

Microsoft 365 subscriptions and one-time Office licenses have different rights. Read the product name shown during redemption rather than relying on the word “Office” in a sales headline.
Make sure the right account owns the license
Activation follows the Microsoft account, not merely the physical laptop. If a family member, work account and personal account are all signed in, Office can appear unlicensed even though another account owns the entitlement.
- In Word or Excel, open the account or subscription section and note the signed-in address.
- Compare it with the address used during the original HP or key redemption.
- Sign out of the incorrect account, close the app and sign in with the owner account.
- Use that account whenever you reinstall after a reset, replace the drive or move to another eligible computer.
HP support cases report that an included offer activates only on the account used for the original setup or redemption. Creating a second account will not duplicate the entitlement and can make it difficult to locate later.

Troubleshoot activation problems
“There is no Microsoft 365 offer”
Check HP Support Assistant and the Microsoft Store before purchasing anything. Then verify the exact laptop model, sales region and purchase channel against the listing or invoice. HP says inclusion is not universal, so two laptops with similar names can have different software bundles. Look through the box, paperwork and purchase email for a separate key or activation deadline.
If the model was refurbished, imported, sold through a different channel or purchased in a country different from the one shown in the offer, eligibility may differ. Ask HP support to check the entitlement tied to the device using the serial and product details.
Word or Excel keeps asking you to buy Microsoft 365
First check the account address in the app. If it differs from the account used during Windows setup or redemption, sign out and use the owner account. Confirm that the laptop is online, restart Office and install pending updates. If the account page does not list the product, the offer was likely not redeemed, was redeemed elsewhere, or was not attached to this model.
The key is rejected
Re-enter the characters carefully and follow the page’s instruction about hyphens. Make sure you are using the setup site for the product on the card, not a sign-in page inside an already installed app. If the message says the key was already used, locate the owning account at account.microsoft.com rather than trying the code again.
The app activated, but desktop installation is missing
Activation proves the account owns the product; it does not always install every desktop application automatically. Open the install controls on the Microsoft account page, download the installer and complete setup. Reopen Word or Excel afterward and sign in with the same account.

The offer disappeared after a reset
A Windows reset removes local applications but does not normally erase an entitlement already associated with the Microsoft account. Sign in to the owning account and install from its product page. If the account does not show the product, gather the original HP paperwork and contact HP or Microsoft support; do not expect the same digital offer to appear merely because the device was reset.

Activation still fails after these checks
Use Microsoft’s guided support from the activation page for account and licensing errors. Contact HP support when the issue concerns whether the laptop was entitled to the bundle, and provide the model, region, purchase channel and proof of purchase. Microsoft can address account redemption; HP is the party that can verify a device-tied offer.
Verify activation and keep a recovery record
After activation, open Word and Excel and check the account or subscription panel for the licensed product name. Record the Microsoft account address, product name and expiration date in a secure password manager or other private record. Keep the invoice, card and redemption email until the term has ended and you have successfully reinstalled the apps at least once.
Do not remove the account from the device until you know which account owns the subscription. If the laptop is shared, add other users through the plan’s permitted sharing features rather than giving them the owner’s password.

What to do when the included term ends
When a trial or fixed-term subscription expires, Office may move to reduced functionality or ask you to choose a continuation. Microsoft lists starting a one-month Family trial, buying Microsoft 365, adding the product to an existing subscription, or entering a new product-key card as possible choices. Select the option that matches your needs and region.
A Microsoft 365 Personal 1-year product key card can replace or renew access when the included HP term is unavailable or has ended, provided the card is valid for your country and product. Redeem a replacement card through the same setup process and keep the resulting account association; do not assume that a new card extends a different account automatically.
