Redeem a PC game key in the storefront named by the code—such as Steam, the EA app, Ubisoft Connect PC, or the Microsoft/Xbox store—while signed in to the account that should own the game. A redemption is successful when that account accepts the code and the entitlement appears in its library. Installation and launch are useful follow-up checks, but they are not always available immediately for preorders, downloadable content, or unreleased games.
What a PC game key actually does
A game key is an alphanumeric entitlement code. It is not a universal password that every launcher can accept. The code is issued for a particular storefront, publisher account system, product, edition, and often region. A Steam key normally creates ownership on Steam; an EA code creates ownership on the intended EA Account; a Ubisoft code is tied to the Ubisoft account used during activation; and a Microsoft/Xbox code is applied to a Microsoft account.

The account is just as important as the code. Once a key is accepted, the license is generally attached to the account that redeemed it. Signing out and checking a different account can make a valid activation look missing. Decide which account should permanently own the game before entering anything.

Do not confuse redeeming a license with adding a non-Steam shortcut, importing a game you already own elsewhere, or entering a promotional discount during checkout. Those actions do not create the same platform entitlement.

Before you redeem: a five-minute checklist
- Read the code’s instructions and identify the required launcher or website.
- Sign in to the account that should own the game. If a browser and launcher are both open, check that they use the same account.
- Inspect the code carefully. Distinguish similar characters such as zero and the letter O, one and the letter I, or five and the letter S.
- Confirm the country or region, language availability, edition, and PC platform listed by the seller.
- Determine whether it is a product code or a discount code. A discount usually belongs in a checkout field, not a library-redemption screen.
- Close duplicate launcher sessions and install the current official client if the instructions require one.
- Take a screenshot or keep the purchase confirmation before submitting. Never publish the complete code in a support forum.
If the instructions name a publisher account rather than a store, follow that publisher’s route. A code bought for one launcher does not automatically transfer to another launcher.
How to redeem a Steam key
Use the Steam client
- Launch the Steam client and sign in to the intended Steam account.
- Open Games in the top menu.
- Select Activate a Product on Steam….
- Read the agreement, continue, and enter or paste the product key exactly as supplied.
- Submit the code and complete any confirmation prompts.
Use Steam’s browser registration route
Steam also provides a browser-based route for registering a CD key. Use the official Steam registration page while signed in to the same account you want to own the game, then enter the code and follow the confirmation screens. If the browser opens a different account, stop before submitting and switch accounts.
Confirm the Steam entitlement
Open the Steam library and search for the title while remaining signed in to the account used for activation. A registered retail key serves as proof of purchase and ownership for that Steam account. The title should offer the normal library actions, such as installing when the game is available.
A key that was not issued for Steam will not create Steam ownership. Adding a shortcut to a game installed from another launcher can place an icon in Steam, but it does not redeem a Steam license or move ownership between services.
How to redeem an EA product code
Redeem on the EA website
- Go to EA’s code-redemption page and sign in to the EA Account that should own the game.
- Choose the option for redeeming a PC code.
- Enter the product code and continue through the confirmation screens.
- Return to the account’s game library and look for the title.
Redeem in the EA app
- Open the EA app and sign in to the intended EA Account.
- Select My Library.
- Choose Redeem Code.
- Enter the code, submit it, and wait for the entitlement confirmation.
EA says a redeemed game appears on the EA Account. Check the account identity as well as the library listing; a successful entry on an unintended account cannot normally be treated as a transfer.

Do not put every EA code in the same field
EA product codes grant a game or other entitlement. Promotional discount codes are generally applied during checkout and do not add a game to your library. Use the location specified in the email, box, or manual that contained the code.
Some older EA titles cannot be redeemed in the EA app and may require the original disc. If the documentation calls for physical media, an app redemption attempt is the wrong path rather than proof that the code is bad.

Some games purchased through Steam still require the EA app and an EA Account when they are played. Conversely, a game bought in the EA app cannot be transferred to Steam. Treat the store where you redeemed the code as the primary ownership record and complete any account-linking prompt only after checking that it names the accounts you intend to connect.
How to redeem a Ubisoft Connect PC key
Enter the key in Ubisoft Connect PC
- Open Ubisoft Connect PC and sign in to the Ubisoft account that should own the game.
- Select your profile in the upper-left corner, or open the overlay.
- Choose Key/Code Activation.
- Enter the code in Activate Product. Some codes require you to select a product and platform before submission.
- Select Activate and wait for the success message.
Check the library and install
A successful activation appears in that Ubisoft account’s library. Open the title’s library page and start the download and installation from there. If the game is unreleased or the code represents an add-on, the entitlement may appear even though a full install is not yet offered.
Ubisoft warns that multiple failed activation attempts can temporarily block further attempts. Do not repeatedly guess at a code. Stop, inspect the characters and the product instructions, and then retry once you are confident that the platform and account are correct.

How to redeem a Microsoft or Xbox PC code
- Sign in to the Microsoft account that should receive the game entitlement.
- Open Microsoft’s Redeem code flow for Xbox download codes and tokens.
- Paste or type the code, check the displayed product and account, and confirm.
- Open the Microsoft Store or the relevant Xbox library on PC and verify that the entitlement is attached to that account.
Game codes use a different redemption path from Office or Windows product keys. Do not follow instructions intended for those products. If you bought the wrong type of code, Microsoft directs customers back to the retailer; keep the purchase evidence for that conversation.
How do I know if my game key worked?
The strongest confirmation: a library entitlement
Across the major platforms, the clearest general proof is that the account used for redemption now lists the game or other promised entitlement in its library. A success message alone can be misleading if you were signed in to an unexpected account, so verify the profile and the library entry together.
- For a base game, the library should identify the title and provide an install or play option when the release is available.
- For DLC, season passes, currency, or another add-on, inspect the base game’s details or the account’s add-on list rather than expecting a separate game tile.
- For a preorder, the entitlement can be present before the release date, while installation or launch remains unavailable.
Use installation and launch as follow-up checks
If the title is released and your system meets its requirements, start the platform’s normal install process. A completed installation and a launch to the game’s main menu provide useful additional confirmation. They are not universal tests: a preorder, unreleased title, missing required launcher, account-linking requirement, or unsupported system can prevent launch even when the key is valid.
Do not infer ownership from a desktop shortcut, a downloaded installer, or a game folder alone. Those can exist without a license on the account you are checking.
Why the game is not showing in your library
You are signed in to another account
Sign out and compare the account identifier with the one shown when you redeemed the key. On Ubisoft Connect, a title redeemed on another Ubisoft account will not appear in the current library. The same account principle applies to Steam, EA, and Microsoft redemptions.

The launcher has not refreshed
Quit the launcher completely, reopen it, and allow it to synchronize. For Ubisoft Connect PC, Ubisoft suggests emptying the client cache and restarting when an activated game is still absent. If it remains missing after the cache reset, contact Ubisoft with proof of purchase and the account details requested by support.
The code was for something other than a base game
Check the product description again. DLC, currency, a season pass, and a promotional discount may appear in a different account section or only become visible inside the base game. A discount code will not create a library tile.
The release or platform requirement has not been met
A preorder may be recorded before its release date. Some games also require a second launcher or an account link before the install button appears. Read the store listing and any linking prompt instead of redeeming the same code again.

An “already used” result means the code has previously been redeemed and cannot normally be applied a second time. EA notes that a secondhand code may have been redeemed by its original owner. If you purchased the code new, return to the retailer promptly and provide the order confirmation, receipt, and a clear description of the error. The platform or publisher may request proof of purchase when investigating a code redeemed on the wrong account.
Do not buy a replacement from an unverified seller before resolving the first transaction. A second code creates a second dispute and does not restore an entitlement that was attached to someone else’s account.
What to do when a code is expired
Check the expiry terms supplied with the code, including any date printed on a card, email, or promotion. EA advises contacting the retailer when a code was already expired at the time of sale. An expired promotional code and an expired game entitlement can have different terms, so quote the exact product and error in your support request.
What to do when a code is invalid
“Invalid” is a symptom, not one diagnosis. Before contacting support, work through these checks once:
- Confirm that the code is for the launcher where you are entering it.
- Confirm that it is a product code rather than a checkout discount.
- Compare the edition, platform, and region with the purchase listing.
- Re-enter the characters carefully, avoiding spaces added by copying and pasting.
- Check whether the seller or publisher reports a separate status such as banned, already used, or region invalid.
Use the support route named by the platform or retailer after those checks. Ubisoft distinguishes invalid, banned, already-used, and region-invalid errors, while EA specifically advises confirming that the code is being redeemed in the right place. Avoid repeated guesses because failed attempts can trigger a temporary activation block.

A code can be genuine and still unusable in your country. Region restrictions may prevent activation, limit language options, or require the account’s store region to match the purchase. Buying in your own country or region reduces that risk, but the code’s individual terms control.
Account linking is another separate issue. A Ubisoft game bought through the EA app may require a Ubisoft account link. An EA game bought through Steam may still open the EA app. Linking does not turn a Steam purchase into an EA-app purchase or move an EA-app license to Steam; it simply connects the accounts needed to run the product.

How to buy keys with fewer problems
For Ubisoft products, Ubisoft recommends buying directly from Ubisoft or from companies with a digital distribution agreement. It warns that a key from a retailer without that agreement may be invalid, illegally obtained, or later revoked. This is publisher-specific guidance, not a universal approval list for every game.
Before paying, compare the listing on five points:
- Storefront: identify exactly where the key will be redeemed.
- Region and language: verify that activation and the desired language are supported in your country.
- Account and launcher requirements: note whether a second publisher client or account link is required.
- Item type: distinguish the base game from DLC, currency, a season pass, a preorder, or a discount.
- Seller remedy: read the rules for faulty, expired, used, revoked, or wrong-region codes before checkout.
Keep the invoice, order number, seller name, code delivery email, and screenshots of the listing. If a dispute arises, do not alter the code or share it publicly; support staff can work from the order evidence and the exact error message.

A quick recovery path
- Stop entering the code if the platform warns about too many failed attempts.
- Identify the storefront, product type, region, and account shown in the redemption screen.
- Check the same account’s library and add-on areas, then restart the launcher if its display is stale.
- Record the exact error, date, platform, and account identifier without disclosing the full key.
- Contact the seller for used, expired, wrong-region, or unauthorized-code problems, and contact the platform for account, activation, or library issues.
This sequence separates an account or client-display problem from a code that was never valid for your purchase. It also preserves the evidence a retailer or platform needs to investigate.
